Well, the Dodgers lost last night – for the first time in 10 games – and of course, someone must be blamed. “Dave Roberts should have never started Trevor Bauer” is a theme that seems popular today. Second-guessers are never wrong! However, I guarantee the decision to start Bauer was done by “committee.” The Dodgers front office sends Dave Roberts all types of data about everything related to the game and they also talk about it, so it you want to blame someone, blame the Dodgers Front Office and avbe Roberts.
Then I hear that this team is “just a bunch of AAA players“. OK, what’s the point? The Dodgers are 30-19 with one of the best records in baseball while they have a dozen or more players on the Injured List. To top it all, their Superstar, Mookie Betts has played like a AAA player and yet here they are… near the top of the heap! If someone had told me that the Dodgers would lose Bellinger, McKinstry, Seager, May, Graterol, Price, Gonsolin, Alexander, Cleavinger, Nelson, Price, Pollock, Knebel, and Rios for the season, or for months or weeks, I would have said: “Just wait until next year.” But, here we are, in the thick of the pennant race with Mookie Betts hitting .247.
The Dodgers performance this season has been nothing short of “extraordinary.” You aren’t going to like to hear this, but it is the Dodgers’ “depth” that has kept them in this thing. Now, maybe you were expecting Sheldon Neuse to be the next Babe Ruth or Mitch White to pitch like Dennis Eckersley. Maybe you believed Edwin Uceta should have been a young Trevor Hoffman or that Alex Vesia would be a lockdown reliever. You probably thought that anything short of greatness for these rookies would be a big “fail.” What you fail to consider is that while their stats may not look the greatest… collectively, they have had their moments and contributed. That’s why the Dodgers are 30-19, not 19-30!
“Depth” does not mean that a minor league player comes in and in the MLB player of the week. Usually, he is there to put his thumb in the Dyke to help keep the water at bay. They have done that, Luke Raley, Sheldon Noisy, DJ Peters, Mitch White, Garrett Cleavinger, Alex Vesia, Edwin Useta, and Keibert Ruiz may not have “eye-popping” stats, but they have had a hand in keeping the ship from sinking. Even Albert Pujols, who has done little to make us think he can still play, was part of a 9-game winning streak. Maybe just his presence is inspiring to some.
These rookies were “rushed” to the Show, and their cup of coffee will likely help shape what they are and will become. Progress is not linear, but right about now, as Dodger fans, we have to be pretty happy with how the team has performed after being devastated by injuries. Help in on the way, Bellinger, McKinstry, and the Bazooka could be back this weekend or early next week. Gonsolin is healthy and being built up as a starter. Joe Kelly is learning how to pitch without a mass in his shoulder, Gavin Lux is starting to get the hang of MLB pitching, and David Price is learning how to pitch out of the bullpen.
Right about now, Dodgers fans should not be bitching – they should be grateful at how well this team has performed under adversity. Then, considering that Mookie Betts is hitting closer to the Mendoza line than he is his career average makes the 30-19 record even more remarkable. Hopefully, Mookie can come out of whatever funk he is in. Most likely, it is an injury, but we don’t know for sure and the Dodgers aren’t about to tip anyone off. Some of the rookies that fans think have “underperformed” will use this opportunity as a stepping stone to something better.
Kudos to Max Muncy and CT3, who are playing at All-Star Levels. Max Muncy leads all of baseball in OB% at .455. and Chris Taylor is 6th at .408. It would be nice i the Dodgers could extend him, but the reality of the situation is that someone will likely give him 5 years at $75 million or something close, if he keeps up this pace. We will enjoy him while we can.
Dodgers Minor League Report
OKC did not play yesterday, but the other three teams won.
- Tulsa Boxscore
- GL Boxscore
- RC Boxscore – The Diego Cartya Era has begun. He was 3-5 with a double and a HR in his second game at RC.

Who you calling a Dyke?
I was actually more “concerned” about the thumb in said Dyke. 🙂
This is a great article I agree with everything in it. But dike is spelled with an I and is not capitalized.
