The Light at the End of the Tunnel…

Turns out, it WAS a train!

Be careful what you wish for (Kenley Jansen) – you might get it!  Kenley sure has had some dramatic losses for us this year.  I blame his Doctors – they said he could pitch.  It was obvious he could not! Malpractice is what it was!

According to Ken Gurnick of Dodgers.com, Jansen may have been too amped up:

Jansen said he was so excited to be activated, he might have been a little too excited.

“The first two hitters, I wasn’t in my comfort zone,” Jansen said. “I think I tried to maybe be amped up to be back and try hard and everything flattened out. I definitely didn’t come back too soon. Stuff happens, but you’ve got to move forward. Tomorrow, if I have a shot, same hitters, I’m looking forward to it.”

Well, I guess that happens, but this stuff can’t happen much longer – not just the blown saves, but the failure to hit with RISP.  The Dodgers are 2-1/2 games out and theres not much margin for error.  It was just one game, but there aren’t that many left! The fact of the matter is:  Jansen has lost 4 games and blown 3 saves this season!

To those who think Roberts is FAZ’s puppet, are you watching what this genius (I use that with sarcasm) is doing?  FAZ is giving him all the data every game and he continues to do stupid stuff.  Gomber is death to RH hitters, so Doc lines up his three worst RH hitters in a row:  Hernandez, Taylor and Barnes.  Dave Roberts thinks he is the smartest person in the room, when he not even in the top 75%.  He’s not FAZ’s  puppet – he’s a contrarian – he does stuff just because he thinks he’s smarter than they are.  It’s going to cost him his job!

Rants and Raves

  • Austin Barnes body language screams “Please walk me – I can’t jump out of a boat and hit water!” Kike ands CT3 are all-or-nothing players… mostly nothing!
  • I do not think Alex Verdugo is a solution (long-term) to play CF, but he can play there for a while.  The Dodgers need his OB% bat in the lineup, like NOW!  What is the holdup?
  • el Gasolino has not given up a hit or run his last 4 appearances, spanning 5.1 innings.  That’s a start.  He is starting to pitch… not just throw.
  • Maeda looked comfortable out of the pen.  Wood was not comfortable as a starter.  I think Chicken Strip will take Wood’s spot when he comes back.  Wood is better suited to the bullpen right about now.
  • CT3 and Kike:  Only one should be on the roster – they are the same player right about now… unless one decided to adopt Bellinger’s approach.
  • These guys better get busy – time is running out!

  1. The ball will unfortunately find Muncy’s defensive position at critical times in the game but his bat is back to finding the ball again at critical times.
    .
I am learning to like solo home runs. They have a much higher chance of scoring a run on this Dodger team.

  2. Not raising the white flag on 2018 yet, but if KeeKee and CT 0 for 3 are both on the club next year I’ll be utterly disappointed. They are the same player, bust or boom. Austin Barnes will never be a full-time ML catcher, dude cannot hit.

