The Price is Wrong

Maybe I am just the overly-sensitive type, but David Price just rubs me the wrong way. Of course, we all know that he was part of the Mookie Betts trade and his first season with the Dodgers was 2020. I had COVID-19 twice that season at age 67, but he opted out of the season because ________________________ (you fill in the blanks). I have no clue why he did it… and I probably don’t care! David Price might be a guy you would go to a tea party with, or maybe to a fashion show, but no one in the history of the world would want to go to war it David Price.

David Price is making $32 million this year. The Dodgers only have to pay $16 million of that, but by my calculations, that is about $20 million too high. David Price doesn’t really seem to care! He has made his money… and is still making it. He is talking about retiring after this season, which indicates he might have already checked out. His ERA sits at 3.63, but he is the highest-paid pitcher in the game of baseball that you cannot count on. Well, actually, you can count on him to choke when you need him the most. Bring him in in a 4-runs game and he can hold the lead. Ask him to keep the team within a run and that is too much to ask! The Price is wrong. Andrew Friedman needs to get it right!

Sooner or later, all pitchers struggle, but Mitch White struggled mightily last night and while I hesitate to say it, I will: “His struggles are between his ears.” I don’t mean that in a bad way – it’s just that Mitch White needs to get mentally tougher. He could learn a thing or two from Max Scherzer who “snarls” when he gives up a baserunner. Mitch has excellent stuff… but he just needs to raise his “snarl response.” That was an ugly outing but the Dodgers could have still won it if the Price was right!

Justin Turner is hitting .423 in his last 7 games, .385 in his last 15 games, and .290 in his last 30 games. That is something the Dodgers can live with. He may not be a superstar, but he is solid and so is his defense. On the other hand, Max Muncy is hitting .143 in his last 7 games, .140 in his last 15 games, and .170 in his last 30 games. Cody Bellinger is hitting .217 in his last 7 games. .184 in his last 15 and .211 in his last 30.

Max Muncy and Cody Bellinger are what their statistics say they are. The Dodgers can live with Bellinger and his elite defense, but they cannot carry both players. Unless Max says he is injured and needs to go on the IL, the Dodgers are going to have to cut him. What other options are there? The team simply cannot carry that bat. The Dodgers should not wait any longer. Find out if Miguel Vargas is ready three weeks before the trade deadline and if he is totally overmatched, then you have time to make a deal. I think he is ready! It’s Sad Max!

BTW, Andrew Heaney threw a simulated game yesterday in St. Louis and is headed to Rancho on July 16 where he will throw 3 or 4 innings. It seems to me that they will be limiting his pitches and that he might not be a starter… at least this season. Still, that guy can be very valuable.

CALL UP MIGUEL VARGAS

This article has 76 Comments

  1. Ok. so you can’t win every game. We scored six, but this time pitching wasn’t there. Yes JT hot lately, but yesterday back in the Black Hole Gang(BHG). And when Barnes in lineup I call that (BHG+). They were 0-10 with about 5Ks And 0-5 with RISP. Including Max Popping out on 3-1 pitch with based load and 0 outs. Then Codi strikes out to end inning. No runs scored. So they take the blame along with Price. Today is another game.

    1. Alberto flied out for the second out before Cody struck out. Leaving the bases loaded with no outs is something this team has done a lot.

  2. With two out top of the ninth, 3-0 count, Lamb gets the green light. Did Roberts think it was better for Lamb to take a shot, rather than walk and leave it up to Bellinger?

Also, why did Muncy pinch hit for Thompson but then Lamb comes in to replace him in LF?

    1. Don’t try and figure out what Roberts is doing because a lot of his decisions don’t make sense.

  3. You bet Lamb was swinging 3-0 because Bellinger was on deck. Even my wife was yelling for him to get the green light! Feel bad for Muncy but it’s time for him to sit. The Dodger sense of player loyalty has become a real weakness, especially with Max and Price. Why is Alberto still getting ab’s? If you bring up Vargas I guess he’s the dh. Is that difficult on a young player? It’s time to see if he’s for real!

