26 Innings of Baseball: Nobody Won.

May 1, 1920. In the city of Boston, the police were uneasy in the murky morning mist. Between intermittent showers, they stood with shoulders hunched against the chilly air as they trudged out in extra details, alert to the morning headlines, “Guard against Bolshevik uprisings here. As it turned out, the only battle that day took place at the local ball field as the Bostons, and the Brooklyns battled for 26 innings and ended up tied. It still stands as the longest game in major league history.

Leon Cadore

On the mound, that day for Uncle Robbie’s Brooklyn team was Leon Cadore. The 28-year-old Cadore was in his 4th full season in the big leagues. He would post a 15-14 mark that year, helping Brooklyn win the NL pennant. His mound opponent was Joe Oeschger. Always described as jovial, Oeschger was in the beginning of what for him, was a resurgent season. He had finished 4-4 in 1919, playing for three teams, the Phils, Giants, and then Boston. He and Cadore had met 10 days earlier, and Cadore outlasted him, 1-0 in 11 innings. Brooklyn was led by their star outfielder, Zack Wheat. Manager George Stalling’s team was not nearly that talented. They would finish in 7th place in the NL that year with a 60-92-1 record.

Joe Oeschger

It was drizzling when the umpire, Bill McCormick, yelled, “Play ball”. Ivy Olsen, the Robins leadoff hitter, stepped into the box. But the rain stopped abruptly after the first inning, and the crowd settled in to watch the game. Three more scoreless innings would pass. In the fifth inning, Brooklyn’s catcher, Ernie Krueger, worked a walk. Cadore then bounced one back to Oeschger, but he had the ball pop out of his hand, and his only play was to first. Krueger then scored when Olsen singled over Rabbit Maranville’s head.

In the sixth, Boston’s right fielder, Wally Cruise, tripled off of the fence in right-center field. Holke then hit a ball over third base that looked like a hit, but Wheat came flying in and made a shoestring catch and almost doubled Cruise off at third. But then Tony Boeckel lined a single to center, scoring Cruise. The score was tied 1-1.

It was cold and damp, and there was the wind blowing in from the Charles River just beyond center field. It cut down balls that could have been hits, into harmless outs. The crowd huddled together in the cold as the double string of zeros continued to grow. Both of the pitchers were very careful since they knew one mistake could cost them the win.

The harder the players tried to get hits, the easier it was for the pitchers to get them out. In the ninth, however, Boston loaded the bases with two outs. Maranville was on third. Charley Pick hit a hard grounder that Olsen pounced on; he tried to tag Ray Powell but missed, then he threw to first just in time to get Pick. Meanwhile, Maranville crossed the plate, but umpire Eugene Hart ruled that Powell had run out of the baseline, so the run was invalid.

The zeros kept piling up until in the 17th inning, when a New York Times reporter noticed that the zeros were extending beyond the scoreboard. Brooklyn finally got to Oeschger in the 17th and had the bases loaded with one out. Wheat was on third. Elliott hit a grounder back to the pitcher, who threw to C Hank Gowdy for the force. Gowdy’s throw to first went wild, and Holke barely knocked it down. Ed Konetchy tried to score from second. Holke threw to Gowdy, who threw himself across the plate, meeting Konetchy’s spikes with his bare hand.

The zeros kept piling up. When they hit the 23rd inning, they broke the NL record. When they hit 25, they broke the Major League record. When the 26th inning was done, Umpire Bill McCormick surveyed the darkening skies. Ivy Olsen, guessing his intent, ran up to him and spoke, ” Wait one more inning! I want to tell my grandchildren I played the equivalent of three nine-inning games in one day.“Not without a miner’s lamp.” snapped McCormick. He raised his hands, calling the game because of darkness.

The line score read Brooklyn 1-9-2 Boston 1-15-2. Only two Brooklyn hitters had more than one hit, Wheat, and 3B, Jimmie Johnston. They had no extra-base hits. Boston had a couple of doubles and a triple. The entire game took 3 hours and 50 minutes and was played before 4500 intrepid fans. The Robins left Boston the next day on a train. They then lost a 13-inning game to the Phillies that afternoon. Monday, they were back in Boston, where they lost in 19 innings. In 58 hours, they lost two and had a tie. The game would be finished later in the season, with the Braves getting the win. But Brooklyn went to the World Series, so that had to be some consolation. Oeschger would continue his resurgence the next season, winning 20 games. But he never won in double figures after 1921. He finished his career with Brooklyn in 1925, going 1-2 for a career mark of 82-116. Leon Cadore pitched until 1924, finishing his career with the Giants. He won 13 in 1922 but also never reached double figures again. He finished with a career 68-72 record.

26 innings of baseball. The longest MLB game ever in terms of innings played. There have been games time-wise in the modern era that are much longer. In 1974, the Cardinals and Mets played 25 innings, with the Cards getting the win. In 1984, the White Sox and Brewers also played 25, with the Sox prevailing. That game took 8 hours and 6 minutes. The Cards-Mets tiff took seven hours 23 minutes. The longest 9-inning game timewise was a Yankee win at Boston in 2006, which took four hours 45 minutes. NL record is four hours 30 minutes by the D-Backs and Rockies in 2016 and the Phils and Pirates in 2018.

Both the Brooklyn Dodgers and the L.A. version have 22-inning wins. Brooklyn beat the Pirates 6-5 in Brooklyn in 1917, and LA beat Montreal 1-0 in Montreal in 1989.

Keith Law’s Top 60

See what I have been telling you?

  3. Look how much Vargas jumped.
  4. Don’t count Pages out

  1. Nice write up, Bear! What a game! There will NEVER EVER be one like that.

So, finally deadline day is here. Will the Dodgers make a trade for Soto or not ?
The more I read and hear the more I think they will. With SD getting Hader and making a push for Soto plus getting back Tatis jr. they would be a hard out in the playoffs.
Just hoping we can hold on to Miller and Cartaya and not include Lux.

Good win yesterday. Heaney giving 4 solid innings on his way back. Bullpen with the exception of that homer off Martin was exceptionally. Even Bickford.

    Go Dodgers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. The way Soto has been hitting this season, it doesn’t scare me, and Hader, well, he’s not the same as other seasons, I think his ERA is higher than Kimbrel, only if they are winning it might be difficult to have to face him in the 9 inning…

SD is not the one to worry about!

I’m more concerned about Muncy, Bellinger, Taylor, Kershaw, Kimbrel, Roberts and the rest of the DODGERS team.

  3. I expect the Dodgers to acquire Soto, but I don’t think it’s necessary. I also expect one of Miller or Cartaya to be included in the deal and possibly Outman going out as well. Don’t think the Nats will want to take on CT3’s contract so he’s not an option to be included, but I can see a cost-controlled player like Lux to be included in the deal. I think the deal might look something like this:

Miller, Outman, Knack, Vargas, Bruns or Grove and Lux for Soto. Like I said, I don’t want to see it, but if Soto helps win a WS all will be forgotten about the talent we gave up to get him.

To name just a few in the last several years the Astros’ got Verlander, the Cubs got Chapman, the Royals got Cueto and Zobrist, the Giants got Peavy and Pence on their drive to the WS. All had to give up some good talent to get the veteran who put them over the top and if the Dodgers hoist a WS trophy this November and have Soto for at least two more years it will be worth it.

    T-minus 10 hours and counting.

    1. If it has to be Miller or Cartaya I would give Miller.
Cartaya IMHO will be a certain future All Star with a sky high ceiling. Miller looks a bit inconsistent and he is already 24 years old. Also the injury risk that comes with throwing as hard as he does should not understimated. We have seen it with WB and May and many others. TJ is always just one pitch away.
Giving up Lux would really hurt as well. A 6 for 1 trade IMHO is too much. Substitute Lux with Busch and I am good with it.

      Go Dodgers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

  4. Dodgers Interested In Pablo Lopez
By Mark Polishuk | August 1, 2022 at 8:40pm CDT

Reports from earlier this week suggested the Marlins were “no longer dismissing calls” (in the words of Barry Jackson and Craig Mish of the Miami Herald) about Pablo Lopez’s availability, and thus it isn’t surprising that the aggressive Dodgers have reached out. Jack Harris of the Los Angeles Times reports that Lopez is among the many players the Dodgers have discussed as tomorrow’s trade deadline looms.