  3. I have done a complete 180 on Dave Roberts. I was once supportive, but I am no longer. I concur with Mark that Roberts is not a FAZ puppet, but if the Dodgers do not make the playoffs and Roberts keeps his job, some of those conspiracy theories are going to rise to the top. BEFORE the game started, some on this site pointed out that right handed batters cannot hit Gomber (and his reverse splits), and yet the lineup included Kike’, CT3, and Deer In The Headlights Barnes right before the pitcher. The same information (and undoubtedly much much more) that was available to Roberts, and was discussed before the game by fans, was not paid attention to by Roberts when the lineup was created, or as Mark alluded to, Roberts ignored the information because he believes he is smarter than the information. Why wasn’t Muncy in the lineup or Joc or Puig? All were better options than who played. They certainly could not do any worse than Kike’ or CT3.
    .
Right now there is no reason to believe that Kike’ is the next JD Martinez or that CT3 will come out of his year long slump and cure his inability to consistently put bat to ball. Time is running out, and the way the team is going there is no reason to REST players for October, because right now they will all be resting IN October. The team does not have the time to wait for September to expand the rosters and TRY something different. Option CT3 to OKC until September and bring up Verdugo. Maybe he is not the long term solution for CF, but right now he is good enough. I know MJ strongly prefers Toles to Verdugo but I still like the long term offensive potential of Verdugo. He is 4 years younger than Toles and will only get better (or should). He was getting more comfortable in his last recall. Put him in CF and DO NOT take him out. Live or die with Verdugo. FAZ is already on that train with the bullpen, might as well increase the risk.
    .
While not now, I do think September is a time to let Tim Locastro try to unseat Kike’ as the utility player. I keep Kike’ over CT3 because of his obvious defensive strengths over CT3, but in September, Kike’ should be a defensive substitution only and a RH pinch hitter against LHP or against MadBum. Admittedly, Kike’ would be HOF if he could bat only against MadBum.
    .
I think most on this site know that I am a big Alex Wood fan. Many who do not think highly of Wood try to evaluate him as if he were an Ace rather than a back of the rotation starter, which is what he is. But I am far more of a TEAM fan than a fan of the individual. I do believe that Alex would be a much better help for the team as a reliever for the next 37 games. Early last year, I wrote that I believed that Wood and Stripling could be the L-R version of Andrew Miller, and I still do. Unfortunately, pitchers like Andrew Miller need to fall on their face and get released BEFORE logic and reality sets in. That has not happened to Wood or Stripling. However, Stripling looks to have added even a #4 pitch and that should keep Stripling in the rotation. Again, because I believe in the team more than the individual, I believe that Wood has value as a starter and could be used as a lead in a winter trade package.
    .
In the last thread, Adam suggested that Mark and/or I look at possible fixes for 2019. I have been making my notes and working on something, but I do not want to write about 2019 until 2018 is over. I know things look bleak right now, but until the team is eliminated, I cannot give up hope. I can still vent and get frustrated with Roberts’ lineups and bullpen moves, but I still believe this team will turn things around and somehow find a way to get into the playoffs.

    1. AC

This team’s problem is not getting on base, it is getting hits, when runners are in scoring position.

The team had 13 runners in scoring position last night, and they only managed two hits.

And that was only how many runners were in scoring position last night, not how many hitters got on base.

And if you look at Verdugo’s numbers in these situations, they go down quite a bit, and Toles’ numbers goes up.

Verdugo is just hitting a little over 300 in these situations, and his OPS is only 760.

Toles is hitting just under 400 in these situations, and his OPS is in the 1000s, in these situations.

And I don’t know what Verdugo’s numbers were last year in these situations, but at the major league level this year, his numbers were not good.

And look at Toles’s numbers in these situations every time he has been up, in 2016, 2017, and 2018.

If a hitter is that good, shouldn’t they excell in these situations in games?

      1. I forgot this.

Even though Toles has had almost 80 less at bats, Verdugo only has six more RBIs, then Toles.

      2. I’m a Toles fan, too, MJ. Not by as wide a margin as you,
but I would still prefer him over Verdugo right now, from
very limited observation over the last two seasons…

  4. I agree with most of what you say. Doc just cannot put the best 8 players on the field at the same time. Doc is just too nice. He tries to keep everybody happy. It does not, nor will it work. Kiki, Joc and Taylor should not be starting. Next year, Joc, and Taylor must go. Muncey only stays if they have the DH. Verdugo should of been up a month ago, but they do not want to offend, Joc, Kiki, or Taylor. Doc does not have the guts to do what needs to be done. The fat lady will start singing prety soon. I do not know if they can pull it out in Sept. unless Doc changes. We have the players to win it all, but the wrong manager. He is too nice.

  5. Why do managers continue to put closers in a a non- closer situation. Their mind set is coming in and closing out a game, not maintaining it. You can tell the difference just by looking at the expression on their faces. Stupid move, have a little faith in the rest of the bullpen and use the closer for the closer role!!

  6. I don’t keep up with this stuff, but is it possible that Verdugo is being kept at OKC to limit his time with the Dodgers in an attempt to slow down his MLB clock? Or is it just a maturity issue?

In any case, unless there’s an underlying reason, it makes litttle sense to keep a player with Verdugo’s skill set down on the farm.

