Beat the Team in the Clown Suits!

Jim Bowden, you know, the former failed GM of the Reds who is now a talk show host on MLB and a writer for The Athletic, went on record with this about the trade that brought Amed Rosario to the Dodgers:

The Dodgers trading righty Noah Syndergaard and his 7.16 ERA (at the time of the trade) to the Guardians for below-average defensive shortstop Amed Rosario and his 0.1 bWAR. The two teams made the money even. No need for Ambien with this trade. Yawn. Meh.”

— Failed GM, Jim Bowden

I guess we now know for a certainty why Bowden failed as a GM: He’s a moron! Getting rid of Noah Syndergaard (who was one of Friedman’s mistakes) for any breathing stiff was a major accomplishment! However, getting back a player like Rosario, who is a lefty-killer, is priceless! You usually can’t call a trade this early, but I believe the Dodgers are already the winners of the Thor-Amed Trade, and this helps us understand why Bowden sometimes spews such lunacy. Maybe he is off his meds… but I digress!

Amed Rosario, who is primarily a SS (and not a very good one at that), has looked stellar at SS and 2B, and in his 21 ABs with the Dodgers (a very short sample), he has seven hits, two doubles, and 7 RBI. If he doesn’t get a hit the rest of the season, the Dodgers won the trade!

I have no illusions that Amed will suddenly become a Gold Glove SS, but he is an interesting piece in that he hits over .300 against LHP and is a nice platoon partner at 2B or even LF. He has performed flawlessly at SS as well. He is 6′ 2″ and close to 200 pounds, so it is possible that Robert Van Socyoc and Company re-vamp his swing to become a more powerful one (i.e., more HRs) as he did with JDM. That’s what they are trying to do. He will be a free agent after this season, but I doubt the makeover will be complete in two months.

James Outman had a great game last night, bringing his third HR back into the ballpark and then hitting his own shortly thereafter! Someone is going to get all bent out of shape when I say he is not a great defensive Centerfielder, but he is not… yet! However, his athleticism makes up for his route shortcomings and other defensive shortcomings. He will get better and is (in fact) doing that. His batting average is up to .252, and his OPS is pushing .800. His .352 OB% is solid, but his 32% K -Rate is troublesome – especially for a player with a relatively compact swing. It’s not like he is swinging from the heels with every swing. He has a short, compact, powerful swing, which is a little bit “funky,” but that is fine. If in his second season, he can cut down those strikeouts by just 20%, he should be an All-Star!

The Dodgers bullpen continues to shine. Since June 20th, they have been the best in baseball. The bullpen, rated at #29, is now up to #18 on the year. They may make the Top Ten, but what is more important is how you finish. The problems with starting pitching will evaporate over the next 30 days as Kershaw, Pepiot, Striker Buehler, and others try and return.

The Giants are now three games back, and the D-Bags, who are sinking like the Titanic, are 7.5 games behind and falling! It should not be lost on anyone that the Dodgers have the best offense in the NL and are just a few runs behind the MLB leader in runs scored. This is the most powerful offense EVER in Los Angeles, and yet all many fans talk about is how bad Barnes is and how they need another RH bat. Are you crazy? Come on, Man!

Last night, the Padres bullpen let them down as they blew up! Robert Suarez, who is back from injury, gave up 5 ER in his .2 IP, and then the player so many Dodger fans wanted, Scott Barlow, threw more gasoline on the fire, giving up 3 three more earned runs.

The OKC Story

Gavin Stone seems to have found his mojo. Last night, he threw six innings of no-hit ball. He walked two and fanned ten while throwing 85 pitches. He is back on the Dodgers radar! His teammates at AAA, who are also on the 40-man roster, namely Michael Busch and Miguel Vargas, also performed well. Busch led off and was 3-5, while Vargas batted second and was 2-5 with two runs scored. They are playing 3B and 2B, respectively, and that should not be lost on anyone. We could see all three players again before the season is over.

I would never say that any player is “untouchable” via trade, but Stone, Sheehan, Busch, and Vargas are all close! The Dodgers have big plans for them all. This is one of the best times to be a Dodger fan… ever! Enjoy the ride. Ditch the bitch!

  1. Hopes are we will win it all this year, but if we don’t AF did not trade away key prospects and he will have a roster in 2024 that he can work with and have the necessary dollars to do so. The key prospects have spent time on the MLB roster in 2023 and are gaining more experience at Oklahoma City right now. The future is extremely bright.

