Pathetic is All You Need to Know

In this NLDS, the Dodgers and Giants have played three games.

The Dodgers have outscored the Giants 9-7.

The Dodgers have outhit the Giants 21-16.

The Dodgers are hitting .208 while the Giants are hitting .176.

The Dodgers have a .252 OB% while the Giants have a .208 OB%.

The Giants have outhomered the Dodgers 4 to 1.

The Dodgers ERA is .2.06 while the Giants is 3.00.

The Giants have scored in every game while the Dodgers have scored in one.

In case you don’t know, you can’t win if you don’t score.

The Giants have won two games. The Dodgers have won one game.

The Dodgers got exactly what they needed from Max Scherzer.

Max gave it all. The hitters gave nothing.

Pujols and Souza got 3 of the 5 hits from the 7th spot!

Betts, J-Turner, T-Turner, Seager, Pollock, and Taylor – all All-Stars in their career were 1-for 22.

To say that the Dodgers hitters were pathetic would be doing a disservice to the word “pathetic.” This is way beyond pathetic. Hurry home, boys, and read your press clipping and collect your paychecks. If I were Max, I would challenge Betts, J-Turner, T-Turner, Seager, Pollock, and Taylor to a fistfight in the locker room. One against six. I got Max!

Now, it’s win the next two or go home. After what I have seen in the past three games, they will go home with their pathetic tails between their legs.

  1. Other than JT had one hit yesterday which makes it 1-22 I fully agree with you.
That was pathetic. If you told me before the game we hold them to one run I would have bet the house on a Dodgers win with Wood going for the Giants.
Giants defense was absolutely flawless especially in the 7th inning. Solano took a hit away from AJ on his ground ball that was headed to RF, then Crawford robbed Mookie with a great play. If either one play goes our way the game is at least tied. Then Lux hit an absolute rocket that the wind held in the park. Giants got a 10th defender on that play.
Just fitting to the year they have had so far.
Now they have beaten both our aces in Max and Walker, putting our backs right at the wall.
Fight back or go home. The bats have to come alive or it will be wait til next year.

    Go Dodgers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. We don’t hit we don’t win.

    Turners both hitting .077, Betts .250, Seager .167, Pollock .200, Bellinger .143, Muncy .000.

Not much else to say. Mark already said it.

    1. Nope, except both Kike and Joc were big time hero’s yesterday, Joc’s 3 run PH homer, all the scoring for the Braves and Kike hit a walk off sac fly winner that sent the Sox to the ALDS and the Ray’s home. Pujols and Souza did their jobs and got zero help. Of course the wind did play a factor, especially on Lux’s shot in the 9th.

      1. I jumped out of my chair when Gavin hit that ball and when I saw him leave the box convinced he knocked it out I started to celebrate… and then the wind pushed that ball back.
Oh what frustration. ONly with the Dodgers.

        Go Dodgers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      2. Talk about devil magic & the devil wind. And certainly not “the game” but Longoria hits it when the wind goes low & it goes out, Lux hits it harder ( I think ) when the wind is howling & the wind holds it up. And yes, NO ONE hit the ball much, but also to my eye it was the worst ball/strike calling yet in this series on both teams. When the ump has so much to do with what the count is vs what it should be it depresses me. Every wrong call changes things just a little every single time. Some of the called strikes were over a ball outside.
Well, all I can say is WE KNOW how to come back from being down, but not sure we will do it today & Friday, but GO DODGERS.
        cheers

  3. What do you do now today ? Who should start ?
Walker on 3 days rest or Catman ?

I would go with TG and hope he has his good stuff from the get go. Should he get into trouble I give him the quick hook and have my bullpen ready. Maybe Walker for a few innings in relief.
This is the time of year when the loss of Bauer really, really stings. He was supposed to be in this kind of spot to give us another ace.

    Go Dodgers!!!!!!!!!!!!

    1. You need Buehler for a game 5 if there is one. Gonsolin will get the nod most likely with all hands on deck. They have hit DeSclafani hard all year, and need to get to him early. Bauer has been out of the conversation since July. Bauer also gives up a lot of homers. And SF is a homer hitting team. Backs against the wall. Last year against the Braves they won 3 elimination games in a row. This time they need two.

