LHSP Cole Irvin started for OKC.  He allowed a HR in the 1st, and a another in the 4th.  Overall, Irvin pitched well enough to win in the PCL.  Just the two runs on 5 hits and 3 BB.  He did strike out one.  But he left trailing 2-0 after 6.0 IP.

LHRP Ronan Kopp pitched a scoreless 7th inning, issuing 1 BB.

The Comets got one back in the 7th and a pair of doubles from LF Jack Suwinski (6) and DH Eliézer Alfonzo (3).

RHRP Paul Gervase entered in the 8th and surrendered a HR.

Eliézer Alfonzo hit his first HR in the 9th to pull within 1.  SS Noah Miller followed with a single, but he was left there to end the game.

On the pitching side, RHRP Nick Robertson bailed Crowell in the first, and then threw 3.0 additional scoreless innings.  He allowed a single, did not walk anyone, and registered a pair of K.

Box Score

Great Lakes Loons 13 – Beloit Sky Carp (Miami) 9

RHSP Logan Tabeling surrendered a 3-run HR in the first inning.  Tabeling proceeds to pitch the next 3.2 scoreless innings, allowing a single and 2 walks.  LHRP Cody Morse got the final out in the 5th.

GL started their come back in the 2nd.  With one out, LF Jose Meza, 1B Cameron Decker, and C Jesus Galiz drew a BB.  DH Samuel Munoz and SS Jose Izarra each hit run scoring singles to pull to within 1.

In the 3rd, 2B Nico Perez led off with a double.  RF Eduardo Quintero singled Perez home to tie the score.  Decker and Galiz each drew a BB to load the bases.  During the BB, Quintero stole 2 bases.  Munoz hit a 2 run single and a 5-3 lead.

In the 4th, three Loons again drew consecutive BB to load the bases. 3B Logan Wagner singled home two runners.  With 2 runners on, Meza and Galiz both drew BB to force a run in.  GL now leading 8-3.

The score stood until the 7thRHRP Reynaldo Yean entered and faced five batters.  A single followed by 4 BB and Yean was pulled.  RHRP Dilen Figueredo relieved Yean and inherited the bases loaded.  Figueredo gave up a 2-run double and 2-run single before settling down to retire the side.

Now trailing 9-8, Quintero led off the 8th with a ground rule double (1).  After Meza walked and Galiz doubled home both runners, giving GL the lead.

Figueredo and LHRP Justin Chambers got the final 6 outs, 4 by K.

The Loons got 14 BB with Meza, Decker, and Galiz each walking 3 times.

I do not know if it is a sign of coming out of his season long slump, but Eduardo Quintero had 3-5 night with a BB, scored 4 runs, and knocked in 4.  Munoz and Izarra both had a pair of singles.

AJ Soldra hit his 2nd HR (3) of the game giving Ontario a 4-3 lead.

Giants threatened in the 8th with RHRP Ricardo Montero on the hill.  He walked the first two hitters in the inning.  That brought RHRP Robby Porco in relief.  He retired the first batter on a sac bunt.  Next hitter got a 5-3 ground out.  He hit the next batter to load the bases, and then struck out the next batter to end the threat.

    1. Nestor Rios. He was/is a position player who looks to be transitioning to pitching. He just turned 21.

  1. Will all or nothing show up today?
Be nice to put Cubs in their place, including their twirling dervish CFer!

  2. Jeff,
Nobody has ever made it this easy to follow the Dodgers minors. Thanks to you, us fans are going to know these prospects so well we will be sending birthday wishes to their parents. Great job!
Kim set the table again last night.

Do you think the Dodgers are considering keeping speed and small ball factors in the lineup ahead of the boppers? It really is more exciting fun baseball.

    1. IMO, those players will continue to exist, but will be at the bottom of the lineup, rather than at the top. I miss the days of Wills, Lopes, and Butler at the top of the lineup. But it looks like those days are gone. Dodgers do not run like they used to, at least at the MLB level.

Kendall George leads off for Tulsa, but he would bat 9th for LAD.

  3. Alex Cora is looking for a job…

Perhaps, he could clean the latrines in Ontario. POS!

    1. Maybe Cora could start up a Garage Band. He could be the drummer on the garbage can. POS is right.

  4. Jeff has always been the best with providing detailed MiLB reports. Thanks again for your work.

The read kinda sounds like the minor league pitching hasn’t rounded into form yet

I’ve always felt Smoltz talks too much but last night I really enjoyed hearing his commentary. When I watch a game I always try to analyze what pitch where should be next and it was like he was sitting next to me and we were talking together. It was fun. Especially with that game. I thought he and Davis were excellent together.

