RANDOM THOUGHTS ON THE PASSING SEASON

I have an article pending on Bullet Joe Rogan, one of the all-time great players in the Negro Leagues. I have an article pending on Bullet Joe Rogan, one of the all-time great players in the Negro Leagues.  Because of Bear’s wonderful articles on Zack Wheat and his journey with baseball, I thought I would put that off a few days, and just share some random thoughts on an already weird season:

●          You know that we’re in the full swing baseball, when the Doc criticisms start in earnest.  In hindsight,  intentionally walking Eduardo Escobar to load the bases to pitch to Christian Walker was the wrong decision.   In hindsight, pinch hitting Pollock for Rios was the wrong decision.   In hindsight, switching Betts to centerfield and Bellinger to first base may have been the wrong decision.   That said, it’s not as if those decisions were without any possible baseball justification.  At the time made, they had some sense.   Treinen is a notorious ground ball pitcher and setting it up for a possible out at any base did make some sense.   Having Treinen throw a meat ball dead center cut of the plate was absolutely horrid execution and Walker didn’t miss his pitch.   Maybe Bellinger could have caught that ball, we’ll never know.   Betts did take a slightly odd route, but then again, he is a gold glove outfielder.   Having Pollock hit for Rios also made some sense.   He was the Dodgers’ top hitter going into this game.   It’s unfortunate that he chose this game to revert to “playoff” Pollock, watching two absolutely hittable pitches (in each at bat) go by for strikes without taking his bat off his shoulders.  Execution, execution, execution, execution.   The Dodgers needed execution, but didn’t get it in the clutch.

●          I’m consistently amazed that a pitcher, who has pitched as long as he has, and who has exhibited some outstanding ability at times, as Joe Kelley has, can have such consistently sorry command.   Last night (Friday) I felt that maybe he was putting together a video to be presented at his appeal hearing.   He absolutely did not appear to have any idea where his pitches were going.   Moreover, throwing his first pitch to the backstop is well beyond a cardinal sin!   Maybe management can force him to take his 8 game suspension, just to give him extra time to learn where the plate is.   They might also remind him that he has the ability to throw 96-99 mph, he doesn’t need to continually throw sliders in the dirt.

●          If Brusdar Graterol could only throw a few MPH faster, I think he might have a future with the Dodgers.   I’m not sure that I have seen a pitcher throw as fast with as little effort in his delivery.   His pitches have some very serious giddy-up.   He’s a nice return for Kenta Maeda.

●          Mookie Betts is starting to put together some nice at-bats.   I haven’t seen everyone of his at-bats, but he doesn’t appear to ever just phone it in.   He works hard at his trade, and I’m happier each day that he’ll be a Dodger for the foreseeable future.

●          Not sure what to make of Bellinger.  I think perhaps the Dodgers should set up an e-mail hotline, so the fans who know what ails him, can e-mail in their suggested advice.  The sooner they can set that up, the better it will be for them and us.

●          It was nice to take 2 from the Asstericks!   I will always enjoy beating the Giants more, but I would love to see the Dodgers win every game they play against the Asstericks for the rest of my conscious life.

●          Joe Kelley suspended 8 games for doing what he normally does, and the Asstericks players get immunity for cheating their way to a WS championship.   Anyone see anything wrong in those decisions?   By the way, did Joe Kelley get suspended for actually hitting Hanley Ramirez with a pitch?   No he didn’t.  Isn’t that odd, when you consider that Ramirez couldn’t play the rest of the series and his absence, arguably, lost the series for the Dodgers.   No conspiracy to be seen here folks.

●          Corey Seager has been a favorite player of mine since he was first drafted.  His “old school” manner of approaching and playing the game are very refreshing.   I don’t know if it’s possible, but I would like to see him be a life-time Dodger.

●          Count me among those that was happy that the Pederson/Stripling trade with the Angels did not go through.   Chicken Strip has really come through big for the Dodgers when they’ve needed hi most.   He’s a good pitcher and he is one of the most engaging and refreshingly honest Dodger players when interviewed.  He makes Alana Rizzo’s work easy.