      1. Julio would be on regular rest for a possible game 5. So that frees up WB for game 4 in some kind of availabilty.

        Go Dodgers!!!!!!!

      2. Also as previously noted, do we go after Max & TTurner as hard if “the bauer sitch” doesn’t happen? Likely not, so I will take what we have over what we would have had.
        cheers

  4. Interesting switching by Roberts; after the six inning ended he had to replace the 7 and 9 batters. Bellinger came into play first but Roberts had him batting 9th, meaning the pitchers spot would come up earlier in the game.

Come the 9th inning, Lux rewards Roberts thinking by hitting a 106mph exit velocity, 22 degree launch angle shot to left center. During the season, 55 of 62 batters would have gotten a hit. Unfortunately the winds knocked down what was a home run any other night. It also shows that Roberts didn’t want Bellinger to face 100 mph fastballs from Duval. It was good in game strategy by Roberts.

For the game the Dodgers xBA was .288 vs. .165 for SF. Some hard hit balls by LA but right at people. Seager and the two Turners have been MIA for the season.

    1. Yes very interesting as well as ping hitting Barnes with 2 runners on base and striking out on 3 straight pitches like the lousy pathetic hitter he is. This guy does not deserve to be on the Dodgers anymore or have an MLB job. He cant catch up to the fastball or come through in big spots. Pathetic player. Idiot manager by not bringing some else to hit instead of this toy soldier.

      1. There was a lefty coming in. McGee, all three of the remaining bats on the bench were left handed. And none of them hits lefty’s worth a damn. So no, the manager is not an idiot. And for your information, Barnes is one of their better pinch hitters this season and has cracked 2 HR’s and driven in 5 as a pinch hitter and was hitting .333 in those situations. And also, most of the pitchers love pitching when he is catching. Get your facts straight before you make an asinine assumption.

        1. I don’t care about the numbers OLD BEAR ./ You saw the at bat it was one of the worst at bats ever in three straight pitches . Barnes had no chance. He is mediocre hitter and catcher cant throw no one at second base. This Guy needs to go next year. He batted .215. He could not catch to the fastball. So get your common sense on. And stop the defending Roberts he is a moron

          1. No, I am pretty sure the only moron is you. He needed to save Bellinger to play first. Beaty does not hit lefty’s well at all and Lux was the only other bat on the bench. He had used Souza. So he played the percentages like ALL managers do. And Barnes has delivered for him this year. .333 avg as a pinch hitter. If there was a righty out there, he would have went to Beaty. But not against a left handed pitcher. I saw worse at bats by guys who are playing every day. Barnes has not played in a game since the end of the season. Common sense say’s Roberts made the right move. And you are talking about one at bat in the middle of the game. How about the first 6 guys in the order who went 1-22. And that one hit was a single. Souza, Pujols and Smith accounted for the other 4. When the top of your lineup stinks that badly in a game, nit picking on a pinch hitter who had been on the bench for 6 innings is about as moronic as it gets. Learn the game. And I hate to tell you this, your miniature brain will probably explode. Barnes is under contract for next season also. With Ruiz traded, there is no one in the minors who is yet ready to take his place, so you are stuck with him for another year. No catcher except maybe Molina is very good at throwing out runners. And most of those are on the pitchers who are horrible at holding runners. Not always on the catcher there bud.

          2. So then to summarize, you would NOT manage based on historical trends, or anything to do with stats. How would you manage? Based on your testosterone levels that day?

          1. Just an observation. Both Barnes & Roberts make more $$cabbage$$ than you will likely do your entire life. For as “horrible” as they supposedly are, they are sure doing SOMETHING right.

          2. Just a few of observations:

#1: You have a dumb name, but that is your business.

#2: Barnes is the backup catcher.

#3: Most pitchers prefer to pitch to him.

#4: The fact that Dodgers catchers (Barnes included) can throw out runners is more the pitchers’ fault – Many of the Dodgers pitchers are generally slow to the plate.

#5: The Giant’s backup catcher hits worse than Barnes.

Bring up Barnes today is like saying to sell the house when it is on fire. What’s your point… or is there one?