They made a couple of points I wanted to mention here. One: Sasaki is still quite young for a move like the one he is making. The stuff is there. The make up is there. Patience is needed

The second thing was about Pittsburgh and Skenes. Will this be the year they finally compete and if not will they trade him. He’s a local guy. Played at El Toro High about a mile from where I live. Same school Arenado went to. Though he was an Angels fan growing up, I’m sure Skenes would love to play for the Dodgers. He’s arb eligible next year and his salary will likely increase 20x. Will Pittsburgh pay that? The Dodgers have the players to bring him home to Southern California. I’m hoping there’s a chance.

    1. The Pirates need hitters. They are not a good-hitting team. If they could get 3 position players and 2 pitchers back, they might be a better team next year. But this one will hurt. It depends upon who they value the most (every team is different), but they would have their choice of Quintero, DePaula, Sirota, Hope, Freeland, Davalan, JT3, and Morales (pick 3). Then, what about pitchers? Ferris, Ryan, Serwinowski, Root, Zazueta, and Copen (pick 2). I think the Pirates MIGHT consider that. Would the Dodgers?

      1. Actually the Pirates need a new owner. Nutting and his father lead a group that paid $92M for the team in 1996. Over the next ten years the Nuttings increased their ownership and eventually bought out the remaining owners in 2006 for $9M and assumed a pile of debt. The team was valued at $1.6B in 2026.

Bob Nutting bases the teams’ payroll on ticket and concession sales. Anytime the payroll is less than those sales he keeps the difference. Nutting keeps all local and national TV revenue. He, also, pockets the subsidies paid by large market teams. Recently, those revenues came in at over $200M for the year. So, not only is the return on the value of the team skyrocketed over $1.5 billion, he has probably has pocketed over another couple of billion during his 20+ year ownership. The payroll for this season for the Pirates is projected to be $107M which is 23rd in MLB.

This is the same MO for the Oakland/ Sacramento/ Las Vegas owner as well as Tampa Bay and Miami. MLB and the players’ union should get this issue resolved during next years negotiations. Owners shouldn’t be allowed to purchase a team in order to provide them with a personal cash flow. Allow the team value to increase by providing a winning team. This is, also, great for the fans being they are footing the bill for everything.

The Dodgers are a perfect example of the two approaches with the McCourts who ran the team into bankruptcy and Guggenheim who reinvest more onto the team than any previous ownership group in history. Frank McCourt got his ass bailed out by Guggenheim who paid $2.2 billion, assumed $600M in debt, and still gave old Frank a % of the parking lot revenue. Frank’s ex wife, Jamie, is still walking bowlegged from her settlement with Parking Lot Frank.

Sorry for the rant on another team. But, it pisses me off for the Pittsburgh baseball fans who have been supportive in the past. They have a beautiful stadium (paid for by the city, not Nutting) and one of the brightest stars in MLB to build around. It’s time MLB have a talk with Nutting and the other owners who are not using the monies baseball fans provide them to maximize the player development and talent their fans deserve. Their are plenty of billionaires out there who would be better owners than a few of the current billionaire “penny pinchers” that aren’t helping to improve their teams and, therefore, MLB.

        Carry on.

        1. Solid points Ted, but who in MLB will be the ones talking to the owners? The owners are MLB. They don’t listen to fans. They don’t have to. Fans line up and throw money at them no matter what they do and the money is then divided between them. It’s a billionaire boys club that makes their own rules. The only voices that ever challenge them is the millionaire boys club players association, and we know how that plays out every 5 years or so. They get vacations and the fans get screwed.

So what to do? I suggested a fans Opening Day boycott several years ago. I was laughed out of the chat room on that one. But I’m open for suggestions. I’m also open for discussions on who to send to Pittsburgh for Skenes. He’s probably going to average 7 WAR for 7 years. It’s going to take probably 5 players that will be both controllable and project that much WAR plus a point or two. Mark mentioned some names, as did I the other day, which included the Ontario franchise and Timmons. I didn’t get any feedback on my offer. In all seriousness I think it begins with our best prospect and at least 3 other players. Since it’s the Nuttings maybe a van full of money could be thrown in. Again, I’m open for suggestions here.