●          What should the Dodgers do with Pederson and Hernandez?   Do you consider trading them before the they hit the free agent market?   It’s certainly worth giving a thought.

●          Tony Gonsolin’s debut was nice.   I’m not sure if he will become a full time starter, but he reminds me of an efficient right handed version of Caleb Ferguson.  Both can give you a shut down inning when needed and can be used for multiple innings.   Now it will be Mitch White’s turn to shine, as he has been called up to replace Gonsolin on the roster.

●          Despite Friday nights’ hiccup, I still think this years bullpen is far superior to the bullpens of the last few years.   Right now, I feel the weakest link is Joe Kelley.   I would not have him pitch in critical situations.   Other than that, I’m fairly confidant in the other relievers.

●          Kershaw is scheduled to make his season debut on Sunday.   I hope he does well and gives a strong 6+ innings.   If not, maybe White’s call up is an insurance policy in case his debut does not go so well.

●          Apparently, doing well in intrasquad games is no guarantee that you will have a successful season.   The Dodgers looked virtually invincible during “Summer Training.”   Now it appears that aliens have invaded their bodies.

●          I totally understand the rational for doing it, but count me among those that is not a fan of the “runner starts on second” in extra innings rule.   Ostensibly, it shortens the game, but it lacks any excitement and it doesn’t appear that the managers/players have developed any consistent strategy for how to implement the new rule.

●          It comes as no surprise, but it is possible that this season can be cancelled before it is completed.   I certainly hope not, but I do see it possibly happening.   Moreover, players are still choosing to opt out of playing this season, with Lorenzo Cain, being the latest.   I would never cluck my tongue at any player who chooses to opt out, and realize that making that decision has to be extremely difficult on so many different levels.   While I don’t normally find myself to either the commissioner’s office or the MLB Players Association, I don’t envy the decisions they are grappling with on a day to day basis.   This is uncharted territory we are sailing in, and it appears that they are reading the stars the best they can to navigate the season to completion.

No song parody today.   Just Mavis Staples’ hauntingly beautiful rendition of the great Stephen C. Foster song, “Hard Times Come Again No More.”   This song was also recently performed by two of my favorite singers, Joan Baez and Emmylou Harris.  You would not be disappointed in listening to their version on YouTube   Then again, I honestly think that Emmylou Harris could sing pages from Webster’s Dictionary and it would be a number one hit.

Let us pause in life’s pleasures and count its many tears

While we all sup sorrow with the poor

There’s a song that will linger forever in our ears

Oh, hard times, come again no more

‘Tis the song, the sigh of the weary

Hard times, hard times, come again no more

Many days you have lingered all around my cabin door

Oh, hard times, come again no more

While we seek mirth and beauty and music light and gay

There are frail forms fainting at the door

Though their voices are silent, their pleading looks will say

Oh, hard times, come again no more

‘Tis the song, the sigh of the weary

Hard times, hard times, come again no more

Many days you have lingered all around my cabin door

Oh, hard times, come again no more

There’s pale drooping maiden who toils her life away

With a worn out heart, whose better days are over

Though her voice it would be merry, ’tis sighing all the day

Oh, hard times, come again no more

‘Tis the song, the sigh of the weary

Hard times, hard times, come again no more

Many days you have lingered all around my cabin door

Oh, hard times, come again no more

‘Tis the song, the sigh of the weary

Hard times, hard times, come again no more

Many days you have lingered all around my cabin door

Oh, hard times, come again no more

So far Seager has either layed off the backfoot breaking balls that’s been his nemesis or pitchers just haven’t gotten them there. He’s definitely looked to be the Dodgers most dangerous hitter so far.

  2. BobbyAugust 3, 2020

    Alden Gonzalez

    ESPN Staff Writer

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Mookie Betts had a lot of swelling on the middle finger of his left hand, which prompted him to leave early. An X-ray was negative, so Betts is day to day.

  3. Saxfan3August 3, 2020

At the time, I didn’t like the Stripling deal that was “reported” (guess we’ll never know the true return), and especially glad now.

