Who Stays and Who Goes”?

There are thirteen pitchers who love Austin Barnes. He is an “on-the-field-pitching coach.” He is not going anywhere, so get that out of your mind. Hunter Feduccia, who happens to be LH, may or may not be a better hitter, and maybe his arm is slightly better, but he is no Austin Barnes insofar as a receiver. Unless Barnes is injured, he is not going anywhere (did I mention that already?). Quit harping on Barnes! Just stop it… already! Disclaimer: All this goes out the window if Rushing is promoted to AAA.

So, I got that out of the way! That leaves seven more players who could stay or go:

  • Miguel Rojas
  • Chris Taylor
  • Kike Hernandez
  • Gavin Lux
  • Andy Pages
  • Miguel Vargas
  • Jason Heyward

Let’s talk about who could stay or go, but before I get there, let’s not forget James Outman, who could very well come back in the second half of 2024. I am going to rank the order that players who could depart from this roster:

  1. Chris Taylor is a great guy, an awesome teammate, and a solid Dodger. However, his time is up. There is a 96% chance he will be gone.
  2. Andy Pages is the next most likely to be gone. It’s all about whether he can re-adjust. I hope he can, but we have to see. There is a 49% chance he will be gone.
  3. Miguel Vargas is untested, unproven, and untried. They have to give him an opportunity. It’s coming. There is a 40% chance he will be gone.
  4. Kike Hernandez is not likely to be traded, although if the Dodgers could get a good return, then it could be a possibility. I put it at less than 20%.
  5. Gavin Lux could be a part of a trade for a SS, but that seems unlikely dujring the season. There’s less than a 15% chance of that.
  6. Miguel Rojas won’t be traded UNLESS a contending team loses their SS and is willing to overpay. The chance of this happening is less than 10%.
  7. Jason Heyward is on the team unless he just totally tanks and can’t hit at all. The chance of that is less than 5%.

Note: The above highly scientific calculations were done through a process called WAG (Wild Ass Guessing). Chris Taylor is the most likely to go away and I think it should be sooner than later, so that we can see if Andre Lipcuis is for real or an illusion.

Bullpen Arms

Insofar as trading for a closer, there are just four words: It is not happening! Mason Miller will cost a boatloads and is a huge Tommy John Candidate. Andrew Friedman does not operate that way. The bullpen will be fine. Kyle Hurt should be back at some point. Clayton Kershaw will be back and push Stone to the Bullpen. Dustin May will probably be back. Ryan Brasiser will be back as will Brogden and you will need to keep an eye out for River Ryan. Don’t forget about Joe Kelly or the Bazooka. Bobby Miller is nearly ready as is Evan Phillips. Banda looks like he could be very promising and the jury is out on Yohan Ramirez. The Dodgers have a glut of excellent relievers so their is almost no chance they trade for a reliever… especially a significant one as other teams are lineup to overpay.

Throwing RH?
Best news… EVER!

This article has 90 Comments

  1. Two of the runs vs B.Miller scored when a popup in the infield was dropped by a RC defender. His velo was right up there where it should be and had good movement too.
Phillpps looks ready to come back already.
Joendry Vargas went 4-6 with 7rbi yesterday. He will be at RC sooner than later.

    Go Dodgers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. Diego Cartaya was 2-4 with 3 RBI as he brought his average up to .196.

    1. No room on the 40 man roster unless you DFA someone or maker a trade.

  3. “The jury is out on Yohan Ramirez?”

They’ve returned the verdict and he is guilty of being a JAG. His outing on Friday should have resulted in a DFA with someone from MiLB brought up. I’ve seen enough to know he sucks and should never pitch in Dodger Blue again. We’ll see his DFA soon enough.

    1. The Dodgers should offer you a contract if you are able to tell that quickly.

A lot of fans felt that way about Michael Grove after his first 4 outings, but he is coming around. I say the jury is out on Ramirez because his pitches move like crazy. It’s hard to teach that.

