Let’s Play Ball – It’s Getting Close

John Shoemaker as the manager of the Quakes is interesting. There is no minor manager in baseball with more experience on all levels. They wouldn’t plug him in at Low A without a reason.
Never mind. I wasn’t aware he was previously the manager of the Loons. I remember him managing the 51s and the Suns some years back.
Some of you have seen this – I shot it about 10 years ago and you can see what a class act John Shoemaker is and how he loves teaching Minor League Players at the lowest levels. What a guy!
So glad the minor league will have a season. Thanks for the information on them, Mark.
DBM – I’ll second that…
I’m just a hop, skip and a jump from Rancho and God willing and my salonpas patches keep working I’ll make a few games..
Wonder how Covid will affect ST as far as attendance???
I’m using less oxygen every day and that makes me happy and I’m looking at vaccine in the next couple months… Life is Good…
Yesterdays post by Bear was epic… I have my wife run a copy of most posts and call my best friend in VA and we spend an hour or more arguing and mostly reminiscing our days at the Coliseum and the Ravine…
Thanks Peter. Kudos always appreciated. Coliseum was a weird place to watch games. Could hear Vinny every where. Hey Mark, since when did Sergio Mendez give up music with Brasil 66 and become a baseball coach?? LOL. I get my second covid shot on Friday.
I almost added that to his name, Bear!
I saw them in concert in El Paso in 1973. They were great.
I like John Shoemaker a lot and I have to give credit to Bill Haselman who is the OKC bench coach. I admire him and feel he will do a fantastic job. I wonder though if it is hard to be a bench coach for a team he managed a few years ago and did a terrific job. What a coaching staff Travis Barbary will have. Good luck to all the youngsters on the Loons, Drillers, Quakes, OKC, Arizone and Dominion Summer players,
Glad you are doing so well Peter.
I remember when Shoemaker was in the Dodger system as a player. Got to AAA a couple of times, but never hit much. Had 1 HR in 4 seasons in the minors. Began managing in the Dodger system in 1987. 7 years after he hung up his spikes. Only managed 1 year at AAA with Las Vegas in 2003.
MLB announced some changes. No split squad games this spring, and they are introducing a new baseball. Supposedly 1 ounce lighter and a little smaller. It is estimated it will take about 2 feet off of balls hit 375 feet. I guess they want to reduce the amount of HR’s hit. Won’t matter for the BIG POWER guys like Judge. But it could cost someone like say Taylor a homer or two in the regular season.
Per MLBTR article, weight is decreased by less than 1/10th ounce. (A 1 ounce difference would be huge).
No report on that site of change in diameter but I saw on another site (don’t remember which one) that the size change would be minimal.
5 more teams to use a humidor for the balls, but no word which additional 5 teams it would be.
Prediction is that it is the equivalent of moving fences out about 5 feet.
MLB and MLBPA agree on health issues. 26 man roster expanding to 28 in September, 7 inning double headers and man on 2nd in extra’s. 14 teams in playoffs. But no universal DH, which means pitchers will have to go back to hitting again.
No a fan of the man on second, but glad they agreed on something.
Also don’t like expanded playoffs but guess they’ve got to pay those bills and salaries.
I read 10 teams in playoffs….
You are right Jorge. My bad. I misread it. Do that a lot these days.
Now that the DH will not be used in the NL the Dodgers should go ahead and adress 3b.
I think a trade for Chapman or Suarez is on the horizon.
I love JT but IMHO the Dodgers will be better served if they bring in someone who can fill the position long term.
With Bauer signed AF has some options regarding a trade involving maybe Gonsolin and Gray.
I would keep May at all costs however. Next ace in the making.
A trade of Gonsolin or Gray plus Ruiz plus some lower level prospect could fetch Suarez or Chapman.
Go Dodgers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
First off, the Reds and A’s would have to be willing to move one of those guys. So far, neither has shown that inclination. Chapman is under team control for two more years, so moving him might not be an option at this point for Oakland. Suarez could possibly be moved by the Reds. But there has been less chatter about that in recent days. The Dodgers have to finish consummating the deal with Bauer. They do not have a roster spot open yet. Angels said to be close to a deal with former Astros closer, Antonio Osuna. Believe it or not, the other team said to be talking to him was the Dodgers. I less day until spring training. I cannot wait. Oh yeah, Dodgers first televised spring game is against the Cubs.