State of the Dodgers thru 3 series? Well, they look a lot like we’re used to seeing, which I’m pleasantly pleased to find. I was a little worried entering the year without Ryu and Hill. So far, pitching has been excellent with no reason to think it will reverse. I was mildly concerned the un-juiced ball would trouble our offense, and it took a bit to get going, but we’re definitely seeing an uptick in HRs. So far, so good. I want to see how we react to elite pitching – specifically Seager. I’d add Bellinger, but he’s gotta address some fundamental areas first. If we got Seager and Betts hitting 300 or better in a playoff series against elite pitching, that’s huge difference from our prior campaigns. Guess we won’t know until it happens first.

  4. dodgerrickAugust 3, 2020

Dodgers hitting .242 RISP. Only Rios, Turner, Betts and Kike hitting better than .222 RISP.

Beatty, Muncy, Smith and Pollock all hitting .000.

Dodgers still leading MLB in LOB (79 in 9 games)

  5. Singing The BlueAugust 3, 2020

Ohtani had another bad outing for the Angels today and has undergone an MRI on his arm. They are waiting for results.

I can’t understand how any pitcher would willingly sign with that team. Their starting pitchers are cursed.

  6. QuasimodoAugust 3, 2020

If y’all want to hear what I think is the finest version of ‘Hard Times Come Again No More’ Jennifer Warnes did that song back in the late 70’s on her ‘Shot Through The Heart’ album. It’s just vocals without instruments. A very well engineered album. Hearing that song on a good sound system never fails giving me goose pimples. One of my favorite concerts was seeing Joan Baez at the Hollywood Bowl. Luck had it to where I was seated in the front section of the compartmented box seats. But as far as that song………. Jennifer Warnes.

  7. philjonesAugust 3, 2020

Has my memory failed? Doesn’t CK prefer pitching to Barnes? Hasn’t he become sort of CK’s personal catcher. I haven’t looked that up.

VINTAGE CLAYTON KERSHAW! Welcome back Kersh! Thank you Driveline!

  10. Mark TimmonsAugust 2, 2020

Austin Barnes and Will Smith are both excellent defensive catchers. Barnsie is a favorite of most of the staff because of his framing, but Smith is not far behind.

What Smith did last year was beautiful, but I felt at the time (still do) that his numbers last year were not real. I hope I am wrong (but I don’t think so). Keibert Ruiz will get his shot very soon. I am still high on Kaybear… but not as high as I once was. Diego Cartya is two years away. Catcher for the Dodgers is an offensive Black Hole.

  11. Michael Norris (AKA Bear)August 2, 2020

Rockies beat Pads again. Kemp goes 2-2 with another homer. Rocks are still % points ahead in the standings. Cespedes opts out after not showing up at the Mets-Braves game. Liriano opts out. Kelvin Herrera released by the White Sox.

  12. 2demeter2August 2, 2020

Okay, so maybe Bellinger would have caught the ball the other night.

  13. Michael Norris (AKA Bear)August 2, 2020

Well I have concluded that Austin Barnes should step to the plate sans bat. As often as he makes solid contact he would have a better chance up there unarmed.

  14. campyAugust 2, 2020

Was that KJ with a 95mph fastball — according to MLB gamecast

  15. campyAugust 2, 2020

Put Alexander in to face right handed batters?? Works for me, Doc is brilliant…..

  16. dodgerrickAugust 2, 2020

Dodgers still aren’t hitting RISP. 9 hits through 6 innings, 3 runs score on 2 HR.

Kerhsaw back – 5 2/3 scoreless his first start of the season. Looked great. This is what an ace looks like.

  17. HawkeyedodgerAugust 2, 2020

Fangraphs had a good piece on how little time the runner on 2nd rule saves. 2.3 % of games made it past 11 innings in 2019. Something like 1% for 15 innings. The really long games like 18 or 19 innings are anomalies and take place once a week at the most in all of baseball.

    ~

Count me in as old school. A player should earn their way on. No thanks on the gimmicks.

    ~

Clayton looks incredible. I apologize for trying to deal Rios to the AL a couple of years ago.