    2. I heard Smoltz’s assessment of Roki and agree that we need to be patient with him. Maddening sometimes when you see him leave pitches right over the plate in an 0-2 count to Suzuki and he sits on the fastball and crushes it. Then other times he has great movement and makes the hitters look foolish. Seems like he is still getting used to new country and slight change in the size of the ball in MLB. The potential is sure there.

Hope we get the series win today. 2 lefties on the mound Wrobo and Imanaga, should be a good matchup.

Padres just keep finding ways to win. They were down 4-0 and came back and beat DBacks. Did the same against Colorado earlier this week scoring 5 in the 9th.

      1. Padres will fade. Their starting pitching isn’t that good. Only a matter of time.

      2. From AI:

        Key Concerns
Injury Decimation: The rotation has been hit hard by injuries to its most reliable arms. Yu Darvish is out for the entire 2026 season following elbow surgery. Joe Musgrove suffered a setback in his return from Tommy John surgery and remains without a clear return date. Nick Pivetta also recently entered the injured list.

Depth Issues: Beyond the top three or four starters, the Padres have struggled to find a consistent fifth starter, leading to a “patchwork” group. The team recently signed Lucas Giolito to bolster the rotation, though he already faced an injury scare in a minor league appearance.

Inconsistency: While some pitchers like Randy Vásquez have shown flashes of excellence (posting a 1.88 ERA early on), others like Walker Buehler have struggled to meet expectations.

      1. Open mouth, insert foot, close mouth. He is a kid, he will learn, but he is also a talented player. He was just overmatched last night. I actually just realized last night that Kim has just one more year after this one on his contract.

        1. After the three years, the Dodgers have two club options at $5MM each. Kim will be a Dodger through 2029.

          1. Okay, Davis did not mention that on the telecast, he just referred to Kim’s original 3-year deal. I stand corrected as I often do.

  5. Sunday Dodger’s Affiliates’ Schedule
11:05 a.m. PT: Great Lakes (Christian Zazueta) at Beloit (Aiden May)
1 p.m.: Ontario (TBA) at San Jose (Cody Delvecchio)
2:05 p.m.: Oklahoma City (Ryder Ryan) vs. Tacoma (Casey Lawrence)
2:05 p.m.: Tulsa (TBA) at Frisco (David Davalillo)

      1. Christian Zazueta is legit. He is 21 and pitching well at Great Lakes. I do not like making such labels before they produce at AA. At 21, Jackson Ferris started at AA last year. Struggled early, but caught on 2nd half. He is struggling again at AAA to start the season. I think he will find his way.

  6. Nice to see a little offense. Sasaki was better, and he got through five. I thought it was a mistake to send him back out for the sixth. But Dreyer and then Klein, kept the Cubbies off of the board. Max was under the weather, that is why he was pulled after his third at bat. Pages looked relieved after getting two hits. Teo looked even more relieved after his 2-run single. Ohtani still does not look right. He is hitting under .200 at Dodger Stadium, so is Tucker. Not only is Cora out of a job, but so are four of his coaches. Jason Varitek, who was the game planning coach, was reassigned. The Sox interim manager is Chad Tracy, former Dodger manager Jim Tracy’s son. Andy Ibanez DFAd by the A’s to make room for Rooker. Rams drafted two players from Alabama, and one each from Miami, Ohio State and Missouri. The kid QB they drafted from Alabama will learn a lot from Stafford.

  7. Jeff,
Has any future Dodger starting pitcher been productive this year? And who are you most high on? Besides Bruns!

    1. RHSP Patrick Copen, LHSP Luke Fox, RHSP Christian Zazueta are my top three…today. LHSP Adam Serwinowski had a fantastic start last week. Let’s see if he can be consistent. I still believe he will produce. At Great Lakes, LHSP Sterling Patick has a chance to develop.

None of them look to be top rotation guys. But they could be solid mid to late rotation starters. Some are already labeling Serwinowski as a late inning high leverage reliever. Fox and Zazueta look to be best options to join rotation. If Copen can harness his control, he could climb very quickly.

I am not quitting on Wyatt Crowell, but he will probably find a home in the pen.

I am in the process of my April summary, so I can give a more detailed answer.

        1. He might be, which is why I did not list him. He has not been healthy yet. Chronic? Maybe, maybe not.

  8. I have never been impressed with PCA. Everyone was singing his praises at the All-Star Break last year when he had 25 HR in 401 PAs. He was hitting .265, but his OB% was .302, and his OPS was .847. Not bad!

However, he has hit 7 HR’s since that. He had a .262 BA in the second half of 2025 with a .634 OPS. He’s even worse this year with a .235 BA and .605 OPS.