    1. IMO, it is not a MLB clock issue. It is a numbers issue, as in number of OF on the 25 man. Joc, Kemp, Belli, CT3, Kike’, Puig all play significant OF for the ML team. I think they are waiting for 10 days when the roster can be expanded and not have to DL or option any of the existing OF on the MLB 25 man.
      .
One other factor that I do believe is present is that FAZ favors the HR more than contact. Verdugo’s offensive asset is his ability to make contact, not to go yard. The current 6 ML OF on LAD all have the ability to hit HRs. Other than Kike’, all of the players have hit 20+ HRs in a season, and Kike’ could get there in 2018. Verdugo is not a 20 HR guy, more like 12-18 (in a good year). The same is true for Toles.

      1. I completely agree with AC that this front office values power, over most anything.

But it is not good to have all the same type of hitters, in a line up.

It takes away from the team, scoring consistently.

It is better for a team to have more then one way to score runs.

  7. We hit a lot of hard balls yesterday earlier in the game, but just right at guys. Great job coming back, but and DeJong robbed Kike of a 2 out RBI in the 5th as well. But Bellinger’s bases loaded no out pop up was weak. He was hot coming in, but was horrible last night. Hopefully he gets it back today.

We’re 2.5 out, and lots of folks here are frustrated . Enjoy the next 6 weeks!! If we don’t get to October, the rest of us will join the vent sessions with you. If we do get to Oct, then get your bp meds ready!

    1. Bobby, I am not sure how old you are, but I believe frustration gets a little more pronounced the older we get. I knew of the Dodgers in ’58, but the first year I truly remember following the team was in ’59. I have been to at least one WS game in ’63, ’64, ’66, ’74, ’77, ’78, ’81, and ’88. After 8 WS in 26 seasons, and winning 4, then only 1 WS in 30 years and that being a loss, time is now a consideration. I do not believe that it gets any easier next year. So yes, I do get frustrated with a team that was favored to get back to a WS in 2018 and is currently 8th in the NL and 14th in MLB. But I do not quit on them. Please do not equate frustration to giving up. At 66, and friends leaving this world, I have no idea how much time is left (although I am counting on at least another 30). However, I am not as sure for my brain scans. I have no desire for my grand kids to tell me the Dodgers finally won a WS, and I have no idea what they are talking about. So let’s get hot for the last 37 games and playoffs and beat whoever comes out of the AL for a WS title and a parade.

        1. I’ll be 47 in Oct. Been a fan since 83. My first frustration came when Neidenfuer gave up that home run to Jack Clark in 1985 haha. I’m there with most of you guys. I was a game 7 last year, and I’ve only been to 3 games this season because I’m not over losing game 7 yet. This year will either frustrate me to no end if we don’t make it, or tease me like no other if we get to the final 4 and don’t win it.

Either way, I still think we’re good enough (partly because the NL isn’t that great) to get back to the World Series. Let’s see if we do it. It is frustrating not doing what we’re capable of, but we all know most years, the best team of 162 games doesn’t win it all. The team playing the best in mid-late October wins it all. SF is the prime example of that.

  8. Andrew Friedman never done anything in Tampa Bay Farhan zaidi never accomplish anything in Oakland Dave Roberts is not a leader or a manager. This Dodger team will be watching the World Series at home like I will he doing. I am a die-hard Dodgers fan and it hurts to watch this team night after night doing the same thing over and over to lose a game we are all Dodger fans. Machado would be the spark plug like JD Martinez did for Arizona but it has not happened yet hopefully September will kick in for him I want this season 2 end like yesterday and get on with the offseason and hopefully the owners of the Dodgers will hire a good leader to get us a World Series and a parade in Los Angeles.

    1. Friedman got the Rays to the playoffs with one of the lowest team salaries EVER. They had no money.

Zaidi was never a GM in Oakland.

  9. FAZ likes the SO, walks and HR. That is their MO. Verdugo does not fit in their thinking. I know the game is changing and I do not like it. The outfield should consist of Kemp, Puig, Verdugo and Toles. The infield is set. Barnes should only play to give Grandal a rest.

They started to steal some bases. I am happy. However, I firmly believe the players are doing this on their own. It is nothing Doc has done. This tells me something about Doc’s leadership. The players are losing faith in Doc.

Next year. Trade CT, Puig, Joc and Barnes. Sign Grandal, Kershaw and Ryu. Let Wood walk. Kershaw, Beuhler, Ryu, Hill and Urias for starters. Let Maeds be your 8th. Inning guy. Rework his contract. Stripling and Ferguson in the pen. That way Ferguson, Maeda, and Stripling could be starters if we have some injuries.