  18. Mark TimmonsAugust 2, 2020

Here is what I like about Mookie:

His HR was close, but he was flat-out running out of the box, not admiring it, like Yasiel Puig (dumbass).

  19. EricAugust 2, 2020

Also how is Will Smith supposed to get into a groove when it seems like Doc changes catchers like he changes underwear.

  20. Mark TimmonsAugust 2, 2020

Clayton has recaptured the Fountain of Youth.

    I am speechless!

  21. EricAugust 2, 2020

Taylor is in there for Seager I get that but what is Hernández in there for against a right hander. Either Beaty or Rios should be in there instead of Hernandez.

  22. Jeff DominiqueAugust 2, 2020

As Bobby mentioned, Corey is not in the lineup, and per Doc is not available. His quad was tightening and they removed him yesterday for precautionary purposes. Doc thinks it might be dehydration but they do not know for sure, so they are being extra cautious.

  23. Mark TimmonsAugust 2, 2020

This is CK re-visited! Hopefully, he can go 6, but so far he is playing with these snakes!

  24. Mark TimmonsAugust 2, 2020

    Show em’ the Curve:

  25. Mark TimmonsAugust 2, 2020

This is the best I have seen Clayton look in years!

He had several fastballs at 93 mph. He hasn’t been there for two years. I think we might see a 94 or 95… maybe not today, but next start!

    Can you say Cy Kershaw?

  26. EricAugust 2, 2020

A right hander is pitching and there’s no Beaty and Rios starting I don’t get it.

  27. BobbyAugust 2, 2020

    There’s that swing we remember!!

Excellent article in the New York Times today by Doug Glanville, about how important baseball is to the country right now.

And regarding Belli, it was obvious during Summer Camp that he wasn’t right mentally. From what I have read, it can be awful for players when they get into a prolonged slump. He will eventually get out of it. He is just too talented to continue like this. How long it will take, who knows, but if his teammates can pick up the hitting, it will take some pressure off.

    DODGERS ACTIVATE LHP CLAYTON KERSHAW

RHP MITCH WHITE OPTIONED TO ALTERNATE SITE

LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Dodgers have activated left-handed pitcher Clayton Kershaw from the injured list and have optioned right-handed pitcher Mitch White.

Kershaw, 32, will make the start today after missing the first nine games of the season with lower back soreness. The Texas native is entering his 13th season in the Major Leagues and is 169-74 with 2.44 ERA (617 ER/2274.2 IP) and 2464 strikeouts. Last season, he went 16-5 with a 3.03 ERA (60 ER/178.1 IP) and 189 strikeouts in 29 games (28 starts), while passing Sandy Koufax (2,397 strikeouts) for most strikeouts by a left-hander in franchise history and most wins (165) in Los Angeles Dodgers franchise history. The southpaw was originally drafted with the seventh overall selection in the 2006 First Year Player Draft out of Highland Park High School.

White, 25, was recalled yesterday for the first time in his career. The San Jose, CA native has been with the Dodgers four seasons, across five different levels, posting a 14-15 record with a 3.97 ERA (130 ER/294.2 IP) and 311 strikeouts. Last season, he split the season between Double-A Tulsa and Triple-A Oklahoma City, going a combined 4-6 with a 5.09 ERA (53 ER/93.2 IP) and 105 strikeouts. He was originally selected by the Dodgers in the second round of the 2016 First Year Player Draft out of Santa Clara University.

  30. Michael Norris (AKA Bear)August 2, 2020

Mark, I would like to know why you think they should play Rocky Gale, His career numbers are abysmal. Badger at his well advanced age can hit better than that guy. Granted, he is a solid defender, but Barnes is a better hitter. Just wondering what prompted this momentary loss of lucidity.

  31. BobbyAugust 2, 2020

Today (I think Seager has some quad twinge so he’s chillin on a Sunday afternoon):

    Mookie

    Muncy

    JT

    Belly

    CT3 (ss)

    Pollock

    Joc (DH)

    Kike

    Barnes

    Kershaw

  32. Michael Norris (AKA Bear)August 2, 2020

Padres placed Hosmer on the 10 day IL. He has gastritis. So they lose one of their hotter hitters.

