  1. Myself, I believe AF should have addressed some of the issues with this team during the winter. Of course his bullpen has been a huge disappointment. But the injuries to the starters have not helped much. The 8 are now 2. I think Grove has a long way to go before I would consider him a viable piece of the rotation. May might be back, and then again he might not pitch again until late in 24. Urias, even before the injury was not very consistent. Syndergaard is a disaster. Gonsolin, an injury waiting to happen. Good news is that he pitches well at Dodger Stadium. If they trade for a starter, I do not believe they will get a top of the rotation guy. They might even get someone who is struggling. Forget Ohtani, with the Angels still in contention, he is not going anywhere.

    1. True, wild card teams have won quite a few times. But Matt, if you were running the team, I am pretty sure you would make some changes. There are way too many weak links on this team.

      1. I think health is the main thing right now.

Get Urias, May, Gonso, back to where they should be and this team is right where it needs to be.

Ill take Burnes at the deadline….

        1. A team will “peak at the right time” if it has the talent.
To those who suggest that the playoffs just come down to which team is hot, or luck, I will again quote Branch Rickey: ” Luck is the residue of design.”
I will also remind everyone here how last season the Dodgers won 111 games but entered the playoffs with a terribly weak bench: the slumping Gallo, the not-ready rookie Vargas, and Barnes. Belli’s struggles enabled Trayce, a journeyman, to become a starter.

    1. Me too. I’m just wondering if he will predict that we only get Trout, Ohtani and Acuna. Or if he thinks AF will really go “all in” and get even more!

  2. I have to dive back into a decade or more ago since the Dodgers had this many issues in their pitching staff. Pitching depth has always been a priority and it has shown this year.

If you had told me before ST that Thor would completely implode. That the Dodgers would have Lux, May, Utias, Pepiot and Buehler out for the season or significant amount of time… AND that are best bullpen arms from last year would have ERAs in the 6:00+ range…….yet somehow we would still be 8 games over .500 and just 3.5 out of first and 5+ games ahead of the padres?? I would have laughed.

Our pitching depth has kept this from becoming a total disaster of a season. Train wreck level disaster.

We have been accustom to being at or near the top in team ERA for years. We are now simply average. Giving up almost 2 more runs a game than last year. But given the issues we have had, average is pretty impressive.

We lost Trea and Justin Turner. Lux for the season. And replaced them with JD , Miguel Rojas and a Jason Heyward we the whole of the MLB had written off. Yet, our offense has actually improved over last year. I wouldn’t have believed that either.

Somehow we’ve managed to cobble together a team every game that has kept the Dodgers right in the hunt. That, when taking a step back, is quite impressive. But I agree that AF will make some moves before the deadline. I agree with Bear, it won’t be a top of the rotation arm but likely back of the rotation. And I think he will add a bullpen piece. Likely an inning eater, or maybe two. High leverage arms cost a fortune in a trade and are anything but a sure thing.

And I don’t expect we will make many moves on offense. The available talent is likely going to so thin that landing anybody better than the options we have internally will require a massive overpay.

So aside from a couple moves to improve pitching depth, I think the Dodgers will look to stand pat on the offensive side. Hope that Outman improves. That Vargas gets hot (he has to at some point) and Heyward continues to be a solid productive outfielder. And that Muncy gets hot again (at the right time). I have a love hate with Muncy. He’s either the best power hitter in baseball or statue with a bat. When he’s cold it is painful to watch.

I think it’s very likely that we limp our way into the playoffs. After that anything can happen. And if we get more healthy, we could still win the division. Given all the issues, we’re lucky we are where we are. Just get into the playoffs. If we have Kersh, Urias and any other of our starters healthy… we have as good a chance as any, given the new playoff structure.

  3. Way too early to make a suggestion what should happen by the trade deadline.
Depends on health and where we are in the standings.

Suppose both May and Urias will not return or not return in due time and we fall farther behind in the standings.
Would you consider selling instead of buying ? A lot can happen in the next 6 weeks for the better or worse.

    Go Dodgers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    1. On the mark take. With all the bad luck with injuries, and under-performing players, I could see AF make both “seller/buyer” trades by the deadline.

  4. I don’t know what will happen at the Trade Deadline. Some great comments here that are thought provoking, especially Jayne Cobb’s.
I personally don’t expect much action from the Dodgers. I think AF is biding him time and won’t do anything crazy in this year of transition. He sort of mapped this course in the off season and I don’t predict a change from that now. I think we will see lots of moves in the off-season and nothin much this year unless something falls into his lap. I’m still good with that. We aren’t going to rebuild a team at the deadline. We need to get guys healthy, hope the kids take advantage of their opportunities and the bottom of the order to play better offensively. At least get the ball in play and improve situational hitting.

So I was looking at the difference between 2022 and 111 wins and now. I’m just going to post this and you can draw your own conclusions:

    Name / 2022 stats / 2023 stats
    Alex Reyes – missed 2022 / 60 day IL, out for 2023
Blake Treinen – 1.80 / out for the season
Daniel Hudson – 2.22 / out for the season
    Jimmy Nelson – missed 2022 / 60 day IL
    J.P. Feyereisen – 0.00 ERA Tampa Bay / 60 day IL

Tyler Anderson – 2.57 / gone to Angels
Andrew Heaney – 3.10 / gone to Texas
Chris Martin – 1.46 / gone to Boston
Tommy Kahnle – 2.84 / gone to NYY
Adam Kolarek – 4.58 @ Oakland /just called up from AAA

    Urias – 2.16 / 15 day IL
Buehler – 4.2 / 60 day IL (out until Aug – Sept at least)
May – 4.5 / 60 day IL (out until Aug – Sept at least)
    Stone – MiLB / 14.40
    Pepiot – 3.47 / 60 day IL
    Bickford – 4.7 / 7.33 & 15 day IL
    Fergie – 1.82 / 3.91
Andre Jackson – 1.86 / 6.62, just sent to AAA
    Vesia – 2.15 / 6.61
    Graterol – 3.26 / 1.95 (finally someone who improved)

  5. Honestly, I don’t think we have a chance to win the NLCS without two more quality starters and two more quality bull pen guys.