          3. OldBear i think the only Moron is you defending a player that was a good move putting the worst hitter on the team with 2 on base losing 1-0 and then this moron strikes out in 3 pitches. It seems like you want to lose . Is the post season sir ! Wake up ! Even our brilliant Blogger MT and i reallly mean it says yesterday loss was pathetic !!!!!! Wake up

          4. Is it Old Bea or Old Moron Bear ? Your comment makes no sense defending a terrible hitter like Barnes he had no chance on that at bat looked over match and not confident at all.

          5. MARK TIMMONS BARNES STINKSSS !! SO DOES YOUR COMMENT ! Ok Mr Know it All . You are only one entitled to your opinion ? The point is he sucks at hitting and in that spot Dodgers lose game he had the worst at bat of the game in crucial moment. Stop justifying Roberts stupidity and a mediocre hitter and player like Barnes.

          6. Dude, I have only been here this season, BUT ……
You might be the most illogical poster I have seen here.
And btw, Souza has a worse ba, Belli has a worse ba, etc.
You seem to literally be having a hissy fit over Bear giving you REAL info instead of your estrogen filled nonsensical rant. Barnes is over a .300 pinch hitter and was the ONLY rh batter available for an incoming lh pitcher. Nor have you even remotely defended your position. Name just WHO you would have ph with so we can “stat you” into the next plane of reality.
And to your numbnutted reply to Mark, show me where he did not allow you to post your opinion please. waiting…. waiting ….. waiting
You can post what you want, if as stupid as this subject, expect to be excoriated.
And let me know if you need help with any of the “big words”.

  5. I hope I’m wrong but I’ve been thinking this for the past two months-“ it seems to be their destiny (SF) to over throw us.”

I know many will snicker at that comment, but the way they beat us and the way they somehow figure a way to win close ball games has broken my spirit.

Even though we have won 107 games this year, it sure seems like we have been getting punched in the face a lot more than you would think.

I won’t be surprised nor upset if we lose to these guys. My gut has already told me to expect it. I sure hope my gut is wrong…

Go Dodgers, let me get the last laugh at my gut,
    TM

    1. Dodgers have won 108. 106 in the regular season, the wild card game and game 2. It was a windy night, they made some outstanding defensive plays and the first 6 hitters in the lineup went 1-22. You are not going to win with that kind of production. Anything can happen in baseball. DeSclafani is pitching for the Giants. So far this season he is 0-3 against the Dodgers. And they have hit 6 HR’s off of him. Also, he has been especially bad at Dodger Stadium. So, get to him early and often, and get ready for game 5 in SF with all hands on deck.

    2. You’re gut is a very negative influence in your life. Maybe you need to eat more probiotics.

  6. The luckiest team in baseball stole on from us last night. Don’t believe me on the luck? Watch the replay of the Longo homer and you’ll see the wind calmed down for that blast. Lux hits a seed and it’s a lazy fly ball right into a gust.

Both teams played a flawless game outside that one pitch to Longo. What are you gonna do? Mookie smoked an RBI double and Crawford is in the right spot, leaps as far as he can and comes down with it. There was a couple more. A double down the right field line early was a few inches foul. A gapper to left center and the outfielder was perfectly placed. We hit the ball harder all night and came up on the wrong side. The Giants are the luckiest team in baseball and it’s time for that luck to change.

We won three in a row against the Braves last year. It’s time for a redo.

I’m really proud of Lux’s AB late in the game. He really crushed that ball and I feel so bad for him that the wind knocked that thing down. We had a few deep flies that would have been trouble under different circumstances. Those winds were just horrible. Believe me. I’m afraid to go check out my backyard after hearing the wind rattle things around last night.

I’m a bit disappointed that Belli didn’t get an AB last night. He’s the one lefty bat that could have put one out to right field and he doesn’t even get an opportunity. I’m also disappointed that Seager didn’t show up. The guys at the top did very little against Wood.

Turn the page and go get them tonight. It will be that much sweeter when we win this thing in their yard. We’re just setting them up for bigger heartbreak. Let’s do this.

On another note. Doc is doing much better as a manager. He’s not making his signature bonehead moves, so there’s nothing to complain about there. I think he’s finally learning.

    1. Some luck for sure ( Longoria homer) but I’m not sure I’d call the SF defensive positioning luck.

    2. I don’t use the word “luck” too often…

The wind was against both teams.

The SS leaping to grab that ball was no luck.