Last, get rid of Doc. I think he has lost this team. He does not have the make up to be a manager. He never gets upset. Sometimes you have to get thrown out of a game. Doc is a nice guy, but that is where it ends.

    1. If FAZ doesn’t value Verdugo, why have they steadfastly refused to even consider trade offers for him?

  10. Trade CT, Puig, Joc and Barnes.- might get a box of krispy kremes for this group

    1. Those guys actually have considerable value… and I am open to any trade. You just have to find a partner who wants your guy and has what you want.

I think Barnes is just having a bad year – I think he is a solid backup catcher and will continue to be. I think he will hit somewhere in-between this year and last year. I would keep Barnes.

Kemp has little trade value. I will wait and see how he finishes before I decide on him. The Dodgers might be able to unload $7 million of his deal, but that might be it. As much as I like Dozier, he is on the wrong side of 30. I would focus on signing Machado…. IF he finishes hot!

I would give Grandal the QO and if he doesn’t take it, I would focus on getting JT Realmuto. I would think Jeter would want Puig and Alvarez and Estivez as well as Smith (I might trade Ruiz).. Puig would be a big hit in Miami.

      My lineup next year:
      1. Verdugo RF
      2. Seager 2B
      3. Machado SS
      4. Bellinger 1B
      5. Turner 3B
      6, Realmuto C
      7. Muncy DH
      8. Toles/Kemp LF
      9. Taylor CF

  11. I like Doc, but if he is responsible for these lineups then he should be held accountable. The team is under performing. The Kenley DL trip might have been the death blow to this team after surviving injuries to Seager, Turner, and Puig.
    ~
Muncy has a nice series in Seattle and the pitchers splits say that Muncy should be starting and either Taylor or Kike on the bench. Puig has a big situational hit Sunday vs Seattle. The type that everyone is crying for. He’s hitting .300 ish since May 1st and he’s sitting on the bench for Kemp, Kike, and Taylor. Barnes played the day before and he’s out there again. Maybe Wood likes throwing to him. I don’t know, but if you’re starting him then why in the world are you pinch hitting for him in only the 6th inning. The guy looks defeated when he walks into the batters box. I have no idea what happened to last year’s Barnes, but either sit him like you should or let him play until later in the game. Kemp, Kike, Taylor, Barnes, pitcher looks like smooth sailing for a pitcher after getting past Bellinger.
    ~
I’m not advocating playing Muncy everyday because I do believe the ball will find him, but the numbers last night screamed Muncy to every sabremetric nerd out there. Wood wasn’t sharp last night. You could tell from the first batter. He threw two high flat change-ups to Carpenter to start the game. He was lucky they weren’t jacked out of the stadium. I don’t know how many times Doc has chosen to not pinch hit for a pitcher this year and then wind up pulling him the very next inning. It seems like a lot though.

    1. Bobby

I was just talking about him.

I thought if we didn’t have so many players to plug in the line up, he would be great off the bench.

But I didn’t know his injury issues.

Because we all know he can hit!

  12. I agree Mark that FAZ has not traded Verdugo. However, how do you explain why Verdugo has not been brought up. Kemp and Puig are the only two outfielders who are hitting and they are not hitting much. You could bring up Toles and Verdugo to help. They will not because that means CT, Kiki, Joc or someone else has to go. They do not have the courage to make a decision. Toles and Verdugo will be up in Sept., and by then it may be to late.

  13. Allegedly the Dodgers claimed Bryce Harper, but the Nats didn’t want to play ball.

    1. If the Dodgers did claim him, unless the Nats trade him to the Dodgers they are stuck with him. Waivers can only be revoked one time in August. The Nats will QO Harper and get a supplemental pick. I do not know if the Dodgers did claim Harper if it was to make sure that no other contender would get him.