    Why do I say that?

    Easy….

DMay…. I’m not counting on seeing him at all in 2023 ….see you in 2024, if you’re lucky.

TGonsolin…..I don’t think he can sustain good health that long, so I expect him to be sidelined for the stretch run

    Grove….not a chance

BMiller…..,I’m concerned that his arm won’t be able to take the mileage that will be asked of him. So yeah, I expect he will be iffy for the stretch run too.

JUrias…..I do expect him back, especially because he is playing for his next contract

CKershaw….based on his recent history, one could make a good case that he too will be sidelined at some point, but for how long is another question…but maybe not

Thor…..may this name be stricken from LADT dialog beginning now

    Conclusion:
The way I see it, we can probably count on Urias and Kershaw, and maybe Miller. Imdont think that is enough, especially if one of those three drops out for good.

No need for me to analyze the bullpen for now….this has been too lengthy already.

    1. Im sure Phillie fans were saying this exact same thing at this time last year…..its baseball things happen.

I like our chances as much as anyones….

    2. Agree with ALL your pitching thoughts…..unfortunately.

Different subject: IF (BIG if) Dodgers finish very “out of it” or exit playoffs quickly (again UGH) does Kershaw come back? I’m pretty sick of the Ranger discussion every year. I think he’ll never wear another jersey but will he just STOP wearing them all together?

      1. Might depend just how pissed and disappointed CK is over June 16th.

And Watford: “Kershaw – lots of Playoff experience – would get us a decent Prospect”. I don’t see the Dodgers ever trading him. He may decide to not resign with the Dodgers but never traded.

Also, I would look to get players for Muncy before he’s a FA. I don’t have much use for the Joey Gallo type 3 outcome guys even with a good OPS. I like the ball in play and not “the house by the side of the road”. Or “a statue with a bat”. Good line.

CT3 needs to be bundled. Not enough bang for the buck. Cut losses here for prospects.

We should have a much better idea after the season about the kids.

And finally be rid of the Bauer Curse and 28 big ones.

  6. Interesting takes here.

If we conceded that this was a transitional year and that things have subsequently gone against us, and the likelihood of success this year is remote and therefore decided to cash in some chips – who would we trade and what could we expect back?

Julio – FA after the season’s end would fetch a good haul of Prospects. He’s an Ace or thereabouts on most teams.

Kershaw – lots of Playoff experience – would get us a decent Prospect

JDM – having a great season -would certainly get a decent return.

Muncy – another year left but Dodgers might think it prudent to cash in – certainly would have his suitors with his lengthy history of post season success.(this one’s for you Bums).

Heyward – better than advertised – someone might want his experience off the bench.

Could we package CT3 with someone as a salary dump?

Not sure if there’s any Relievers who are on one year deals, or that others might deem a good pick up?

In the case’s of Julio, Clayton and JDM, we could sign them all back at the season’s end (with Cody)!

Imagine the Farm System which is already stacked, with the returns for the above?

Plus there’s a ton of money coming off the books next year which means we could look at the top of the FA market?

Not saying it’s what will happen, but it must be worth considering?

    1. That would be asking AF to give up on the season, and why?

This is a team that can still win it all with a few breaks.

A couple of under-the-radar trades and/or a return to health by a couple of players… getting hot in the playoffs and it’s on. Look at ATL in 2021 and the Nats in 2019!

  7. Sign Urias.
Kershaw is not happy with the Dodgers handling of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence situation. I think he will go to the Rangers next year and finish his career there. Hope I am wrong.
May is done for the year.
Bobby Miller is the real deal and he knows it. Interested in how he will do when he goes around the league in the next few months. I believe he may initially struggle; however, he will adjust.
Hopefully, Friedman can make some moves to strengthen bullpen.
Dodgers will win what is not a strong division

  8. Pitching, one good #3 or # 4 pitcher and a real closer. Don´t forget a Manager. Let Thor go. Go Dodgers.!!!!

    1. Sorry Carlos, Roberts is not going anywhere. Ownership and the front office love the guy. So do his players. Only ones bitching are the fans.

  9. I commented about a month ago that I would like to see AF get Luis Robert Jr. Don’t know if Chicago would tear it down that far. They’re only 4.5 games out of the central and might not be sellers.

If any moves are made I can see it for a couple under the radar relievers like Martin last year. Also maybe a #3 or 4 starter to eat innings.

Not sure any moves will be made I think the hope is to get healthy. I’m doubtful May or Buehler makes it back as a starter this year. Hudson, Nelson and Feyereisen healthy should help out the bullpen.

A healthy Pepiot and Urias would round out the rotation. DeLuca hitting lefties would help a lot. Better production from Rojas, Vargas and Outman would go along way for a playoff push. I like this year is a transition year, but I still believe this is a playoff team.

On Kershaw I always thought he would be back in 2024 to get 3000 strikeouts and be back in 2025 to pass Sutton for most wins as a Dodger. Now I’m not so sure after the pride night stuff.

    1. Ron, my post from earlier today:
      * The White Sox are 29-38 and underperforming. Some have expressed interest in some of their players and the next few series are critical to see if the are buyers or sellers. The have us, Seattle Texas, and Boston coming up. I would only be vaguely interested in Giolito, but especially interested in Luis Robert Jr. They may not want to part with him but it’s worth a look. He’s signed through 2025 with a 2 yr option, at $8.3 million per and worth every penny. He’s hitting .390 vs LHP.
Again, I’m not breaking the bank at the deadline.