The Athletic had a good article on this very subject:

When the Dodgers acquired Anthony Banda and Yohan Ramírez to fill out the bullpen this week, did they do this because someone on staff had seen something they could fix? What role, if any, do the major-league pitching coaches play in evaluating such players before their acquisition? What adjustments did the Dodgers have Banda and Ramírez make? Was it simply pitch mix? — Debra B.

Some of it is purely a necessity. Teams need arms. Teams go through churn. But they also usually put in claims on pieces they feel can either be replacement-level or they see something untapped there. If the Dodgers skipped the waivers line and put actual cash toward a trade, like they did with Connor Brogdon, Yohan Ramírez and Anthony Banda, that usually means there are multiple teams that at least saw something to tap into.

It can be a matter of tweaking pitch mix. Adding a pitch. Adjusting mechanics, whether to generate more consistent command or make a certain pitch play up better. With Banda, there’s obvious appeal — there are only so many guys, even now, who can touch 97 mph from the left side. With someone like, say, Evan Phillips, the Dodgers engineered an overhaul: mechanical changes to improve his command, emphasizing him throwing his best pitch (a sweeper) more frequently and in optimal spots, and a mentality shift after the pitcher admitted to getting beat down with his struggles with his hometown Orioles.

  4. From The Athletic:

“I think it’s a lack of consistency of approach,” Roberts said. “We’re trying to cover too many parts of the zone, in my opinion, and we’re missing the fastball. I think that’s the crux.”

The fastball numbers track, as the Dodgers aren’t crushing hittable fastballs the way they have in years past.

“I don’t think we’re hitting the fastball very well right now,” Gavin Lux said of a figure repeated in hitter’s meetings this week. “You look at all the advanced stats, it’s no secret.”

That, Roberts said, is more on execution than game plans: “The execution part of it is harder. But having a plan and being consistent, that’s easy. It is. It really is.”

  5. I am going to wag it:
Taylor and a prospect traded to the mutts for Marte
Lux , Barnes , knack, outman, Bruns traded to the jays for Bichette and Jansen
Kike and a prospect traded to the nationals for lane Thomas
    Pages sent down
Vargas , Rojas, Jansen, Heyward bench
    Thomas, marte, teo of
    Bullpen gets healthy
Doc says Muncy back soon. Muncy returns in August.
    Lineup:

Smith c. No more lefty openers
    Freeman 1b
    Bichette ss
    Muncy 3b vs righties
    Teo lf
    Marte rf
    Thomas cf

    Glasnow, Yamamoto, miller, kershaw
Dodgers edge Yankees 4-2 in World Series! Ok dreaming certainly improbable but not impossible.

  6. On the website there is an article saying Ohtani is throwin from 60 feet already.
It would help the Dodgers immensely if Ohtani would be able to play LF later in the season, say September.
Would open up more trade options for the Dodgers . Be it a pure DH or maybe 3b with MM moving to DH.

    Go Dodgers!!!!!!!!!!!!1

      1. I know. By then the Dodgers medical staff should have a pretty good picture if he is able to play the outfield this season or not.

        Go Dodgers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  7. Is there really much buzz about a possible Taylor-for-Marte swap? Or is this just speculation?
    Interesting idea.
In a vacuum, it makes a lot of sense. Marte’s OPS is hovering at a ho-hum .700, but Taylor’s is–yikes–.338.. I wanted the Dodgers to go after Marte a few seasons back.
But if I was running the Dodgers, I’d rather get a younger veteran on the rise than an overpriced 35-year-old in decline.

    1. Just speculation . The money was close and I figured the Mets will probably sell. Just looking for possible trade candidates. AF will probably try to pick up Robles who was dfa.

  8. 1. These sound like changes for change’s sake. Marte will soon be 36. He has been in decline for two years.