I think what others might be thinking is that this team isn’t as good as last year’s team. I don’t like to speak for others so I might be wrong.
But would this team be as good or better than last year’s team if everyone was healthy? What about if most were healthy, but not all?
I’m not a good writer so this may not make sense.
I understand and it makes sense.
At this juncture last year (after 49 games), the Dodgers were 34-15.
With all of the injuries this year (at least 20 stints on the IL in total, the Dodgers have lost 4 more games!
Four! I just gave you all a million dollars and the bag is too heavy?
The dodgers are definitely playing better. The starting rotation is at the top. The bullpen games hurt us. Doc holds back on relievers the day before and the day after seemingly. Bellinger and McKinstry coming back should help. We need a 5th starter badly. Not having one hurts our already weak bullpen. In the long run Urias innings are probably going to cut back so starting pitching could be an issue later.
I don’t know why they don’t build up price as a starter. I suppose there is a reason. We are an injury away from being in big trouble with the starters.
As Mark said we should be happy we are in the position we are in. I am but with Betts bad on offense and defense right now it is very disturbing with that long term contract. We r not going to get May, Rios, and who knows back this year. Pollock you can never count on. Seager back? Hopefully but will he be productive? I believe our pitching is very thin. Sp is great but slim. Good position now but caution ahead.
Cartaya only 19 years old and looking very , very good . Could make Ruiz a huge chip if the right trade comes along at the deadline.
Lets take 3 out of 4 from the midges over the weekend.
Padres still playing at a frightening level and pace.
Go Dodgers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
“Usually, he is there to put his thumb in the Dyke…”
What?! What kind of blog is this?
I think the issue here is that the minor leaguers who were supposed to fill in just haven’t performed. Rios, Neuse, Raley, and Peters have all had prominent roles and they’ve just been really bad. It’s nobody’s fault. It’s just the way it turned out, and I had high hopes for Neuse being a really versatile player I thought would step into that role of playing multiple positions and hitting maybe .230-.250 with some pop.. His numbers from his last year with the A’s AAA were promising.
Every good team has to have guys that step into those roles in the course of successful season. It’s essential, because over a long season injuries to starters are inevitable. It’s just part of the game. In 1988, Alfredo Griffin had an extended period on the DL (back when it was called that) and Dave Anderson played solid defense and put up respectable offensive numbers. Anderson was an unsung hero of that season and The Stunt Men were a key feature of that team. One notable feature of that team is that they never lost more than three games in a row. That was a testament to role players effectively plugging leaks.
Even recent fill ins like Kyle Garlick or Kyle Farmer were decent enough to fill a role temporarily. The Dodgers have had a confluence of multiple injuries to starters and fill ins who have performed badly. ZMack and Beatty are pleasant surprises, and they will be the key subs going forward – along with CT3 as the Zobrist supersub who plays almost every game.
AF has done a great job keeping the farm system competitive and stocked with a pipeline of players, but, although there are some impact guys in the pipeline, and it still is a top 10-15 system, it’s getting a little thin. There’s only so much a GM can do when your draft position is close to last every year for a decade – and you’re dealing pieces to build a WS winner. They fact that there is nobody who can play 1rst base temporarily while Bellinger and Rios are out means AF had to take a flyer on Pujols. Now the Dodgers are kind of stuck with him.
The Dodgers have done well to be in the position they are, but if there are some weaknesses on this team it is the depth once you get past ZMack and Beatty. I don’t fault anyone for the bullpen. Good bullpens are more about everything going right.
.190 is the new .230. If not for what Manfred did to the baseball, Noisy and others might be at .230 to .250. You cannot judge a player’s value this year. It’s just stupid what Manfred did.
That’s absolutely right Mark. OPS is down 50 (.050) points this year.
Muncy had been playing first at a gold glove level.
100% agree with Mark’s post.
It seems half the posters here have never been thru a 162 game baseball season before. This isn’t the NFL and 16 games! The negative bitching is actually quite comical to read, but then I do question if this is is how they react to anything negative in life as well.