  10. “Kershaw is not happy with the Dodgers handling of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence situation. I think he will go to the Rangers next year and finish his career there.”

All we need is the sisters to visit Globe Life, (Dallas is blue enough), this summer to ensure Clayton doesn’t go there.

  11. Some good stuff there. I believe the only way the Dodgers would ever trade Kershaw is if he requested them to do it. CK pretty much has carte blanche with the front office and ownership. But I am also pretty certain that CK, being the professional he is, he would rather play the season out. If they were to win the series, and that is a huge if, then he might just retire. And the reason I say that is because I am not completely sold that getting to certain plateaus and records are that important to him. I think his family and his faith are his most important things. He has voiced his opinion about the pride night, the team and the media know exactly how he feels.

    1. Interesting notion.
Would Kersh ask for a trade? I doubt it. But still…
With deGrom out, the Rangers need an SP–but what could the Dodgers get back?
Kershaw may well be pissed with Dodgers management, but he’d also like to be with a winner–and now Texas is the hottest team in the game. (He could have had his family and faith while playing for a loser.
I have long assumed Kersh will play as long as he’s healthy and productive–and that he’d stay with the Dodgers for the duration. Now I’m not so sure. Maybe 60/40 that he leaves.
So maybe this “year of transition” means moving to the post-Kershaw era…

  12. Martinez and Freddie the early leaders at their positions in the All-Star voting. Mookie in the top 3 for NL outfielders. Smith trails Atlanta’s Murphy by a couple hundred thousand votes. Nobody else in the running so far. Kersh will be an All-Star again unless the unthinkable happens.

  13. IMO: We need a right handed hitting outfielder. I wouldn’t give a lot for him. A David Fresse, or some constant right handed hitter that’s approaching the end but can still put the bat on the ball. If not an outfielder then a pinch hitter in that mode like a Nellie Cruz (Padres would never make the trade. I don’t think we need a brasher.

Bullpens are like trying to figure out jr. high kids. Their minds can be eight places at once. Personally I like our bullpen although it isn’t getting the job done right now. I’ll be in the minority but our pitching staff isn’t bad if we can just get a few pieces back from the IR.

What I love about our organization is that it is built within. The Padres are figuring out that castles built in the sand fall into the sea eventually. Please don’t blow up our system for rentals. When some of our players age out in the minors our front office has been masterful of trading those players for young players to help our system. Right now we are lacking left handed pitching. We could replenish this with some of our tweeners (players that are good in the minors but aren’t getting it done in the show and are out of options.) Or have the years to be a minor league free agent.

    Fun subject

    1. Cruz is 42. He is at AAA El Paso right now. He is strictly a DH. We do not need a DH. Now if we could find a RH power hitting outfielder, who hits lefties, that would be perfect. Taylor could go back to his super sub job, of which he is pretty good at. I have zero faith in Muncy turning things around right now. He is the same guy he was last year with slightly more power. He has not been very good since his injury on the last day of the season in 21. Heyward and Peralta are virtually the same player. Heyward can play a little first base. Peralta is strictly an outfielder. I would move Mookie permanently to the infield. And pursue I right-handed power hitting outfielder. I do not like Max’s glove at third, but I cannot see them finding a solid fielding 3B with 30 HR power on the market.

      1. My right handed hitter if we couldn’t get a right handed outfielder, is old school, a pinch hitter delux. That’s where I was going with Cruz. Cruz is a lot like Freeman, he could get up in the middle of January and hit a line drive. The perfect fix would be Miggy. The Tigers would want to much for him. Bottom of the ninth two on, sending a professional hitter to the plate would be his worth on the roster.

        1. Miggy? Miggy Cabrera? The Tigers would want too much for him?
He’s hitting .215 with 0 home runs and 7 RBI and he’s earning 32 million dollars this year.
They’d be happy to give him away for nothing to save $16MM and would gladly pay his plane fare to wherever we’d want him delivered.

No doubt, he’s one of the greatest hitters ever to wear a uniform but he’s way beyond his prime and there is no way AF would use up a roster spot on him.

          1. Bring back Tio Albert! Neither one of those guys is the answer. Professional hitters are few and far between. And most of them are old. You want power off of the bench? Trade for Stanton. But he won’t be available. And there is no one in the organization that fits that bill. David Freitas is hitting .400 at OKC> Catcher-DH type with some pop. Busch is up over .300 and has hit homers in all of his last 3 games. Jones is hitting over .300 there too. As is Devin Mann.

    2. How do you get a righty-swinging outfielder?
An obvious trade target is the A’s Brent Rooker. He was considered an underachiever until now. Billy Beane might want to keep him, but he might prefer to get a few prospects for the Vegas reboot, why not? No doubt there are other options among the likely “sellers.”
Less obvious targets: the Angels’ Hunter Renfroe or Taylor Ward. Former top pick Mickey Moniak, acquired from the Phils, is having a breakout season. The Angels may not deal Ohtani, but perhaps they’d move a spare outfielder. (Angels may also have a bit more faith now in the maddening Jo Adell.)
The White Sox should be sellers, but I doubt they’d want to deal Luis Robert. He’d be expensive.
Hey, remember when folks here thought JD Martinez might play a little LF? He did get out there in crunch the other day.
We can also reconsider Mark’s outside-the-box trade plan: Get Salvador Perez from the last-place Royals and move Will Smith to LF.
By the way, before the Dodgers signed Peralta, I was promoting that AF get McCutcheon for an unorthodox platoon with Trayce. Cutch’s return to the Pirates has been successful, and a good story–he just got hit No. 2,000. But I still think McCutcheon would have been a better fit than Peralta.
Meanwhile, we can just hope that DeLuca delivers.