  2. White Sox Acquire Two Minor League Pitchers From Dodgers
By Anthony Franco | August 4, 2023 at 10:29pm CDT

The White Sox announced they’ve acquired right-handers Aldrín Batista and Máximo Martínez from the Dodgers in exchange for international signing bonus space. Both were eligible to be traded because they haven’t been on the 40-man roster at any point this season.

Both pitchers are low-level arms with no major league experience. They’d each been in the Arizona Complex League. Batista, 20, has a 3.46 ERA while striking out just under a third of opponents in 39 innings. Martínez, 19, has a 4.73 ERA with a 23.3% strikeout rate over 26 2/3 frames.

    1. I haven’t heard how much slot money the Dodgers got back, but it has to be at least $500,000 because they are allotted in blocks of $250,000 x 2 = $500,000. 5 out of 4 people struggle with math!

      1. Does the money go towards this year’s signings or next year’s international signings?

  3. I’ll try not to be rude to that team of bitches, but… who’s worried now? not me, never!

  4. Big come from behind victory. Bobby Miller showed he can work out of trouble but he has to learn to put hitters away when he has them on the ropes. It is a learning thing every game but kid has just ace stuff.

Good to see Stone rebound with a great outing.
Wilman Diaz since his promotion to RC is raking. Good to see him find his stroke after a difficult start to his pro career.
Who is going to start today ? Grove or Yarbrough ?

    Go Dodgers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    1. I bet it’s Yarbrough! Grove will be optioned once Kershaw is activated next week.

      1. Grove makes a better long man at this stage of his career.
Yes, he probably is the odd man out when Kersh returns.

        Go Dodgers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  5. Great team win, everyone contributing. Got ‘em on, got ‘em over, got ‘em in! Good ab w/ risp! Bring on the Bravos! New guys doing well, best the team has looked. Kudos to AF.

  6. Walker Buehler threw a bullpen session on Friday at Titleist Performance Institute in San Diego, complete with motion-capture technology to see where he’s at in his return from Tommy John surgery and flexor tendon repair last August.

Buehler said back in May that he is planning for a return to the Dodgers rotation by September 1, which was seen as aggressive at the time.

Dodgers assistant pitching coach Connor McGuiness was with Buehler Friday, then talked to Bill Plunkett at the Orange County Register about the bullpen session and the timeline for Buehler’s return:

“For him actually? Who knows. We’ll see,” McGuiness said when asked if Sept. 1 is a realistic target. “You never want to guarantee a date or anything like that, because who knows? Anything could potentially happen as he goes through it. I think it’s one of those things where if he passes all the proper tests, and our group, with the resources we have, feel good about it, we’ll be ready to rock and roll.”

If the next step for Buehler is facing hitters, that could come as early as next week at Camelback Ranch. He mentioned on his weekly appearance on the Just Baseball podcast on Monday that August 8 was a possibility for him to pitch to hitters.

    1. To wake up to 10-5! Went to bed down 3-1. Bowden wasn’t the only one poo pooing Rosario. Our writers here at LADT weren’t impressed with him either. Mirror Mark. Love Miller and his stuff and his battle. Reminds me of Buehler. The kids gonna be special. Gotta keep him in the rotation even when Buehler and Kersh return. Good on Stone, Vargas and Busch to bounce back.

      1. Oh and love “ditch the bitch.” DTB! At his current pace Outman could be back in the ROY conversation by the end of Aug. If he can cut down on his K’s, he’s gonna be special.

    1. Had surgery July 17th but I saw no update how it went.
With his second big elbow operation in 3 years we have th have our fingers crossed for the kid. Maybe the Dodgers have to think about moving him to closer to lessen the stress on his arm. Gagne 2.0 ?

      Go Dodgers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      1. Thank you for the update. I agree that his days as a starter may have to be well thought out by the front office.

      2. 100% agree…that should be definitely something that should be seriously talked about now- limit him to one inning only. I can see him being Beasty In that roll too.

  7. Nice win. Always love it when they shut the ever obnoxious and annoying “Beat LA” chant up. Padre fans still gloat about beating LA in the playoffs last season, but forget we swept them out of the NLDS in 2020. Will Smith had 5 hits in that game three rout. I will be the first to admit I was wrong about Rosario. But my main concern was his defense, not his bat. He has made a lot of errors as a SS this year. So, he is not the defender Rojas is. But he made a fine play at second last night while sitting on his arse. The only Dodger offensive player outside of call-ups without a homer this year is Austin Barnes.