    2. Thomas is much younger, but (1) He can’t play CF, and (2) it is going to cost a lot more.

    3. Bichette is worth a shot, as is Jansen, but I think it will take more to get him.

    1. 1. Marte is a risk and not a future player. But, when right he has a huge upside. I would rather give it a try before I just dfa Taylor.
      2. Thomas has played cf and yes it would cost more. But, he mashes lefties.
      3. Never know. But that would be my target.

I don’t think these are just changes to make changes. 3 would definitely make us better now. 1n2 have much higher upside than what we have now. Just looking at who might be available. Of course, u have to have a willing partner.

  9. Very strange! Lineups not posted yet. Will post as soon as available.

  10. Was thinking this morning about baseball. Guess we take for granted being a Dodger fan! Could be a Rockies fan, or a White sox fan, or a Oakland fan. Those fans have absolutely nothing to look forward to! BUT, it’s hard not to be disappointed when the team you love is struggling, especially when expectations are so high! Now it won’t go on much longer so i need to calm down!! Patience is not a virtue among Dodger fans. We all want the best players available on the field. I do feel that the current team has a very weak bench. Agree Mark, Vargas needs a shot to prove he belongs on a major league roster! If he doesn’t produce he needs to relocate! Pages had his opportunity and it may end soon. I personally don’t believe Outman is back intil maybe September call ups. Tyler Oneil is a name to keep in mind. That outfield needs a facelift. And it may not be the Dodgers but Bo Bichette will be someone probably gets moved if Toronto falls out of the race!

    1. Could also be a Braves fan, losing Acuna is tough…..

      Or red Sawks fan.

We are blessed to be Dodger fans.

    2. Patience not a virtue of Dodger fans ? Well, I have not forgotten the lean years between 88 and winning another WS in 2020. Especially the early 90s where very hard to take.
Personally I like the Red Sox way better when you win a WS every 5-8 years and be not that good in between. When all is said and done only the titles that count . At least that is how I see and feel it

      Go Dodgers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      1. Not for me. 162 means a hell of a lot.

Most red sawks season they are done by July.

I’ll take being good every year and getting in the dance….

Oh and don’t forget the Sawks went 86 years without winning a WS….now THATS bad.

        1. I can understand that you and others prefer it that way.
Me, I would trade the Red Sox seasons since 2000 with our seasons in a heartbeat. 4 WS titles to our 1.
Especially when it is so hard to win it all under the new playoff format.

          Go Dodgers!!!!!!!!!!

          1. So, you prefer to be miserable for 5 years to be happy on Year 6?

            Not me!

    1. The Dodgers recalled Nick Ramirez from Triple-A Oklahoma City on Tuesday, Eric Stephen of SBNation.com reports.

Ramirez will serve as the 27th man for the Dodgers during their doubleheader against the Mets. The left-handed reliever has permitted four runs with a 3:5 K:BB over 9.1 innings during his time in the majors this season.

      1. I guess Vargas will be working with RVS on the sidelines during the game. Yeah, there they will find out if he can hit at this level.

        Go Dodgers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

        1. There is no one who has been more of a proponent of Miguel Vargas than myself, but I have been around these guys enough to trust that there is a good reason why he has been sitting. We may find out today and I would hope that he plays game 2.

  12. Mark are by positive Vargas is not at 41 percent instead of 40 at being gone? And I’m gonna have to disagree on Heyward, I think he’s 6 percent

  13. First of all dodgerram, today’s double header will most likely see all 13 position players start so your sarcasm is not really warranted. I respect your wanting the Red Sox record as opposed to ours over the past 23 seasons. I just happen to disagree. I would rather be happy for six months and disappointed for a few weeks if that is the trade off. I would also rather always have a shot at being in the dance as opposed to not.

However, your level of criticism and suggestions is unbelievably high while the team is winning over 100 games. I can’t imagine what it would be like during the 19 seasons the Red Sox weren’t winning the WS when we would win 15-25 less games.