The Twins and Cardinals have also been linked to Lopez in trade rumors, and given Lopez’s value as both an immediate rotation boost and a longer-term answer, it’s probably safe to guess that just about every contender has checked in with Miami general manager Kim Ng. Of course, since Lopez is controlled via arbitration through the 2024 season, he has a ton of value to the Marlins as well, particularly since Miami has enough talent on the roster that they’re surely aiming for a return to contention in 2023.

That means that if the Marlins did move Lopez, it would very likely be for players who are ready to contribute in the big leagues right away, as opposed to just intriguing prospects. Since the asking price for Lopez is sure to be huge, not many teams could necessarily meet the Marlins’ demands….but the Dodgers could certainly be one of those clubs, given their deep farm system.

  5. Wow, great memory…thanks OB.

Only 3 hours and 50 minutes for 26 innings. Many games today are that long in only 9 innings. Amazing.

Did I miss something? How many innings did each starting pitcher pitch? It appears one was pitching in the 16th inning…

    TM

  6. I’m having trouble trying to say that name in my head. I can only come up with Oysh-gerr and I’ve never heard that one before. I’m sure I got it wrong.

  7. What a game. Thanks Bear. Outman starting to remind me of Bellingers call up. Just too good to send back. How fun would it be to be a fly on AF’s wall today. What he’s willing to give up and what Washington wants. I think it would take Lux, Cartaya, Miller, Pages plus 2 more in the 10-20 range. I think that’s too rich for AF’s blood.

    1. I think that’s an overpay by quite a long shot. I don’t see them getting more than one of Lux, Cartaya and Miller. I think Vargas or Busch, Miller, White and Pages is better than anyone else has to offer. That’s three top 5 prospects and a major leaguer. Even that is probably an over pay. 2 top 5 and 2 top 10 plus a major leaguer is probably the best they can hope for.

White, Pages, Pepiot, Vargas, Knack or Stone and let them pick from anyone under the 20 spot. That would be quite the haul. They would have 3/5ths of a rotation and two can’t miss bats.

The thing that really bugs me about a Soto trade is that it almost certainly will include Busch or Vargas, the two positions we’ll need to fill over the next couple of years.

If we keep Vargas, maybe Mookie can slide over to second next year when Trea bolts. Vargas, Lux, Mookie, Freeman in the infield and Outman/Thompson, Belli and Soto in the Outfield?

  8. I’m a little apprehensive and nervous about a Soto trade. I don’t want to give up too much. And by too much, I mean Lux, Miller, Cartaya. and possibly May. I would also hate to give up a package like Miller, Cartaya, Busch and Vargas.

Heaney is still really dirty relying basically on two pitches, unless you count that single changeup he threw last night. It’s amazing to watch. The fastball wasn’t all that fast, just one over 94 MPH. The slider is absolutely deadly.

What a weird game for the bullpen. 5 innings, one hit and one run on a Chris Martin homer, 1 K courtesy of Caleb Ferguson, no walks.

Who needs Soto when you’ve got The Caveman!?!? A single, a double and a walk with two more runs scored. He got pretty lucky with the double, hell it hit Yaz’s glove, right in the palm. Just 78 MPH off the bat. Makes up for Belli who hits the ball harder in 3 AB’s and has nothing to show for it.

What happened to Logan Webb? He’s really overrated. Like most of the Giants last year, they cumulatively had a miracle season last year by having just about everyone punch over their weight. Maybe Farhan isn’t the genius everyone thought he was. Maybe Kapler isn’t the genius everyone thought he was. They should be packing bags and posting the “For Sale” sign right about now as they dropped under 500 and their top prospects are at the lower levels of the minors. They won’t have anything going on for at least a few more years.

So far, the Yankees are winning the trade deadline. They needed Montas as Severino is now out for most likely the end of the year having been transferred to the 60 day IL. They also added a couple of bullpen arms and a good contact bat in Benintendi to solidify their outfield.

The Padres traded away yet another starting pitcher that was once one of their top prospects. Prospect rankings seemed to over exaggerate the Padres stacked farm system from a few years ago.

The Braves and Astros were busy overnight. The Braves added Robbie Grossman from the Tigers for some outfield depth as well as Jake Odorizzi from the Astros for the other Will Smith. The Astros nabbed Christian Vazquez from the Bo-Sox.

The Pirates sold high on Jose Quintana shipping him to the Cardinals who desperately need starting pitching.

    1. I don’t have any insight as to how the Soto situation may work out and I will leave in AF’s hands. Nor do I have the knowledge of Dodger prospects like many on LADT do. One thing I have learned in the last couple of days is that if James Outman is the 17th ranked Dodger prospect as I have read, they have one helluva prospect pipeline….

      1. Perspective eh? He’s kinda lucky right now with a couple of those doubles should have been caught by better outfielders or two steps to center in positioning. But, he’s making a ton of contact and is a gifted defender. I would take a 270 BA 330 OBP 20 homers and a few stolen bases and be happy if he can play anywhere in the outfield. Kinda like a faster Todd Hollandsworth with a better arm.

        1. BP –

At 76 years-old, one better have some perspective – right or wrong! But, if I am a GM in a rebuild situation looking for major league ready prospects, I would be be scrutinizing Dodger prospects closely. In fact, the GM of the Nats has some very recent experience with Josiah Gray and Kiebert Ruiz. If he is a satisfied customer he may come back….just thinking!

          1. I probably wasn’t clear. Perspective, No 17 comes up and makes a big impact. How good are all of those guys ahead of him?

Josiah Gray is still pretty young at just 24 years old. He’s not too bad considering this is his first full year. Keibart Ruiz is just 23 and is at the least a solid hitting, good defensive catcher that should get better. Gerardo Carrillo looks like a bust already as does Donovan Casey.

  9. So far I don’t see any of the players who have been traded as game changers with the exception of Montas and Christian Vazquez the others have bad to mediocre numbers including Chris Martin the new Dodgers.
This one looks like it will be the worst and most boring trade deadline in numbers, quality and importance that I remember

  10. By three o’clock your time, at least those of you in L.A., all will be revealed. ESPN has a trade deadline show, and pretty sure MLB.TV does too. Not going to worry about things over which I have no control aka trades. Well Will Smith will only get to face Will Smith again this year if the Dodgers meet the Astros in the World Series. Smith dealt to Houston for Odorizzi. Cardinals traded for Quintana. Their staff is really beat up. I wonder how the Rangers are feeling about all the money they spent so they could be 10 games under .500 after 102 games. Looks like the Angels will move Syndergaard before the deadline. He is owed about 7.5 mil for the rest of the year.

  11. Hearing Morejon, Wood, Susana, Hassell III, Abrams & Merrill for Soto, Bell & Finnegan.

    As per Hector Gomez.

That’s a ludicrous offer. I just learned Susana is a 6’-6” 18 year old up to 101 mph.

    1. Hassell OF is 20 and at High A, drafted 8 overall in 2020 and is the Padres No. 1 overall prospect.
Wood OF is a second rounder 19 year old in low A the 3rd best prospect in the Padres system.
Merrill SS is a 19 YO single A shortstop and 1st round pick ranked 4th in the Padres system.
Susana P is an 18 YO in Rookie ball and was the top international pitcher taken in the 21-22 international class and is ranked 14th in their system.
Abrams – SS is another 1st round pick and was a top prospect, but has since graduated from prospect status. He hasn’t done much in his first year as a pro, but he’s just 21 years old.
Morejon is not a very good pitcher. A left-handed swingman, looks like trade filler.

This looks very light on Major League ready talent. A lot of risk with a bunch of teenagers and a history of not drafting particularly well. Not much pitching in here either plus they want a good relief pitcher and another very good hitter back? This looks like a joke!

      1. Agreed.Compared to what is talked about what they want from us this is a joke.
Miller already in AA, Vargas and Busch at AAA, Lux already a top ten hitter in the NL, May already a proven top of the rotation starter.

        Go Dodgers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  12. That’s a lot of baseball.

Did anyone stay until the end?

Great win for the Dodgers last night. Not only did Outman get on base every time up, but he made a really good catch in left.