  8. Because of Joendry Vargas I have been following the DSL in recent weeks a little more than usual.
In addition to Vargas who is having a very, very good first season at age 17 there are a couple more position players who are having excellent seasons so far.
C Angel Diaz is hitting .417 with 6 Hrs and fleet footed CF Eduardo Quintero is hitting .370 with 5 Hr and 17 sb .
On the pitching side 17 year old Jesus Tillero is intriguing. 6-0 , 190 frame and already reaching 97 mph. Whip 0.83 in 19 innings, 22 SOs.
Very likely We will see him along with Vargas and Diaz and Quintero at RC next season .

    Go Dodgers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  9. Apparently Walker Buehler had a great workout yesterday and threw the ball very well.
With Pepiot, Kershaw and company returning, the Dodgers pitching headed into the fall should be very solid.

No question, Outman continues to impress, both on offense and defense. I really like Vargas at second, Lux at short and Busch at third next year. The rotation looks good too with Miller, Sheehan, Buehler, Stone and Pepiot, hopefully Kershaw and the pipe dream Ohtani.

Before Mark mentions Koop-Aid, I wish to point out that in California we have strawberry fields and great Mexican restaurants, so the drink of choice is strawberry margaritas.

Although Friedman blew it with Thor, he did well signing Peralta and Heyward. Can’t nail every signing.

An earlier story indicated the Padres may be on the verge of struggling with weight of the payroll. Will they take step back this winter and trade away some of their big contracts?

    1. Dream rotation for 24:
Ohtani, Clayton, Miller, Buehler plus one out of Tony Gonsolin/ Stone/Sheehan/Pepiot/
If we can not get Ohtani than try to resign Julio.

      Go Dodgers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  10. Good article Mark.
Great team win last night. Big contributions by Outman, Rosario, and the key hit of the game from Peralta!
Not sure who pitches tonight against Snell, maybe the new Dodger Yarbrough, but great to start the series with a win.

  11. Loved the Joe Kelly/Tatis at bat last night. Classic. After he struck him out you could read Joe’s lips “F__ing Bitch”!!

  12. There is a ton of payroll coming off of the books this winter. I think the team will have a decidedly younger look next season. They might re-sign Kersh if he wants to stay, but I am at this point, not so sure they keep some of the other free agents. Freeman and Betts will be the vets. Muncy will be there if they decide he is going to be the full time DH. I think they go young all around the infield with Vargas at second, Lux at SS, and Busch as the new third baseman. I have a strong feeling that Urias is gone. I just believe someone else, maybe even the Padres, is going to offer him a huge deal. Considering his age, he will take the most money. I think Deluca will get a serious look in spring training. It they decide to trade Taylor, more likely with less time left on his deal, they could always bring Kike back to be the Swiss army knife type player. Betts, Outman and Deluca are a pretty good defensive outfield. Some speed out there too. Smith will for next year at least, be the primary catcher, and unless something really dramatic takes place, Barnsie will be his backup. Rosario will get some consideration since he can play outfield and infield. But they are pretty much stuck with Rojas for at least next season. The rotation will be younger. The thing with pitching staffs is the moves over the winter change the face of the bullpen and sometimes the starting rotation. It will be very interesting to see who AF targets for the pen this winter. They might re-sign Heyward. I think he has a better chance of being retained than Peralta. His connection with Freeman is pretty strong. Contrary to what some might think, I seriously doubt they trade for a catcher to replace Smith as the starter to move him to another position next season. They have too many good catching prospects to go and block their progress. Both Pages and Cartaya are going to have to show much better results in the minors next season before anyone even considers them as MLB ready. Pages coming off of an injurie and Cartaya with a really bad offensive season. E. Rodriguez wanted a contract extension to approve the trade. Glad it was nixed. Old pal Charlie Culberson re-signed with the Braves on a minor league deal after being cut by the team.

      1. I would be down with that. Snell is a little older, but what he is really is a K machine. 156 K’s in 119 innings. And think what pitching in Dodger Stadium would do for him. And he will cost less.

        1. I’m not sure that Lux will be the ss next year. If he is it might be as a platoon with Rojas. Acuna took a year and a half to get back to what he said was normal after his knee surgery. I would not be surprised to see Freeman at first Lux at 2B Mookie at SS and Busch at 3B. With an outfield of Vargas, Outman and a platoon of DeLuca and Heyward. I also would not be surprised to see Lynn’s option picked up if he finishes the season strong.