And it doesn’t take a weatherman to know….the wind gusts come and go (higher then lower speeds) and rarely stay the same speed. Longo hit his when calmer and Lux hit his when not. Not luck, amigo….science!

But I will concede you this….there is something special in the SF water this year.

      TM

      1. No luck, but destiny? Make up your mind. It was lucky the wind was blowing when Lux hit his, and not blowing when Longoria hit his. It’s not like they used science to figure out when to swing. The grab by Crawford was a great play, two inches higher and it’s an RBI. I call that lucky, the ball was crushed and is probably a hit much more than 50% of the time. Mookie hit two balls over 100 MPH and had nothing to show for it… luck.

        1. Baseball is a game of probabilities; for example defensive positioning. Several Dodgers hit rockets within reach of the SF defense. Being where you expect the ball to be hit is not luck. As it’s been said, luck is when opportunity meets preparation. You have to give some credit to the SF analytics.

          1. Same for us. BOTH D’s stopped everything that came at them. Sounds like both teams know each other pretty well. The only way to overcome that is to either hit it over, or hit it where you usually do not.
            cheers
            pb+

          2. That’s BS. You can tilt the odds in your favor with defensive positioning. But, you can’t predict precisely where a ball will be hit. If Mookie hits that ball 2 feet to the right or left with the same height, he doesn’t get to it. If he hits it 2 inches higher, he doesn’t get to it. It was lucky that, that particular seed off Mookie’s bat found leather.

          3. So “you can tilt the odds in your favor with defensive positioning. But, you can’t predict precisely where a ball will be hit”.

That’s what probability is. You place your players where the probability is greatest (I.e., tilting the odds in your favor). Probability is not telling you precisely where it will be hit it’s where it’s most likely to be hit.

      2. Anybody here a golfer? What do you do when the wind is blowing? You adjust. You hit line drives.

The Dodgers looked like they were trying. Line drives were finding gloves. TTurner hit two shots one foul by inches, one caught by a left fielder who was standing in left center on the pitch.

        A. the giants are a better defensive team than the Dodgers B. their analytics department is equal, maybe better, than the Dodgers.

Odds say we win today. Going back to San Francisco against Webb? Gulp.

A lot has happened that would signal it just isn’t our year. But, it ain’t over yet. Never give up. Mark used to post that “never give up” picture a lot in the old days. Find it and post it Mark.

        1. Can Webb spin another gem like in game 1 ? what are the chances for that ?
If we go with Gonsolin today and give him some run support winning game 4 we could have both Julio and Walker for game 5.
I take my chances with them.

But first is first, win today. Whatever it takes. Betts, both Turners and Seager have to start hitting. If not we are probably done.

          Go Dodgers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

          1. If the Giants come into our home and punch us out….wow….this will make for a long off-season. I don’t feel good about Tony G tonight and I definitely don’t feel good we won’t get shutout again in game 5 if we are fortunate enough to have one. It seems like we have a pattern going here: shutout, breakout, shutout, hopeful breakout, and then (closing my eyes)……

But, there is some good news…. we at least get to see two of our favorite X-Dodgers, not one but two Mr Octobers whom we had to let go- KiKe and Joc- continue to shine under pressure. Too bad we couldn’t have paid them instead of Trevor. (Hindsight is awesome.)

  7. Dodgers gotta bring the bats tonite. Score 4- 5 runs and I like our chances. Then in game 5 they have to be ready to take a lot of pitches. Those sinkers and change ups from Doughboy Webb are rarely strikes. Dodgers have to have the courage to take more pitches against him.

  8. A LOT of parallels with the 2019 NATS.

They won the WC game, played the team with the best record, needed to win game 4 in their home park and game 5 on the road to knock out the team with the best record, and they did just that.

A higher power gave that game to SF last night, but I think we win this thing in 5….

    Think Positive.

    1. I was thinking the same thing.

Just win today. It’s quite doable.

And I expect Walker Buehler to start and give us 5

      1. You think Buehler starts today? Id doubt that.

We just need to support the Cat Man, its not like SF is tearing the cover off the ball.