  33. Michael Norris (AKA Bear)August 2, 2020

I on the other hand do not like the runner on 2nd. But since it has not cost us a game yet, I can live with it. The DH will be made permanent at the next CBA. Bank on it. Jeff, stick to facts. You have no feel for sarcasm, and suggesting they trade Belli was something a seriously deranged person would have suggested. Astute points 2D. I agree with all of them. Get the 3rd win today, and a winning road trip is assured. I said before they started that they needed to go at least 6-3 on this trip. Anything more is a plus. Colorado is getting excellent pitching so far. But we all know what a house of horrors Coors can be.

  34. hodges54August 2, 2020

Thank you for your “Random Thoughts” 2d2. I enjoyed reading them. “In hindsight, intentionally walking Eduardo Escobar……….was the wrong decision.” Of course, I agree. During the game, in foresight, I was thinking bring Ferguson back for the 8th inning. When the starter is removed, why does it have to be 1 inning , 1 reliever for the rest of the game? Especially in Ferguson’s case. He is relieving very well this year and he certainly could have gone 2 innings if needed. He has Started 5 games in the past for the team. Oh well, it was my feeling at the time and who knows what would have happened had they done that?

  35. sbuffaloAugust 2, 2020

Mookie Betts is really playing well. Cody Bellinger seems to be searching, lacking confidence in his approach. Sooner or later, he drives one and gets back to normal. Giving him a day off was a good idea. Looking forward to having Clayton back.

  36. Singing The BlueAugust 2, 2020

A post on a blog such as this should promote lots of comments. You’ve done your job today 2d2. People are responding. Here’s my take:

    1) Yes, I think Belli would have caught that ball but that’s water over the dam at this point. I think the reason that Mookie, a gold glover, didn’t get to it is because he spends most all of his time in right these days and the ball comes off the bat at a much different angle if you’re always looking at it from right field. If Doc plans to make these switches a few more times this year he should give Mookie a few innings in center to get used to it again.

    2) All of us know someone of whom we could say “trouble just seems to find him”. Kelly is that guy on the Dodgers.

    3) Email hotline for Belli – what a great idea. Maybe we should set up one for Doc as well. Or they could just send those guys copies of all the articles and comments from this site. Why go elsewhere when all the answers are here.

    4) Seager – don’t know how many of you heard the broadcast the other night when they mentioned that at that particular point in the season, Corey led the league in hard hit balls (95mph or more) with 16. The next guy on the list had 9. I hope he can stay healthy this year. If he can, I’m guessing AF will be waiving some large $ amounts at him to try and extend him before he reaches free agency.

    5) Not sure why you think the extra innings/runner at second is not exciting 2d2. You can say you don’t like it and you’d probably be in the majority, but I think it’s very exciting knowing that the winning run could score on almost any at bat. As they say, “to each his own” or in the case of DBM “her own”.

Nice article, 2D2. Agree with so many of your astute observations. As far as the runner at 2nd base in extra inning games go, I thought it was ok so far. I do not love it, but do not hate it either. The DH is growing on my approval even though I miss seeing a good hitting Dodger pitcher like Drysdale, Fernando, Kershaw, and yes, Greinke when he was a Dodger, perform at bat.

Question……does a player who opts out this year, still get a salary? Hope so.

One of my favorite movies is “Oh brother where art thou”, so love Emmy Lou Harris and Alison Krauss.

Are you taking the day off bear? What a slacker! Glad to have you in the lineup! Still reminiscing about my little league days today!

  41. JeffAugust 2, 2020

    Saxfan3,

Comments closed last thread before I could reply to you. Here is what I wrote:

Congrats. You are the only one who got my tongue in cheek remark about Belli. Just testing y’all. But………..have you noticed that every year, Belli struggles with something. He slumps, loses his timing, and swings for the heavens. He is a great defensive player, though. I haven’t seen him waver in this part of his game. Last year, was a breakout year for him. Playing the devil’s advocate here, he’s going to ask for a lot of money. 40+ HR’s is impressive, but he’s got to do that regularly. Stanton also hits a lot of HR’s but I don’t think the Yankees are happy paying him. We know Belli has got power but he still has to find the consistency in his offensive game.