      1. MLBTR stated today that the Royals are not trading Perez. I agree he would be a perfect fit. But it ain’t happening. Rooker would be a nice addition.

        1. Grichuk is a possiblity. Solid veteran now on the Rockies, who are obviously going nowhere and might want to take a prospect from the Dodgers.
Pretty sure this is Grichuk’s walk year.
Really nice outing by Gonsolin today.
Some of the “sellers” really don’t seem to have much to sell.
In crosstown news, the Angels had another nice come-from-behind win over the potent Rangers again, this time without Trout. Perry Minassian’s rebuild is looking really good. The veteran acquisitions Renfroe, Drury, Urshela and Estevez have all strengthened the team, and the fast-tracked rookie Zach Neto has taken control of the SS position. Newcomer Mickey Moniak–acquired from the Phils for Syndergaard!– is showing why a few years back he was a No. 1 overall pick. (And btw, Ohtani leads the league with 20 HRs.)
Looks like the Halos will buyers and probably compete with the Dodgers for an SP.

      2. So, you are saying that you would rather have McCutchen than JDM, because Cutch is now a DH?! He rarely played the field and he is not a plus defender in LF. Today, right now, he has better stats than Peralta (after Peralta’s slow start) but re-visit this in a couple of months.

        Peralta is a Righty Killer!

        1. No, I said that I had wanted Cutch for an unorthodox platoon with Trayce. Didn’t I write that?
He would have been a complement to Trayce’s reverse splits. At the time, the alternative seemed to be a platoon of Trayce and Taylor–and something north of 200Ks from LF.
So when AF signed Peralta it was a bit of head-scratcher. Good veteran, decent price…. but didn’t the team already have Heyward, Outman and Trayce? If the Dodgers were committed to Trayce–and obviously they were–wouldn’t a righty bat to hit lefties make more sense?
Hey, when is JDM playing leftfield, Mark?
Are you saying that Cutch is now exclusively DH? Are the Pirates afraid of putting him out there the way the Dodgers are wary of putting JDM in the field? I had not heard that. If Cutch is DHing, I assume it’s a reflection of Pirates OF talent.
In other news, wasn’t it mean of Freddie and Gonsolin to prank Vargas on that play at first today?
Not scored an error…. but it really was.

  14. There is so little talent from selling teams and the competition will be fierce for what little is out there. And AF isn’t much of an over payer. I don’t expect any real difference makers come the deadline. Health is a big issue and someone from the bottom of the order to hit better. Like one of our ROY’s! Can our bullpen pitch anywhere like last year?

    1. Outman is what he is, and what he is is a K machine. He has been a little better lately, but I do not see over the top defense from the guy either. Hopefully DeLuca shows he belongs. You are right that the talent pool at the deadline might be somewhat thin. But the Dodgers, even with their vaunted depth, right now are not as deep as most think they are. Most of the gems are in the lower minors. Michael Busch though has heated up considerably. Maybe he needs a real shot.

        1. Might be the case. Never can tell. I like the guys make up better than I do Vargas, but I think I am partial to left handed hitting infielders.

      1. Outman’s reads in CF are so/so. Did he play much CF?

Joc was better. 25# later? Not so much.

  15. I think a proven SP will be the Dodgers’ greatest need. They’ll have plenty of competition from other contenders.
Another bat and a proven RP can also help.
AF could be busy. I like the idea of moving Mookie to SS to make room for a strong righty bat for the OF.

    1. I agree. But where do we find a good one? I would not mind getting someone like Giolitto. He might be struggling now, but Pryor might find the key to unlocking that talent we all know he has.

  16. With the Dodgers off today, I turn my attention to the Angels, who had a pretty spectacular 9-6 road win in 12 innings over the hot Rangers.
The headline is that Ohtani hit his 20th homer in the 12th. Then Tim Wallach’s son Chad added another 2-run HR. There was plenty of drama along with way, with good defense and a controversial call that the Halos overcame.
The victory improve the Angels’ record to 37-31, just a bit worse than the Dodgers’ 37-29. And the Angels have been performing with Trout having an off-season, down about 75 points off his usual OPS
The Angels’ success this season may have some lessons for the Dodgers. Like why don’t the Dodgers have anyone like Chad Wallach? He was called up when rookie Logan O’ Hoppe became injured and he’s been excellent. With Barnes struggling so badly, I hope Hunter Feduccia gets a shot. Obviously the brass doesn’t want to rush Cartaya.
But hey, how about that Ohtani guy?
He’s on a pace to his about 57 HRs.
    Not bad for a pitcher.

    1. Chad Wallach was once a Dodger. He was originally drafted by the Dodgers in 2010. But he did not sign. He then was drafted by the Marlins in 2013. The Marlins traded him to the Reds in the Mat Latos deal with Tony DeSclafani, yeah, the Giants pitcher, he was then retaken by the Marlins off waivers. In 2021 in July, the Dodgers selected him off waivers from Miami. Then the Angels did the same thing in 2022 from the Dodgers in August. He became a free agent and signed 19 days after he declared by the Angels. He played exactly one game with OKC.

  17. Bear, look what you did. What a great, simple opening question to solicit conversation.
This question brought out opinions from the Varsity.

    1. If Muncy doesn’t significantly improve his batting stats by the end of this month, then add me to that bandwagon.

    2. I sure was hoping for a Muncy comeback year. He’s doing ok in the HR dep’t, but he’s got to get his BA up. I don’t get to see that many games, but when I do it seems like he’s really hitting the ball hard, but right at some one. You can see the frustration on his face. Hopefully, some of these start finding holes and his BA starts climbing.