So the Dodgers have a two prong approach today, according to Jack Harris of the LA Times. Juan Soto, obviously, and Miami right hander Pablo Lopez. They are also interested in Marlins reliever Anthony Bass.

Harris also points out there has been growing optimism in the Dodgers organization the last few days regarding acquiring Soto.

It’s funny, but I have mixed reactions to the potential trade. The prospect cost will be really high.I won’t be disappointed if the Dodgers don’t make a big deal.

Maybe I value the prospects too high.

No question Soto would make the Dodgers better for the remainder of this year and the next two. It would also keep him from going to San Diego and Brandon Gomes said the organization can do a big deal and still have a strong system.

    Good write-up today, Bear.

  13. Bob Nightengale reports
James Outman is the first Dodger to reach base 7 or more times in his first 2 games since Casey Stengel in 1912.
I think Lux should be asking for his battling order changed back to 9th.

  14. The Pablo Lopez thing is fascinating to me. He’s legit, and he’s getting better.

On our team, he’d be a 4, which is absurd for his talent. I would give up Bobby Miller for him (though I’d rather trade Pepoit and others before Miller). Bobby Miller’s ceiling is probably that equal to Pablo Lopez, so I’ll take the sure thing now.

    1. IMHO Millers ceiling is a Nr. 1 starter. Lopez as you said a Nr. 3 or 4. We have enough of Nr. 3 and 4.
It will be a wild ride the next few hours.
That offer by SD for Soto posted above is tough to beat.

      Go Dodgers!!!!!!!!!!1

      1. yes, on our team he’d be a 4. But in reality, he’s closer to a 2. Miller best case would be a 2 as well.

        1. Best case for Miller is the best pitcher in baseball. He has a plus, plus FB, Plus Slider and Change and a curve that can become plus to go along with a 6′ 5″ frame. His worst case is probably a 2. – Noah Syndergaard.

  15. Twins get closer Lopez from the Orioles according to ESPN.

The Baltimore Orioles are contending for a wild-card spot this season but that hasn’t stopped them from acting like sellers at the trade deadline. A day after trading Trey Mancini to the Houston Astros, the Orioles are finalizing a trade to send closer Jorge Lopez to the Minnesota Twins, sources told ESPN’s Jeff Passan.

The Orioles will receive four minor league pitchers: left-hander Cade Povich, right-handed reliever Yennier Cano, right-hander Juan Nunez and left-hander Juan Rojas, sources tell ESPN.

Lopez has 19 saves and is 4-6 with a 1.68 ERA. He has 54 strikeouts in 48⅓ innings pitched.

    Nice return for the Orioles

    Go Dodgers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  16. Morosi reporting the Nats are in the process of calling up some minor league players to the major league level…a precursor to the Soto trade.

    Padres, Dodgers or Cardinals?

  17. Acording with MLB Trade Rumors, Padres are going ahead of Dodgers, raigh now

  18. The Padres and Nationals are in agreement on a deal that sends Soto and first baseman Josh Bell to San Diego, Morosi reports. San Diego will send back rookie shortstop C.J. Abrams, top outfield prospect Robert Hassell III, right-hander Jarlin Susana and top outfield prospect James Wood, according to Morosi.

      1. For Both Soto and Bell that is not much of a return.#
heck, even for Soto alone it is far less than some suggested the Dodgers would have to give up.
Lot of prospects not higher than A ball .

        Go Dodgers!!!!!

      2. Not sure why you say this…if I’m the Padres I absolutely try to make this deal. It’s the only way they can compete with us and they can turn around and trade Soto in a few years and recoup some of those lost prospects. They are much improved team right now and they have these pieces in place for a few years. We didn’t need to do this but they absolutely did.

        1. He is a free agent in 2 1/2 years. So if they are going to trade him and get anything in return, it would have to be before than. I doubt they can meet his demands in free agency. He is not going to be as cheap as Tatis was.

    1. 10:57am: Eric Hosmer is headed to the Nationals as a means of offsetting salary, reports Joel Sherman of the New York post (on Twitter). McKensie Gore is also in that deal.

  19. Very nice article Old Bear. I’ve read about that game a few times over the years and it still amazes me. I don’t remember how many pitches were thrown, but it was in the hundreds. Maybe you have that info in your research notes. One thing you didn’t mention was that Boston had Sunday off because at that time the law didn’t allow MLB to be played on Sundays. While Brooklyn was riding trains and playing an extra inning game on Sunday, Boston was just relaxing. Man, what a rough weekend for the Dodgers (Robins).

    1. Accurate records for that game not available as they did not keep precise records for games in those days. But it was estimated that Cadore made 360 pitches in his 26 inning and Oeschger made 316. Both would be records. By the way, Cadore said his arm was never the same after that game.

  20. Dodgers would will go to Pablo López?
Dogers needs Cody, Muncy and JT to wake up, now more than ever

  21. This imho is the best thing that Soto is not a Dodger. Not worth the high cost. AF certainly drove the price to the moon for the Padre’s!

  22. This is going to be one intense NL playoffs come October, wow!

LA, SD, NYM, ATL, StL. Wow

  23. I’m glad we didn’t mortgage the farm for Soto. The NL West will continue to go through LA even with the acquisition of Soto. Their big three of Machado, Tatis and Soto are good but I’ll take our big three of TT, Mookie and Freddie any day and twice on Sunday.

  24. 10:57am: Eric Hosmer is headed to the Nationals as a means of offsetting salary, reports Joel Sherman of the New York post (on Twitter).

  25. So, in the end, the Trade Simulator is way off on Soto’s value. The Padres got a huge shot in the arm for their offense and was able to unload a bad Hosmer contract. Soto will fit right in with Machado and Tatis as the most ridiculous players in the game, as far as causing scenes on the field goes.

I honestly don’t know WTF the Nats are thinking on this one. Gore is 23, injured and wasn’t very good this year, he’s no sure thing. Abrams was probably called up too early at just 21, he’s struggled so far, another no sure thing. The other three are all about as young as you can get, all not sure things.

In the end, it looks like Soto was worth 4 top prospects, (They got 5, but had to include Bell) certainly not the six that people were predicting. This is a good trade for the Padres, no doubt about it. And it’s the best chance they have at competing with the Dodgers this year. Soto, Machado, Tatis and Bell is a very good middle of the order.

    1. Good points Bulldog!
This trade improves the Padres drastically for 3 years. Soto is 23 and a top 10 player in the mlb. And the cost to get Soto and Bell seems light. Boras has huge conflict of interest here with Hosmer but doesn’t mind sticking it to the Dodgers. I would love to see the last Dodger offer. But looks like a missed opportunity for Dodgers for next 3 years.
The Padres have added Soto, Bell, Hader and soon Tatis to an already good team. The Dodgers path in NL playoffs will be extremely difficult, especially if Degrom is healthy.
The Dodgers are constructed as a great regular season team with a great future. It will be interesting to see what Dodgers do now, if anything. The best they can do is get healthy Buehler, May and Treinen back.
But as of now the odds of Dodgers winning WS have dropped.
We need to enjoy the great success of the team and remember the postseason is a crapshoot.

  26. I said it before and I say it today: Padres don’t matter!

I care about the Dodgers players and not about the other teams, the players from other teams are the ones who care about the Dodgers!

That money can and should be invested in Turner.

This forum is about Dodgers, not about other teams, Soto was not and will not be the only player traded, do not give it more importance than it could have, it’s done, turn the page and move on.

  27. Hosmer has 10 team no-trade clause, with Nats on list. He hasnt signed off but cant see that holding up trade. Hope AF has something up his sleeve. usually doesnt get upstaged.

  28. Padres lineup has gotten a LOT better with this trade. Make no mistake about it, this team is armed and dangerous for a run at the WS title not only for this year but the next 3 years too.
All three of their big guns still very young , Hader the stopper in the pen plus a strong rotation. And to get Bell on top , man oh man, that completely has changed their team in a span of 24 hours.
Say what you will about Preller and the Padres but he got balls.

    Go Dodgers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  29. We don’t get Juan Soto and I feel pretty good about that. I still think the Dodgers make a move or two.

All these prospects just to send Eric Hosmer out of San Diego. He still has to agree to the trade, according to Ken Rosenthal. Wow. Hosmer in the driver’s seat. The signing that just keeps on giving.