  13. Alex Reyes? The Dodgers are paying him 1.1 mil this year with a 3 mil club option for 24. Former elite prospect who has had his career derailed by injuries. He hasn’t pitched since 2021. Didn’t even realize he was under contract for the Dodgers. I doubt the Dodgers exercise that option. That’s 3 mil saved.

Based on the current Dodgers under contract and arb values, the Dodgers will be 137 million under the competitive balance threshold in 2024. That’s 137 mil in money to play with.

    How would you spend it?

    1. I was intrigued by the Alex Reyes signing. Reyes was non-tendered by the St. Louis Cardinals at the start of the offseason after missing the entire 2022 campaign after undergoing right shoulder surgery in May.

Prior to having his throwing shoulder operated on last year, Reyes had a torn tendon in his latissimus dorsi muscle repaired in 2018, and later underwent Tommy John surgery during 2019 Spring Training. He also missed time the following season due to right shoulder trouble. He was expected back in July or August, but he had to undergo another surgery on his right shoulder in Early June.

While they are not saying much about the surgery, they did say it was not the previously repaired labrum but rather a different part of his shoulder. The guy throws smoke and is still only 28 years old. I suppose that whether the Dodgers exercise his option for 2024 likely depends upon what DR. Al Attrache says. You can’t ignore that talent, but will he be forever injured? I have no clue.

    2. With all that money I would start with Ohtani and then use the rest on Julio or Snell to round out our starting rotation.
Rest of the money to round out the lineup, pen and bench plus a new 1 year deal for CK.

      Go Dodgers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    3. I think Reyes’ option will be exercised. I believe history is the Dodgers sign such players for the 2nd year, with the first year understood to be rehabbing.

      1. They also have options on Hudson and Trienen for 2024. Not sure if they exercise either one.

  14. * Fun game. The our “new guys” are making a big impact. Especially with their energy.
    * I think this game was very well managed by Doc. The score indicates a blow out but it wasn’t for 7 innings. I thought his moves were terrific last night.
    * When he turns to Vesia and Fergie, it would be nice if they didn’t start with walks and hitting guys, especially with a 4 run lead. Throw quality fastballs. Seriously, don’t trick anybody. Don’t get behind in counts. It’s going to take lots of contact to catch up but the free runners are inexcusable.
    * The Padres throw us a ton of inside breaking balls inside. Freddie finally took one.
3 other times we quickly got out of the way. I could hear my high school kids hollering, “you gotta wear that”. Especially when the bases were loaded. Some pro hitters would have certainly done that, but it’s a big ask, even on an 84 mph breaking ball. It’s a long season and those bruises add up. Personally, I’d take the dot.
    * I would wear those SD uniforms to a shit-fight so I wouldn’t wreck my good clothes.
It’s so satisfying to kick their arrogant asses. Bush-league hot-dogs.

    1. Nice ! My sentiments exactly. I keep wanting to adjust the color on my TV when they wear those awful things. Best city connect uni in my estimation, both from Chicago teams. Cubs Wrigleyville unis and White Sox Southside uni’s Pads, Snakes and Giants up there also with the worst.

      1. Video on Twitter of some Padre fan all upset at Dodger fans sitting in the same section. Looks like he is trying to start a fight. Figures, can’t beat em on the field, try whipping their fans.

  15. I am smiling so big today.

I woke up this morning and with one eye, looked at the scoreboard from last night. Needless to say, joy was on my face and in my heart. As many of you know, I went on record not trusting the kid, Miller, in this big game on the road, and even went on record saying he would give up 3 runs in the 1st inning. But thanks to Outman taking a HR away from Tatis, he got out of it with no runs. There were a ton of base runners in his 3+ innings, but fortunately, not many runs.

Why else am I so happy today?

Stone pitched 6 innings of no hit ball last night. Get out!!!! Please, please, please Mr Stone….do what you did last night every time you pitch. Whatever you changed, keep doing it and don’t forget it.

    Why else am I happy?

JDM is back!!!! Buehler might be back!!! Clayton is close to being back!!! Kike is back!!! And who in the heck is this Rosario kid?

Today….it’s all good! Thanks especially to Mark and NewBear for all you do here.