    1. Not that I’m an Alberto fan but he did hit a double and score a run. Made a nice play in the field as well.

  4. I mentioned the other day that Max needed some time off to reboot mentally. Maybe, physically as well. If he is hurt at all then why the need to have him play almost everyday. I agree with Mark and others that it’s Vargas time. The team has a nice lead in the division, the trade deadline is fast approaching, and Max Muncy stinks. If not now, when? How does it hurt the team to have him come up for 2-3 weeks and see what’s what with him? When we are subjected to awful under performances from Bellinger, Muncy, Alberto, and Price why can’t we see what Vargas can do? I mean all we are asking from him is to hit over .200 and play an average LF. That would move Lux to 2B permanently where he belongs.
    Carry On.

  5. Looking at the BA and performances by the bottom of last nights lineup (Barnes, Alberto, TT,Bellinger) it is a testimony how good the rest of the hitters are that we even scored 6 runs.
And Roberts once again is really piss.ing me off. RHP starting and he leaves Lux out of the lineup. Even vs LHP Lux is batting at about .290. Kid is a top 10 hitter in the NL and Roberts does everything trying to cool him off again and again.
Muncy is at the end of the leash if it was up to me. Rally killer par excellence once again. Bring up Vargas already and sent Muncy down or to the IL. For some time now he has once good game every once in a week only to do nothing the rest of the games.

On the pitching side both Price and Bickford would be my first picks as soon as some of the walking wounded pitchers return. White would be next in line. Those 3 are the weak links on an otherwise exceptional pitching staff.

    Go Dodgers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  6. Hard to argue with any of that Mark. I really want Price to be good. At times, he flashes his talent. He really killed us in the ’18 World Series and he was really bringing it the last time he pitched. But I get the same feeling as you do. He just doesn’t seem to give a ____.

I also agree with your assessment of Mitch. He just seems a bit soft. He’s got really good stuff, but doesn’t finish as he should.

Muncy is another story for me. I’ve always felt his offensive production is a bit overrated. I’m not a fan of three true outcome type players. He just simply doesn’t get enough hits for me to be a middle of the order bat and his defense is suspect at times. I cringed a little last night when he was used to pinch hit for Trayce Thompson. Righty, Junior Fernandez was still on the hill at the time having loaded the bases and walking in a run with no outs. Doc did the predictable and put in Muncy, then the lefty Naughton was called in to face him, Alberto and Bellinger. A perfect spot for the opposing manager to bring in a lefty and we got nothing more. Nothing worse than not capitalizing on bases loaded no outs.

Why not just send Trayce up there against a struggling right hander? Why not make it difficult for Marmol to make the corresponding change? If he brings in the lefty, then Trayce has the platoon advantage and is a better hitter than Muncy this year regardless against either side. If he brings in another righty, then you can make the sub and then at least Muncy has a platoon advantage as does Bellinger. If he sticks with his struggling pitcher, we have a better chance with Trayce, who’s been in the game already than Muncy. Doc walks into ambushes like this all the time. That’s why I can’t stand him. He can’t see one step ahead and constantly gets played like a banjo at a Hillbilly convention.

It’s a sad situation for Muncy. Even though he’s a three true outcome guy, he was at least very good at it until that fateful injury. Like Belli, an unusually high percentage of very hard hit balls have gone for outs this year. But, like Belli, he also looks lost at the plate more often than not. I believe both of them can be fixed. I’m not sure if it makes sense to just cut Max in favor of a Vargas. That’s a huge risk for this season and going into next season. But, fortune favors the bold. And as you said, you can’t carry both in the same lineup.

    1. Well said B&P, the Muncy-for-Thompson switch. My two-cent opinion says that was a baffling decision.

And your other observations and comments were also interesting.

Relatively new to the blog so I’m not good with names yet. I’m sure I’ve read your comments before but can’t remember . But that pitch hit situation kept me thinking about it for more than a few minutes and I’m not even a dodger fan! I’m just a fan of good , clean baseball and of managers not trying to outthink themselves. Again, a depreciated two-cent opinion, but not Roberts’ finest moment.

I think Vargas gets the call eventually, maybe decision makers are waiting for the break. But with the trade deadline looming , not much runway for Vargas to make an impression . Either way, I think the FO makes a move or acquisition at the deadline; interested to know your thoughts…..cheers!