Short term, next two or three years, this deal helps the Padres, maybe even puts them into the World Series. But the Dodgers are still the class of the NL. This season and well into the future.

    Now, extend Trea Turner.

  30. I would rather the Dodgers go get JD Martinez, or Ian Happ for a lot cheaper than try to swoop in and disrupt the Padres trade.

I did a post about Sot’s value a couple of weeks ago and pegged him around 83.55 as his true value. The Padres traded away 108.30 in order to get him and Josh Bell. I was way closer to his real value than the Trade Simulator in the end.

Just thought I’d pat myself on the back on that one.

The Dodgers could have traded Cartaya, Busch and Miller to get to roughly the same value. I’m glad they didn’t.

    1. Agreed. But would have liked it better had Soto not been traded to SD.#
That team in the last 24 hours has gone from a contender to a co-favorit for a WS title.
No denying it. Dodgers better see Belli, Muncy and JT start to play up to their capabilites.
And they need Kimbrel to play like the closer he once was or find another option.

      Go Dodgers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    1. Funny that Hosmer is being a dick about it. Dude, you do realize that you aren’t going to play if they do the deal anyways, right?

      This is becoming funny.

I wonder what AF has planned to answer this deal.

      1. I don’t blame Hosmer at all for rejecting trade to Nats. It is in his contract and he will at least use the no trade to get more money before going to the worst team in baseball.

  31. No worries about The Madres. They still have to win games. The pressure is in them, not us.

  32. The #1 or the #2 seed in playoffs?

As baseball will NOT reseed I really think its better to get the #2 seed in the NL.

Would you rather play Brewers Vs Cards winner or Braves vs SD winner???

As it stands right now the #2 seed will play winner of Brewers and the #6 seed; whoever that may be. The 1 Seed would play ATL or SD, as it stands today.

The key is obviously to get the first round bye but as it stands right now I’d take that #2 seed vs the #1. Of course getting HFA in the NLCS would be nice too.

We should have had it last year based on record. I do think Travel was a factor in that series as well as Scherzer being a wuss.

    Just some food for thought…

  33. If you read how Keith Law ranked the TOP 4 Dodger Prospects (all 4 in the TOP 36), you should understand why AF doesn’t have to do anything.

  34. Great write up Bear. Always enjoy your work.
    * If the Soto to SD reports are true, I’m delighted. Just so it ain’t us!
now back to Dodger Baseball for now:
    * Watching Freddie go the other way is a hitting clinic every day. Maybe the math still says it works but I can’t figure out why teams continue to shift the guy. I like Jessica’s report about how he takes BP. He never hits on the field where he could be enticed to get infatuated with hitting balls over the fence. Instead he works of the far less glamorous skill of hitting balls where he wants to; like grounders right at the make believe shortstop who isn’t there. Why does no one else learn that? Instead we’ll get rule changes. And I think BP on the field, the Old Fashion Way, is practically useless this day and age any way. But that’s a conversation for another time.
    * Many years ago during my playing days, I had the great fortune to meet and watch a 60 year old man take BP. The Cardinals roving hitting instructor was Joe “Ducky” Medwick. Joe had won the MVP and Triple Crown with the Red Birds in 37 and was a Dodger in 1940. His story is interesting and something Bear might report on someday. Anyway, Ducky would occasionally get in the cage as a 60 year old and take some swings. He would hit 2 over third, 2 over short, second and first 2 gappers to each side. He hit line drives placed around the diamond and called it a deal after 12 swings. A piece of bat control art, it was. And it’s etched in my memory forever.
    * I haven’t paid attention since he was a White Sox but Yermin Mercedes is a beast. Just a big man. He needs a bigger uni but he isn’t just a fat guy. He has some guns and thighs. I wouldn’t want to take him on in a football game.
    * Nice to see Muncy run into one. While the results aren’t there yet, he’s swinging better.
    * Despite the dinger to Flores, I thought Chris Martin looked okay. He sure is tall. He comes in with 6 reported pitches. If he sticks around long I bet he won’t have 6. More like 3. Pick the 3 best; One that goes left. One that goes right. And one that drops, stops or hops.
    * Always nice to beat the Giants.

  35. Maybe I’m high (leftover from yesterday). Maybe I’m too positive, or being a homer.

But I think all we need is for 1 of Muncy or Belly to get hot the last 2 months and into Oct, and we will steamroll thru October. The rest of the lineup has gone crazy without those two helping out much.

  36. J.D Martinez and maybe John Screiber would be more than fine, but I doubt Boston wants to trade Schreiber, if not, then Eovaldi? And voila, that’s all it takes!

They would definitely not cost high level prospects and could help a lot, experience and good numbers, nothing spectacular, but effective!

Eovaldi could be a good closer in the playoffs, at least more reliable than Kimbrel

  37. One thing this tells me :
dodgers must be reall sky high on Cartaya, Miller , Vargas that they would not even include them in a potential trade for Soto. If you do not include them in a trade for Soto you will not include them for anybody else too. Exception maybe Ohtani .

    Go Dodgers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  38. I love the Padres! Super fun.

Between their aggressiveness, and the Braves resigning of Riley and the corresponding moves. Both the Padres and Braves should be a example for other mid and small market teams about how to be well-run and aggressive.

The Angels, Reds, Pirates and White Sox should be ashamed.

And spare me the “what championships have they won” silliness. As Brisbee wrote:
The stands are full. The fans are invested. It’s the only sports team in a city of 1.4 million people, and it’s all everyone can talk about. They’ve become more exciting. Reducing sports to a binary championship-or-bust experience is missing so much.

  39. They may want to keep prospects, first because they’re so good and also because they’re so much cheaper, so they can continue to pay established stars millionaire salaries, and that could mean Trea will be a Dodger for several years.

Trea, Betts, Freeman, Smith and possibly Bellinger and Muncy recover at least a little of the level they have had, and Lux is getting better and better every day, this lineup will be much more powerful than others, which only have 3 or 4 strong players, only They would look for a LF or give Thompson a chance for more continuity, or Outman himself, and Taylor to return to his utility job.

I don’t know why, but I feel that many are worried, feeling as if SD were already champion today, come on, first they have to play the games, then qualify for the playoffs, then beat not only the Dodgers, but also the Mets, Braves, Cardinals, then to Houston, Yankees, that is, a single player to another team and many already feel defeated

How sad I am for those who already feel defeated, long before a single inning has been played tonight.

  40. Not sure if anyone asked, but the Trade Simulator was pretty good on the Soto deal too:

    171 vs. 147.

    Their editor chimed in:

UPDATED DEAL: Minor underpay by San Diego. This is more reasonable.

We’ve removed Hosmer temporarily because he hasn’t approved the deal from his side (he has a no-trade clause that includes the Nationals). If he is included, the Padres will cover the $39M he’s owed from 2023-25. Since we had Hosmer at -35, that’s a net positive addition of $4M to their package.

If he does not approve it, the deal will still go through without him, at which point the $4M net will be removed. Wouldn’t change the parameters of the deal substantially either way, from a value standpoint.

Personally, I still think it’s surprising the Nats thought this offer was the best one, but at least it’s reasonable now.

  41. I for one am very happy with the news coming down the pipe today.

Don’t want Soto and the money it would take to pay him…..so now we can give it to Tre Turner.

And I’m very excited to see all these hot prospects you guys have been touting and following can have their chance to wear Dodgers Blue. Especially glad not to trade any of our young pitchers plus James Outman.

For the record, I don’t worry about other teams…they have a right to improve too. Be glad there isn’t a salary cap like there is one for football or hockey. Congrats to the Padres and Yankees for making moves to improve their chances to make it to the big dance. I hope you both watch LA hoist the trophy high again though.

    TM

  42. Soon to be 80, I have been around the block a few times! A Dodger fan since 1951, I still remember that year & the statement “The Giants is dead!”. Yes we have a big lead on SD, but there are still lots of games to be played. I don’t want to have to use that statement from the early 1950’s , “Wait til next year!”. Keep the prospects, play with what you’ve got.

