Preller Sends Out His Resume

At the trade deadline, all of the sports media proclaimed that the Padres had “Won the Trade Deadline.” After all, they got O’Hean, Lauerano, Sears, and (OMG) Mason Miller, who throws 150 MPH as a closer. The Dodgers and every other MLB team were warned that the Padres were the best of the best.

Yeah, Right!

Many of the less astute Dodger fans bought into this, too, and they wondered why Andrew Friedman didn’t overhaul the Dodgers’ Farm System and acquire these players. See, the game of baseball is not played on paper. It is played on a diamond… in a stadium… by real players. AJ Preller gutted the Padres’ farm system so that they could get a Wild Card spot and go home. He will likely be looking for another job soon.

All I will say is “I told you so!”

The Padres are sitting at home watching the playoffs with the worst farm system in baseball, while the Dodgers are headed to the NLDS with one of the best farm systems in baseball. The same fans who criticized Andrew Friedman for not following the Padres’ lead are now watching the Dodgers advance. The Dodgers’ farm system is intact, and their future is bright as a result.

AJ Preller has seldom done the right thing, but he will get another job. The Dodgers could use a person who can pick up laundry, jockstraps, towels, and uniforms – Preller is well qualified for that.

Watch and learn, Morons! I say that kindly!

  1. I love it. Fuck A.J. Preller. Fuck the Padres, low-life wannabees. And Go Fuck Yourself, San Diego.

  2. Could not disagree more.

I think Preller is great and aggressive. They scout really well. and draft well too.

Obviously a fan base wants a World Series title, but as we’ve discussed that’s overly impacted by luck.

Preller goes for it every year, and reloads every year, why would San Diego move on from him? Or want to?

    1. The Book of Moron doesn’t seem to understand that Preller doesn’t have the resources that AF has. He doesn’t have the Dodgers checkbook, tradition and mystique — all those qualities that helped lure Shohei to the Dodgers, and no doubt Shohei was a lure for Yamamoto and Sasaki….. and frankly anybody else who wants to play for a powerhouse winner.
You know something else about the Padres? They have a large and loyal fan base. The Pads are, sad to say, the only game in town in San Diego, and they have habit of filling the stadium because the Padres are CONTENDERS year after year, as the Dodgers know too well.
Getting Mason Miller was a smart move. Maybe the “Top 5!” SS prospect he gave up will be the next A Rod or maybe another Top 5 guy like Gavin Lux. Decent player, but totally replaceable. Is Lux better than Miguelito? Well, he was supposed to be. The jury’s still out. Hey, maybe that dude will be next Cartaya, who inspired a helluva lot of gushing on this site. Mason Miller, on the other hand, has already proven himself to be prime young pitching talent. The Padres will have him for at least two more seasons, if I recall correctly. Perhaps he’ll go back to being a starter. Whatever. In terms of talent and youth, his peers are guys like Skenes, Skubal, Crochet… perhaps Sasaki too.
Does anyone seriously believe that the Dodgers never had the inside track on Sasaki? Do you think that playing field was level?
I certainly don’t fault the Dodgers for pressing their advantage. But what if you are Preller and thus at a disadvantage? What if you don’t have the luxury of sitting back and adding Alex Call and Brock Stewart and thinking, “This is fine!” You take a risk. You add several pieces and you GO FOR IT. And how often does a guy like Mason Miller, with a few years of control, become available on the trade market?
So Preller took a big swing, and the ball he hit basically got caught close to the wall. The Pads fell short–but then they got unlucky with Laureano’s injury. And what if Fermin got a hit in his last AB? They were underdogs against the Cuba who put up a good fight. But they never had a lead that they could have protected with that powerhouse pen–except in Game Two, when Miller struck out five guys in a row…. Yeah, he’s pretty good.
BTW, the offer I’d have made for Mason Miller would have started with De Paula, because he’s allegedly the Dodgers’ top prospect now….even though he didn’t really crush 2A pitching. (Lose DePaula and the OF prospects still include Hope, Quitero, Sirota, Tibbs and more.) I’d have included Edgardo Henriquez, because he’s a young power pitcher like Miller who, unlike Miller, hasn’t really figured out how harness it. And maybe I’d toss in an SP like Bobby Miller or Maddux Bruns–talented guys who may not have a future with the Dodgers. Perhaps a change of scenery, with less pressure, is all they need.
MLBTradeValues might say it’s an overpay, and the Book of Moron (who was a Nohtani guy before he wasn’t!) would say it’s better to hoard and hug prospects because you never know which one might be a superstar. Which is true, and which is why I argue you shouldn’t hug so tightly because you can miss out on an actual superstar in the trade market.
But hey, if you’ve got a gigantic checkbook, it’s easier to just overpay guys like Scott, Yates and Conforto.
Thank goodness Sasaki is stepping up. Roki to the rescue!