      1. He has hit in some bad luck that is for sure. So did Peralta and Heyward. For about a week, every hard hit ball Heyward hit wound up in someone’s glove. But Max sometimes is too patient. I have seen him do the Cody Bellinger thing and swing at pitches low and away he couldn’t hit with an oar. Then he will take a fastball right in the middle of the plate with the bat sitting on his shoulder. I really dislike the true three outcome hitter, and that is what Max is.

  18. Someone needs to have a word with the .500 DiamondBacks as they are known around these parts!

  19. Off-topic (but something that probably affects trade needs) –
I’ll probably incur the wrath-of-Mark for opining this, ..but though I’m still bullish on Vargas’ future with the bat, I just don’t think that “future” arrives any time this season, ..but will by sometime next year. So his present batting stats will remain fairly constant for the rest of this year.

    1. How many rookies actually get it the first time around. One learns from failure. Outman and Vargas are getting OJT. And they are learning no matter how good you are, major league pitchers will find your kryptonite.

    2. I am fine with that opinion. Why should you not be able to express that?

I have no problem with that stuff. You may or may not be right.

Every time Vargas has moved up a level, it took him several weeks ton adjust and then mash!

This time he got injured and developed some bad habits… like not being aggressive.

So, it is taking longer. I think he will be fine, but he has to show us.

  20. There really isn’t anything that is appealing in the trade market this year. Hopefully Hudson can come back and shore up the bullpen. Bring up more pitching prospect to see if their future is a Dodger. I hate to say it and many will disagree, but this is NOT our year to compete for a World Series Championship. Too many injuries to key components. I would personally not give up key prospects for a short run in the playoffs.

  21. Interesting breakdown of Gavin Stone’s delivery on Dodger Digest. His issues look to be mechanical. Good video from 2022 and 2023. Shows differences in his break point of his hands and release point of his fastball, change and curve. If he can fix this he might be a big plus down the stretch.

  22. As Dodger GM, I would build the roster with 3 priorities:

    1. Be pitching dominant in 2024
    2. Upgrade the left side of the infield through trade and/or cash
    3. Use prospects (including Outman) to land a solid outfielder

I think Kershaw leaves, but I think we sign Julio to a 3-yr $40/yr deal with opt-outs, which means we get him for one more season. Behind Julio would May, Buehler, Gonsolin, Miller, and Pepio. As Ohtani and it’s lights out. Other young arms (Grove, Stone, et al) continue to develop , get called-up for breathers, and possibly bolster the bullpen.

We need an elite fielding shortstop and third-baseman. We’re not likely to find them at the same time, but we need to be ready to pounce.

High caliber, right-handed power hitting outfielders are rare and expensive. I still think there’s a chance to get Reynolds from Pittsburgh. Outman’s value may never be higher. We need to be bold.

    1. CK ain’t leaving. He staying to show to himself he ain’t no has been And if I were the GM I’d recognize what this organization owes him. CK purely bleeds blue. Talk about earning his paycheck, What the team needs is another pitcher just like him. Tough task, huh?

    2. I hate to burst your bubble, but there is no way Julio gets signed for 3/40. Even with opt-outs. His agent is Scott Boras. He is going to be looking for at least 6 and well over 100 mil. Pitt might trade Reynolds, but he would be extremely expensive.

        1. I repeat, no way he takes that kind of money. His agent will make sure of that, and trust me, there will be a team out there that kicks the tires on him for at least 5/100.

    3. 4-Gems: Good points but I’m thinking that AF hasn’t forgotten about Lux being the SS next year, that we’ve missed this season. He still untested there but it was is job to lose this season and I think he gets first dibs next year.
Muncy still may be at 3rd base, depending on what happens to JDM as a DH and if we want to package Muncy in a deal. Then I think Vargas or Will Smith move to 3rd, depending on Cartaya and Feducca being ready. So, I don’t see an upgrade on the left side of the infield as a priority for next year.

      1. Muncy’s option for next year is a team option. I think the teams loyalty to the guy ends after this year if he does not start showing some consistency. He has not done that since 21. I think his injury bothered him a lot more than anyone knows.

  23. Man the pessimists come out after a rough stretch.

I heard a lot of the same things in ’18 and ya know what, that team made the World Series and if not for the cheating scum-bag Cora we probably win that one too…

Ill take my chances with the boys in blue in 23 as well…..

    1. No, even with what Cora did, Boston was a superior team to the 18 Dodgers. And Boston was only accused of cheating during the season, there was no evidence of foul play in the Series. Boston simply pounded the Dodgers.

        1. No I did not. I totally get where you are coming from. The 18 Dodgers had to come from behind, then tied the Rockies and had to play game 163. Buehler pitched a masterpiece and they won the division. Even with the pitching staff they had, Kersh, Wood, Maeda, Hill, Buehler and Stripling, only one of those guys had more than 10 wins, Hill, who won 11. They relied heavily on their bullpen. Ryu was a spot starter and won 7 games. Ferguson, 21 at the time, won 7 out of the pen. The pitching staff had no shutouts all year. Jansen had 38 saves, but lost 5 games and won 1. They used 29 different pitchers over the year, and Hernandez even appeared as a pitcher. He got the loss as he gave up a homer. They had 10 players with double digit homers, Grandal, Hernandez, Kemp, Puig, Turner, Bellinger, Taylor, Pederson, Muncy and Machado. Seven of those guys had 20 or more, Kemp, Bellinger, Hernandez, Grandal, Pederson, Muncy and Puig. Grandal ended up getting benched during the playoffs as Barnes heated up. Bellinger won the MVP of the NLCS despite hitting under .200. Key homer and a game saving catch got him that award. Kemp, who every body expected to not make the team, carried them in the early going and faded after the All-Star break. Seager got hurt early so they used Taylor as the main SS until they traded for Machado just before the All-Star game. I remember the entire year like it was yesterday. Steve frippen Pearce won the Series MVP as he singlehandedly manhandled Dodger pitching. The only game they won was 18 innings long because Jansen blew the save, and they won on a Muncy homer.