      1. Lots of wrong answers below:

        1. It’s a bet that one of Gallo/Muncy/Bellinger breaks out of slump?
        2. Because you need as many three-true-outcome players as possible?
        3. Beeter is excess inventory? So, it’s a bet on upside with limited downside?
        4. Dodgers believe they can fix the massive hole in his swing?
        5. An upgrade (at least defensively? Maybe?) on the Jake Lamb roster spot?
        6. So McCullough could write:
The Dodgers and Padres each acquired a two-time All Star outfielder today.

      2. Why? He’s so bad he’ll make Muncy look good.

There’s got to be more to the story.

      1. Well, if Gallo somehow mirculously rediscovers his form with the Rangers he would be a steal.###
Dodgers making a bet on lighning in a bottle with Gallo.##

        Go Dodgers!!!!!!

        1. If they can’t fix Muncy or Belli, what are the chances that they’re gonna cure a guy that’s never had more than 103 hits is a season? This is like a bad dream. What a waste of a roster spot.

          1. The only possible positive answer to this is that Gallo’s downturn isn’t related to an injury like those two.

Beeter was having a down year and, again, is surplus, but this is a head-scratcher.

  43. I don’t remember how that sentence goes that Mark says: Some play chess while AF plays what? I don’t remember, but we all know that AF isn’t stupid, maybe it’s what he’s doing, playing chess while… Obviously Gallo isn’t the solution, simply because there’s nothing to solve, they brought him to LA for a reason… ..

    1. Calculated risk. If Gallo can regain his hitting form he showed with the Rangers he could be what Soler was for the Braves last season.##

      Go Dodgers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  44. Joey Gallo grew up
In Las Vegas so he’ll be coming home. He needs a reset and I think will do well for the Dodgers for not a lot of cost. Plays third, first and outfield. Pretty good move AF!

  45. He stated many times AF is playing chess while we play checkers. In all actuality AF plays a much more involved game than chess could ever be and we can only play like we’re playing checkers

    1. That would have been a mistake as well. Joey Gallo? I can’t can’t wait for Roberts bullshit explanation for this move.
He has a 44% career K rate. He fails to make contact via K or BB 53% of the time. All that to hit a home run every 16 ABs. Like mentioned above, I guess the Muncy and Bellinger struggles weren’t troublesome for the front office.

The Padres seemed to give up a heck of lot less than what was projected that the Dodgers were going to have to give up to get Soto. I’m happy that AF didn’t make the trade. Lopez in Miami looks intriguing. If we are to give up some prospects that might be the way to go.

  46. History has shown that time and again AF pulls a Head scratcher out of the water and we’re all surprised with the successful results.

    1. Uh, don’t forget how bad Gyorko and White were and a guy named Redding who stunk up the joint. Joey Gallo??? They need another under the Mendoza line left handed hitter like I need more weight. Excuse me, I am finding a bucket to puke in. This is no answer to what the Padres have done. Still 2 1/2 hours to go, but I way less optimistic than I was this morning.

      1. You forgot we already have the best team and getting a ton of guys back…..

We won the trade deadline last year, what did that get us? A guy that wouldnt take the ball in game 6….

        1. Correction, we have a very good team and maybe the best if everyone comes back healthy. This is not even the team they broke camp with. So many guys on the IL> and when 2 of your so called best regulars are down around the Mendoza line, your RBI leader is your SS in the two hole, and you have 2 retreads leading your rotation, you are clearly not the best, Your best pitcher starting wise is on the IL. Scherzer may have not been there for game 6. But neither was Kersh or Muncy. Ya can’t just blame Max. The whole team sucked in that series.

      2. They said the same thing about…

        Anderson, Heaney & Thompson.

        How’d that turn out?

      3. I think you mean “Reddick” the same name my ex had as her maiden name. Yes of course she got teased with that growing up; Kids can be cold blooded. In my 3rd grade we changed the lyrics to ‘Whistle While You Work’ that would probably hurt the feelings of the sweetheart teacher we had had she heard it.

    1. 10-30ish from what I can tell.

      The bad POV:
He is having a poor season in AA though.

      The good POV:
Really good prospects by metrics (spin rate)

  47. It’s been said that 3 other teams were interested in Gallo, Brewers, Padres and Rays. There must be SOMETHING of interest about Gallo.

    1. Beeter was rated 15th on the top 30 prospect list. He has a grade 60 curve. BTW Outman was rated 17th on the same list.

  48. Cano is also available. Pretty big day for Preller. Can’t believe he got gif of Hosmer! I’d love to know what AF’s best offer was.

  49. Gallo’s career line. .201/.301/.417 with 170 HR’s and 991 K’s in 8 seasons. He has never hit above .253 in his entire career. He did that in 2019. He has already struck out 106 times this season. just what they need, another whiff machine.

  50. I’m confused about acquiring Gallo, and paying his salary. He is a .201 lifetime hitter who hits some HRs but strikes out a lot.

Don’t we have enough guys like him in Cody and Max? Now we have 3 guys who can hit HRs but not bat over .200. What’s up with this?

If this guy choked under NY bright lights, it’s just as bright in LA.

Where does he possibly fit in? SMH

OH WELL, IN AF I TRUST, RIGHT?

    A bewildered,
    TM

      1. No way they trade Bellinger or Muncy, who at this point has very little trade value. Belli is the best defensive CF in the league. And this team needs his defense.

    1. Longo is back on the IL, I seriously doubt Farhan would do anything to strengthen his in division closest rival. He did just do LA a favor though. He traded Ruf to the Mets. Rodon is a lefty. Dodgers are lefty heavy in the starting rotation already with Urias, Anderson, Heaney and Kersh. Now if they can pry Lopez away from Miami, I am down with that. They still need a RH power bat.

  51. Mets are acquiring Darin Ruf From the SFGiants for JD Davis and prospects

Like that deal for the Mets.

    1. I like that deal for the Dodgers. Gets the RUF out of our hair. Phillies just got Robertson from the Cubs, they are also on the verge of getting Brandon Marsh from the Angels.

  52. Why Gallo? Maybe Bellinger on his way to Miami as part of a Lopez trade. Just off the top of my head. There’s no info that this is a possibility.

    Robertson to Philly….sorry Eric.

  53. And Heyman tweets that the Dodgers will pay the nearly $4 million remaining on Gallo’s 2022 salary. Head scratcher move. If we need a LH pinch hitter with power but who doesn’t strike out as much as Gallo we have Rios returning soon. I just don’t get this move, not just because Gallo sucks but because he will also take a position on the 26 man roster that needs to remain open for the return of CT3, Rios and potentially pushes Outman back to OKC.

Perhaps there is another move or two for AF but this one just makes no sense at all to me. Not impressed.

  54. I can’t believe it… Dodgers have a 12 game lead and yet there are people who think Dodgers have to answer to “what SD has done on this trade deadline”, really? Dodgers DON’T HAVE TO DO ANYTHING!

It’s the other teams that HAVE TO DO SOMETHING if they want to catch up with the Dodgers.

  55. Please tell me that is not all there is AF. Hard enough to swallow the extra large pill that is Joey Gallo’s weak ass stick.

    1. Man give it a rest not like we dont have the best club or anything….or not like we are getting a TON of guys back….

      1. Best club? Name me one player on this team that can hit homers as often as Judge. Yankees have played 2 more games than us, and are ahead in wins with 70. Don’t pooh pooh the opposition. Astros got better too. The GOOD thing is that the Dodgers are 12 ahead with 60 to play. Hard to make up that kind of ground. Pads only have 58 games to do it. But they also play LA 12 more times.

        1. You must be a lot of fun at parties. Holy Moly….

          Im not “poo pooing” anything.

We are the Dodgers I am a Dodger fan.

Why don’t you just give SD the trophy now I suppose…..

    2. Michael – a year ago we’d have been delighted with this pick up.

Let’s see what a change of scenery and some work with the Guru’s (that’s for you Eric!) can do.

Another deal to come I think.

      1. Remember we won the trade deadline last year……for a P that couldn’t take the ball in game 6….

        1. See ABOVE! Muncy was out. Urias had a tired arm as did Buehler, Kersh was out for the season. All the bats went silent except for Taylor. It wasn’t all on Scherzer who by the way closed the game 5 win over the Giants that got them there. Braves had a couple hitters get scorching hot.

          1. Kersh and Muncy were INJURED.

Diffference between being injures vs being “hurt”. Yes Braves got hot at the right time. I still think Scherzer could have taken that ball in game 6 on regular rest…..