  9. Give credit to some computer for positioning.

As to why the Dodgers didn’t hit, there is a bad fuse somewhere and the line-up shorts out. Been happening all year, feast or famine. Probably one of the reasons they lost all those extra inning games early in the season. Some writer, not a computer, did an analysis and said that if you just ended tie games with a half win for both teams, the Dodgers would have finished six games ahead in the standings.

That wasn’t wind last night at Dodger Stadium, that was a blow with 45 mph gusts. Hey baseball is a game of inches, think back to Trea Turner’s liner headed for the right field corner, a triple with his speed. Sometimes it’s just the way the ball bounces.

Something interesting came out of a Farhan Zaidi interview (Bill Shaikin, LA Times) about how the Giants arrived here so early and he said never focus on the signing of one specific player to make a difference. Lot of ways to get to a championship, he pointed out. The Giants have only $50 million on the books for 2022, the Dodgers $139 million and the Padres $151 million. That of course could change for the Dodgers, depending on what happens with Trevor Bauer’s contract.

Makes me wonder if that will be Andrew Friedman’s thinking when it comes to Corey Seager. Lot of pundits now think he won’t be back with Turner able to slide to short. Scott Boras seeking every nickel. Not a player in the game today worth $300 million.

I like the Dodgers chances tonight. If they win, it’s a rematch between Walker Buehler and Logan Webb by the bay. One game at a time, but if that happens, I like the Dodgers chances. That is, of course, if the hitters show up.

  10. I realize I’m much less interested in baseball than I am in Dodgers winning. I don’t think that’s how it’s supposed to be. It’s kinda funny that a city assembles a bunch of players from all over the world and I devote as much energy and time for those players to win and for what purpose? I can’t quite explain. How can I own these emotions of victory or failure? Got to laugh at myself for biting into something that doesn’t taste good and I had nothing to do with it’s flavor. We humans are crazy animals.

    1. Comment of the year. Very well said. It is strange. I am all-in and then when they lose it’s just over. Like or not there is a lot of variability in each year’s postseason tournament and it’s becoming even more pronounced. In the grand scheme it matters not a whit.

      1. Same here. I get torn. I am so invested having watched every single game that I get the “let’s go! let’s win it all” and then the other side “oh well, there’s around 20 hours a week freed up in my life”. SO CONFUSING! 🙂
        cheers
        pb+

      2. Yes, I agree, Quas, it is strange and wonderful to be a fan. We belong to the Dodgers tribe. And we live and die every day they play. Frankly, those ups and downs are a lot better than the normal ups and downs of this f…d-up world. In one sense I agree with you that it means nothing. And yet it gives us enjoyment, distraction, and connection with other fans. And that’s not nothing.

Regarding the game tonight, they need to stand up and kick some butt. They’ve done it before (WC game, last year against Atlanta), and they can do it again. I agree with others here that Gonsolin is the obvious choice, perhaps with an opener before him. Then rely on the bullpen. And hopefully the wind will blow our way tonight.

    2. Well said Quas.

I’ve noticed for some time now the agony of defeat tastes worse and lingers longer than the thrill of victory. Age has a lot to do with it. There’s just a lot of things that I don’t give a sh*t about anymore and sitting there staring at a team flounder for hours at a time, waiting for that one big hit, often feels like a real waste of time. I think I’d rather be reading a good book than watch the nothing part of all or nothing.

But, we carry on. Maybe tonight the all shows up and it will be another 9 run night. If not, oh well. Wait til next year.

      1. I actually usually have a book ( well kindle ) in my lap while watching. Make games go more quickly when I can read during all the down times during a game.
        cheers
        pb+

    3. That’s why I enjoy the Dodgers with Joc on the team more than when he is replaced with perhaps a better player I have no history of rooting for.

  11. This may seem overwrought, but I will say it: There is something missing in the Dodgers organization. Yes, I know that we won a whole bunch of games, we usually do. But since 1988, we have won one title, and that was in a vastly shortened season; not that we would not likely have won it anyway, but another hundred games might have led to the kind of injuries we suffered this year, or worn out our pitching staff. Who knows, but we are justifiably proud of the great title win. However, that is all we have.

Those who remember the specific playoff games better than I do, might take issue with some of this, but what I mostly remember are bitter losses, mostly where our team could not manufacture runs late in the game. I remember a series against St. Louis where we blew a 7-1 lead at home in the first game, and then could not rally. Then we went into St. Louis and lost two games on late Cardinal home runs, one by Carpenter, and then another player. We could not do anything offensively late in the games.