The Cubs signed him to a 6-year/$115 million deal in the offseason. Alex Freeland is a better hitter than PCA, and to top it all off, he’s a POS, as AVF articulated!

    1. PCA is not a POS.

Geez guys. Let’s save such remarks for our siblings that made a face at us.

    2. I have been a fan of PCA. Forgetting last night’s adventure in CF, he is an elite defensive CF with tremendous speed. He is not a 30 HR guy. He is an immature 24 year old who was trying to endear himself to his Chicago base. How do you think Giants fans feel about Rushing after his immature comments directed at Jung Hoo Lee. I liked the spark, but I am a Dodgers fan. Logan Webb has made some nasty comments about the Dodgers.

People have been saying things about LAD fans since they moved to LA. How many times have we heard “show up late and leave early”. Remember the car lights leading out of Dodger Stadium when Gibby walked it off in ’88. PCA deserves to be booed. And it is great that he struck out 4 times last night, and looked lost in CF.

Funny thing about the cameras, is that the other fan bases also have their cameras out when the Dodgers come to their town.

IMO the only POS playing today is Manny Machado.

      1. Guys are always dissing on other teams. Imai, when he signed with Houston said he would get great pleasure out of beating the Dodgers and the guy has never pitched in the majors until this year. He was punished, he is now on the IL and most likely will be there when Houston plays LA in May.

  9. Smolts never shut up starting in the first inning.
He even speculated what the pitcher would have thrown had the previous pitch been a strike. “Sasaki has to stay with his inconsistencies until he becomes consistent” John, shut up!

I spent the game paying close attention to Roki’s pitch shapes. I know, the Dodgers have state of the art toys to evaluate everything about every pitch, so for an old man with a remote like me to analyze Sasaki’s stuff is the lowest end of the spectrum. I used my eye balls.

Roki’s pitch shapes are wildly inconsistent, one to the next. The good ones are crisp and effective, but far to often, they aren’t.
Roki features 3 pitches. A 4-seamer at 97ish, a slider at 87ish and his reported out-pitch, his splitter (forkball). that apparently, he is trying to throw the harder.
To me, he has all 3 pitches from 97 to 87; with no slow stuff to get a hitter out front.
He “fools” the MLB pitch identifier, which lists his 4-seamer sometimes as a sinker but to me his 4-seamer is straight as an arrow. He lacks the hop to effective work the top of the zone. His high fastball, located up, is very hittable.
Maybe move those figures around or change finger pressure to get some movement. Or go to a 2-seamer?
His secondary stuff all goes the same way, right to left. The good spitter gets some arm-side depth but too often it breaks like his slider, lacking arm-side depth. His command and release of that splitter varies wildly. The good ones are great. The poor one’s are meat.
He has an inconsistent feel and release on his slider, which I think is horseshit. About 1 out of 4 have teeth. The others back up or hang. No Yak. Hanging sliders go a long way.
His 3 pitches can, when thrown right, be effective. But they don’t come out of his hand consistently. When all 3 don’t break as intended, he gets too much of the zone and gets hit. Inconsistent shape and command. He lacks a change up.

Yesterday, Roki was okay. His line was typical with 3 dingers and 99 pitches through 5. The Dodgers scoring 12 didn’t hurt.
And as many point out, right now the Dodgers down’t have much choice.

I don’t really know how his stuff played in Japan. It must have been special. It isn’t now. Maybe it’s inexperience. He’s only 24. Maybe he is learning to pitch in MLB instead of perfecting his pitch shapes and repeatability and perhaps adding a pitch – in AAA. He’s being forced to pitch in the Bog Leagues when he isn’t ready? Is he better in the bullpen?
Perhaps he’s suffering from arm issues. I don’t know, but I do know he’s not as advertised. Not yet anyway.

The Dodgers were out of challenges in the 3rd and fortunately we didn’t need them. I thought the “take” on the Challenge System by Joe and Smoltz was interesting.
    Both like the system.
Both care more about the strategy and entertainment created by the Challenge System than getting all the pitches correct.
Smoltz stated that full-time ABS would “negatively effect batting averages”
Huh? Calling all strikes and balls correctly would drop batting averages?
I don’t get that one. Maybe someone can explain that one to me.
Davis said that ABS takes away the “subtlety” of baseball.
    Huh again?