          1. My point was it was looking pretty bleak in 18 and they found their way to the WS. It can happen again in 23….

I was in ATL when we closed em out!

        2. That is true. I do not think it is bleak yet. I still believe Az will cool off. But unless they address the holes they have and get rid of the dead weight, I do not think they have a snowballs chance in hell of getting out of the first round. Teams are loaded and ready for bear. Excuse the pun.

  24. Its over–
I’ve been a Dodger fan for 77yrs,(yes I saw Sandy Koufax pitch)until they mocked my religion.
    Everything is insane!
AS a Korean combat veteran,I fear for my country
Nobody cares what I think, but I wanted to vent
Mark: thanks for the great site,Good Bye

    1. There is a protest being organized at Parking lot 13 at Dodger Stadium starting at 3:00 on Friday. As the SPI mock Jesus Christ as well as Catholic nuns, I am hoping to see many Protestants there as well.

  25. Coloradans going batshit crazy over the Nuggets winning the Championship. Unreal! Looks like more rain here again today. Dodgers come to Denver next week. Actor Treat Williams was killed in a motorcycle accident yesterday. He was in the movie version of Hair, and he did a comedy with Joe Piscopo called Dead Heat that was hilarious. RIP

  26. As a comment off topic, I watched Kenley Jansen last night for the 1st time this year. He looked great. Good for him.
He and Baez used to drive me crazy. At first glacé, Kenley looks to me like being sped up by the pitch clock has helped him. He seems sharper, more free and easy without all the gyrations, fidgeting and time to over-think his delivery. Working faster has suited him well.

    1. I have seen him a couple of times. He does look better. But he still has those hiccups from time to time. Boston is not going to be in the running, he is probably trade bait.

  27. Pitching, pitching and pitching, relief and starting. No idea who will be available. Better idea when July arrives.

    1. Yankees need everything – starters & bats. Gleber Torres their 3rd best bat. That’s a weak lineup. Aside from Cole – dregs.

They’ll be buying all they can. Same for Toronto, Mets , Cards – not enough good, experienced arms available.

A top scouting team & data geeks (Dodgers) may pull one off but the podcast world not high on this crop of starters.

  28. Another off topic comment. Watched the D-Backs – Phillie game last night. Corbin Carroll, who’s the leader in the clubhouse for NL, ROY, got hit by a pitch twice. After the 2nd, Lovello got run, after getting seriously in the HPU and Realmuto’s grill. Good for him.
It was his 12 ejection which leaves him 150 shy of Bobby Cox’s record of 162.
Imagine, Bobby Cox got ejected for an entire season, one game at a time.

  30. In my too many years as a high school and assistant college basketball coach, we’ve spent hours discussing and pondering how to get the most out of our athletes. One and the most common approach we used (I posted it earlier) is to get the player out of his comfort zone. There are so many ways to try this method and I believe the Dodgers did it with Betts by moving him to shortstop now and then. Good athletes will laser focus because they are good for a reason and one to e the best wherever they play. All of us have probably coached baseball at some level, I can only speak to basketball. I was an assistant baseball coach for a year or two in high school. I mentioned earlier of going to go get a right handed bat to pinch hit. I mentioned Cabrera of the Tigers. I think him having the opportunity to help win another ring would make his at quicker and his steps lighter. We don’t need another swing from the heels strike out or home run hitter. I saw Stanton of NY mentioned, to expensive and wrong type of hitter. I could go on but I hope some will pickup what I’m throwing down.

    1. A few years ago, maybe Miggy would be an option. But he has not hit much this year or the last several seasons. He is 40, he missed fastballs he used to crush. He has no homers and strikes out about 30 percent of his at bats. No, Miggy is not a viable option at this point in his career. You want a contact hitter, someone like Murphy would have been perfect.

  31. I truly believe that we have the horses to finish this race and line up good in the playoffs. Bear48 picked such a topic that a person could dream a little bit. I think the rotation in the playoffs will heavily lean on May and his recovery. If he comes ack strong we have a ether chance than anyone to bring home the hardware.

  32. Nevada Senate approved the A’s stadium plan. Now it moves to the state legislature. OKC scored 9 runs in the first inning tonight against Salt Lake City. They had 6 extra base hits in the inning. Ward has hit two homers. One in the first, and one in the second. OKC leads 10-1 in the second.

  33. Everything revolves around the starting pitching. I would build a team around 4 or 5 starters that can go 6 to 7 innings and give up 3 or less runs. Definition of a quality start. Doesn’t over tax the bullpen or the offense. By the way, a quality start of 6 innings and 3 runs is an ERA of 4.50. So they don’t have to be great pitchers to fill that roll.

  34. Kind of amazing Ferguson was that good tonight and batting practice on the road. Also the A’ s need to be broken up they just beat the Rays and extended their winning streak to 7 games.

    1. They are 21-10 at home. All of their pitchers pitch better at Dodger Stadium. Fergie did a good job as did the rest of the pen. Peralta and Heyward stay hot.

  35. After scoring 24 runs on Sunday, OKC tonight scored 17 in their win over Salt Lake City. Michael Busch went 3-4 with a homer and a triple and 4 runs batted in. It was his 7th homer of the year, and his fourth in his last five games. He is now hitting .320 with a .988 OPS. Ryan Ward clubbed two bombs and also drove in 4. The team as a whole had 11 extra base hits, 7 doubles, a triple and three homers. Every player in the starting lineup had a hit except Yurchak. Devin Mann went 3-3 and is now hitting .318. Hagenmann started and went 4 innings giving up 4 runs. Reed allowed 2 in 1.1 innings, Hudson relieved Reed and went 1.1 giving up a run and got the win. Bruihl and Suero closed the game out. Kole Calhoun was 1-3 with a ribbie.