In any case, I don’t think his woes are going to make or break the Dodgers this year. We should have an adequate offensive attack to go deep into the playoffs. I’m more worried about our rotation. I’m not a believer in it yet. We have good arms but most are not really developed into the kinds of weapons that win championships. They have a lot to prove to me. We have the numbers and that’s a good thing. Let’s see how they do against better teams. That will tell a lot. Then, there will probably be injuries in the rotation. CK seems to kick off almost every year with some ailment. Wood is already busted.

  42. philjonesAugust 2, 2020

Lots of stuff to digest 2d2. Here are my thoughts on some of your points. My .02 worth (you get what you pay for)

    * Betts is so skilled that some are speculating on his “bad route” to the ball over his head Friday night. Would Belli have caught it? Is it possible we might be a little bit spoiled with these 2? How many outfielders would catch that baseball?

    * I have gone from a Joe Kelly advocate last year to someone who only wants to see him in meaningless situations, if at all. He has such a live arm and that riding fastball can eat up a right hand batter. I saw him as valuable piece as a set up guy or closer. So this winter he supposedly made improvements to help his command. Really? He’s worse. A 98 mph guy that can only command that breaking ball. (But 15 straight?) He’s a head case that I can do without.

    * This is the best Dodger bullpen I’ve seen. We have seen very few poor outings. Santana has been refreshing.

    * Bett’s bat to ball skills are tremendous. He just barrels up a lot of baseballs and early had little to show for it. He just had “bad aim”. He hasn’t missed many fielders.

    * I love the new extra inning rule with the guy on second. I think it has ADDED excitement to each 1/2 inning. While we abandoned any strategy to score, it provides opportunities depending on the pitcher and line up.

    * I’m with MT on his posts yesterday. I’d like to see Mookie lead off I know Doc wants to stagger lefty – righty, I just like him leading off.

    * I’m becoming a big Edwin Rios fan and think he needs to be in the lineup. I’d prefer him at 3rd with JT a regular DH. But I’ve also thought Muncy is okay at 2nd, putting Rios at 1st. I guess that comes down to who you want at 2nd, Taylor/Kike or Muncy. I think I prefer JT as DH and Rios at 3rd. Either way, I see no need for Lux this year.

    * Can Rios catch? Just asking for a friend.

Maybe we could teach Rios to catch, move Joc to 1st and trade Bellinger. And Kelly to the starting rotation.

Okay, just kidding on the last one.

I just want to see CK get thru this with no back problems.

  43. Mark TimmonsAugust 2, 2020

With a RH on the mound, I would roll this lineup out:

    1. Betts RF

    2. Bellinger CF

    3. Seager SS

    4. Rios 3B

    5. Pederson LF

    6. Pollock DH

    7. Beaty 1B

    8. McKinstry 2B (activate him and let JT or Max be inactive)

    9. Gale C (activate him and let Barnes or Smith be inactive)

  44. Mark TimmonsAugust 2, 2020

AF and the Dodgers are pretty loyal. They are not just sabermetric worshipers. They look at people and the makeup of this team. As maddening as Joc has been to me, I would give him a chance to win a championship with this team that has been together for a while. Also, guys who hit 36 HR in 450 AB’s don’t grow on trees. All of this depth will be needed before the season is over. Unless something crazy happens, this needs to stand pat.

Kike and Joc are part of the soul of this team.

  45. Jorge ValenzuelaAugust 2, 2020

Muncy is leadoff only in the first inning, the second time he comes to bat, we don’t know if he will be the first, second, third, fourth or fifth to come to bat, why do you all have so much problem with that?

And hopefully Bellinger learns to hit the other side of the infield, maybe he has not realized that there are 3 other positions, that there are other sides, AND NOT ONLY FIRST BASE !!