      1. Living threw the years from 88 to 2020 I would have already turned into one.
        😉

        Go Dodgers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    1. As I said above, JayB: To each his own. I just know how happy the 2020 WS win made me not only threw our postseason run but all offseason too. Regular season has lost a lot of its luster since the new playoff format was installed and with it the meaning of a 100 plus wins regular season.
My sarcasm regarding Vargas was not only in light of todays double header. Since he was called up he has 7 ab. No way enough if you really want to find out about him.

      Go Dodgers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

      1. Vargas is resting for the first game because being in the starting lineup for yesterday’s rainout really tired him out and Dave told him to sleep in today.

  14. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Tuesday that Phillips (hamstring) is on track for activation from the 15-day injured list Friday, David Vassegh of AM 570 LA Sports reports.

Phillips struck out two batters in a perfect inning in his first rehab appearance with Single-A Rancho Cucamonga on Sunday. He’s slated for one rehab outing before rejoining the Dodgers for their weekend series at home against the Rockies, assuming all goes well. Upon activation, Phillips should immediately step back in as the Dodgers’ closer.

  15. Who stays and who goes. Hmmm. I have always liked Chris Taylor, but I have also felt when he and Kike are both on the roster that they cancel each other out. They are similar redundant pieces. The Dodgers value their versatility highly. But both are over 30 now, neither have ever been high contact hitters. Kike hasn’t had but one season over .230 since he hit .256 in 2018. He also hit 21 homers that year. He hit 20 for Boston in 2021. Taylor actually has a higher career BA than Kike, .250 to .238. Kike has 7 more career homers than Taylor. But Chris is 33, he has had several nagging injuries that have plagued him over the last few years, and his strikeout to walk ratio is pathetic. He has struck out 700 more times in his career than he has walked. Neither has shown much in the speed department the last few years. Kike has never been a base stealing threat. Taylor usually is in double-figures. But I believe the time has come for him to move on. I know they would have to eat a lot of money, but he is bringing nothing to the offense, and is not playing enough to contribute on defense. He is just wasting a roster spot that could go to a more productive player. I also believe that unlike a lot of teams, the Dodgers seem to hold their prospects back more. It has been a while since a rookie has cracked the roster and made an impact. I also believe MLB worked hard to get rid of Hernandez.

    1. This team needs two more competent bats with high OBP to compliment our sluggers.
One of those bats should come from one out of Pages/Vargas/Outman , the second bat realistially via a trade.
The current 13 hitters will not do it unless several of them all of a sudden reverse their respective career paths and become better/different hitters (CT3, Kike, Barnes, Rojas)

      Go Dodgers!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      1. Pages did get a couple of hits today, and Vargas had a homer. Outman had an ofer at OKC with 2 K’s and a walk. He is hitting .273 down there. Ward hit his 13th homer. They might have to get two via trade. Kike, Barnes, Taylor, all well below .200 and Lux barely hanging around there. They really miss Muncy.

  16. Occasional Austin Barnes start in place of Will Smith is not an issue in a lineup that is functional in 7 or 8 spots. Plus, all indications are that Barnes is not going anywhere. As for rest of the list, no real arguments. I am sure that Dodgers did not think that the entire group of 7 would struggle this way. I thought Roberts’ comments were more pointed than they had been regarding this group. Basically, this is what we have and they need to be better.
Don’t get the clamoring for Mason Miller. Reminds me of the proposals for David Bednar last
year. Would not waste assets on relief help right now with glaring needs at bottom of the order. Plus the Dodgers have a lot of arms to choose from in constructing a pen. Let that play out over time.

    1. The Dodgers are making every pitcher they face look like Maddux. Fundamentally incompetent. Hernandez leads off an inning with a double and with no outs they failed to move him to third.

Lux weakly flies out to LF, predictably CK3 strikes out and Heyward grounds out.

Been saying it for years, RVS needs to be fired.

    2. RVS doesn’t fix hitters. He changes their approach, lift and drive is his motto. But I would rather see a coach who taught hitters to make contact more often.