  14. Well the Nationals have thrown in the towel. I guess it wasn’t Dusty after all. Matt Adams, Daniel Murphy, and Bryce Harper were all placed on revocable waivers but were claimed, and pulled back. The Cubs claimed Daniel Murphy and have worked out a trade with the Nats. The Cards claimed Matt Adams and have worked out a trade with the Nats. So far there is no word on who claimed Harper.
    .
The way the waivers work is that, in this instance, the last place team in the NL (Padres) gets 1st shot and that continues through the NL first, and then same procedure in the AL. The Dodgers are the 8th place team in the NL, and the last seven are not real playoff contenders and are not going to claim rentals. Thus the Dodgers have the first shot at any NL contender for any NL player placed on revocable waivers. Obviously the Dodgers did not place a claim on Murphy or Adams. I am not sure how Adams helps the Cardinals. But since August, Murphy is batting .324/.343/.456/.799 for the Nats, which is more reflective of his prior three years. Joe Maddon will find a way to utilize Murphy’s bat. The Cubs are now the clear favorite with Hamels’ lights out pitching and another bat.
    .
I think I would kick the tires on Matt Harvey and move Wood to the bullpen. He has pitched reasonably well with the Reds with the exception of two games (Pittsburgh and Nationals) who the Dodgers do not face again. However, his last two games were wins against the DBacks and Giants. He pitched well going 7.0 against the DBacks and 6.1 against the Giants. He took a No-Hitter into the 6th against the Giants. Like Verdugo last year, and Hamels this year, maybe the veteran will get his competitive juices flowing for a playoff run for the Dodgers. RIght now, really what will it hurt?

      1. As I stated above, I would be curious if they claimed Harper because they wanted to work out deal with the Nats for Harper, or if they wanted to block any other contender from claiming him.

      2. To make it more interesting, for the month of August, Harper is batting .368/.434/.676/1.111. He looks like he is locked in on his salary drive. Depending on what assets need to be moved, I would add Harper.

        1. Scratch that. According to reports, waiver claim has expired and Harper can no longer be traded and still be on the playoff roster.

      1. Ok… you make a good point, I take that back.

This team is frivolously run by a bunch of ass clowns!

        1. ya I”m not sure if you’re serious ( sure hope not), or frustrated over something, but that is a pretty ridiculous statement

          1. Ha! A little from column A… a little from column B.

Intentionally ridiculous, strategically hyperbolic, unfailingly cathartic.

        2. If Freidman were to leave the Dodgers there would be about 27 teams bidding for him.

  15. AC might be right that Verdugo will end up being a 12-18 HR guy. But he also might produce a whole lot of extra base hits. I can imagine him hitting a whole bunch of doubles. And maybe with maturity the 22 year old gets to 20+ HRs. But last I looked he was hitting .335 with a .390 OBP. And let’s not forget his accurate rocket arm. I still like Puig, but I would trade anyone in the right deal. But it certainly wouldn’t hurt to have both those arms in our outfield.

And if I ever get a brain scan, it’s pretty certain that they would find a perfect vacuum.

    1. We will get them tonight, it is just to bad Kenley had to face Gyorko, right away.

Because that was not the first pitch Gyorko has hit out, against Kenley.

And that pitch was pretty high!

  16. Just saw the stuff about Harper after my previous post. I definitely think a deal for Harper is something the Dodgers should think about, depending of course, on the price in talent.

If the Dodgers included Verdugo in a Harper deal, then it would be incumbent on them to seriously pursue BOTH Machado and Harper this winter. I’m not sure they would do that considering the rising costs for Seager, Bellinger and others over the next several years.

And I agree with Mark that pursuing Dozier this winter may not be a good idea considering his age.

In any case, I’m not an expert on Dodger finances, so really I don’t have a clue as to what they might do this winter. I leave that to FAZ, and hope for the best.

  17. I have a good friend I have not talked to for a few months that I saw today. He is a huge Cubs fan and asked me why the Dodgers were not doing so good.

His exact quote is “You guys have, by far, the best talent in the National League and you did it by not tanking like we did. That is amazing! What is wrong? Is it Roberts?”

I said: “No this team was put together by ass clowns. They only assembled the best talent in the league. They are chumps.”

    (extreme sarcasm zone)

  18. Adams was a straight waiver claim. No player going to from Cards to Nats.
    .
Murphy was in fact a trade from the Nats to the Cubs. The Cubs traded 21 year old infielder prospect, Andruw Monasterio, to Washington for Murphy and cash. Monasterio is primarily a 2B/SS, but also plays some 3B. Monasterio is from Caracas, Venezuela and was batting .263/.359/.336/.695 for Carolina League (A+) affiliate for the Cubs (Myrtle Beach). He has been assigned to the Potomac Nationals, also in the Carolina League. Maybe Omar Estevez would be a like comparison.
    .
I still think this is a big pickup for the Cubs. Murphy can play 3B for Baez until he comes back, or 2B and Baez can move to 3B. When Bryant does return, Maddon will be able to move Murphy around to 2B, 3B, and 1B. Baez can relieve Russell at SS. The toughest part will be trying to keep Zobrist happy. Zobrist is having a good year.