If the entire team were 100% healthy all year, and we were 30-19, a .612 winning %, and on pace for 100 wins, I’d be happy. But we’re 30-19, a .612 winning %, and on pace for 100 wins while suffering thru tons of injuries AND with Mookie playing well below his standards all year??? This is an unbelievable record!!
Roberts, AF, and the rest of management should also be held responsible for the Padres winning day after day, after day, etc., etc., etc. Time for everyone to accept the fact that the Padres are for real, and that they are likely to remain at or near the top for the remainder of 2021.
The Padres are better than I expected, but I do not believe they can sustain it.
On the move:
Ryan Pepiot struck out a career-high eight in 3â…“ scoreless innings, and in four starts this season has a 38-percent strikeout rate to go with a 1.17 ERA. He will be moving to Tulsa soon. He is on a fast track.
Andy Pages (youngest player in the league) who skipped Low-A took a while to adjust, but he is on a roll now. He hit a monster 422-foot blast last night. He will end up at Tulsa soon.
Diego Cartaya’s swing looks like a mirror image of Cody Bellinger. He swings that bat like a whip and while I could not find his HR last night, I did see his double. He will be in GL soon enough.
Miguel Vargas is looking like a man among boys at GL.
25-year-old Cameron Gibbens, a 6’8 right-hander from Australia with a 56-percent strikeout rate and an 0.87 ERA in seven relief appearances with Rancho Cucamonga, was promoted to Great Lakes.
Mark, I looked at the Tulsa box score and it shows Pepiot pitching for them yesterday. Did you mean that he’ll be moving to OKC soon?
Long season. So far so good. Bellinger back Saturday, McKinstry Sunday. Others soon to follow. Thinking Mookie breaks out soon. Three out of four against the Giants would be a good thing.
This team is absolutely better than last year’s team. It’s outstanding that we are where we are in the standings with all the injuries and a World Series hangover. The team has played without many players for most of the season including Gonsolin, Bellinger, McKinstry and Graterol.
It’s still going to be about a month before we’re full strength as Seager has been out less than two weeks with 6 weeks recovery time.
Right about now, I’m thinking that TsuTsoGo and Big Al have as much chance of being on the late season or post season roster as DJ Peters. I just don’t see them going more than a month or so with their current production.
Grateral, Belli and ZMack are due back soon with Gonsolin and Pollock right behind them. Then, we’re going to get a glimpse of what this team really looks like.
Be patient, there’s still about two months to evaluate this team before the deadline.
I think we have already seen what this team can be at full or near full strength when they started the season at 13-2. And, that’s with minimal production from Muncy, Bellinger, and Betts. The starting pitching has been the savior for the team in that it protected a crumbling bullpen. It was discouraging during the 5-15 period because of the hot start. But, their winning has improved despite the number of AAAA players being used. To take the entire season so far as a whole the Dodgers have done damn well considering the injuries to key players. Hell, 38% of the starting position players including two MVP candidates have been out of the lineup recently. Add in Mookie not playing up to expectations.
I to think the Padres will fade later in the season due to injuries and lack of depth or lack of experience in dealing with a pennant race. Hopefully, we can continue to bring the Giants back to the reality that they aren’t really good enough yet to contend.
It should be an exciting season. Good health to all.
In The Athletic, Mookie Betts says he is not injured and that health is not to blame. He ended by saying:
“Sometimes you may just get hot for two weeks and we’re not having this conversation,” Betts said. “It’s not making a lack of effort or anything. I’m putting in my work, doing everything I can to work on my game. So we’ll just see.”
Yeah, I was thinking about Mookie’s season so far during last night’s game. Without any stats or research it seems he’s swinging at way more pitches out of the zone and missing pitches in the zone that he didn’t miss. He also looks pull happy which isn’t his deal when he’s right. Today the article in the Athletic addresses his struggles and I’m happy he’s not reporting health reasons. I was also thinking that I wouldn’t want to be a pitcher when he breaks out. Some nice warm summer month he will go on a hot streak that will be fun to watch and make us all forget his current struggles.