  16. I know, I need to stop sugar-coating my feelings about those clowns.
On another note, I enjoyed Kirsten’s interview with Peralta above. I was not a fan when she started. I like Alana and Kirsten mumbled through comments and talked down her shirt.
I must say that she has improved so much and now does a nice job with the role she’s ask to do. Nice to see improvement in anybody’s career.
Mark, how did your procedure go?

  17. Thanks, Mark. I enjoyed your article today. But what really caught my eye was the title of the article. I’ve been trying to describe those padre uniforms without offending anyone. I think “clown suits” is perfect…………um, or do you think that offends clowns? 🙂

I was watching the game last night and for seven innings I was waiting for the Dodgers to have one of their “crooked number” innings. Well it happened big time. 8 runs Off their bullpen in 2 innings – fantastic! It sure made it worth staying awake until after 1:00 AM. Let’s hope the team can do it again tonight.

  18. Put lipstick on a pig , you still have a pig! Put padres win any uniforms and you still have losers! Tonight. Could be a tough one. Snell has always been good. Against dodgers. Starting to get a little excited about Walker! He could be X factor in playoffs. I’m worried Bobby Miller won’t be what we need in playoffs. Has been great , but outings are getting shorter and shorter. Clayton, Walker,Julio! If right that’s a damn big three for playoffs. Get another one tonight dodgers!

    1. Bobby still learning on the fly.
How he got out of that 2nd and 3rd with not outs in the second was encouraging.
This Padres lineup , no matter how much we dislike them, is still formidable from top to bottom and Bobby kept us in the game. Needs to put hitters away more often and faster when he has two strikes on them. Too often he starts to nibble and be too perfect. He will learn.

      Go Dodgers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      1. I find it hard to believe that Grove can last 5 innings having to face that lineup, considering Miller didn’t even make it through 4.

        How about:
        Grove – 3
        Yarbrough – 4
        Graterol – 1
        Brasier – 1

  19. If were moving Smith from the catcher position we need to get a catcher that takes control of the pither it seems like nowadays catchers are afraid to go out and talk to the pitcher when hes struggling.

    1. Methinks Snell would be a Plan B or C, with Ohtani as Plan A.
The latest sign of this is the apparent refusal to extend Rodriguez’s contract. The Dodgers wanted him as a rental. The pursuit of Ohtani may also push Julio to bigger offers elsewhere.
My guess on next year’s six-man rotation:
      Ohtani
Kershaw (unless he goes to Texas)
      Buhler
      Miller
      Gonsolin
Stone or Sheehan, with May returning in midseason.

  20. Friday scores
Oklahoma City 7, Round Rock 1
    Tulsa 14, Wichita 7
Great Lakes 8, Fort Wayne 4
    Fresno 2, Rancho Cucamonga 1.

    Saturday schedule
3:35 p.m. PT: Great Lakes (TBD) at Fort Wayne (Miguel Cienfuegos)
4:05 p.m.: Tulsa (Kendall Williams) at Wichita (Jaylen Nowlin)
5:05 p.m.: Oklahoma City (Landon Knack) vs. Round Rock (TBD)
6:50 p.m.: Rancho Cucamonga (Jared Karros) at Fresno (Alberto Pacheco)

    1. Kendall Williams has been promoted to Tulsa and is getting his first start there. He put up a 1.99 ERA this year in Great Lakes. Williams was obtained in the trade of Ross Stripling. He will need a couple more years (he’s 22), but he could be a back-of-the-rotation guy or a swingman. Sounds like Chicken Strip!

  21. FWIW:

Not a clown suit in site at US Open. Dago laying low. Front runners.

If they win today: bet on the sheep fronting their colors. Always happens.

    1. Rosario is an impressive athlete. That snowcone web gem at 2B yesterday was amazing. Not sure if its true, but he looks like maybe the fastest guy on a team that has needed more speed.
Max sitting and Taylor playing against Snell. Makes sense, because Taylor’s OPS against southpaws is about 200 points higher than Max’s.
Rosario is an impressive athlete. That snowcone web gem at 2B yesterday was amazing. Not sure if its true, but he looks like maybe the fastest guy on a team that has needed more speed.
The only lefty bats in today’s starting lineup are Freddie and Outman. So maybe there’s a problem with those LADT suggestions that Outman would be platooned.
Hey Mark! Did you see that Outman’s OBP is up to .352! The only regulars with better numbers are Freddie, Mookie and Will. Outman’s OBP is better than both Max (at .332, despite all those walks) and the all-star JDM (at .311).
For the past several weeks, Outman’s progress has been pretty linear. He’s raised his BA, his OBP, his OPS. He’s striking out less and walking more. He’s making big plays on defense and stealing bases.
      Such a shiny object!