    1. Repeating myself – but I’m convinced the Dodgers have pegged Busch as a “showcase piece” for the trade deadline.

But suppose Busch remains hot through the rest of June, then wouldn’t the Dodgers be COMPELLED to bring him back in July for another try at the show ..regardless of the difficulties of where to play him?

      1. I’d rather have Busch in the lineup right now than Outman. Give him some time in LF at OKC. Busch, Heyward and Peralta against righties and Taylor, Deluca and Rojas against lefties. Keep the train rolling tonight Kersh! We need a streak!

  36. Who still predicts that Vargas is in the hunt for ROY? I don’t think you’ll ever budge Mark off of that belief.

Just checked Corbin Carrol’s stats. He the current leader in WAR, and his wRC+ is one point higher than Freddie Freeman’s at 166 (100 is league average). That places him 3rd behind Aaron Judge and Yordan Alvarez in offensive production.

Not only, barring catastrophe, is it a foregone conclusion that he’s going to be the ROY, he’s making a good case for MVP. The Dbacks have been one of the surprise teams this year, and he’s a big reason for it. If the Dbacks win the division, he’s my NL MVP without question, which would be the first time ever that an NL player has won both ROY and MVP in the same year. Ichiro and Fred Lynn accomplished this over in the AL.

I keep saying this, but I don’t think it’s going to be a very active trade season this year. There are very few legitimate sellers, and the ones who are have nobody really worth trading for. I don’t even think the White Sox want to get rid of players they have under control for a while and they consider part of their core. Guys like Grandal? Yeah. Guys like Cease or Anderson? No. They want to compete next year and the year after. They’re not in full tear down/rebuild mode.

I read here someone mentioning Burnes from the Brewers. Do you really think the Brewers are sellers? They’re in the playoff hunt and they just got Woodruff back. They can easily win that division.

The Dodgers will not likely trade for anyone with any name recognition, but might pick up some peripheral role player that we’ve not heard of. AF might surprise me, though.

    1. Well, I can do the math, and (without a complete collapse or horrid injury) Corbin Carrol will be hard to beat. Still, I have to stick with what I said!

    2. Totally agree with you; Corbin Carroll is a star, and we’ll likely be dealing with him for the next 10 years or so.

  37. Bobby Miller is our Hershiser of 1988, Freeman is our Gibson, Peralta is our Mickey Hatcher, Heyward is our Mike Davis….if the Dodgers can win in 88 this team can too!!

  38. The Dodgers are a team of now, not later. Sure they’ve got lots of good looking prospects, but they’ve got the starters (when they’re all healthy) so they need to go for it now, and in the coming few years. So trade for Arenado, and put Muncy at second, when his hammy is all better. I’m sure Arenado would wave his no-trade clause to play for the Dodgers, his favorite team growing up. How much would it take? St. Louis needs starters, so Grove and Stone would have to be included. They’d want Pepiot, but I wouldn’t include him. Busch would be included, maybe Vargas too. Would the Cardinals want the Dodgers to take Contreras as well? If so, the Dodgers could send Syndergaard for him.

    1. Arenado might waive his no-trade, be he is not going to be traded. Why would the Cardinals trade him in the first place? Grove and Stone? You are dreaming. It would take a lot more than that, and why on earth would they want Pepiot? He hasn’t picked up a ball since spring training and has not even started soft tossing the ball. Syndergaard has about as much value as Mark’s old underwear.

      1. Yeah, the Cards are having a really bad year, but that doesn’t mean they are in tear down mode. I think they really expected to be more competitive this year, and they might think they have the core to be competitive next year. Arenado is part of that core. They would have to think that their minor league pipeline is so bare that the only way to be competitive in the future is to trade away their current stars in their prime to re-stock their farm system.

Still. I love Arenado. Wish he was a Dodger.

  39. Not doing a damn thing today but relaxing. It is my 75th birthday I am going to enjoy it even if it kills me! Kersh will give me a nice present with a win tonight.

    1. Happy Birthday Old Bear. Enjoy your day. I’ve got one in a few days, but I’ll be 78. How did all those years go by so Quickly?

    2. It’s a milestone birthday. Not quite the big 5-0 or a hundy, but pretty significant. Happy Birthday!

    3. Happy Birthday, Bear. Always enjoy reading your thoughts. I hope this coming year finds you in good health and happiness.

  40. Trevor Bauer Reportedly Facing Additional Sexual Assault Allegation.

A woman has filed a civil action against Trevor Bauer accusing him of a 2020 sexual assault in Arizona

      1. If the entire trans/CRT/social justice movement blows over any time soon I will be the first to acknowledge you were right.

Slight difference between institutional movements and some baseball player who was a dick.

        1. I read an article today that said the MLB is quietly asking teams to tone down and get rid of their pride uniforms. I guess real fans must be pissed.

  41. Josue dePaula good game yesterday. 3-4 with his first HR at RC.
18 year old five tool player. Keep an eye on him. He might be the best all around talent in our system in the outfield since Mondesi.

    Go Dodgers!!!!!!!!!!

    1. Another year older, huh? Now ain’t that a bitch? It is for me nowadays. we don’t have so much use for wisdom I’d rather have a couple things back that I’d never tired of. Aw I guess I wish you a happy birthday too! Hell of a thing to celebrate after 50. Now I’ll go hang myself.

      1. Too drastic Quas, aging is a part of living. No one promised perfection. I take the bad with the good, the great days with the not so great. The other day, I got to play music with some good friends I had not seen in about 4 years. That was a great day. Thank you my friend for the birthday wishes.