          2. Scherzer had a tired arm. It happens to pitchers, I know Kersh and Muncy were injured. But give the Braves credit for how they played. Scherzer was ineffective in his first start against the Braves in game 2. But the bullpen lost that game. You weren’t in the Dodger clubhouse, so what you might think doesn’t matter. The point is, he could not go without risking a greater injury. Had they had more healthy starters, the outcome might have been different, but with a offense that wasn’t scoring, it did not matter. The inequity of the whole thing was that because they were the wild card, the Braves had home field advantage despite winning 16 fewer games. I also question playing their regulars that last game with Milwaukee when catching the Giants was not a given. And Muncy made a bad judgement call trying to catch that ball.

      2. I did not like Gallo then, I still don’t. He is a strikeout waiting to happen and LA has too many of those guys on the roster already.

  56. Old Bear, you responded to my comment by mentioning the stink moves AF made in the past. Most of those had some apparent reasoning behind them.
That’s why I figure there must be a pony somewhere under the Gallo manure pile. Don’t you think ?

  57. SD justo got Brandon Drury
Padres had been get all the treadline for theyself.

The next weekend serie is gonna be really fun to attend

    1. That’s for sure Daniel! They’ll probably be wearing name tags for the next couple of weeks. Still, it’s all on paper for the Padres right now. Their pitching is still lacking for a strong postseason. We all know (well, except for the Padres) that it’s all about pitching in the playoffs.

  58. Well, SD for sure is the deadline day winner. At least on paper.
If you can haul in Soto, Bell, Drury and Hader you can rightfully make that claim. Preller showed he has balls and guts putting all on the line and going all in.

Again , on paper, SD looks formidable. An absolute powerhouse. Lets see how it looks on the field.

    Go Dodgers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    1. And yet, will still lose the Division to LA and will still lose the WC to ATL…..bank on it….

    1. Do they have any players to play the game with? They have another one tonight. 😉

      1. They still have Yu Darvish…..ya know the guy we started in Game 7 of the WS. Kersh or Wood starts that game we probably win the 2017 WS….

        1. Only if they pitched a shutout. Dodgers did nothing on offense in that game.
Game 5 was the downfall. Big leads with Kersh going but the Asteriks knew what was coming.
Still makes me mad as hell when thinking about it. Just like SB 36 when the Cheatriots betrayed the Rams.

          Go Dodgers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  59. Wow, 2 really good relievers traded (Hader and Robertson) and the Dodgers didn’t get them. The only problem with Hader this year is too many homers given up in the amount of innings pitched. Instead Friedman adds Joey Gallo. Whatever. Unless there’s another move.

    1. All the Cubs got for Robertson because he is a rental was the number 26 prospect on the Phillies prospect list. That would have cost Freidman basically nothing.

  60. Gallo better not take Outman’s place….I will be pretty upset.

Rios better not take Outman’s spot…..I will still be pretty upset.

        1. LOL

Dodgers say the Jake Lamb trade is official. To Seattle for a player to be named later or cash

    1. Gallo will take that. I see no upgrade here unless Gallo returns to his form with the Rangers. We basically have the same player in Rios . ANd Lamb did play very well.
      Strange moves by AF.

      Go Dodgers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  61. Looks like we just dropped out Lopez sweepstakes, yanks still in
    Probably done for day

  62. Lamb to Mariners for cash. I think I’d rather keep Beeter and Lamb over Gallo and a few bucks.

  63. Well, there’s still time to make a deal, but I really don’t like Joey Gallo and I thought that Lamb was doing more than fine. Replacing Lamb’s bat with Gallo’s looks like a downgrade to me, but the bright side is that he’s a 2 time Gold Glove outfielder. At worst, he’s gonna go yard from time to time and play great defense. A very solid 4th outfielder, a Joc Pederson with a glove.

I’ll be disappointed if this is all we do, but it’s starting to look that way.

The Padres improved at several positions. They went from pretender to contender. The Braves weren’t as good as us last year, but they still beat us. The Giants weren’t as good, but they put us in a bad position by playing over their heads.

At the least, this makes the rest of the season way more exciting. We still have all of our prospects, so…

    1. I think AF sees him as a 4th outfielder. In that role he works because of his gold glove D. He can pinch hit and be a defensive replacement. Other than that it’s a Meh deal.

    1. Just saw that – now that is strange?

      Unless someone coming in…

      Bring back Rich Hill

      1. No thanks. Hill is over the Hill and has not been very good this season. Addition by subtraction seems to be the theme today. White, Lamb, Cleavinger all gone from roster. I have been watching ESPN’s trade deadline show. Last announced trade was Cardinal’s trading Bader to the Yankees for a pitcher. Deals can still be in the works as long as the paperwork was filed prior to 6 PM eastern time.

        1. “White, Lamb, Cleavinger all gone from roster.”

I think that’s what these moves are mostly about. Makes the juggling easier when the healthy guys come back, and at first glance I like the two pitchers the Dodgers got for White.

Great article today! You changed it up and a did more of a narrative, storytelling writing style!

  64. Still time for something to trickle in. 2 open 40 man spots and Alex Dejesus also traded with White.

  65. We are are currently carrying 3 of the 10 worst hitters in baseball, how can we win it all by doing that??

    1. You mean how can the team with the best record in baseball and who is leading the NL West by 12 games win it all?

I mean, I’d rather take the field but they gotta be considered the heavy favorite, no?

      1. Here. Let me help you.

“By now carrying three of the worst hitters in baseball, how can the Dodgers expect to maximize their WS winning odds against an already formidable array of teams that, in contrast to the Dodgers, significantly upgraded their rosters at the trade deadline?”

        1. Oh.

          Thanks?

Here let me rephrase my previous response:

“By now carrying three of the worst hitters in baseball, how can the Dodgers (who have the best record in baseball and who is/are leading the NL West by 12 games win it all) expect to maximize their WS winning odds against an already formidable array of teams that, in contrast to the Dodgers (who have a myriad of players coming back in addition to having the best record in baseball and who is/are leading the NL West by 12 games win it all), significantly upgraded their rosters at the trade deadline?”

I mean, I’d rather take the field but they gotta be considered the heavy favorite, no?

          1. “Heavy favorite?”

I mean, the Dodger are very very good. They might have one of the best Dodger winning percentages ever when the season is over. They are oozing depth.

I’d like to see what the plan is with Gallo, but I don’t see him as a significant improvement over the weak spots in the Dodger lineup. I think the relief corps, although good and with healthy players coming back, has a hole.

The Yankees were already a juggernaut and got a lot better, the Mets are getting DeGrom back and the Astros are solid top to bottom.

I would give the edge to the Yankees at this point, but maybe your nerd calculator says different.

  66. Now there are spots that could be filled internally on the major league roster. How about bringing up Stone or Vargas?

    1. Rarely does a player, much less a pitcher make the jump from AA straight to the majors. Stone is a starter. I doubt he makes the jump. They expect May, Taylor and Rios back very soon. They have 25 players on the roster for tonights game.

      1. If they don’t call Stone up shortly, it will be a shame, like Keith Law said:

“This guy is banging on the door of a big league rotation right now!

    2. I’m just read that Miguel Vargas is on his way to San Francisco to join the taxi squad.

  67. DODGERS ACQUIRE NICK FRASSO & MOISES BRITO

LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Dodgers acquired minor league pitchers Nick Frasso and Moises Brito from Toronto in exchange for right-handed pitcher Mitch White and minor league infielder Alex De Jesus.

Frasso, 23, was 0-0 with 0.74 ERA (3 ER/36.2 IP) and 57 strikeouts in 10 games between Single-A Dunedin and High-A Vancouver. He began the season with Dunedin, appearing in seven games, striking out 42 in 25.2 innings and allowing two runs. Since his promotion to High-A Vancouver, he has posted a 0.82 ERA (1 ER/11.0 IP) and 15 strikeouts. He has been with the Blue Jays for two seasons since being drafted in the fourth round of the 2020 First Year Player Draft out of Loyola Marymount and he is combined 0-0 with a 0.65 ERA (3 ER/41.2 IP) and 65 strikeouts in 13 minor league games.

