According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, the Dodgers tried to get Garrett Crochet at the last minute before the trade deadline. According to Ken, the Dodgers made River Ryan available, but the Sox were worried about his health. Dalton Rushing was not made available. Rosenthal also intimated that the Dodgers could have had Crochet for less prospect collateral by taking back Andrew Benintendi and the $47.5 Million owed to him over the next three years.
Of course, that did not happen, and the Dodgers got Jack Flaherty for Sweeney and Liranzo. The Yankees had previously dumped Sweeney, and I have never been a believer that he would ever be a regular. Liranzo is a 1B or DH and a ways off, so that was a great deal. I like Fklaherty a lot after I found out his past issues were mechanical.
Glasnow is back on the IL, which is a very good thing… assuming it is just a little tendonitis in his elbow, which is what is being reported. He is needed in the playoffs. He should come back in time to make a couple of starts before the postseason. He has 134 IP, which is his career high. He should easily have 12-13 wins if the Dodgers had given him the run support. Now, we watch and wait on Yamamoto and Miller!

- As a Leadoff Hitter, this year, Shohei Ohtani is hitting .324 with a .400 OB% and a 1.148 OPS. Late and Close, he is OPS’ing 1.205. Yes, he is in a slump and it happens to the best of them. To say he is not a leadoff hitter is just plain silly!

I guess the biggest change that would occur is that it would do away with the ‘opener’ games. So more starters would have to be on the roster. Also affect pitchers coming back from injuries like Kershaw where they want to limit innings. I think for typical starters, they are probably close to 100 pitches somewhere in 5th inning.
I hope the pre-playoff roster bench is in Kiermaier ,Pages,Kiki, and Barnes. I would DFA Heymard and Ahmed when Muncy and Edman return. Taylor if ready will replace Pages on the playoff roster even though I wouldn’t make that change and leave Taylor off completely.
Edman is a terrific UT guy who, it’s been reported, has long been “coveted” by the Dodger brass. Great glove, good arm, good speed. According to the recent LA Times profile, Brandon Gomes heard of the brewing White Sox-Cards deal, and intervened to make it a three-team deal expressly to get Edman.
Think of him as an upgrade to Taylor and Kike.
While I’m trying to be optimistic about Edman, he’s a roughly league-average hitter whose base-running elevates him to a slightly above-average offensive performer.
So I like the guy but I still wish the Dodgers had landed more of an impact bat like Arozarena or Lane Thomas. With two HRs today, Luis Robert Jr may be shaking his slump–but perhaps the White Sox just made the price too high.
But Keirmaier, of all people, got the big hit today.
With Lux playing so well and Muncy coming back, the Dodgers needed a CF’er to play between Betts and Teo. I think Edman might be the close to perfect missing piece. Hit him 9th and don’t worry about his offense.

Double-A: Right-hander Blake Treinen joined Tulsa on a rehab assignment.
Yamamoto (triceps) threw 17 pitches in his live bullpen session Friday, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports.
“Friday marked the first time Yamamoto has faced live hitters since going on the injured list in June. His session was cut short due to the heat, but he noted afterwards that he felt good. The 25-year-old will have at least two more live sessions before going on a rehab assignment”.
I was glad to read heat was given as an excuse. 27 pitches ain’t much.

Extreme heat seems like a decent excuse to remove a starter after 5 innings of stressful pitching, but 17 pitches in a totally non-stress situation? That sounds a bit like babying to me, unless it’s something else which they don’t want to talk about.

Well Mark might think I am silly, and I respect his opinion, but Shohei Ohtani should not be a leadoff hitter. Not on a team that has Mookie Betts. Ohtani is a .265 hitter in the leadoff spot, Betts, .296. Ohtani’s OBP in the one spot, .368, Betts, ,376. Ohtani strikes out almost a third of the time leading off, Betts, less than 20. Betts walks more frequently, he has stolen 141 bases as a leadoff hitter, and 228 of his career homers have come as a leadoff man. Ohtani’s slug and OPS might be a little better, but he is all slug. In the leadoff spot this year, he is hitting .259. His BA, .314, OBP .387 and K rate are all better in the 2-hole. Sorry but the stats do not support that theory. I’ll take Mookie in the leadoff spot over Shohei any day. Betts hits for a higher BA in the 2 hole, but his OPS drops under .900. Ohtani’s OPS in the 2 hole, 1.008. His BA in the 2 hole, .287, is 22 points higher than leading off in his career. And I do not believe that those comparison stats are silly at all. On the offensively poor Angels it might make sense, but not on the Dodgers.
I agree with you,Bear.I use to think Mookie needed to bat lower in the order but with the team we have had the last couple of years Mookie is a great lead off hitter.A week from now we should be a hitting machine,,,!
Mookie was injured on the 16th of June. They were 44-29, 8 games in front of the second-place team. Ohtani started hitting leadoff the next day against the Rockies. From then till the end of June they went 8-4. The lead dropped to 7.5. In July they were 11-13. This month they are 9-6. They are 28-23 since Ohtani started hitting leadoff, just 5 games over .500. Granted the bad pitching has caused a lot of those losses, but also bad offense and lack of good situational and clutch hitting. Mookie is a catalyst. Ohtani is a slugger. Yeah, he steals bases, but he doesn’t walk enough or just get singles. Mookie does both better and they were a much better team with Betts, Ohtani, Freeman Smith, Hernandez, than they are now. When you score first, you should win games.
Roberts on Glasnow:
“He’s got some elbow tendonitis,” Roberts said. “And this came about after his bullpen and after his ‘pen, I forgot which day it was, he felt good. The next day in catch play, it flared up a little bit so right now it’s tendonitis. We took scans and that’s what came of it. Our expectation is that it’s going to be the two weeks, we back date a few days. When his time is up, he’ll be ready to make the start and we’ll plug him in somewhere.”

I seem to remember that there is either a game or day limit on rehabs.
“Any MLB player can be assigned to any minor league affiliate for the purpose of rehabbing an injury for a maximum of 20 days (non-pitchers) and 30 days (pitchers). The player will still continue to get his MLB salary while on his rehab assignment”.
Taylor will probably be added on Sept 1 when the rosters expand to 28.
I was looking at the 40 man roster and noticed that Kyle Hurt is not on 15 or 60 day IL .
Frasso and Hurt are both on minor league IL thus they are not accumulating major league service time. At this point in time they could be moved to the major league IL as they would not accumulate much time and open 2 roster spots. The issue would be paying double the minimum major league salary as the Dodgers are in the top payroll bracket.

When things go wrong on the mound for Miller, it seems to me he stresses out and can’t handle the situation. It’s more of mental thing than anything physical.

“Fabian Ardaya at The Athletic reported that Casparius would be used out of the bullpen if needed.
Dodgers will have Ben Casparius up tomorrow for length out of the bullpen. Would be his big league debut if he gets in – the 25-year-old right-hander has a 3.48 ERA in 18 starts in Double A and Triple A this season”.
Casparius has control issues. His walk rate is high, but he has a put away slider they really like.