  42. I’m in. Happy Birthday Bear. I hope to enjoy CK’s win and I plan to celebrate with you.

I, however will be watching the White Sox broadcast. I have a new trick at the beginning of each new series on TV.
I record both the Dodger broadcast and the opponent’s. Like last night, if I start with the Dodger broadcast and the D-Train is in the booth, I promptly delete it and move to the opponent’s broadcast. That way I avoid a night of frustration of having to mute and listen to Pandora. I can’t stand the D-Train even in the studio with Horrible Hairston, let alone in the booth to babble on and on and say little. “you know when I pitched……….” Who gives a shit? Even the great Joe Davis can’t make him bearable.
The Sox team of Steve Stone and especially Jason Bennetti are very good. Different guy with Bennetti last night but he was super informational, humorous, respectful of the Dodgers and didn’t overtalk the game. I will get his complimentary takes on Kershaw tonight. I like listening in the opponent’s broadcasts sometimes anyway to get fresh information and their takes on the Dodgers.
I think Outman needs a visit to OKC to work on hitting fastballs up in the zone. It’s a huge hole. 3 K’s again last night and his average sink faster than the Titanic. As well as his confidence, it seems.
Let’s see whatDeLuca can do in center.
Gonzo is such a great junker. 92 fastball max, well located. Little breaker, bigger breaker, llittle add, little subtract and that disappearing splitter. He’s Stu Miller, 4.0, for the older crowd.

    1. As both bear and I have noted before, if you were stuck with Rockies broadcasters you’d be begging for the d train.

    2. Remember when Miller got blown off of the mound at Candlestick? Totally funny and he got charged with a balk. I also remember Moe Dabrowski. He once ordered Chinese food from China from the bullpen.

  43. Hope you great physical and mental health on your new trip around the sun. I’m sure a Dodgers championship would add pleasure to the trip.

  44. Happy bday Bear! I have decided to begin counting backwards celebrating bdays and already feeling much younger! Thx for keeping us going here at LATD.

    1. I do not care about Ohtani. The price will be prohibitive anyway. Thanks for the birthday wishes. I got a brand new tac-knife. Pretty cool, but only has one usage.

      1. Happy Birthday Bear!! I can’t say Old Bear since I am a bit older than you. I won’t say how old I am just that I was born in 1942. Matter of fact I may be one of the oldest ones here but I don’t feel it nor do I act that way. I was born in Brooklyn and still have the “New York attitude.”

        1. Thanks Richie. You were born a year after my cousin Joan. She is one of the few cousins of mine still alive. She was born in Minneapolis where most of my family, including my mom were born. But I am an LA boy

  47. DODGERS ACTIVATE SHELBY MILLER

LOS ANGELES– The Los Angeles Dodgers activated right-handed pitcher Shelby Miller from the bereavement list and designated left-handed pitcher Adam Kolarek for assignment.

Miller, 32, missed three games while on the bereavement list. On the campaign, he is 1-0 with a 2.57 ERA (8 ER/28.0 IP) and 29 strikeouts in 24 games. He has allowed 11 hits in 28 innings, holding hitters to a .118 batting average against. He is in his 11th season in the Major Leagues with St. Louis (2012-14), Atlanta (2015), Arizona (2016-18), Texas (2019), Chicago (2021), Pittsburgh (2021), San Francisco (2022) and Los Angeles (2023) and he is a combined 39-58 with a 4.15 ERA (372 ER/806.0 IP) and 673 strikeouts in 191 games (132 starts). He was signed by the Dodgers on December 1, 2022.

Kolarek, 34, pitched 1.1 innings with the Dodgers, striking out two batters on Sunday afternoon. He had appeared in 21 games for Triple-A Oklahoma City, posting an 0-3 mark with a 2.18 ERA (5 ER/20.2 IP) and 12 strikeouts. He has pitched in the Majors parts of seven seasons with Tampa Bay (2017-19), Los Angeles (2019-2020, 2023) and Oakland (2021-22) and he is a combined 11-4 with a 3.73 ERA (60 ER/144.2 IP) and 96 strikeouts. The former Maryland Terrapin was originally drafted by the New York Mets in the 101h round of the 2010 First Year Player Draft.

  48. I don’t see that many games, but it seems that everytime I see Taylor up he just is looking for fastball. So Clevinger just throws him two off speed pitches. Center cut, like batting practice pitches and he misses by a mile and of course strikes out on the third pitch in the dirt. Then that confused look on his face.

  49. Rojas looking a little iffy at shortstop lately. Shortened range, weak throws to first and bad decisions. I wonder if his hamstring is bothering him or if he’s just worried about it. Maybe just in a slight slump…? ehhh never mind

Happy birthday Bear……. Happy birthday to you…. Happy birthday to you

  50. Today’s game is coming to an end on Wednesday, June 14, and I note that unlike AF (who certainly knows more than I do) I think reliable relievers are dealing with pitchers.
I see a drop in Freddy’s production (he looks sick) and our relief is pitiful (ninth inning). Well, we’ll see what happens later.

  51. With JD< Betts and Mookie not producing. getting runs was going to be a problem. But, sorry, Roberts should have never sent Almonte back out for a second inning. Vesia proved once again that he still cannot put hitters away, and he hits a guy with two strikes on him. Right now, this bullpen SUCKS big time. New blood is needed, at least some pitchers who can put hitters away.

  52. The pitching remains bad, and now Betts/Freeman/JDM have collectively cooled at the plate.

Since May 16, the Dodgers have stumbled into quicksand, and can’t seem to get out.

  53. Damn, i tuned out after 6 thinking it was in the bag. If I was GM I’d have watched till the end.

  54. Let’s face the facts, this is not a very good Dodger team. Not one of AF’s and BG’s better efforts.