      1. The argument you are making for trading away the farm is actually the argument for keeping the farm intact. Tampa Bay is the antithesis of San Diego, and since Preller took over the Padres, they have a .490 winning percentage vs. the Rays, who have a .533 winning percentage over that same time frame.

San Diego has repeatedly gutted their farm trying to win (Soto was a recent one).

Preller’s methods have been a failure, and looking forward, the Padres’ prospects are growing dimmer.

  3. I hope the Madres keep him. Selling the farm year after year will guarantee they stay competitive without actually ever being contenders.

  4. I don’t know if I agree or not with people talking badly about San Diego, I love that team!!

  5. I love The city of San Diego. I love what they bring to the national League West. But when they went to the ice cream vendor uniforms, that’s when I drew the line. Those uniforms belong in the minor leagues with the Savannah bananas.
Machado had a nice heartfelt interview last night after the game. Has to be tough for a competitor like him to lose in the way that they did. I wish them well as long as they’re not playing the Dodgers.
With the teams that are left, it’s going to be a real war to the World Series.

  6. Preller is getting fired?
For putting a exciting, winning product on the field and setting a new franchise record for attendance?
While the Dodgers set a new MLB attendance record, with over 4 million total attendance and an average of 49, 536 per game, the team from San Diego finished second with more than 3.4 million, besting the Yankees, Phils, Mets and Cubs.
Go figure, right? The mighty Yankees and megabuck Mets, catering to the nation’s largest market, got beat by the Friars, representing a city than Dave Winfield once likened to “a cul-de-sac.”
If owned the Padres, I’d be pretty happy with the job AJ Preller is doing.
But hey, maybe the Book of Moron is right about this prophecy!
If so, he’ll be sure to tell us!
If not, well…. he might forget.

  7. My Dad grew up in San Diego and loved it. His grandfather took him to a good many Padres games when they were in the PCL. So I had a soft spot for them for many years. But let’s face it, they are the antithesis of the Dodgers. Their most redeeming feature being that they make a great villain for the good guys in blue.

  8. Their big failure in this series is I think is as before. When it came to coming thru Tatis, Arreaz, Machado all disappeared.
That’s their ‘big three’. So the acquisitions might have helped, but the ‘core’ failed

  9. machado? tatis? nuff said. i didn’t mind the friars when Tony Gwynn played there. he was one of the best hitters in my lifetime. He was a good guy period! the 2 clowns there now? class minus the c and the L!! now the padres did get a bad call on that strike 3 pitch. i feel bad for them! yeah right! … hopefully Will Smith is 100% healthy for this series! need him against the lefties. Sanchez is tough! so what! dodgers win.

  10. Machado is an excellent player during the regular season. He is a dud in the postseason. He has a .209 BA in 14 post season series. A couple of those with the Orioles were actually just 1 game. His best games have come in the NLCS which he has appeared in twice. His best was with LA in 18, he hit .296, with a homer and 3 driven in. He followed that up with a 4-22 performance in the 18 World Series, striking out for the last out of the Series. All of his hits were singles. The rest of his series he is just above .200 or below. Overall, he has hit 12 postseason homers and driven in 29. He has struck out 57 times and walked 13. Most of his homers have been solo shots. I respect his skills, but he has a worse post season record than Bellinger, who has hit .213, and won a NLCS MVP with a .200 BA in 18 when Machado was his teammate.

  11. my NLDS roster predictions:

    Bats:
    Smith
    Rortvelt
    Freeman
    Rojas
    Betts
    Muncy
    Pages
    Teo
    Edman
    Kike
    Kim

    Arms:
    Snell
    YY
    Ohtani
    Glasnow
    Treinen
    Casparius
    Vesia
    Dreyer
    Banda
    Henriquez
    Sheehan
    Roki Sasaki
    Wrobo
    Clayton Kershaw

If Smith is still far away, then Rushing over Kim

    1. Too many pitchers. You have 14 including Ohtani. They can only carry 13. Henriquez will be left off.

  12. Is will smiths injury such that he could hit but not catch? If so, otahni to the outfield and smith to dh?

  13. Is will smiths injury such that he could hit but not catch? If so, otahni to the outfield and smith to dh?

  14. I think AJ Preller’s trades have been an absolute disaster, and I am working on proving that.

AS I got into it, this is much worse than I anticipated.

    Trea Turner
    James Woods
    CJ Abrams
    MacKenzie Gore
    Max Fried
    Andres Munoz
    Emmanuel Clase
    Josh Naylor
and a whole lot more were traded away by Preller.

His methods are of the dope-fiend variety.

    1. Process > Outcome

again, as discussed, the point is to make the postseason and hope things break well.

  15. Rotation set, I was wrong. As usual.

    Ohtani Game 1
Snell Game 2 (6 days rest)
    YY Game 3

Roberts also said Glasnow would be available in relief in Game 1 against the Phillies, which would line him up to start Game 4 if necessary.
