Sorry, but the 4th of July took precedence over thoroughly following the MiLB games. This is a shortened version.
Sugar Land Space Cowboys (Houston) 7 – OKC Comets 5 – 5 ½ innings
Game was delayed in the bottom of the 6th due to inclement weather and eventually called. The game went long enough for a game.
RHSP Ryder Ryan took the mound for OKC and delivered a HR to the first batter he faced. Two singles and a 3-run HR gave the Space Cowboys a 4-0 lead after 4 batters faced.
In the bottom of the 2nd, 3B Ryan Fitzgerald singled and moved to 3rd when LF Ryan Ward reached on an error and moved to 2nd. 1B James Tibbs III hit a SF for Fitzgerald to score and Ward to 3rd. Ward scored on a ground out.
Sugar Land scored a solo run in the 3rd off Ryder Ryan on a BB, single with runner to 3rd, and a SF.
RHRP Jerming Rosario relieved Ryan in the 4th. Rosario walked the first batter he faced and hit the next two. A WP brought home a run, with the other base runners moving up a base. The 7th run came home on a ground ball.
In the 5th, SS Noah Miller hit his 9th HR, and back to back doubles by RF Zach Ehrhard (18) and CF Alek Thomas (4).
RHRP Jose Rodriguez retired the side in the 5th and got the first out in the 6th. RHRP Chayce McDermott got the final two outs in the 6th. Then the rains came, and the umpires eventually called the game.
Ryan Fitzgerald was the only OKC batter with 2 hits. Noah Miller’s HR and Zach Ehrhard’s and Alek Thomas’ doubles were the only XBH.
Tulsa Drillers 10 – Wichita Wind Surge (Minnesota) 2
CF Kendall George returned from his rehab assignment to start for Tulsa. 1B Joe Vetrano went on the IL to make room for George.
CF Mike Sirota did not play in this one, so the streak stands at 67. But 3B Jake Gelof did play and he walked to reach base safely in his 42nd consecutive game.
LHRP Myles Caba was the opener for RHSP Patrick Copen. Caba pitched a scoreless 1st, but when he walked the first two batters in the 2nd, Copen was summoned in. Copen struck out the 1st batter, but the two runners pulled off a double steal, and the following batter hit a SF for a 1-0 lead. After a BB, Copen got the final out of the inning.
Tulsa took the lead in the top of the 4th when RF Josue De Paula doubled (26), and DH Zyhir Hope hit a one out 2-run HR (16).
In the 5th, 2B Taylor Young singled and stole 2nd. Young scored when SS Sean McLain hit an RBI single.
The Drillers scored another in the 6th when LF Kole Myers hit a one out single and continued to second on a fielding error. Myers scored on McLain’s 6th double.
Copen pitched 3.0 additional innings without allowing a hit. He retired 9 of the last 10 batters he faced, only allowing a BB. This was a welcome positive game from Copen.
RHRP Lucas Wepf relieved Copen in the 6th and pitched a scoreless inning.
In the 7th, JDP singled. With one out, Hope drew a BB, and with 2 outs, Myers singled to load the bases. C Frank Rodriguez singled to score JDP and the bases remained loaded. The Drillers scored 2 more when Young was HBP and McLain walked.
Wepf gave up a HR in the 7th for the final Wind Surge run.
The Drillers finished up the scoring with 3 in the 8th. JDP and 3B Jake Gelof each drew a BB. Hope doubled to score JDP with Gelof reaching 3rd. 1B Chris Newell singled to score Gelof with Hope stopping at 3rd. Hope scored on a SF from Rodriguez.
RHRP Kelvin Ramirez pitched a pair of clean innings with 3 K to finish the game.