Then another series with St. Louis, where Kelly hit Ramirez in the ribs in the first game. We had a lead, maybe 2-0, but the Cards caught us, and then we could not score for about ten innings more, as we finally lost 3-2. Then we lost the next game by one run, maybe 2-1. Then the series against Boston, where we had a 4-1 lead or so in game four, lost the lead, and then did not score again. Then the last game against Washington. We lost the 3-1 lead, but a run in the 8th or 9th would have won it, but we could not muster anything.

Then this series against SF. Zero runs in the first game, zero runs in the third. We have outscored them 9-7, but we seem to either score lots of runs we don’t need, or score very few. Yes, I realize that other teams have good pitchers, but for all the talent we have on hand, we do not maximize it. We looked mostly helpless last night. We had a couple of chances; Crawford made a great play, the wind cut a couple of balls down, and that’s all we did. No rallies, no ground ball singles, just swinging for the home run. No sense of opportunism, we will score somehow. And for me, that is how we have somehow managed to win only the one title.

We are the franchise which resembles a very shiny car with sparkling parts, but somehow it does not drive as well as it should. I know we have had some bad injuries this year, and I know that this will be the general wrap-up to the season. “We were really good, but the Giants were better, we must tip our caps to them. And the injuries, and the Bauer situation are what cost us the title.”

What cost us the title in 2019? We didn’t win our one playoff series that year, just like we are very unlikely to win our one playoff series this year. Just bad luck? More tipping our caps to other teams? Or are we missing something? I think we are. What it is, is not so easy to discern. But even though we are always harder on our own team than others, and even though everyone loses games, and has disappointments, we are essentially the franchise which does not win big games. We almost lost last year, but Betts and Bellinger made extraordinary defensive plays, and they and Smith got key home runs. Maybe that was OUR lucky year, because now we are back to underachieving in the big games.

All we needed last night was two runs, and we got none. In the three playoff games besides the one cakewalk nine-run outburst, we have scored a total of three runs, all on homeruns. We strike out, pop up, hit ground balls right at the shifted players. We don’t seem to adjust, or adapt or strategize, we just follow our usual approach.

I think we are missing something, and unless we find it or change it, we are not going to win more titles any time soon. How can you have so many seasons where you underachieve in the playoffs, and where the other teams seem to be full of scrappy and resourceful players who find a way to win, while we do not? Do I think that this is due to Roberts? Likely not, but I do think Kapler is better, he seems to always put the right pitcher in, it has happened all season. The mark of a truly great franchise in any sport is their ability to come up big in the big games, find ways to win. The Dodgers teams from 1959-1966 mostly did that. Of course, we had Sandy Koufax. But we scrapped and executed, and “The Dodgers way to play basebal”l was a real thing. Eras change, but we are looking at six seasons of amazing regular season achievements, and very little to show for it in the playoffs.

Thanks for taking the time to read this. I’ll watch the game tonight, like everyone here. If we do lose the series, I will follow some next season, but I am not going to spend an entire six months watching an extended lead-up to another bitterly disappointing ending to the season. I just don’t think they are flukes, or bad luck, or injuries, though of course all of that is there. You really can win a baseball game and score two runs, even if the wind is blowing hard from left to right field.

    1. I did read it all. But you could have shortened it to “that’s baseball”. I have watched all games, and do not know if I will put that much into it next year, but not really because they win or lose and go or do not go to the series. It is just A HUGE commitment. All I can observe is that most MLB teams WISH they were us. Being a .500 team makes the playoffs a lot of years, being a .600 team gets you your division a lot of years. Not many sports where being a .500 team is considered “pretty good”. Baseball is HARD.

      1. Well, thanks for reading it, but my point was that it’s not “just baseball,” but that there is a pattern and reasons for our overall underachievement in the playoffs. Of course, that is just my view of it.

        1. Pretty sure that is something personal to you. Because the facts just bear out that anyone’s chances of winning the show any particular year is pretty slim. I would say you should stay a Dodger fan, because you certainly would not have made a good Cubs fan until 2016. L.A. sports is weird to me, especially since I have been out of CA for about 14yrs now. Just about any other city ( with a couple notable exceptions ) would trade their last decade with ours any day.