I wanted to thank Hodges for his kind words on the previous stream. I really appreciate them. Yes, we have a lot in common including a great respect for Gil Hodges. The years between 66 and 74 were pretty awful seasons. They had a few good players, and some kids came up. But they were not very competitive. I like Bellinger and Seager. I admire Turner’s leadership and consistency. But players move on so often these days that getting attached seems like a waste of energy. Although I did not care for some of his antics, I loved watching Puig play. He was indeed the wild horse.
Kody Hoese will never be the defensive equal of Matt Chapman, but he could be the offensive equal. To get Chapman, the Dodgers would have to overpay and that overpay would likely have to include Hoese, Gray, and Ruiz. I think that would move the needle, but those are three players who could be really good for the Dodgers in the future.
Make JT your final offer (the rumor I heard from a friend close to the game is 3 years/$27 Million – I have no clue if that’s real or something he pulled out of something), and if he doesn’t take it, start the season with Rios and see what he can do. By the trade deadline, we will know.
That’s my story!
I think I will add Rios to my favorite player list. This kid works hard and has worked hard. I want to see him succeed!
Welcome to the club. There’s a lot to like about Rios. He hit very well throughout the minors, he was a shortstop at FLU – which is basically a baseball academy and he hits monster bombs at an alarming rate. His defense was suspect at one time and now, it’s not only passable, but looks pretty good using the eye test. He’s never gonna be Scott Rolen, but I think he has a higher upside than Max Muncy and might very well be a first baseman by the time Muncy’s contract expires.
Villar to the Mets on a one year deal. Little over 3 mil.
The question is will AF sign Turner first and then make a trade to lower the payroll or visa versa? But Turner is coming back. There’s no where else for him to go and win
I’ve thought a lot about the possibility of potential trades in order to clear CBT space. First you have to figure out how to interpret the rules for the penalty for first time offenders which is where the Dodgers stand right now:
https://www.cbssports.com/mlb/news/mlb-luxury-tax-breaking-down-baseballs-competitive-balance-tax-and-how-it-affects-hot-stove-season/
20% on all overages
12% “surcharge” if over by $20-40 Million
45% if over 40 Million
I decipher this as if they are over by $40 Million the tax would be 40x.20=$8 Million plus 40x.12= 4.8 and 8+4.8 = $12.8M
I wonder why they don’t just state 32% on overages between 20-40 Million. Does this actually mean that the $40 Million is taxed at 20% and that the $20 million that falls in the 20-40 range is taxed at 12%? If so, it would look more like this. 40x.20=$8 Million plus 20x.12=$2.4M = $10.4M
The next threshold says anything over $40 million is 45%. So, using round numbers a $50M overage would result in a 50x.45 = $22.5 Million in taxes. Plus your first draft pick drops 10 places.
I don’t think that paying a surcharge of $10 – 12 M is a deterrent enough to prevent them from signing JT. I’m not even that sure that $22 M is a huge deterrent for a rich team. Hell, the Rockies sent $50 M to the Cardinals just to get a couple more not great prospects in the Nolan trade.
Then we have to talk about who we’re going to trade to get under a certain amount. Sportrac says the Dodgers are over by $29M, giving them about $10M to sign JT and stay under the last threshold. Usually, you would like to keep a little padding for in-season acquisitions as well. So let’s say they want to clear $6M in order to give JT $12M (MLBTR’s Estimate of 2year $24M for JT).
Then, look at who you can afford to trade to trim that $6M off the payroll.
This site lists 4 guys that could be traded to free up space…
https://dodgersway.com/2021/02/09/dodgers-rumors-salary-dump-trades-jansen-kelly-price-pollock/4/
The obvious place to start is relievers since we have too many to fit into the bullpen. A good baseline to use is that Treinen signed for $8M. Let’s say that Treinen is perceived to be better than Kenley and Kelly, so what are they worth? I’ll arbitrarily assign Kelly at 5M and Kenley at 6M. Probably a little high for Kelly and maybe a little low for Kenly. Trading Kelly won’t get you to 6M and you would have to eat $14M for Kenley. If they think Kenley is still a useful closer, does it make sense to eat $14M to save $10M in additional taxes? I don’t think it does. Just like I don’t think it makes sense to trade Price for the same reasons. Imagine how bad it would look if you traded Price and he wound up with better numbers than Bauer? Ouch, that would hurt.
Those three are probably the most obvious. The other is Pollock. Trading your best hitter against left handed pitching to bring back an older player that plays a position where you already have a better option for a replacement in Rios hardly sounds like a good move.