    1. Smoltz and Hershiser from the same broadcast school I believe. I prefer someone else in the booth not named Karros. I really like Nomar when he rarely handles that job. Glad they do not use J-Hair. He would never shut up. Personally, I believe that part of Sasaki’s problem is that high leg kick when he is not in the stretch. To me it seems he loses the plate momentarily.

    2. “ Maybe move those figures around or change finger pressure to get some movement”.

You’re not the first person to suggest this. Any idea why this hasn’t been done? Is it possible this was tried but hasn’t been successful in bullpen sessions?

What I find more confusing is that during the WBC in ‘23, Sasaki evidently threw his splitter at 90/91 mph. Yesterday was the first time he did so as a Dodger. Why wasn’t he doing it last year? Was it due to arm soreness? Or mechanics that were so out of wack?

As for ABS, the players like the current system as do most fans (who watch for entertainment). So, don’t expect any changes anytime soon.

      1. I suggested a two seamer. It’s a sinker that can break both ways through thumb placement. In my opinion Sasaki is a candidate for that pitch. Heck, every pitcher is. And a circle change is not that difficult to learn either. These guys are professionals. It’s all they do. Figure it out dammit.

I read somewhere Sasaki was throwing 100+ in Japan. He ain’t here. Why is that?

I’ve been a proponent of the ABS system for a while now. And I have been because of the varying shapes of MLB umpires zones I see on different sites. All of them are shaped like a vertical football. Corners of the box were not getting called. Apparently now they are. At least more so. This challenge system has forced umps to get better. As for how it would change batting averages, those corners are the most difficult to hit so if they aren’t being called hitters don’t have to swing at them. With ABS they will be called, so it’s possible averages will go down. The strike zone has already been shrunk about a foot. Remember when it was arm pitts to bottom of knee? I sure do. Now it’s navel to knee. You want more offense just make it belt buckle to nut sack. That will put more runners on.

        1. Circle change is not that difficult to learn“. Tell that to Kershaw who could never figure it out. Then with his slider and curve, he did not need to.

          1. A lot of guys threw, and continue to throw it successfully. Hershiser, Pedro, Trevor Hoffman, Glavine, Maddux, Hamels, Ryu, Johan Santana, Devin Williams, Christopher Sanchez and yes Gagne. Heck, I threw in MABL when I was 50. Same with a two seamer. Just throw it over the middle of the plate and the movement will take it away from the sweet spot.

    1. Interesting that Kim is facing a lefty rather than Freeland. I wonder if the Dodgers are trying to get a further read in his capabilities? Of course it could just be Roberts giving Freeland a day off.

          1. “During his pregame media scrum, Roberts said Smith could play today, but they didn’t want to push him. He is currently day-to-day, and they are not considering an injured list stint, according to Jack Harris of the California Post”.

  11. Nice job by Wrobo-cop today. Gritty job too. Traffic on the bases the entire game. Rojas with a huge hit. Shohei looks better today too.

    1. Great to see a young guy pitch through it when he doesn’t have his best stuff. For me, this is a more impressive outing than his last two.

      1. I agree. Also nice to have Nomah in the booth. Lower key than Hershiser or Karros. Arizona came from being down 7-2 to score 10 runs in the 7th and 8th innings for a 12-7 win. Padres BA by their big stars are pretty anemic. Machado .209, Tatis Jr. .250, Merrill .214, Cronenworth .155. Andujar, Campusano, Bogaerts, and Laureano are the guys getting it done. Their bullpen totally imploded today. LA back in first by 1/2 game.

    1. Freddie is not ill. He has just not really found his stroke yet, neither has Tucker. Ohtani looked more like Ohtani.

  12. Great win.

Mets will fire their manager if this score stays.

    Cubs are overrated.

    1. Mets are not the Red Sox. Cohen’s guys hired their manager, they just got Soto back, but losing a doubleheader to the Rockies does not look good on one’s resume. Doubt the Cubs are overrated. They are a gritty team. They did not get the big hit today, but Dodger pitching was under pressure all game long. Their biggest weakness right now is pitching. You do not win 10 in a row if you are not as good as advertised, and the last couple of years, they have owned LA,

  13. Mets have DFAd Tommy Pham and are signing Austin Slater. Yankees recalling Jasson Dominguez. Yanks optioned Luis Gil to AAA. Angels DFAd Jordan Romano and recalled Joey Lucchesi. Vince Velasquez, who pitched against the Dodgers Saturday night, DFAd by the Cubs.

  14. Is it possible that Ohtani’s slow start has to do with pitching from the beginning of the season? (An Ohtani slow would be a great start for most players.)

    Thoughts!!!