      1. Oh, I see you did notice how well Outman is playing!
        Here’s what I don’t get…
When you praise Vargas, I think the term “effusive” applies. Two examples: You predicted that he wold contend for ROY and described his defense as “stellar” when Roberts was calling it “OK.” You also just suggested that he should be close to “untouchable,” which I find odd, especially if Mookie moves to the infield.
When you praise Outman, I think the term “grudging” applies, as if you still want him to be no better than a 4th or 5th outfielder. You seem annoyed by his success. You diss his defense and cite his 32% K rate–but at least you aren’t inflating the K rate as you had in the past.

  23. Hey rancho Cucamonga is playing Fresno this weekend might want to go see this Rushing guy anyone else I should watch out for. A good win last nite now see how this Yarebourgh pitches tonite wish we can get Snell as a free agent this off season he is a good guy to bad he is stuck on the Padres.

    1. Rushing is with High A.

RC boasts Liranzo, Diaz, Doncon, DePaula & new draftee Gelof.

  24. Karros pitches tonite so I am going to go see how he looks so there’s low A ball and high A ball now when I worked for the Visalia oaks and Kent hrbek and pucket and gagne went threw there pat mahomes it was A ball then AA ball then AAA I also saw when Piazza Stubbs and Karros all played for the Bakersfield Dodger now there’s so many minor league levels.

    1. Really 4 Levels:

      Low A – Rancho
      High A – Great Lakes
      AA – Tulsa
      AAA – OKC

Of course, there are the Rookie Leagues, but I remember when there were a lot more teams. They are much fewer now.

      1. That’s why Fresno needs a AAA affiliation and hopefully when the As move to Vegas we become the AAA team for the As or whenever they expand two new teams the MLB. Single A ball just doesn’t pack that big stadium like when we were the Giants and Astros and when nationals AAA affiliation. If we get that As franchise it be golden because with us only 45 min by plane to Vegas from Fresno. Rather then have where there AAA team is now I think it’s down in the south some where. It use to be in Sacramento until the Giants grabbed that and moved from Fresno. Single A ball just doesn’t draw fans because it’s like watching high school ball players. At least AAA you see guys rehabbing or were in the majors at one time.

      1. I saw Kurt Russell, yep, the actor, play AA ball for the El Paso Diablos when I was stationed at FT. Bliss. Saw Lee Lacy play there when it was a Dodger farm team the year prior to the Angels taking over. Saw Frank Panick, Dave Collins, Ron Jackson. They had a good team. Russell was a second baseman. But he was there a week and ruined his shoulder. Never played for them again. I remember when the Dodgers had two AAA teams, Montreal and St, Paul.

        1. Kurt Russell father was part owner of the Portland AAA team and they were so close to getting a major league franchise but the commissioner thought Seattle would be better. There’s a movie about that they were call the Portland Wranglers or Pilots and they played one year for the AAA PCL championship good moving and Kurt Russell is in it.

          1. The documentary is called “The Battered Bastards of Baseball” . It was on Netflix not long ago. Really a hoot.
Kurt Russell’s dad Bing, a Hollywood character actor, was the owner. He likened himself to Henry Hill in “The Music Man” as the impresario of the team. One of the great elements of the documentary is how “Ball Four” author Jim Bouton made a comeback in his 40s to pitch for them.

        2. In the world of small town baseball you take interest in top prospects and celebrate when they hit the bigs and stick.

My grandad would keep me posted on Ed Kranepool or some other Met prospect as they moved up the ladder. He ‘d usually remark that so or so had a “hitch” in his swing that needed smoothing out.

Fun stuff yakking with an old catcher about young players.
‘…..shoulda seen Mantle when he was 19…..”. Yadda, yadda.

      2. Goldschmidt that must have been when they became the Diamondbacks affiliation way after my time I was there when they were affiliated with the twins as a bat boy then worked in stadium promotions and ordering stuff for supplies and taking players to the airport when they got let go or new guys came in. I left and I think they were going to be the Rockies affiliation and now the Diamondbacks affiliation.

        1. “….Bastards…” cool flick.

How things have changed since those days. If you grew up small town (me) with your own low minor league stadium, you know the vibe.