  17. So I’m up at 5:30 a.m. h(re in Hong Kong and see the Dodgers are trailing 2-0 in the middle of the 7th.
    Ugh.
Chris Taylor just struck out for the third time in three ABs, lowering his BA to .097. This after it had been reported that Vargas would be in the lineup, not Taylor. So what’s up with that? Beats me.
At least there’s some good news: MLB has apparently relented on the copyright control it was starting to enforce on baseball YouTubers like Pitching Ninja and Fuzzy who repurpose baseball highlights. Fuzzy credits a backlash from fans for helping MLB see the light: the YouTubers help expand the appeal of MLB’s product. It’s certainly a benefit for fans like me who live overseas.

  18. And now Taylor comes up in the 9th, with Teoscar and Lux on base, and a chance to be a hero…..
    And he delivers!
Not exactly a screaming line drive, but Taylor puts it in play and ties the score!
Then Heyward strikes out and now Pages has his chance to be a hero….
…and grounds into a double play.

    1. Just saw the highlight…
      A bunt!
      Way to go, CT3.
Still wondering why he got the start and not Vargas….

      1. Lefty starting the second game, so Roberts wanted him to hit off of a lefty, and not a guy who throws 95 plus fastballs.

  19. Finally we play some small ball with CT3 laying down a good bunt, we score the tying run and instead of bunting again with Heyward moving the runners to 2nd and 3rd he strikes out and Pages hits into a twin killing.
That is just so stupid from a managerial standpoint it is beyond believe. Dodgers and Roberts never seem to learn their lessons.

    Go Dodgers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      1. Another terrible at bat that somehow turned in our favor. The dam has broken, thanks to#1 and 3!

    1. Bunting is really stupid! I can’t say it enough.

Back in the day… yeah… with 89 MPH fastballs. \

Now, you have to be a dumbass!

        1. I can supply the statistics, but it makes no sense most of the time.

All people remember is the successful one, not the 100 that failed.

          1. When you are in such a horrible collective offensive slump as the Dodgers are you have to roll the dice . Especially with the bottom of your lineup who basically is doing nothing.
Have to be unconventional sometimes. Put the ball in play and good things usually happen. At this stage I rather see a bunt by CT3 then have him swing away. Same for Kike , Barnes etc.

            Go Dodgers!!!!!!!!!!!!!

          2. I don’t know if the bunt was a wise play or not, but Taylor already had 3 Ks against him.
Ottavino nearly caught it, which would have been a disaster. Instead the ball ticks off his glove to bring in a run and enable Taylor to reach first.
            Game of millimeters.

  20. Whew. Hudson does a high-wire act to push the game into extras.
Mookie, Shohei, Freddie coming up, with Pages placed at 2B.
Mets will start with the 8th and 9th hitters in their half.
    Advantage Dodgers. Right?
    Right?

  21. Is this the day the ship was righted?

Will Daniel Hudson pitch the 10th?

    1. Lets hope that was the game that turns it around for the Dodgers. From a psychological standpoint this game could not have gone better for them.
1 am here in Germany, time to go to bed. Will watch the 2nd game of the DH tomorrow on MLB TV. Good night everybody.

      Go Dodgers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    2. So Mookie and Freddie deliver big time.
And then Treinen quickly shuts the Mets down. Nice.
And it’s especially nice to break the skid with a gritty come-from-behind win. More meaningful than a boring blow out. While Shohei took the collar, perhaps Freddie is starting to get hot.
And maybe, just maybe, Taylor’s big bunt will alter his bad mojo.
Perhaps I missed something. Did Vargas come down with food poisoning or something? Why did Taylor get the start after Vargas had been announced?
Hmm…. Did AF just want to show the Mets that Taylor is healthy and should perhaps replace Marte on their roster?

  22. Dodgers could improve with trades fur these players both hitting wise and d fielding wise rather tgen stick with what they have these players would help in trades.

All these players the Dodgers could get and trade some prospects to get these guys which would be better consistent hitters then what they have or have in the minors. And make this team better who is sick of the 7,8,9, hitters all striking out. Well I am.