  7. Back in the 80s when I cared about professional basketball, there was a pretty good center who played for the Golden State Warriors – Joe Barry Carrol. He was talented. He was fairly productive in his career, but his team never won and the general nonchalance of his overall style of play and body language and demeanor on the court earned him the sobriquet “Joe Barely Cares.”

I’ve made this argument about Price before. I honestly can’t read his mind so can’t say with certainty whether there is any truth to it or it’s merely a “hot take,” but it’s also likely he’s checked out. That happens. We listen to players give interviews and they say all the right cliches about helping their team win, etc., but players are human. Price has been around for a long time. He’s spent his entire life playing baseball. He has all the money he’ll ever want. There is no pressure for him to succeed other than his own intrinsic drive, but he’s on the tail end of his career and he knows he’s not going to sign another contract after this year. He’s mentally done.

If you think about it, it’s understandable. He was a throw in with the Mookie trade. He was included for accounting purposes. The Dodgers didn’t want him. They accepted him to make the finances work. He was ballast. That he took a year off, without pay, tells you his level of motivation to play in LA, or play at all. The Dodgers have never relied on him in high leverage situations or important games. They know.

On the other hand, maybe we’re wrong and Price still has the motivation to play because he’s a professional and shows up ready to play, and although diminished, he still has flashes of talent that will be useful under the right circumstances.

In either case, the price is wrong, b***h! https://youtu.be/87R0MZsO2BU

Thinking a little more about the Ohtani hypothetical from yesterday, although the Angels have imploded this year and their farm system stinks, I’m not sure that Arte is a seller. I’m not sure he’s ever a seller. To be fair, if I’m the Angels, I’m still hopeful that they can field a good team next year. If they can sign Ohtani and find a starting pitcher or two, they have a reasonable chance of being good.

More Dodger hypotheticals out there about going after Castillo. At this point is he needed?

addendum – thinking about Price just walking away from 32 million to take a year off does say something about the financial state of the game and makes me annoyed with the decisions of Seager. They don’t need the money, and it’s not about the money. It’s a game in an of itself. How much can I get? Had Seager accepted the Dodgers offer he still would have been fantastically wealthy. He opted to get as much as he could. That part of winning was more important to him than winning on the field.

    1. I believe it was Jered Weaver who gave the Angels a big home town discount when he was a free agent. He was quoted “how much money do you need “.

    2. I’ve always wondered how much our getting Trea to look over Seager’s shoulder last year influenced his decision to leave. Maybe it was just the money. Maybe it was his very close relationship with Ranger manager Chris Woodward. We’ll probably never know.

    3. I remember when Joe Barely Carroll played at Purdue. Here’s a photo of him:
      chi-pillsbury-dough-boy-creator-dead-20150402

  8. I think David Price rubs most people the wrong way. He’s always danced to a different drum. Since Price was included in the deal for Mookie Betts, I was hopeful he would contribute something. That was dashed in 2020 when he opted out. The situation hasn’t improved.

Honestly I had issues with the trade for Betts. Just like Gonzo, the Red Sox managed to unload bad contracts on the Dodgers. I get it, the Dodgers wanted to make a statement in the Original trade. This time they wanted Mookie and the price was Price. If I’m in charge I don’t do the deal, probably rather just sign Bryce Harper.

Don’t get me wrong, I like Mookie. But I don’t like the Dodgers taking on bad contracts like Price. It seems like a waste. Why keep bailing Boston out? Would the Dodgers have won in 2020 without Mookie? Harper in his place. No idea.

I agree Mark, Price isn’t worth anywhere close to the money he’s getting. In fact, his contributions are negligible.

I also agree on Cody Bellinger. His defense is elite. But you can’t carry Max Muncy and Bellinger —- and somehow expect the offense to improve. Muncy has to hit and he’s simply not producing. Maybe it’s the shoulder. But it’s creating a drag. Justin Turner’s bat is helping to bolster the offense, but the Dodgers need more production elsewhere.