Brito, 20, is 2-4 with a 1.86 ERA (6 ER/29.0 IP) and 32 strikeouts in 12 games (two starts) for the Dominican Summer League Blue Jays. The left-handed pitcher is in his first season with the Blue Jays organization after signing as an international free agent on June 2, 2022.

White, 27, made 15 appearances (10 starts) for the Dodgers, going 1-2 with a 3.70 ERA (23 ER/56.0 IP) and 47 strikeouts for the Dodgers this season. In three years with the Dodgers, he is a combined 3-5 with a 3.58 ERA (42 ER/105.2 IP) and 98 strikeouts in 38 games. He was originally selected in the second round of the 2016 First Year Player Draft out of Santa Clara University.

De Jesus, 20, was batting .272 with 11 homers and 48 RBI combined between Single-A Rancho Cucamonga and High-A Great Lakes. He clubbed seven homers and recorded 22 RBI with Rancho before being promoted on May 31, 2022. In 50 games with Great Lakes, he was batting .282 with four homers and 26 RBI. He has been with the Dodgers four seasons, batting a combined .273 (247-for-906) with 26 homers and 155 RBI. He was signed as an international free agent by the Dodgers out of Santo Domino, Dominican Republic on July 3, 2018.

    1. I will wait to read what the minor league experts here think about these two guys. At least Their numbers look pretty good.

      1. I really like this move.

White is representative of the team’s problem. Too many pitchers close to the majors. Need to get value for some of them before the value dissipates.

        Here’s something I found:
Nick Frasso is a really good pickup for the Dodgers. He has one of the highest whiff% in all of MiLB. He releases the ball 3 feet from the center of the rubber. He has an electric fastball with rise and run. His changeup gets over 20 inches of run. Full gyro slider at 85 too.

  68. Merrifield traded and Braves got closer Rafael Iglesias from the Angels for two players. Angels traded Syndergaard to the Phillies.

  69. Looks like AF is just trying to make room for some players coming back. The two kids from Toronto only played in A ball or less.

  70. Yea I agree MT, Muncy to the woodpile immediately, Gallo has a month, Vargas up now, Stone now, Outman remains

  71. Are the Dodgers cash strapped….I ask sarcastically.? Trading Lamb and getting Gallo’s .158 AVG and $4 million in payroll = trading Lamb for $$$.

No real upgrades to the BP concerns me and my only takeaway is the Dodger braintrust and medical team must be thoroughly and absolutely convinced Treinen, May, Duffy, Kahnle, V-Gone and Graterol are all or in part returning soon and will make a strong roster even better. I only care that we win the WS, I could care less about winning the trade deadline, but at the same time I am underwhelmed with the acquisition of just Martin and Gallo.

      1. High expectations combined with lots of uncontrollable variables, yes, but wouldn’t it be a disappointment if the Dodgers didn’t?

        1. Going deep into the weeds. Multiple things in this case are true.

Will not winning the World Series be a disappointment? Of course.
Will the season still be a joy? Of course.
Will the joy of having a well run team “overcome” the disappointment of not winning the WS? Of course.

          1. If they don’t win the World Series in a 4-0 sweep the Dodgers are dead to me.

  72. Molly Knight sums it up nicely for me:

They must be super confident in Dustin May’s return, and maybe even Buehler. I have concerns about Heaney’s durability and Gonsolin regressing but nobody asked me. Could have used relief too.

      1. I think we concluded that she doesn’t know very much. She wrote a Kitty Kelley style gossip pulp book about the Dodgers and now opines about sundry social justice issues.

        1. So you reject Knight’s baseball comment because you don’t like her politics?

What about her baseball comment do you object to?

          1. I reject most of her comments because they’re mostly shrill, angry, and intolerant virtue signaling. Her unoriginal and boilerplate baseball takes are just along for the ride.

      2. I love it when this blog goes existential.

If a writer writes something and you don’t like the writer, does she exist? Does what she wrote?

A Schroedinger’s box (spelling?) for our time.

    1. The key line in that is “nobody asked me”. Multiple sources have confirmed that, in fact, nobody ever asks her.

  73. I didn’t think the Dodgers needed to make a big move. Not surprised that AF didn’t want to match what the costs were on many of these trades.

That said, the Gallo trade did bother me on one sense; the optics. The few Padre fans I know are going to be intolerable. Already got a text from one… “Congrats on Gallo, we got a 2x AS outfielder too. You might have heard of him”.

Dodgers are still better. But I feel for Angel fans. When the Angels should be trading Ohtani for an entire minor league system they instead traded their very talented 24 YO outfielder with years of team control for a good AA catcher. After they just drafted a catcher in the 1st round who will likely be in AA next year. I’m so glad I’m not an Angel fan. AF plays chess. Arte Moreno plays shoots and ladders.

  74. Vargas is being activated for tonight’s game.

No word yet on whose place he takes but probably JT to the IL?

  75. “Congrats on Gallo, we got a 2x AS outfielder too. You might have heard of him”.

    LOL

Maybe Arte is smarter than us all. Maybe he realizes Angel fans will continue to show up as long as there is a marketable star.

I remember the conniption Dodger fans on that other blog had when AF traded away Puig and got “nothing” in return. Actually, the Reds got fleeced, but people understand stars.

    1. THIS!

i think it’s reprehensible that owners like Moreno do their schtick. Driving a team into mediocrity, while the Padres and Preller build assets and use them to keep fans involved and the team relevant.

  76. Had we got Soto the division would have been automatic for three years and likely longer, and it wound have Just cost prospects. First huge mistake of Friedman era,

    1. No, the first huge mistake was Bauer.
Not necessarily Andrew’s fault, but it turned out to be a big mistake.

  78. Some bizarre stuff here.
Hard to imagine that the old “change of scenery” will quickly cure Gallo. One analyst said he will likely platoon with Trayce Thompson in left…. but doesn’t Trayce have reverse splits? Gallo has hit 11 of his 12 HRs against righties, but his BA this year is still under .200. I presume his arrival prompted Lamb getting dealt to Mariners. Gallo has a better OF glove than Lamb, but I don’t really see an upgrade here.
Dodgers may live to regret trading White, but with various pitchers coming back he probably didn’t figure into plans this year. The two young prospects they get seem promising–probably better than Beeter.
When Chris Taylor and Edwin Rios are activated, it seems likely that Outman will head back to OKC.
Sure, it’s a small sample size, but there is precedent for prospects coming up and staying hot, like Seager did.
Instead we get to hope that Gallo makes a comeback.

  79. And though our top prospects are solid, do not see a perennial all star or superstar in the bunch. I am not blown away by even Cartaya as I don’t see him being able to stay a catcher.

Soto and Bell would have allowed us to rival the 1927 Yankees and chase the all time wins record of 116!

    Swing and miss gentlemen

    1. Well, you are obviously a lot smarter than Keith Law so that’s why we have to believe you… with your track record and all!

  80. DODGERS SELECT MIGUEL VARGAS

LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Dodgers selected the contract of infielder/outfielder Miguel Vargas from Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Vargas, 22, hit .291 with 24 doubles, 15 homers and 72 RBI in 94 games for Triple-A Oklahoma City. He represented the Dodgers in the 2022 Futures Game after hitting .292/.379/.498 with 18 doubles, 13 home runs and 59 RBI across 364 plate appearances. The Cuban native has been with the Dodgers five minor league seasons, and he has hit a combined .310 (480-for-1548) with 47 homers and 255 RBI in 391 career minor league games. The Dodgers’ Branch Rickey Minor League Player of the Year in 2021, slashed .319/.380/.526 with 23 homers and 76 RBI in 120 games between High-A Great Lakes and Double-A Tulsa in 2021. He was originally signed by the Dodgers as an international free agent on September 7, 2017.

  81. Almost makes me think nobody wants to trade with us. Yesterday my wife asked why any team would want the Dodgers to get better and I had no answer.

    1. glaze3 –

Of the 200+ comments posted about today, this is the one I think sums it up best…”Almost makes me think nobody wants to trade with us.” Thanks to your wife for asking the question…..

  82. I will address all of this tomorrow as I have an epic post that will likely piss many of you off as you play with your checkers!