      1. “If the frog had wings when he jumped, he wouldn’t have bumped his bottom when he landed.”

That was my dad’s favorite, haha.

      2. Well you really think mark keeping the guys they have will win a World Series no you can’t have your 7,8,,9 batter strikeout in a row it just kills rallys. Vargas if he was good he be playing Pages is slumping Taylor oh my three strikeouts tonite he had to bunt tonite to get a run in. And Kiki and Barnes the look like thry go up there scared dont have a clue. And outman oh my same strikeouts. Give me marte thomas bichette and and Miller from the As improves the team.

    1. Bradley, they are not going to trade for a SS. So, you can forget Bichette. And the reason is simple. Mookie moved once this year; he does not want to move again. That is why he has been playing SS exclusively. Arenado still has a huge contract; they are not going to trade for a third baseman as long as Muncy is on the team. Muncy at this point in the season, even though he has missed a couple of weeks, has more homers, 9-3 than Arenado, more RBIs, 28-23 and a higher OPS by 120 points. Diaz is not the A’s SS. He is not even on the A’s. Rooker, Ward, Bader are all good choices, they are at least hitting. Adames is a rental and a SS, so LA is not trading for him. Yelich would be ok, but he also has a lot of money owed to him. Marte is 36 and on the downside, Thomas has been injured and is hitting below .200. Springer is almost 35 and hitting only .196. Why would they want him? Connor Joe is a utility player and 31 years old. He is basically Kike and Taylor. So, unless they got rid of one or both of those guys, he has no place on this team. One Connor I would like to see them trade for would be Connor Wong of the Red Sox. He is their backup catcher and is hitting over .300. I would also look at the Red Sox outfielder, Tyler O’Neill. Low average right now but hitting for power. 11 homers. I suggest that before you suggest a player to trade for, you go to their baseball reference page and see their stats. It would help in making suggestions based on fact instead of tossing names out there who have little or no chance of being traded. Their length of contract and how much money they are owed is there for all to see. LA is not going to trade for older players with deals in excess of 100 million or close to that number. Arenado- The portion of his salary this year and the remaining money on his deal, close to 100 million. Plus, he is 33 years old. Yelich has 104 million left on his deal which runs until he is 37. You have to factor all of this in when you are talking about trades. There is also the fact that most analysists believe the Dodgers will make a play for Roki Sasaki if he is posted this winter. They would need money for that.

      1. Arnaldo and Yelich and Addames wouldn’t be good to get they all want out where they are and are being wastes on sucky teams. Funny you say bichette no way why on baseball tonite then they talked trades said bichette lane thomas and Miller to the dodgers why would they say that and you say no way.

    1. In time, Vargas will learn how to “control” the strike zone in his AB’s like veteran hitters do. ..then WATCH OUT!

  25. Why would any pitcher throw anything other than a down and away slider to T. Hernandez?

    1. In 2023 T. Hernandez saw more sliders than any player in baseball history! Literally.

  26. Kaboom! Two game winning streak! If the playoffs began tomorrow, Stone would be one of my starters.

  27. Ahhhh.
    Nice way to reverse course.
Best thing about today’s sweep: First, the gritty, clutch team effort to come from behind in the opener. Big moments for Taylor, Mookie, Freddie–and Hudson and Treinin in relief. G
Second best: Gavin Stone pitching like an ace. Seven shutout innings, with 7 Ks while allowing zero walks and only three hits, all singles.
Third best: Bronze for Freddie breaking out by going 5 for 8 on the day, with a big HR, a double and three singles.
Honorable mentions to Vesia with the two-inning save, and Vargas and Smith for the HRs.

  28. Gritty gut check day for the Dodgers, they needed that big time. They will be just fine. Looong season ahead. Ya know it’s the Damdest thing. Whenever we win all the haters have swallowed their keyboards, yet string a bad stretch together and it’s let’s get that Fire Dave Roberts site going up. I’m guessing there’s no takers tonight, but stay tuned. Next loss they’ll come crawling back out.
