Is Tommy Pham Coming?

The Tommy Pham rumor is gaining teeth. Tommy admitted that he wanted to come to LA last season, but it never worked out. It didn’t work out because the Dodgers were not committed to playing Mookie Betts full-time at 2B. They are now! Jason Heyward is the only right fielder they really have. Manual Margot is better situated for CF, so Tommy Pham would be a great platoon partner with Heyward.

Pham did not have a great year last season, and his splits against LHP were not in line with his career splits against Lefties, which are:

  • .271 BA
  • .381 OB%
  • .453 SLG
  • .834 OPS

Pham will be 36 this season, and this may be his last hurrah! He has never been an All-Star and has never won a Championship. He would likely sign a team-friendly contract to play with the Dodgers. In fact, I hear he has reached out… again. I like players who want to be Dodgers. Pham is also a throwback in that he has the intensity of a Kirk Gibson, the toughness of Gibson, and the focus of Gibson.

He knows that he is near the end of his career and he also knows that he could be just the player the Dodgers need to win it all. Fox Sports wrote this during the World Series last October:

But over the past five years, he has become a mercenary, often traded from doormat to contender to crush left-handed pitching and provide an unrelenting flavor of ferocity. Years have dwindled the quick twitch. He’s no longer a speedster, or even a defensively productive outfielder. But while aging has robbed his body of the power and athleticism that enabled his ascension, Pham’s focus and determination are as sharp as ever.

The Dodgers need him to mash LHP, and he likely would get less than 350 Plate Appearances, but his field and lockerroom presence could be as valuable as Gibby. Tommy has an “edge” – Gibby gave them that edge. Tommy can, too. Sometimes, teams and players are made for each other. Tommy Pham and the Dodgers time is now! One year for $8 Million with a mutual option.

    1. If he really wants to be in LA just work puny an agreement to sign after Gonsolin and May can be moved to the 60 day IL that way no one has to go.

In 120 post season PA, Pham is hitting .313/.333/.513/.846. Don’t blame Pham for the D-backs loss in the WS. In 21 PA, he slashed .421/.429/.737/1.165. If the only thing that matters is October I think Pham is who I want in left

I got the stats from another site and apparently the only one Pham had issues with was Joc.

  1. Does Tommy Pham’s “fire” work all year long? Or is it better when it’s 2nd half of the year and teams are going all out to get to the playoffs?

Just asking, as I don’t know the guy or his reputation.

    1. He defined himself when he slapped Joc Pederson.

“Pham slapped Pederson because of a dispute that stemmed from a fantasy football league in which both were involved.

In short, Pham believed that Pederson violated the rules of their league by stashing a player on Injured Reserve. Pederson thought he was within his rights to make the move he made and noted that Pham had made a similar one earlier in the season.

Additionally, Pham was not happy with some comments that Pederson made in their league’s group text. Notably, Pederson — then with the Dodgers — poked fun at the Padres amid a losing stretch during their season, and that irked Pham, who played for San Diego in 2020 and 2021.”

  2. I must admit I haven’t seen Teoscar Hernandez play as much as I have Tommy Pham but I’d be fine with Pham, from what I have seen it seems like he has game and would be a solid addition. Pham as a player resembles Starling Marte a lot IMO.

      1. Win and they’re in! How can the Dodger organization make all this noise about Vargas and then sign an average player to take his spot?

          1. It’s not AF’s modus operandi, Bear.

He doesn’t really go for non-Superstars unless they come at great value.

It’s too early in free agency for Pham to sign a below-market deal.

I say there’s a 1% chance of signing Pham anytime in the near future.

  3. I said Bauer never toed the company line; I said nothing about telling the truth. I know what Bull Durham is based on, makes no difference, it is still all Hollywood. I do not have an agenda thank you very much, I just state an opinion. Some agree, some do not. Mark has never given me direction or how I should respond to any post, but of your opinion on these matters I can definitely say you are full of shit because none of what you have said has any truth to it.

  4. By the way, I do not get paid a dime to do this. I do it because I love the game and I love the team. No one tells me what to say. I have no filters put on me. Mark runs the site, but he never tells me what to write or not write. You have your beliefs, and I have mine. We disagree. That is perfectly fine.

  5. There is a fundamental difference between one player, who gets upset at childish pranks when his temperament is aligned more towards intensity, seriousness and a desire to win, and another player who gets upset and physically assaults somebody because he lost at fantasy football. One is a fierce competitor. the other a baby.

Why is Pham even a consideration? No.

He’s terrible defensively. He hasn’t had a good offensive year since 2019. He doesn’t really even hit lefties all that well, which negates his worth as a right handed bat … and he’s a numbskull. He was even too much of an idiot for the Padres.

AF has been pretty good about selecting for emotional maturity (rare swing and a miss with Bauer). I see about a snowball’s chance in hell of this happening.

And if Pham comes, it’s bye bye Miguelito. No room for Vargas on the roster.

If this came from Dodgers Nation … I can’t watch those guys anymore. It’s like if Bradley had his own Dodgers YouTube channel.

  6. If the Dodgers are going for a FA LF, I think Duvall would be a better choice. Much better defensively than Pham and can play each OF position plus some 1B. Pham seems like a thug and no organization keeps him around very long. I would prefer to see Vargas given an opportunity to start the season with the Dodgers instead of either Duvall or Pham. Give Miguelito a chance until the TD when several more options for a RH LF will be available.

    1. Rookie. Taylor was on the bench.

Oh well, they overachieved. They were picked to win 4-6 games and we lost our QB and still won 9 games, but I’ll take it.

  7. How on God’s green earth can you say I put words in Jorge’s mouth? I never said that.

This is becoming too annoying. I have better things to do than argue with morons on a board.
