Some good news
Another Dodger pitcher to the Giants, Jake McGee is signing with SF. Sources say the Dodgers are interested in Miami 1B/Of Garret Cooper per MLB News and Rumors.
Mets interested in Turner, and Brewers still linked to him too. Angels signed Phil Gosselin to a minor league deal. Old friend JT Chargois signed with the Mariners. He spent 2020 with the Rakuten Eagles in Japan. May is going no where Bum. Neither is Gray.
Before ever giving Rios the opportunity to be the everyday guy, some folks want to go out right now and get Suarez or Chapman. If you do that you’d better include Rios in the trade. Otherwise, what’s his future? What’s his incentive for his hard work, improvement, and positive attitude? How long should talented prospects like Rios expect to have wait for an opportunity while an organization trades for players to dump on top of them with 2 and 3 year contracts? You can’t stockpile all these young kids as they mature, like a savings account. They eventually need to play or be traded.
Grant Brisbee, who covers the Giants for the Athletic, has a great column with regard to Bauer and the Dodger-Giant rivlary. He points out that as a fan you hate the opposition but it’s always much better if you can pick one guy to really hate. He says that Kershaw was not going to work because of his low-key personality. Puig worked to a certain extent but he was a little too happy go lucky.
Bauer, on the other hand, has the perfect personality. He’ll be like the villain in a wrestling extravaganza. Between his social media posts and his on-the-mound persona every Giant fan will despise him. I couldn’t agree more.
But take that one step farther. The Giants these days are mediocre at best and their players don’t really stand out very much. Now think about the Padres with all their attitude. Bauer-Padre games are going to be incredible to watch. Take everything that this new rivalry has and add Bauer to it.
Bauer has had a long standing feud with Bregman of the Astros. It will be fun to see who he picks to battle with on the Padres. Must See TV! (and Twitter).
The question is will AF sign Turner first and then make a trade to lower the payroll or visa versa? But Turner is coming back. There’s no where else for him to go and win
Villar to the Mets on a one year deal. Little over 3 mil.
I think I will add Rios to my favorite player list. This kid works hard and has worked hard. I want to see him succeed!
Kody Hoese will never be the defensive equal of Matt Chapman, but he could be the offensive equal. To get Chapman, the Dodgers would have to overpay and that overpay would likely have to include Hoese, Gray, and Ruiz. I think that would move the needle, but those are three players who could be really good for the Dodgers in the future.
Make JT your final offer (the rumor I heard from a friend close to the game is 3 years/$27 Million – I have no clue if that’s real or something he pulled out of something), and if he doesn’t take it, start the season with Rios and see what he can do. By the trade deadline, we will know.
That’s my story!
I wanted to thank Hodges for his kind words on the previous stream. I really appreciate them. Yes, we have a lot in common including a great respect for Gil Hodges. The years between 66 and 74 were pretty awful seasons. They had a few good players, and some kids came up. But they were not very competitive. I like Bellinger and Seager. I admire Turner’s leadership and consistency. But players move on so often these days that getting attached seems like a waste of energy. Although I did not care for some of his antics, I loved watching Puig play. He was indeed the wild horse.
Now that the DH will not be used in the NL the Dodgers should go ahead and adress 3b.
I think a trade for Chapman or Suarez is on the horizon.
I love JT but IMHO the Dodgers will be better served if they bring in someone who can fill the position long term.
With Bauer signed AF has some options regarding a trade involving maybe Gonsolin and Gray.
I would keep May at all costs however. Next ace in the making.
A trade of Gonsolin or Gray plus Ruiz plus some lower level prospect could fetch Suarez or Chapman.
Go Dodgers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I read 10 teams in playoffs….
MLB announced some changes. No split squad games this spring, and they are introducing a new baseball. Supposedly 1 ounce lighter and a little smaller. It is estimated it will take about 2 feet off of balls hit 375 feet. I guess they want to reduce the amount of HR’s hit. Won’t matter for the BIG POWER guys like Judge. But it could cost someone like say Taylor a homer or two in the regular season.
I remember when Shoemaker was in the Dodger system as a player. Got to AAA a couple of times, but never hit much. Had 1 HR in 4 seasons in the minors. Began managing in the Dodger system in 1987. 7 years after he hung up his spikes. Only managed 1 year at AAA with Las Vegas in 2003.
I like John Shoemaker a lot and I have to give credit to Bill Haselman who is the OKC bench coach. I admire him and feel he will do a fantastic job. I wonder though if it is hard to be a bench coach for a team he managed a few years ago and did a terrific job. What a coaching staff Travis Barbary will have. Good luck to all the youngsters on the Loons, Drillers, Quakes, OKC, Arizone and Dominion Summer players,
Glad you are doing so well Peter.
DBM – I’ll second that…
I’m just a hop, skip and a jump from Rancho and God willing and my salonpas patches keep working I’ll make a few games..
Wonder how Covid will affect ST as far as attendance???
I’m using less oxygen every day and that makes me happy and I’m looking at vaccine in the next couple months… Life is Good…
Yesterdays post by Bear was epic… I have my wife run a copy of most posts and call my best friend in VA and we spend an hour or more arguing and mostly reminiscing our days at the Coliseum and the Ravine…
So glad the minor league will have a season. Thanks for the information on them, Mark.
Never mind. I wasn’t aware he was previously the manager of the Loons. I remember him managing the 51s and the Suns some years back.
John Shoemaker as the manager of the Quakes is interesting. There is no minor manager in baseball with more experience on all levels. They wouldn’t plug him in at Low A without a reason.