    2. You make a good point….in 3 of the 4 playoff games this year, we have only hit in one of them. Yes, we are missing something….guys who play better in October!

      Kike Hernandez
      Joc Peterson

      1. TM, sometimes I think you just blurt things out without any thought. It sounds like you’re responding to William who went on a tirade how we came up empty for so many years. Your solution is to bring back two guys who were on all of those teams like it would have made a difference this year. If that were the case, wouldn’t we have won in 16,17,18 and 19 when Kike and Joc were on the team?

        1. It was a simple statement- we thought it best to not try to resign two guys who usually do quite well in October.

As you can see, we are all lamenting the fact that in 3 of our 4 games so far in October, no one has hit. Shut out twice.

Not sure why that is hard for you to ponder. Do you agree those two guys play big under playoff pressure? If so, then why not try to resign them? And would we be more successful this year if we had them?

          Something to,ponder….

  12. I’ve tried to keep out of all the discussions about the Dodgers and their lack of hitting when it matters all year. Last night was a perfect example of how these guys just can’t hit when we need it. As Mark pointed out, we have outscored the Giants 9 to 7 but, per usual, we scored all of those runs in one game. That is why all of the stats have been skewed during the season. This team is and has been a feast or famine team for years. It allows us to win 100+ games but kills us in the post-season after 162 games. This needs to stop. The Dodgers need to be a base hitting team and not just a home run hitting team (those will come). Like the great Ken Griffey Jr. said: “I try to hit the ball, home runs just happen”. All the Dodgers seem to do is swing for the fences. Heck, this mindset even seems to have affected Mookie. He was a 300+ hitter (overall) before he became a Dodger. ☺

    1. The SF giants are a HR hitting team. Baseball is a game of inches. Hopefully we get those inches tonight.

    2. Giants won one more than us & they depend on the HR more than we do. I DO really like games where guys hit singles, steal bases, score on sacrifices though. Also looked at the total HR’s by all teams. In the top 10, 8 of the top HR teams made the playoffs, so IMO there IS something to be said about hitting the long ball.

  13. What lack of hitting are we talking about? The Giants had 3 hits and 14 K’s. The Dodgers had 5 hits and just 6 K’s. They hit the ball very hard that should have been hits on at least 3 more occasions I can think of off the top of my head. JT’s liner to right field, just foul. Mookie’s seed to Crawford and Lux’s wind robbed homer. They were a couple of more deep drives as well. Sometimes luck comes into play. That’s why you play 162 and why each series is at least 5 games. To combat some of that luck.

The best player for the Giants last night was the wind.

  14. 5 Dodgers known for post season heroics:
    Joc
    Kike
    Alex Wood
    JT
    Urias

Too bad three of them are playing for other teams this year and one of the remaining two hasn’t helped much.

We’re still in it until we aren’t. As others have pointed out, we needed to beat the Braves 3 straight last year and did it. Now we only need 2.

      1. Thanks Bear. Remembered that last night when I first thought of it, but forgot to include today.
So two of the three remaining “heroes” are MIA so far.
        There is time for redemption.

        1. Seager goes 3-4 with a couple of ribbies and all is forgiven as long as they win. But, they need Betts to set the table and last night he did not. I wonder if Dave jinxed them by switching Trea and Corey last night. They did good when Trea was hitting 3rd.

    1. Wow I can’t believe Stark put that together so quick ,thanks Bums
Pretty amazing stuff about Kike and Joc and I really liked the Garcia and Garcia pitches to Garcia in one plate appearance
As far as the game last night ,Mark said it all and I’m trying to put it out of my mind

    1. Is he going to have AJ or Lux in left field?
Belli or Beaty at first? Or Belli in center and Beaty at first and CT on the bench.

I’m guessing Lux in left, CT in center and Belli at first. We’re going to need some offense at the risk of giving up some defense in left field.

        1. With DeSclafani going, Belli will be back in there. I would guess if Buehler pulls this off, he uses Urias in SF for game 5. Dodgers beat him twice at Dodger Stadium this year, and he has given up 6 homers to LA> They are hitting .300 against him. Hopefully there is no wind.