I see in celebration of his career achievements, Joe West is making a one man crusade to stop pitchers from adding foreign substance to the baseball. Whether you agree that there needs to be a crackdown or whether you don’t, isn’t the point. But leave it to Country Joe to open this can 2 games in a row and tossing the Card’s Skipper. He typically rationalized his actions by reporting he just wanted to keep the pitcher in the game and not accuse him of cheating. The real issue is what a shit-show MLB is on this one. Joe West is personally making a statement while Manfred and the boys are scurrying around collecting evidence. Again, another clandestine operation by MLB to what end? This doesn’t have to be an investigation, does it? Call it by the rule book or ignore it as they’ve been doing – except Joe West. It shouldn’t be one umpire trying to make a statement while Manfred plays James Bond.
Totally agree. There are rules. Despite Manfred’s lack of interest for the game of baseball the rules are to be followed. The rules are not suggestions. I think West has been ego manic throughout most of career with a “look at me and what I can do by throwing out players that fans pay money to watch” attitude. But, good for him for calling out the abuse and disregard of the rules by pitchers. Did a directive come from MLB front office? It wouldn’t surprise me being that Manfred and his minions are gutless and have little regard for the game. Maybe, other umps will do the same and try to clean up this abuse.
The paraphrase Freud, sometimes a slump is just a slump. But they seem to be a lot more painful and protracted when they hit a star level player. I’m really kind of amazed that his slump went on this long. But there again that’s just the elevated expectations I have for the man.
Coke is it
He’s already missed time with a sore back and most recently a shore shoulder. His throw home last night was crap. I don’t think he’s being forthcoming. Sounds like he’s trying not to make excuses.
Not only Betts but Turner has been in a slump during this latest run. It’s pretty amazing considering all the missing pieces. Starting rotation has been just phenomenal! And the back end of the pen has been awesome as well. Can’t wait till all the pieces get healthy and productive, then look out!
I know Turner’s going to come out of his slump. I know Mookie is going to come out of his slump. It’s just that we’ve seen Turner do it a few times. With Mookie it’s kind of like ,oh my god he’s in a slump! Will he EVER come out of it????
The thing about starting Bauer yesterday. We all know what a shrinking violet Bauer is, and he was probably near tears when he was told he was starting. And that an overbearing Doc had to browbeat Bauer into taking the assignment. You’re in the big leagues now, kid!
You have quite an imagination. Where do you come up with this stuff?
The question was why wasn’t Bauer given more rest after his 125 pitch game. Because he NO DOUBT didn’t want any more rest and wanted to pitch. And blaming Doc or management is stupid. There I spelled it out.
You spelled it out like a dyslexic. 6 innings two runs isn’t good enough for you?
I wanted them to have the bullpen game yesterday because I thought it would make sense to have your 4 starters pitch when the Giants are guaranteed to lose with a Dodgers win. I also thought the bullpen was well rested, especially after Kershaw went deep. But I’m not going to pretend there was some argument between Bauer and Doc about what game he was going to pitch next. Or, that it was out of line to pitch him on 4 days (normal) rest.
Mirror mirror. I’m not complaining about Bauer at all. But I give Dox in management more credit than most of people here. That’s not to say you might be right.
Dodgers Will Throw Another Bullpen Game Tonight Against the Giants
by Brook Smith
The Dodgers are going to stick with a 4-man rotation for a while. That seems to be the case with them waiting on Tony Gonsolin to be ready. When Dustin May went down for the season with Tommy John surgery, Dave Roberts suggested the final spot wouldn’t fill until Gonsolin was ready to go.
The latest update is that Tony will need 2 more rehab starts until the Dodgers consider bringing him back into the rotation. That means he is just over a week and a half away from returning at the minimum. As such, Los Angeles will go with another bullpen game this week.