  19. Intentionally ridiculous, strategically hyperbolic, unfailingly cathartic.”

    I’m into that!

  20. Bryce Harper signed a 2 year / $35,250,000 contract with the Washington Nationals, including $35,250,000 guaranteed, and an annual average salary of $17,625,000. In 2018, Harper will earn a base salary of $21,625,000, while carrying a total salary of $21,625,000. That contract ends this year.
    .
Haprer is owed about $5M for 2018. Puig is owed about $2.5M for 2018. I would imagine the Dodgers would want to not absorb more than $3M of net additional salary. Would the Nats have accepted 1.25 years of Puig in exchange for 0.25 years of Harper? Or, would they also want a prospect?
    .
Barnes maintains a decent OBP and is a good defensive catcher. Grandal needs more rest especially this time of the year. Barnes needs to play more.
    .
Joc has finished each month strong this year. Need to keep him in the lineup for the rest of August sharing time in both CF and LF. Kemp and Puig can share time in RF. Taylor needs to play less. Kike’ needs to play less. But FAZ and Doc like to win as a team and that team often includes the 40 and for sure the entire 25. It’s worked but last year Taylor wasn’t leading the League in Ks.

    1. I saw where Kemp and a prospect was in play for Harper. That will go over well with Kemp.

          1. Washington would say no way to taking on Kemp’s contract. I read the Dodgers were just trying to block others. It would be great for LA if they could have convinc d Washington to take half his contract.

  21. Puig and Hundley are going to get to spend some more quality time together. Buster Posey is heading for hip surgery and is out for the year.

  22. DODGERS PLACE JT CHARGOIS ON DL

    LOS ANGELES
    – The Los Angeles Dodgers today placed right-handed pitcher JT Chargois on the 10-day disabled list with nerve irritation and recalled SHP Pat Venditte from Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Chargois, 28, exited last night’s game against the Cardinals after facing one batter in the fifth inning with neck discomfort. In 38 relief appearances this season with Los Angeles, he has gone 2-4 with a 3.45 ERA (12 ER/31.1 IP) and has held hitters to a .228 average, while striking out 38 against 15 walks.

Venditte, 33, will make his eighth stint with the big league club this season and has appeared in five games with Los Angeles allowing four runs over 4.1 innings (8.31 ERA), while striking out four against one walk. In 45 relief outings with the OKC Dodgers, the ambidextrous pitcher has gone 4-2 with four saves and has posted a 1.75 ERA (10 ER/51.1 IP), while holding the opposition to a .168 average. He has also punched out 62 batters against 14 walks, while posting a 0.86 WHIP.

  23. I think Harper will be a Cub:

    1. He is best friends with Kris Bryant;
    2. His dog’s name is “Wrigley.”
    3. The Cubs have the money, even if they have to eat part of Heyward’s deal.
    4. A DOG NAMED WRIGLEY? That’s all you need to know.

  24. Re. any Harper to LA trade: even for 6 weeks of Harper, Wash would ask for Verdugo PLUS. They sure as hell won’t ask for Kemp and the $26mil left on his deal

  25. The energy and urgency is just not there, like they are waiting for the next bad thing to happen. This brand of baseball is insufferable, bad bullpen and lack of clutch hitting will doom all teams, .500 team in more ways then one.

  26. Tweet by Gurnick…..Dodgers hitters struck out 12 times last night and 6 times through 3 innings tonight.

This is who the Dodgers are. Any runs scored are the result of HR’s, no scoring= a lot of strikeouts. This team is not built for a sustained offensive threat and instead are entirely too reliant on the long ball. They can’t seem to get a big hit when they need it as Joc displayed with a bases loaded flyout.

Say what you want and I’m not a Doc apologist and have questioned many of his moves, but this is the team given to him by the FO. Serious regression by CT 0 for 3, Cody, Keekee, Barnes, Woods, a suspect BP have all resulted in a subpar season.