Some of you will never understand it until it is so evident that you must admit it, and then you will leave…

  83. Where are we going Mark? Will Vargas play 3rd base and Muncy sits? Can’t believe they bring him up to sit.

  84. I’m just happy we didn’t get Soto. For what San Diego traded, this is what I deduct The Nats wanted:

DMay, GLux, Cartaya, one of Miller/Pepiot and one of Busch, Vargas and CBellinger/MMuncy for $$$ offsetting.

About Gallo, he was gotten primarily for defensive purposes.

In Two weeks, we have to accommodate CTaylor, BGraterol and DMay. I expect ERios to stay in AAA unless there is an injury.

  85. Well he didn’t screw it up in 20 using Julio and Gonzalez. Look what Soto has already done for the Pads lineup tonight! Really we’re gonna start Barnes and Alberto tonight over Vargas! Throw him in the fire like Outman!

  86. Dodgers are going to show the Padres why investing in your system is how you win. Vargas will rake. His father is one of the most famous e baseball players who ever played in Cuba. He’s a real Dodger. Wait till you all see his smile when he hits his first one out. He’s was born to play in LA.

Cartaya will be next year. Intangibles are a thing. I might be wrong. Don’t think I am.

Hold me accountable. By the playoffs in 2023, people will be talking about the charismatic young stars on the Dodgers who are kicking ass and taking names. Not the Padres.

  87. Aaaaaaaand:

    Friedman in his PC:

“I feel good about the team that we have in place and the way that they’ve performed for us. If we had an acute need, you’d see us be more on tilt and things where it’s less of an acute need, it’s more about talent and how it fits short term, long term. There’s just a different process that goes into that. I feel good about how aggressive we were in trying to line up on different things.”

Repeatedly referred to the trade deadline as the “most expensive time of year” to acquire players.

“We have a really special dynamic in that room right now and it was something we were cognizant of as we navigated this deadline.”

on Joey Gallo: “Our hitting guys are as good as it gets, so we feel there is a really compelling upside story.”

“I think our pitching staff is really good and will most likely get considerably better. So we’ll figure out through August and September what that looks like. I feel really confident we’ll have a very, very good 13-man pitching staff in October.”

Andrew Friedman cited the coming 40-man roster crush (May, Duffy, Buehler, Kahnle, Treinen, Gonzalez) as a reason for trading Mitch White. He went on to say the Dodgers have “a lot of pitchers” who could come up this season or next year.

  88. I have had time to sit back and digest what went down today. I also have calmed down a lot from the way I felt earlier. For those fans who have seen AF send multiple prospects to other teams at the deadline the last few years, this season’s deadline was obviously a disappointment. Joey Gallo was the only MLB ready player that the Dodgers acquired, and they sent 3 players who were on the 40-man roster elsewhere. This tells me the Freidman believes in the players he has and the players on the IL who will soon be returning to action. There are some pretty good pitchers on that list. JT will probably be joining them tomorrow when Gallo arrives since his side is still bothering him. Vargas gets promoted so they can see what he can bring to the dance. I am not a huge Gallo fan. But he is a very good defensive outfielder and makes the defense out in left that much better. My main dislike for him is because he strikes out at almost a 40% clip. That is way too many useless outs for me. I am not the one making the personnel decisions though. The Padres definitely went all in to win now. They also just extended Musgrove for 5 more years. But, their starting pitching is not all that great. Clevinger has not been the pitcher he was in Cleveland. The last time LA faced Snell, they beat up on him. Darvish has flashes, but he also can be beaten. They traded their best rookie pitcher in Gore. Now they did get Hader, and he is lights out when he is right. Over the last few weeks though, his ERA is over 7. Pads have 12 games left with the Dodgers. 6 of the 12 are in LA. 9 of the 12 are also in September. They have 57 games left after the game they played today. They won so right now they are 11.5 games back of LA. Also, while the Dodgers finish with 6 at home against Colorado, they have to play the White Sox and Giants at home. They have about a 25% chance of catching LA to win the division. Doubt that will happen, which means they will have to go the wild card route to even get to the Dodgers who right now would have a bye in the wild card round. If they get through that, and their opponents would be either the Mets or Braves most likely, then they would possibly meet up with the Dodgers in the playoffs. So now it is just a race to the finish. Pads have never had the better team on paper. They might have that now but a lot depends on how Soto performs in his new uni, Tatis coming back and being Tatis, which at this point is not a given. The healthier the Dodgers get, the better they are. I also have to believe that one of the factors in not going whole hog is the chemistry that exists in this clubhouse. These guys really believe they are the best.

  89. As much as I hate the Pads, I really would like to see them be a better team, because it’s even MORE SATISFYING to crush them.

  90. BTW, a friend’s son is one of those nerdy analysts who works in the Blue Jays front office. He studied this stuff at the University of Oregon, and worked for the Marlins before the Jays lured him away.
Anyway, she is thrilled that White is now a Blue Jay- She says that Frasso is really a good prospect, but there’s little reason to get excited about Brito.

    These guys:
Frasso, 23, has a 0.74 ERA in 10 starts this year between Low-A Dunedin and High-A Vancouver, with 57 strikeouts against 10 walks in 36⅔ innings. The right-hander played college ball at Loyola Marymount, and was drafted by Toronto in the fourth round in 2020.
Brito, who just turned 20 last month, was signed this June out of Bani in the Dominican Republic. In 12 games and 29 innings in the Dominican Summer League for Toronto, Brito had a 1.86 ERA and 32 strikeouts against just one walk.

Toronto also got SS Alex De Jesus. The farm has a lot of depth in the SS/UT area, and the Dodgers just drafted a bunch more.

  91. Well in the dugout they don’t appear to be disappointed with the deadline outcome. I stayed out of all the trade talk as I thought Pat is gonna get us to at least 110 wins! Ain’t no team gonna beat that this year unless Dodgers do! And that is more than possible.

  92. Vin Scully R.I.P.

    There are no words.

The Dodgers need to win the World Series this year with a Special Vin Scully patch on their uniforms.

    What does the patch say?

    “It’s Time For Dodger Baseball!”

  93. Oh my God Joe just reported that Vinny has passed away. This hurts my heart
Once he lost his wife, I think He lost his love for life.
Rest in peace Vinny,The greatest dodger ever

    1. Vin Scully passed away. Just announced on the broadcast. RIP Vin. I have so many memories of that golden voice describing the games on my transistor radio.

  94. Vinny is with his wife, Sandy, Tommy Lasorda, Tommy Davis, Roy, Gil, Junior and all of the rest of the Dodgers with the Big Dodger in the Sky!

My keyboard is wet with tears!

  95. My heart is hurt, a hug to heaven. The best is now among the greats up there. Rest in peace Vinny!

  96. Man all those years with my radio that fit in my hand before there was the Internet listening to Vin Scully.

  97. It was a pleasure to listen to the greatest who ever did it for so many years. We have all been blessed by Vin Scully!

  98. God bless the greatest LA Dodger of them all – Rest in Peace , Vinny! Thanks for all the memories…..

  99. His voice coming over AM radio in my parents 59 Mercury stuck in traffic and my Dad cussing at it on our way to the game. I was hoping he’d outlive me as I hoped just one more time for one more game he’d come out of retirement. Well it’s part of living. THANK YOU VIN. You made life a little sweeter.

  100. Very sad news to wake up to. A true legend.

I’m good with the deadline, maybe woulda like to have added a RH thumper, and I think Gallo was worth a punt.

Surprised White was moved as I believe that you can never have enough Pitching, and he’d done it at MLB level, but we must have a lot of good arms in the system.

Always great to beat SF, and really looking forward to the rest of the season.
Gonna be a good team that wins the WS this year.

  101. What a sad , sad day . Just heard about it.
The voice of the Dodgers has fallen silent forever. But he will forever live in our memories .
I met him once in ST in Vero Beach and he took a minute or two for my wife and me to talk to us when I told him we came over from Germany to attend spring training. Signed a ball and a sorecard for us. Such a gentleman.

Somehow it is fitting that he died on a day when the Dodger and Giants played a game. His favorit team of his youth vs the team of his life.

RIP, Vin, you were the Greatest of all time.

    Go Dodgers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  102. Alex Speier of the Boston Globe reports that the Padres are paying a whopping $44MM to the Red Sox, reducing Boston’s commitment to Hosmer to the league minimum in addition to the prospects to the Nationals for Soto.