  25. Taylor steals two bags and scores on Kike’s sac fly!
Nice to see the running game for a change.

    1. Love seeing that kind of baseball pitcher makes a mistake walking the batter and 2 stolen bases with a sacrifice fly. My kind of baseball. Not 3 outcomes.

I’m sure this was the plan have Grove get through the right handed bats and turn it over to Yarbrough. But sometimes you have to watch what is happening. Grove was dominant.

  26. Who’s the guy who stole Groves uniform and pitching tonight? Love love love the off speed stuff and keep the fastball out of the middle. Nice to see him have a good outing before he gets sent down! Very promising!

  27. You just can’t walk Kim there! And then Tatis. Givin this thing away!! Brutal Almonte!

  28. Inning started with a gift base hit by CT3 who couldn’t make a play on what looked like a pretty routine ground ball.

Ferguson is not a high leverage RP. Freaking horrible throw by Caleb when they had Machado picked off. Little league taught you to run right at the base runner. Threw the ball when he didn’t have to and threw it high. HE IS NOT A HIGH LEVERAGE RP. Shrinks too often when the pressure is on.

    1. Almonte and especially Ferguson looking like clowns with no Huevos tonight
You could just see the fear in both of their faces
Tommy would’ve been out there telling Ferguson to suck it up and man up

    2. Yep. I think Max makes that play. But certainly Taylor should have.
Almonte, Kike, Caleb–all had some awful moments.

  29. I’m sorry, but Roberts is a poor tactician. He over manages, he paints himself into corners, he fails to adapt.

  30. What the hell Kike wanted to do. !!! Poor, Poor 8th inning . Almonte and Ferguson both are not for closed and pressured games

  31. Despite the troubles that Vesia has had this season, I trust him more in high leverage situations than Ferguson. Something about Ferguson’s body language just bothers me at times. He completely messed up that rundown, obviously. Already mentioned, but run right at Machado and force him to a base. Step where you are throwing.
I might have missed something but with game tied at three and runners at second and third, Machado up with one out, why don’t we intentionally walk Machado? Seemed to be a strange decision. But neither Joe nor Orel mentioned it. I would rather face Bogaerts with a chance to get a double play and get out of the inning.
This game is informative for Dodgers in that it was a high leverage 8th inning with a lot of intensity and the situation seemed too big for both Almonte and Ferguson. Long time until playoffs but I would guess that Phillips, Graterol, Kelly, Brasier and Shelby Miller will be the right handers out of the pen and Almonte may be watching.
Yarbrough gives Dodgers another lefty though I like him as a bulk guy in a third or fourth playoff game.
Will be interesting to see if Stone or Pepiot pitch for Dodgers over this last seven weeks. I would think Dodgers look at both of them again in majors. Stone has pitched pretty well over his last 4 starts and was dominant last night. Pepiot is a couple of starts away from being built up.

    1. Good points. A very disappointing loss. But Some things to learn from this game.
Almonte was not good today and should not be pitching the 8th inning of a tight game. And not only was Ferguson terrible today but he was bad last night also. The bullpen implosion tonight started last night when Ferguson was given a 7-3 lead in the 8th and could only get two outs. Phillips had to enter in the 8th inning to bail Ferguson out. Ferguson started the 8th last night by hitting a player and then walking a batter with a 4 run lead. Only a great play by Rosario prevented more damage.
And then with a 10-4 lead last night, for some reason Roberts rolled out Phillips in the 9th inning. This is at least half a dozen times that Roberts has used Phillips in a very low leverage situation. For comparison, tonight Melvin did not pitch Hader in the 9th inning with a 5 run lead.
If Ferguson had done his job last night, then Phillips would have been fully available tonight for 2 innings if necessary. And if Roberts had not pitched Phillips in the 9th last night, he would have been available in the 8th inning jam tonight.
The players need to get the job done. And between Almonte, Ferguson, Kiké and Taylor, they did not perform in the 8th inning tonight.
Hopefully this is just a bad night and they bounce back tomorrow with a big win.

  32. Is Almonte’s family okay? After being held hostage till the game was thrown. Because he sure looked like he did that on purpose.

    1. Well, there WAS 80 billion wagered in online sports betting last year. With that much $$cabbage$$, pretty much guaranteed something fishy is going on somewhere some of the time.

  33. Was like Friday’s game in reverse.

Those two games make you realise why you love Baseball so much.