          1. Yeah, no wind there and here we are getting gusts up to 45 MPH. Joc knocked in another run with a ground out to third. Braves and Brewers knotted at 4 in the 6th. Butane is going to redeem himself tonight.

  15. I had trouble falling asleep last night simply because I just could not get the game out of my head. I was not upset they lost, I was upset the WAY they lost. I would rather lose 16-0 than a 1-0 shutout.

      1. Me too. BTW , Longoria’s HR and our Colts blowing the lead happened almost simultaneously.

      2. Sport trac says that Seager’s value for next season is 31 million. They say Jansen is 10. Taylor is at 11 so he would probably jump at 18.4 if he wants to stay, or work out an extension after he accepts.

  16. The all in lineup is posted. Doc’s playing the splits by having Gavin over Pollock, starting in CF with CT3 in LF. Interesting choice after CT3 made some big grabs in CF last night.

    Mookie RF
    Seags SS
    TT 2B
    The Fresh Prince C
    JT 3B
    G-Lux CF
    Belli 1B
    CT3 LF
Walker “No Day Off” Bueller P

    1. Boy I sure hope Gavin has been working on the over-the-shoulder stuff. From the short history we have, those are his learning curve issues IMO. I do not think there is any way he makes that over-the-shoulder that Taylor made in CF last night.
      cheers

  17. Here’s some facts about the offense last night from Eric Stephan and Blake Harris at TBLA…

    https://www.truebluela.com/2021/10/12/22722743/dodgers-offense-wake-up-call-nlds-game-4

    https://www.truebluela.com/nlds-2021-dodgers-giants/2021/10/12/22722079/los-angeles-dodgers-san-francisco-giants-2021-nlds-gavin-lux-max-scherzer-mlb-postseason

On Monday, the Dodgers hit into outs on balls that had expected batting averages of .920, .890, .870, .550, and .500 (twice).

Chris Taylor looked as if he hit a home run in the sixth inning, hitting one 107 mph off the bat with an expected batting average of .920…. but it died at the warning track. That one would have given the Dodgers a 2-1 lead had it gone out.

Just a few batters earlier, Trea Turner sent one 370 feet that was nearly 100 mph off the bat, but the wind buried that one as well.

Gavin Lux hit the final pitch of the game 106.9 mph and at a 22-degree launch angle. Batters this season, on balls hit 106-107 mph and at 22-degree launch, were 55 for 62 (.887) with 38 home runs. The Dodgers had four such hits this year. All were homers.

What can be frustrating is that, sandwiched in between the two zeroes in the NLDS, the Dodgers scored nine runs in Game 2. Such feast or famine feels like it’s too common for a team that led the National League in runs scored. But is it actually true?

During the regular season, the Dodgers were shut out five times. That’s tied for the second-fewest games in MLB, behind only the Blue Jays (three times).

Held to one or fewer runs? 19 times, second-fewest in MLB, behind only the Astros (18).

Two or fewer runs scored? 41 times, tied for fifth-fewest, with among others, the Giants.

Scoring no more than three? 61 times, fifth-fewest.

Four or fewer runs scored? 76 times, third-fewest.

The point is the Dodgers offense doesn’t really get held down as often as we might think it does.

        1. A whole lotta stats and numbers don’t change two L’s to two W’s. And I don’t need to be persuauded that the Dodgers are a STILL a better, stronger, more talented club than SF, a couple of shutouts notwithstanding. MOST if not ALL of us Dodger Fans know that.. In that place where the ball meets the leather, I have TOTAL CONFIDENCE that the Dodgers can open up a huge drum of BLUE WHOOP-ASS on DeSclafani or whoever is pitching Tonite.

          1. Yes BOOBY, I just post to open open your whittle eyes. So HAPPY I succeeded!!! THANKS FoR SHARING!!! GO DODGERS!!!!! BRING ON THE BLUE WHOOP ASS!!!!

  18. After Seager 3rd out on the bottom of the 5th, what would have happen if the umprie would have found something iligal on the pitchers glove?

  19. Feast or famine? What will it be for game 5? At least they got a good look at Logan Webb recently. They should be able to make adjustments. And I have every reason to feel confident sbout Julio Urias. He is a big-game pitcher. The big question is whether the bats will show up.