I keep wondering if Mookie will ever repeat his best years from his Boston days. Had a very good first season and he showed up to play. But injuries seem to hurting his play. Yes, he’s hit 20 homeruns, but he should be a .300 hitter, more consistent.

The Dodgers miss AJ Pollock, had a lot of big hits over the past couple of years. I agree with David regarding the black hole, too many rallies die with those hitters. Dodgers are definitely not meeting the pre-season build-up, best line-up ever and all the rest of the hype.

But at this point with several pitchers due back soon, maybe Friedman doesn’t do much at the trade deadline. Yes, the Cincy pitcher could help, but the price may be too high, maybe the Dodgers need to stop trading away some of their prospects, which Friedman recently noted.

The trade for Josh Fields will haunt them for years. Not sure how that slipped past. They gave Yordan Alvarez a sizable bonus, the scouting reports and video certainly made him a player to hang on to and try to develop. Seems like a massive failure in communication. Oh, well. A Roberto Clemente moment. Signed in the middle of June and traded away August 1. That’s on Farhan Zaidi.

Still, we’re now eight games ahead of a floundering Padres team with the Giants a distant third.

Life is good. But it could be better.

  9. A lot of good comments today that I agree with including:

Roberts again being “constantly played like a banjo a Hillbilly convention” by other MLB managers!

Dodgers can’t continue to carry both Muncy and Bellinger in the lineup; both look befuddled at bat. Keep Bellinger because of his defense and baserunning skills.

Put Alberto in a “cheerleading uniform” and make Lux your everyday second baseman. Time to move on from Price too.

Bring up Vargas to see what he can do.

  10. Miquel Vargas, come on down. You are the next contestant on The Price Is Wrong. Max, thanks for playing.

  11. I never liked Price since that incident on the Boston team plane when he verbally attacked Dennis Eckersley ( who you would think MAY have earned the right to criticize Boston Pitching) . Price came across to me as a loudmouth , arrogant a-hole.

  12. Price is what he is. He had to be included in the Betts deal or it would not have happened. Is he worth the 48 mil total the Dodgers will have paid him? No, not a chance in hell. But, he has done everything they have asked of him the last two seasons. He is obviously a team player. With all the money he is making, he could have made a huge fuss about being a starter. But he never has done that. I respect the man for sticking to his guns during the pandemic season. Look, Buster Posey opted out of playing that year and no one rags on him. Also, Price paid EVERY MINOR LEAGUER IN THE DODGER SYSTEM 1000 DOLLARS. out of his own pocket that year because they were not getting paid. That alone merits some consideration of his good character. He is not the same pitcher he was five years ago that is true, but I have seen guys on this site calling for LA to bring back Zack Greinke, and his stats are much worse than Price’s . Jays just fired their manager, Charlie Montoyo.

  13. The Jays firing Montoyo encouraged me to write one last time about several on this site wanting the same for Doc. I know B&P you are tired of me doing this but quite frankly I am also tired of you (and others) making what I feel are ridiculous conclusions about Doc.

In his five full seasons, his teams have averaged 99.8 wins. You say winning percentage is not important but exactly what is a Manager there to do if not win games. What in the world do all of you want? His teams have won 106 twice and 104 once. How much do you want the 99.8 wins improved? That number is the best in MLB current history. I honestly don’t know if anyone as Manager could make some of you happy.

I know he has had great talent. No one ever argues my point about other Managers with great talent. So here goes for the last time. Bobby Cox with 3 Hall of Fame starting pitchers and an otherwise very good team averaged 90.1 wins over the 15 years he had great players. Sparky Anderson with the Big Red Machine averaged 95.9 over the 9 years with that talent. Joe Torre with obviously a great Yankee team averaged 97.8 wins with that team over 12 years. I only picked those 3 for comparison but any other great Managers with great talent would also prove to have less of a record than Doc.

Most of you are happy with Andrew Friedman. He is arguably one of, if not the best, front office man in baseball. He has the responsibility of making lots of decisions, including who manages the team. Frankly I will always go with his judgement and not the wannabe GM’s the write on this blog.