The Dodgers start a 4-game series with the Giants tonight in Los Angeles. It will be a team of relievers taking down the bulk of the innings for Dave Roberts as he keeps his starters on normal rest. And while he has not named an official opener, David Price seems to be the leading candidate.
Mookie Betts career ba is .298 in 2017 he hit .264 for the year. He is not far off that now. He should be in the prime of his career. No way he is injured unless he is hiding it. The dodgers are not going to pay that kind of money and play him hurt. He had one great year. He is an above average player who is playing average at the moment. We expect more but we may not get it.
We need bellinger back which I think would help mookie on defense. Why? Because he could settle in rf and not be moving back and forth. We would then have 2 gold glovers in the of. Betts is above average but bellinger can b a top 5 player. Bellinger at his best has speed, power, great d, hits above average. If he plays to ability the Dodgers will be getting back as good of player as there is in the league. Even not at his best he can beat u with his speed and glove.
It is nothing short of remarkable that we are playing so well, given all of the injuries. Mark is right: This team is built for depth. I assume that the strategy of the bullpen games is to avoid overtaxing the starters to avoid injuries. Very sensible long-term planning. The Padres are for real, no doubt. A short series with them would be a crap-shoot. I like to think that our starting pitching would be a deciding factor, but I’m not exactly objective. You got to love Joe Kelly, by the way. If he ever gets his control together, watch out! In the meantime, we can enjoy his attitude!
On another note, I would like to volunteer to be the guinea pig and test out that “heavy bag theory”. Willing to take one for the team.
I’ve done it and it’s a lot of fun.
Notes I found on Internet:
The Dodgers have scored 108 runs with 2 outs this year, tops in Baseball.

Jacques Pederson: How well do internal prospect rankings line up with public lists? I assume the Astros had their own rankings for other teams.
Kevin Goldstein: Everyone has their own rankings, and they tend to wildly differ from public lists.
Jason: Are organizations preparing for the possibility of robo umps? (For example, drafting poor pitch framers higher.) Or will most wait until it’s closer to happening?
Kevin Goldstein: Yes. Many are preparing for automated strike zone. Over/under is probably 2023.
From Ben Clemens Chat
Guest: Are we seeing max Muncy? He’s been on a hot streak.
Ben Clemens: This might even be super-max Muncy. He’s locked in at the plate in a way I haven’t seen someone in quite a while. Not just hitting the ball hard, but swinging where he can do damage and such. It’s quite impressive
Appa Yip Yip: If Mike Trout was teleported, as is, back to the 1920s what would his slash line look like?

Ben Clemens: Oh man, I have no idea how to think about this but I’m going to say something absurd. Like .450/.550/1.200

I see Ohtani is pitching today. Might have to do some channel flipping.
Yes the Dodgers have been beset by injuries. Yes they have a lot of AAA players who have no business being on a major league roster playing and none too well. If you want to call these AAA players “depth” then I guess the Dodgers have depth.
Neuse – .189/.204/.377, 20 K in 53 AB
Peters – .182/.400./.273, 11 K in 22 AB
Raley – .182/.280/.273, 16 K in 44 AB
Rios – .078/.217/.137, 18 K in 51 AB
Tsutsugo – .176/.263/.176, 9 K in 17 AB
Pujols – .200/.231/.320, 6 K in 25 AB.
Cleavinger – 1 – 3 , 4.50 ERA, 2.0 WHIP, 6 IP
Santana – 0 – 0, 6.00 ERA, 1.93 WHIP, 15 IP
Uceta – 0 – 2, 5.87 ERA, 1.83 WHIP, 7.6 IP
Vesia – 0 – 1, 6.83 ERA, 1.29 WHIP, 7 IP
White – 0 – 0, 1.87 ERA, 1.70 WHIP, 7.7 IP
If they can’t play it’s not depth – it’s cannon fodder.
The Dodgers have the record that they have because they have the best starting pitching in MLB.
Here are my thoughts on this.
What Mark said.