Why do they always say “Black lives matter”? I know this is about racism, but doesn’t that sound a little racist? Why not say that all lives matter, not only the black lives …. ALL LIVES MATTER, COLOR DON’T!

Why blame Roberts for all the team’s losses? It is the players who must execute, he only gives the orders. I haven’t read anyone who says that Roberts did an excellent job when Dodgers win, but when they lose, it’s always his fault, and they are all experts, they all know more than him, of course, only after the game does everyone know what should be done ….

A player has a couple of good games and should play every day, a player has a couple of bad games, and they already want to trade him to another team and see what they can get for them, that’s what I call having confidence!

I think Rios/Beaty make Joc expendable. We all really like Joc (no as much as Bum, however), and we’d love to win a ring WITH Joc on the team.

But the question is, do we offer Joc a qualifying offer and get a top pick for him? Or trade him in the next few weeks and get a proven prospect(s) for him?

I say free Joc now. Get some assets for him now, and open up playing time for Beaty and Rios.

A lot to unpack there 2d

I was surprised to see that Betts has 5 years and 1660 innings in centerfield. It’s not an unfamiliar position for him, but he did misread that fly ball off the bat of Walker. Does Bellinger catch that? I say yes but I don’t know that. At any rate, I leave Betts in right.

I’m old school as you know. I don’t put the go ahead run on base. Especially if that guy is hitting .139 and the guy you’re bringing up is hitting over .300. I tell my 95 mph sinker ball pitcher to blow that .139 chump away with sinkers at his knees.

I don’t much care for Kelly. I bring him in only if the game is leaning out of hand either direction. That is one of the more questionable signings in my book.

Pederson looks disconnected. Not sure what’s going on with him but he doesn’t look right. Hernandez is Hernandez. He looks a little bigger this year to me. Like he’s been lifting differently. He’s a great teammate and solid utility man.

It’s my opinion that a healthy Lux gives this team a completely different look. Rios, Lux, and Betts is that look I want to see for the second half of this season. Muncy at first, Betts in right and Bellinger in center. With playoffs it’s what, an 80 game season? Other than an occasional day off, I see little need to rest and rotate as much as Doc does. The extra guys on this roster are there for emergencies. In close games I leave the starters in. In blowouts I give the reserves some innings and at bats. This team will have its share of blowouts.

Yes. A virus is the elephant in the room.

Joan Baez. Wow. Brings back some memories.

“Emmylou Harris could sing pages from Webster’s Dictionary and it would be a number one hit.”

    Good line. I agree 100%.

Jeff, I will give Doc credit for his decisions last night. These are decisions managers should make on a routine basis. He got Rios and Beatty in the game. He rested Bellinger. Now, he needs to rest Muncy and Joc.

Here is what I do not understand. Muncy opens the season batting lead off. Did Muncy bat lead off in any exhibition games? No. Why not? It is the same as in basketball your number 2 guard plays the number 2 position all exhibition season. Then when the season starts, you tell your number 2 guard you are starting at point guard tonight. Dumb. Mookie has been a lead off batter. Put him there and leave him there.

Pinch hitting for Rios made three guys move to a different position. We will never know, but I think Belly would of caught that ball in center field. Pinch hitting for Joc, who is not hitting, would of been a better move. Intentionally walking a hitter that is not hitting and pitching to a hitter that is hitting is dumb. Treinen is a ground ball pitcher. Pitching to a right/left hand batter should not make any difference. Doc made that move so Trienen could pitch to a right hand batter.

    I am getting old.

This is Serious!

Mookie Betts has been sick for nearly two weeks. He is still throwing up. Two weeks ago, he weighed 175 pounds. Now, he weighs 157 pounds. “ My body’s just kind of eating itself, ” he said. “I t’s hard to not fuel it. And so every time — literally, every time — I fuel my body, I…

The Dodgers Get their Heart and Soul Back

If you think that Kike Hernandez is “ just another poor hitting utility player ” you may suffer from the same malady Kike did the first half of last season: LACK OF VISION . Kike hit .191 in the first half of 2024, and during that time, he had a conversation with Martin…