As Mark has said a few times, when they lose it is Doc’s fault and when they win Doc had nothing to do with it. That is certainly exemplified by B&P’s criticism the other day when Lamb was in the lineup instead of Thompson. When Lamb hit a very important home run, we got great he hit a home run but I would have still played Thompson from B&P. No where did he give Doc any credit for playing Lamb.

I will close by once again saying we are all very lucky to root for this team/organization. Unfortunately some of you expect perfection which, of course, will never happen. Many things go into why a team wins or loses. In game decisions are certainly important but only part of the outcome. B&P, you are a very smart guy with lots of great things to contribute. You do have an obsession with your anti feeling about Doc. I also have an obsession (as a fan for a long time) to try to set the record straight. You can certainly choose to ignore facts but I hope you can also change.

    1. Could not agree more with the overall sentiment.

So the team loses a game because one of its best players is still struggling to find his form 1/2 year after a serious injury! Who gives a fuck?

It’s a long season, Muncy will be an asset in time. Don’t sweat this silliness.

    2. As fans we will never be happy with the manager. But who knows . So Mattingly had all those winning years here. How is he doing now? What about Torre before he went to Yanks. He was a disaster. So its the nature of the game (or any game). Losses are ‘the fault’ of the manger. What if Kirk Gibson had struck out? Or Bobby Thompson. Win or lose the guys have to come thru. Maybe the managers main contribution is in the clubhouse. Back when the Marlins won their Series in 2003 I think they had Jeff Torberg as Manager. An easy going guy. So they fired him and brought in tough guy Jack Mckeon. That worked and they turned it around. But he wore out his welcome pretty quickly. How many times are you going to scream and curse the millionaires before they tune you out. So my point is — I don’t know if I had a point. But anyway, nice chatting about managers

    3. I think you have a very simplistic view. Good manager = good winning percentage. I pointed out how he walked into a land mind in a critical situation last night and I get a lecture back on how Doc is a great manager because of his winning percentage and because Jake Lamb had 1 hit, a solo shot, after Trayce was 500 in his last three games before that.

      Way to go JayB, brilliant!

And I truly hope this is “The last time” as you put it. There’s a reason why there are so many articles written second-guessing Doc’s boneheaded moves. And not by just us wannabe GM’s

      https://www.google.com/search?q=dave+roberts+questionable+moves&sxsrf=ALiCzsYl-YIIMX7q23Aayc0mDkdY5ny8Qg%3A1657739596409&ei=TBnPYs-tGNqhkPIP66KSmAs&ved=0ahUKEwjPg5ieyfb4AhXaEEQIHWuRBLMQ4dUDCA4&uact=5&oq=daver+roberts+questionable+moves&gs_lcp=Cgdnd3Mtd2l6EANKBAhBGABKBAhGGABQAFgAYABoAHAAeACAAQCIAQCSAQCYAQA&sclient=gws-wiz

  14. Yes its tough to score with the black hole gang. So if one of them gets a couple of hits then maybe. But if TT or Freeman don’t get on. Then you are down to only 3 hitters or so. As for JT, he got hot at the right time and was big in our recent streak. But lets face it, he is one slide, or one first to third, or one stolen base attempt from being out with a hammy for 1 month. As for Max-we know we don’t know the whole story. So obviously the plan (not just from Roberts), as long as we are winning. Keep him (and Beli) in there and hope they come around. We know a team will only resort to ‘rookies’ as a last resort. After all managers are former old players who felt their knowledge would carry them

  15. I’ve said enough about Bellinger and Muncy lately and my wish to being up Vargas to DH. And my feelings on playing Lux everyday at 2nd. I’m hoping Alberto was in there yesterday for a Lux day off and I’m good with that. I just never want to see Lux in left again. IDEA – Maybe we could keep Lux in left and trade for Joc to play first base. Never mind.
Pitchers who make 30 starts are said to usually have 5 starts where they are locked in; everything working, 5 clunkers and 20 normal outings. I think this one of the clunkers for Mitch White.
The MLB rules folks are at it again, Here’s a clip from the Athletic about the latest experimental shift:

“Another shift-limiting change is coming to the minors this season that will alter the way the diamonds look in the Low-A Florida State League. Beginning July 22, chalk lines will appear in the infield dirt behind second base, sources told The Athletic.
The goal? Major League Baseball hopes that the large, pie-shaped chalk line that goes from the far tip of second base to the outfield grass to prevent infielders from playing behind the bag will lead to more base hits up the middle.
There are shift rules, implemented in 2021, already in place up through Double A. One prevents infielders from playing on the outfield grass, and another stipulates that two infielders must be positioned on either side of second base.
The latter rule hasn’t led to the results MLB wanted, as a shortstop or second baseman can station himself just inches to the side of second base, all the way back to the outfield grass. So MLB will watch what happens in the Low-A league closely to see if the change generates more offense.
MLB has put together a competition committee that includes executives, current players and an active umpire to discuss these rules changes. The group will monitor the results in the minor leagues this season and it’s likely MLB adopts shift limits, potentially including a new restricted area of sorts behind second base, as soon as the 2023 season. MLB has to provide only 45 days notice before making rules changes, thanks to a change in the most recent collective bargaining agreement.”

    1. It’s rules like this that let you know when the Bureaucracy has grown too large to be effective. Keep it simple stupid! We don’t need to be wasting more chalk! Just make them all have a foot on some dirt and 2 players on each side of second base and be done with it.

You get everything you want. More hits and hitters still trying to yank everything out pull side. If the illegal defense is called on a hit ball, the batter is safe at first and gets credited with a single.

  16. Glad to see others here coming around to what I saw a long time ago about Price. By the way his slash line this year is .304/.340/.533/.873, there is nothing good there, except maybe he doesn’t give up a lot of walks.

Also glad some here are coming around to seeing what I’ve seen in Alberto. Besides the back up catcher Barnes, who I won’t include because you need a back up catcher, the 2 worst hitters on the team, not including Barnes, are Alberto and Muncy. You make the call who’s worse.

    A comparison of slash lines:
    Muncy .161/.313/.309/.622
    Alberto .222/.232/.346/.577

I’m disappointed in Mitch White’s performance yesterday because I like the guy, mainly because he has similar stats against both sides of the plate. With the 3 batter minimum rule, down the line if he doesn’t work out as a starter (I hope not) and becomes a reliever. and his stats are decent and similar against both sides of the plate, he may become a good reliever. I hate when relievers, according to their stats, are vulnerable against one side of the plate.

Yency Almonte is on a good streak right now, and his overall stats this year are excellent. He’s unhittable against LHB with a .325 OPS this year and above average against RHB with a .672 OPS this year (I’d like to see that get a little bit better though against RHB). Besides this year, the rest of his career has been with the Rockies and pitching in that thin air a good amount of times, so to me, his career stats are not a good source to look at.

  17. On Mitch White, he hadn’t ever won me over, but in fairness to his performance last night the Cards were hitting pitches that weren’t strikes. They weren’t getting fat down the middle pitches. Maybe I was raiding the fridge at a time and missed something but the hits I saw were not fat. I’m not saying he threw a good game and his facial expressions sorta remind me of Brandon League’s which is not a fond memory. That is probably my biggest gripe.

    1. I don’t know, maybe I’m wrong, but I think Lux should bat 6th. He has the 5th best OPS on the team with a big enough sample. J Turner’s OPS for the year isn’t as good as Lux, but recently Turner has been doing good, so batting 5th for him is merited. And what the heck, I would put Lamb 7th and bump Bellinger to 8 and Muncy to 9.

    2. Adam Wainwright has reverse splits this season. It’s a good thing we’re stacking so many lefties against him?

      1. Oh yea you caught that. But there isn’t much of an alternative in Barnes and Alberto. But Thompson should be in there somehow.

  19. Biggest difference with the Dodgers these past 2 years is without doubt The Bench.

    Sign Brandon Drury ASAP please

    Ps

Been saying Price is a bad apple for a while now. How come you never hear any stories of his teammates praising him for off the field mentoring like Chase Utley, or being a great role model like CK?

1st to put his hand up to do less – especially last year after a season of rest, when we really needed him to step up after TB went down – he went AWOL.

Totally with Mark , and have said so many times – DP gave up caring when in Boston. Just going throw the motions now.