We talk like we are the only team with injuries, but…
(from the Athletic) As this week opened, the Padres had the best record and largest run differential in the National League and had 11 pitchers on the I.L. The Mets were in first place with four starting pitchers on the list, not to mention four critical everyday players. The Rays had the second-best record and lowest payroll in the American League and had 10 pitchers on the I.L. Francisco Lindor, Seager and Javier Baez had started fewer games at shortstop than Freddie Galvis, and the game’s poster boy, Fernando Tatis Jr., had started fewer games than 27 other shortstops. The game is on a record pace for the highest percentage of innings thrown by relievers, and the real crunch of returning to a 162-game season after the 2020 stop-and-start won’t fully be felt until teams round the three-quarters/120-game pole in the third week of August.
Um, what?
Nobody talks like we are the only team with injuries. Not here at least.
What are you guys complaining about? We have injuries and still have the third best record in baseball. Do you honestly believe we’re at risk of missing the playoffs, or even not winning the division or having the best record in MLB when it’s all said and done?
The fact of the matter is there’s one team with a better record in the NL and that’s the Padres. They’re also more healthy than we are. I think we’re better when we get our guys back. If you all think they’re better, so be it. We’ll see how that plays out.
Looking forward to the game tonight against the Giants. I’ll say the same thing that I said last time. They should let Price keep pitching until he’s out of gas. It was BS that they pulled him after 2 last time.
Well, I was looking forward to it until I saw the lineup.
We better make some hay now. When I look at our draft position I just don’t know how we keep pace. Many of the teams like the pirates just don’t intend to compete. We have no help essentially at triple a. When Gray gets healthy there is one. Ruiz 2
Our farm system just looks weak right now. I just don’t know how AF can keep us up top with no top choices. I understand why he would try to get neuse, vesia, etc etc to try to add some guys who might be able to help later.
In Tulsa you got Busch hitting .240, and a couple of our other top prospects hitting less than .200. We just don’t have much close to the bigs or even starring at their level.
AF is shrewd and he better be because the pads are moving on and I suspect that the giants will make a big splash next year. I know this year is the focus but when the dodgers website brought up the draft it was depressing so we need to go this year.
Gonna need to get it done in the first four spots tonight! That is one weak lineup tonight with Betts and Turner struggling!
So that was the throw in guy with Betts? Wow! Price was electric tonight! Stretch him out!
I don’t understand why Price was taken out of the game.
Thinking the same thing myself.
Three batter minimum rule with the thought that with two outs and nobody on it is a safe move.
Same thing done with Joe Kelly.
Not that I agree with it.
Not that I agree with taking Price out that early is what I meant. I liked the manipulating the 3 batter minimum rule strategy.
So much for the Betts Turner slump!
Please Joe. Throw the fastball more often!!!!!
DJ says “take that Cassidy”! Why would you ever throw anything but a fastball to Peters? Happy for the young man!
I just wanted to check in with the DJ Peters fan club here. Also known as the hole in the bat club. Go DJ! You are going to end up in the bigs somewhere. Even if it’s not with the Dodgers!
Doc and Dodger Bullpen bullpen getting it done. I wish we could go back and look at some of the comments made here about Muncy . That would be funny as hell. I think hes gonna wake up some of the other slumbering hitters.
I’m just glad Mark can’t go back and dig up all the stupid things we’ve said. Right Mark?
Yeah you’re right. We’ll leave that up to wives and girlfriends.
Who’s the next Dodger going to bust out??
Headline: ROBERTS BULLPEN STRATEGY PAYS OFF. Dodgers edge Gnats on Muncy, Peters homers.
Pujols doubles
Who is that guy wearing Kenley’s uniform?!!!! Is there a better back three right now than Gonzalez, Treinen and Jansen. Now if only Roberts could manage a bullpen!
That really was sweet. Like the KJ of old. I’m going to give Doc credit for where the team is at.
Good for DJ. Like I have said he really seems to only have a shot at pitches down. Wood threw him one down.
Kelly and Kenley looked good. I think I’m looking forward to Belli and Zmac returning. I’d like to see McKinstry get a lot of time at 2B until Seager comes back.