It seems like the smart move would be to sign JT to a three year deal that’s front loaded with opt outs and really shallow 3rd year ($5M?) to bring the price down, then trade someone mid-season like they did with Chicken Strip to squeeze in below the threshold. 3 year deal (12/12/5) would be 9.6 AAV and trade Kelly for a bag of peanuts and send $3M to pay for the peanuts? Either way, it makes a lot of sense to see what you got in Spring Training and see if any injuries prevent you from trading a player now, or creates demand for a player to be traded.
It seem more like they will eventually agree with Turner, not officially announce it until they can move a guy from the 40 man to the 60 day IL. They’re probably trying to trade someone right now in order to put Bauer on the roster without having to cut (my guess is) Sborz.
Grant Brisbee, who covers the Giants for the Athletic, has a great column with regard to Bauer and the Dodger-Giant rivlary. He points out that as a fan you hate the opposition but it’s always much better if you can pick one guy to really hate. He says that Kershaw was not going to work because of his low-key personality. Puig worked to a certain extent but he was a little too happy go lucky.
Bauer, on the other hand, has the perfect personality. He’ll be like the villain in a wrestling extravaganza. Between his social media posts and his on-the-mound persona every Giant fan will despise him. I couldn’t agree more.
But take that one step farther. The Giants these days are mediocre at best and their players don’t really stand out very much. Now think about the Padres with all their attitude. Bauer-Padre games are going to be incredible to watch. Take everything that this new rivalry has and add Bauer to it.
Bauer has had a long standing feud with Bregman of the Astros. It will be fun to see who he picks to battle with on the Padres. Must See TV! (and Twitter).
Before ever giving Rios the opportunity to be the everyday guy, some folks want to go out right now and get Suarez or Chapman. If you do that you’d better include Rios in the trade. Otherwise, what’s his future? What’s his incentive for his hard work, improvement, and positive attitude? How long should talented prospects like Rios expect to have wait for an opportunity while an organization trades for players to dump on top of them with 2 and 3 year contracts? You can’t stockpile all these young kids as they mature, like a savings account. They eventually need to play or be traded.
Totally agree!!
I am not a big Muncy fan and would like to include him in a package for Yankees 1B Voit but I think the A’s might like the idea of Rios at third plus a good cheap pitcher such as Gray, May, or Gonsolin.
Betts
Seager
Chapman
Bellinger
Voit
Lux
Smith
Pollock
That lineup does not need Pollock.
WTH
Do you have a better lineup or are you complaining about Turner and Muncy not in this one.?
Too much change for a WS winner. Also, Muncy is a stud. If you don’t like him, that might be your problem. Respectfully.
Mets interested in Turner, and Brewers still linked to him too. Angels signed Phil Gosselin to a minor league deal. Old friend JT Chargois signed with the Mariners. He spent 2020 with the Rakuten Eagles in Japan. May is going no where Bum. Neither is Gray.
Thanks for the heads up Bear re May and Gray. I agree at some point the rotation could include Urias, Gray, May, and Gonsolin if the Dodgers don’t want to spend $150M annually on a rotation.
Gonsolin is the elder statesman here. He turns 27 in May. May isn’t 24 until September. Gray won’t be 24 until next December. I would think Mitch White who is already 26 and Gonsolin would be traded before those two kids. But who knows. One of the Dodger blogs, cannot remember which suggests that Raley might get released since he also is getting past his mid 20’s. Official report date for pitchers and catchers is the 17th. First full squad workout is on the 23rd. Baseball getting closer.
I thought Raley was a decent hitter coming up. Pretty good average, and just average power. But, the word out of the alternate site last year say that he has massive biceps and was hitting balls into the parking lot.
Another Dodger pitcher to the Giants, Jake McGee is signing with SF. Sources say the Dodgers are interested in Miami 1B/Of Garret Cooper per MLB News and Rumors.
Cooper hits right handed and he’s much cheaper than JT.
Should we let the fact that he doesn’t play third and there is no DH this year make a difference?
He’s from Torrance so that’s good.
And if we get him Bear it’ll make up for the fact that you won’t be able to root for Tyler White this year.
Actually his numbers have been improving every year. Maybe he’ll be another Muncy-Taylor discovery if he winds up in a Dodger uni.
It would be JT and Cooper. We need two bats.
White huh? Doubt I ever rooted for him.
You doubt you ever rooted for him?
You spent every waking moment lobbying for him to get cut or traded.
Well I guess I rooted for him to get out of town. He was lousy.