RHSP Brooks Auger had some issues with the long ball in this one. He gave up a 2 out solo HR in the 1st, and a 1 out 2-run HR giving the TinCaps a 3-0 lead.
GL tied it up in the 4th. 3B Chase Harlan drew a BB and was WP to 2nd. With 1 out, RF Jose Meza doubled (9) to score Harlan. With 2 out, DH Cameron Decker reached base on an error with Meza scoring and Decker reaching 2nd. Decker scored on C Victor Rodrigues’ RBI single.
GL went out in front in the 8th inning. LF Samuel Munoz opened with a single. With one out, Rodrigues hit an RBI double (8) and scored when CF Charles Davalan singled.
The teams went into extra innings tied up at 5-5. Great Lakes would score in each of the next four innings, only to be matched by Ft. Wayne. GL scored another in the 14th inning, but Ft, Wayne scored a pair in the walkoff win.

The Ontario pitchers had an off night, and that is putting it kindly.
The offense also took the night off, scoring 4 runs on 7 hits, with only 1 XBH, Ching-Hsien Ko and a triple (1).
Ontario scored one in the 3rd. C Conner O’Neal walked and 2B Kellon Lindsey reached on catcher’s interference. CF Jaron Elkins drove O’Neal home with a single.
In the 5th, with one out, Elkins, Ko, and 1B Easton Shelton each walked to load the bases. SS Joendry Vargas hit a 2-run single.
In the 8th, Vargas singled, and with 2 outs, DH Javier Herrera reached on an error. That was followed by walks to Lindsey and LF Brendan Tunink walked with Vargas scoring on the Tunink walk.
Not much positive emanated from this game.

ACL Padres 5 – ACL Dodgers 4 – 7 innings
RHSP Tommy Case had a decent 4.0 innings. He allowed 2 runs on 6 hits, but only 1 BB, with 5 K. I like the 1 BB.
Down 2-1, the ACL Dodgers put up 3 in the 6th to take the lead. RF Jhon Gil led off with a double (2). DH Reyli Mariano reached base on a throwing error and Gil scored. 2B Elias Medina slugged a 2-run HR (2).
Relief pitching could not hold the lead as the Padres scored 3 in the bottom of the 6th to retake the lead and eventual win.

With the disclaimer that we really can’t rely on press releases about injured players—I am not comfortable to just sit back and say that Snell and/or Glasnow will really be ready for October. Also I think that Ohtani is NOT a robot. So no one wants to give up all those prospects plus Sheehan for rental of Skubal. And plus look how successful Vargas, Busch etc are this year. Well we are 14 games up, and best record in baseball WITHOUT all those guys we let get away. True we are great now, but still could use help for playoffs.
I would be very surprised if we DON’T sign a frontline starter by the deadline.

I did get tired of Joe Davis and Karros arguing about challenging pitches! Nelson got over excited about a couple of long outs last night. They actually weren’t even close to going out! I guess we don’t all agree on who’s good and who’s not. Gimme neverett and Monday 1. Davis and Orel2. Nelson and Karros 3. I’ve said it before. I hope my granddaughter’s get the same opportunities as Mendoza has has received. It’s never been about her being a woman. It’s simply that I don’t enjoy listening to her. But there are plenty of men that broadcast games in every sport who suck!

Kiké Hernández was one of those batters. Dodgers have been optimistic about Kiké’s recovery progress so far. This is an encouraging development.

Does anyone know why almost all the games are blacked out on MLB TV today?
Usually I only get the Phillies game blacked out. I get that the Dodgers are on NBC so I understand that but not the rest them.
Jess Mendoza has afforded me an opportunity to explore other broadcast options for the last 3 games and today.
It eliminates my routine of recording games so I can watch them later and skip the commercials.
So I’ve been watching in real time on mute, while listening to the Sirius Radio audio.
As I mentioned, I really enjoyed Rick Monday and Steven Nelson on Friday.
Last night I decided to try the Pud’s radio crew. I couldn’t do the TV crew. I can’t stand Don Orcillo and Mudcat Grant.
I really enjoyed some guy named Jesse Agler and Tony Gwynn Jr. Very nicely paced broadcast, with good information, insight and humor. And not over-the-top homecookin.
It was a treat the last 2 games to not get non-stop chatter and especially not getting the predicting, second-guessing and over analysis of pitch selections. John Smoltz is by far the worst and Orel isnt far behind.
What is it? NBC tonight for those of us not on the SportsNet LA connection?
I have my fingers crossed for Emmit. He needs a good outing.