    1. He’s quite the enigma. Just before these last two games, he went 7 games in a row without allowing a run, 5 baserunners total and stranded 2 inherited runners. So, in his last 8 2/3 innings over 9 appearances, his era is just over 2. He’s given up more than a run in a game just once this season. So, it isn’t as bad as you would think.

But, I agree that he looks disengaged, to say the least.

What to do? Eat the contract? Pitch him more until someone wants to take on some of his contract with a trade? Wait until some guys are ready to come off the IL?

  20. Tough lineup to get through, especially when you have the Cards worst hitter 5 for6 in the series is so far

  21. Well you can’t blame Roberts and Price tonight. And I guess you just can’t keep playing the Cubs and Rockies every series.

  22. Vesia faced a lot of RHB’s there. Only one LHB. He’s vulnerable against RHB’s. Probably doesn’t matter considering the score. He’s excellent and I mean excellent against LHB’s that’s why his overall numbers are decent.

    1. I should’ve said good instead of decent.

And I guess it did matter using Vesia in that spot. The offense is making a comeback.

  23. So the second best player in the NL isn’t even on the all star roster! And the game is at his home stadium. I think the service workers should strike for that reason alone.

  24. I haven’t lost all faith in Max. He, JT and Taylor are great diamond-in-the-rough finds of the modern Dodgers. For years he was the team’s most dependable slugger. I see that in the minors the team sometimes sends poor performers down to Arizona for “development.” Is that an option here?
Not-so-bold prediction: AF brings up Vargas and includes Max as a sweetener in a midseason trade in which he deals a couple of prospects for player the Dodgers need NOW. And that would be OK. Because with the Dodgers covering at least half of his salary, Max will join a small-market team and win Comeback Player of the Year honors for 2023.

    1. No shift next year will help! It will be interesting to see what the OPS will be in 23 compared to the last couple of years for lefties.

  25. Interesting Kimbrel was used in the eighth and Phillips in the ninth. Is this a new thing or just a situational thing?

  26. Win of the year!!!!!! I’m still disappointed in Roberts that he didn’t have the juevos to pitch Price in the 9th!

    1. I was gonna say earlier, Gonsolin should trim that neck beard up a little bit. Now that he’s been bailed out, he better not touch it

  27. Wow, how many times has this team come back from death over the last couple of weeks? JT, Belli, Muncy, Hanser for the win.

    1. Yes, true. Great comeback win!
That is what the Giants did all last season. Come back from the deads over and over again.

      Go Dodgers!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  28. Well, good morning…
And it’s not “juevos”, it’s “HUEVOS”
as I said before, being pessimistic works

    1. Look who woke up! You must have thought Kersh was gonna strike out Rendon and Soto!

  29. Well, Max came through in the clutch tonight with that sacrifice fly. I was surprised the Cards didn’t walk him (on purpose this time) to set the force at home and/or a doubleplay. And Max, of course, wasn’t the only hero in this comeback. Mookie, Belli and even Alberto delivered too. Everybody delivered when the Dodgers were down 6-0.
Just one game, but part of a new trend. These come-from-behind efforts are nice to see. The Dodgers play with a lot of confidence.
Props to Dave Roberts too for using Kimbrel in the 8th and Phillips in the 9th.
    Strateregy!

  30. The anti-Alberto league will have to be quiet for at least a day. Roberts pulled the right strings tonight. Fans need to understand that this team has a lot of confidence in their ability to come back from any deficit. AF loves players who are versatile. He signed Alberto because of his track record against lefty’s and his ability to play multiple positions. It is the same reason that the rumor mill has the Dodgers interested in Brandon Drury of the Reds. With Taylor out until maybe mid August or later, recent reports are not great, the Dodgers need that kind of Swiss Army knife type of player. Drury is hitting in the .270’s and strikes out a lot less than Taylor. Oh yeah, the Ump tonight was awful. He missed a lot of calls.

  31. So Phillips got the W? yep! Strange that starters have to bag 5 innings to qualify for the win regardless of the less than 5 innings score and a RP only has to go 1/2 inning. Phillips did look sharp!