I want to see another post season but I’ve got to think a failure to do so will result in some serious changes.

  27. In before anyone else: Horrible at bat by Puig! Put the damn bat on the ball when 2nd and 3rd and nobody out.
Update: Horrible at bat by Dozier as well! Pathetic

    1. I”m glad the fans there agreed with all of us, because there sure was a lot of booing after Joc popped up

  28. Such horrible lack of fundamental baseball we are witnessing. 2nd and 3rd no outs and we get 2 K’s and then a weak flyout to the OF. Dozier looked a lot like Forsythe at his AB striking out feebly on an off speed pitch. Lets DFA Turner Ward.

  29. Bobby,

“Pathetic” is a good description. Great minds think alike. I was about to describe it as “pitiful”.

Think I’ll skip this one. It’s about midnight here in the east, and I’m tired.

  30. Tweet by Plunkett……..Andrew Friedman on #Dodgers string of late losses over past 10 days: “Those things have happened. They’re in the bank. But as we look ahead, we feel really good about all facets of our team and feel we will click and play really good baseball down the stretch.”

Not sure what he is supposed to say..” I put a terrible roster together that can’t hit in the clutch, I failed in the BP construction, couldn’t get our first round draft pick signed, gave up ten players for only marginal results but hey were under the CBT and there’s always next year.”

  31. Lol agree nothing to say but I expect a little accountability in the off-season.

This little league philosophy of everyone plays and who cares about getting players into a groove is dooming us with risp. Baseball is hard enough but to have to come through after always being off a day is impossible. The thought process has to change a bit in the off-season, these are not machines!!

  32. 9 Ks. 7 LOB. 1 for 7 with RISP. These games all start to look the same. At least no bullpen runs yet, but they don’t have the lead so maybe the ‘pen doesn’t have to allow a run tonight.

    1. Terrific lead off hitter Bobby

      last 30 games- .222
      last 15 games- .083
      last 7 games- .000
      Second Half- .234
      Season- .244

WHAT A TERRIFIC JOC PEDERSON TURNAROUND!!!! MVP!!!!!!!!

Another solo home run, this is absurd………

      1. I actually laughed when he hit the HR, because I knew about 10-15 board members are screaming “oh great, another solo hr, why couldn’t we do that with somebody on base!!!”

  33. The light at the end of the tunnel is an apt title for your article.

    To quote Poltergeist
Stay away from the light. The light is dangerous. Don’t go near it. Don’t even look at the light.

  34. Incredibly bad base running by Kike. JT coming up as the tying run and he makes a true knucklehead play.

  35. Just havnt felt the love for this team all season.

We just havnt got into any kind of rhythm with all the injuries and shuffling of players.

We have some easier looking fixtures with the Padres & Texas coming up, but we will almost need 2 sweeps there.

Fundamentally though, our shit or bust philosophy offensively has been proven to be flawed.
    It is embarrassing to watch.

  36. Another nail in the coffin and it’s feeling like it won’t get pried open. How long can we hold our breath, especially while yawning?

  37. Per ESPN.com, “The Dodgers have stranded 25 runners in the first two games of the series.”

    1. Rick

Even the hit that was awarded on the boxscore last night, for being a hit when runners were in scoring position, was when Puig got hit with the bases loaded, last night.

They didn’t get a hit when runners were in scoring position, last.

  38. Has any team ever finished first in the league in ERA and runs and not made the playoffs? We might just be the first to accomplish that!

  39. The 10 game winning streak begins tonight!!! (I got nothing and the coffee hasn’t kicked in yet)

  40. We left 11 man on base last night. Petersen left five runners on in scoring position. Muncey is horrible on defense. Turner got the error, but Mincey should of had that throw. They just are not much fun to watch.

  41. We hit mediocre pitching, or a pitcher that is not having a good game, really well.

And that is why we have some games that are blows outs, and everyone hits, a solo HR.

But the Cards young pitchers with Yadi behind the plate, are not as easy, to hit.

Hopefully Roberts changes up the top of the order tonight, because this Card starting pitcher tonight, has a pretty good ERA.

Because sometimes our good pitching, can’t win one for us, when we leave 11 runners on base, and don’t get a single hit, when runners are in scoring position.