Watched a little of Great Lakes today. Harlan, Davalan, Morales & Quintero is quite a quartet.
My bad Bear, I totally forgot about mookie’s double. Case in point, mookie is fine! Wrobleski did get snubbed, but as I said, he was a victim of his own team. Somebody will skip pitching in the game opening up the door for him. That’s if he doesn’t pitch right before the all star game.
I’m sure we don’t have all the information concerning Snell and Glasnow. That’s why I believe it’s 50-50 chance the Dodgers acquire a starter. Along with the possibility Sssaki continues his backward progression! It probably depends on the Dodgers and if they don’t mind giving Detroit a couple of top prospects and being comfortable in knowing that they won’t sign Skubal in the offseason. Can’t see them giving Skubal a 8-10 year contract! Maybe a contract similar to Tuckers? I’m sure the Mets will go all out for Skubal. Help yourself cohen! But if Sheehan doesn’t get better in tonight’s start, or his next start, with sasucki( as Bear calls him) being awful, I really do believe that AF goes and gets a starter. And yes, the Joe Ryan talk is still out there.

It’s still very satisfying to beat the Puds. I’m especially enjoying watching Machado hit a buck-eighty. Funny how we don’t see all that hot-dogging anymore and his “hey, look at me” bullshit.

He’s pushing 34 and while he will have an occasional moment, he looks about done to me. I certainly hope so.

So, Fangraphs has a new metric to evaluate minor league prospects! It’s an economic metric at its core, so I find it interesting and novel.
Basically, the idea is to measure worth / value in a realm of escalating FA salaries and condensed minor league rosters and spaces. It’s a move from evaluating systems based mostly on the aggregate value of individuals and instead including a weighting for deep systems that can produce value broadly. So! three key principles: cumulative war, surplus value ($$$ potentially saved with a prospect instead of FA at similar production levels) and upside (% of becoming elite)

Recentlty there was a discussion (debate?) about the status of Baseball as an enjoyable pasttime.
Well, on the recent effectively wild podcast, they have an unbelievably great conversation about the things the hosts and guests (Ben Lindbergh, Meg Rowley, Sam Miller and Grant Brisbee ) like about baseball and it’s truly wonderful.

Sure there is.
Though complain is a little strong I suppose. There are things to point out.
There appears to be no SP in the pipeline quite ready to step up and help during the summer months. Then there’s Sasaki. And Sheehan. Though Sheehan has looked good at times his 5 ERA and -0.1 WAR kinda sums up his season. The SP in general has been statistically quite good. Can it last to November? Who knows, but at an average of 5.2 IP per start, a seemingly low number to older fans, it sure feels like it should. You never know though. Ohtani, even being the stud he obviously is, sure appears to be working hard. He will put up the overall WAR again though his oWAR will be down from his previous two seasons. Sure hope he and Yamamoto remain standing for another 100 games or so.
I wonder how Glasnow and Snell’s vacations are going.
Let’s finish with a sweep today. Then 3 with Rockies and 3 with DBacks before the All-Star break. Nice 1st half.
Nice to see Miguel Vargas make the American League All Star team. The National League sure seems more stacked and will be a tougher road in the post season.
The Padres should trade RP Miller and SP King and start to blow up their team if they want to have any chance of competing. in the future.They would probably get a nice haul of prospects. Right now as we say in Italian the Padres are MORT in 2026.

As of right now it seems Justin Wrob. Is a victim of his own team’s success. It’s hard to argue against Supermoto being included on the all star team roster. There’s probably a very strong possibility he makes it as some pitchers will most likely be making starts right before the all star game. I’m not sure how his current schedule plays out as well. But the young man is sure deserving!
Speaking of Yamamoto, his only flaw seems to be inning number one. So let’s use an opener for the first inning and then let Yamamoto finish it up! Problem solved! I’m still taking him in any big game over anyone else! I believe overall he’s the best pitcher in the game! Just me.
