Minor League Roster Sizes
I have always had some difficulty knowing the exact roster size for the minor league affiliates although 25 and 35 were relatively safe numbers. I contacted Jeff Lantz, Senior Director of Communications for MiLB, for exact information. I had not been aware of the years of service restrictions at the lower levels although they make perfect sense. I thought perhaps some LADT posters may be interested in the official regulations regarding MiLB roster sizes.
PCL – 25 players active
TEX – 25 players active
CAL – 25 players active (35 players under control on roster), No more than two players and one player-coach on active list may have more than six years of prior MiLB experience.
MID – 25 players active (35 players under control on roster), No more than two players on active list may have more than five years of prior MiLB experience.
PIO – 35 players on active roster. No more than three players on active roster can have more than three years of prior Minor League service time.
AZL – 35 players on active roster. No more than three players on active roster can have more than three years of prior Minor League service time.
DSL – 35 players on active roster. No players on active roster can have more than four years of prior Minor League service time. No draft-eligible players from the U.S. or Canada may participate.
Field of Dreams
A year ago this past January, the real “Field of Dreams’ in Dyersville, Iowa was badly vandalized causing thousands of dollars of damage. In April 2018, Jeff Lantz took the bull by the horns to lead the restoration of the field.
“I saw the images of the damage that was done on Twitter and it kind of made you sick to your stomach to see it,” he said.
So Lantz enlisted the help of the Iowa Cubs, Cedar Rapids Kernels, Clinton LumberKings and Quad Cities River Bandits. The four teams spent a day fixing up the field. Members of the teams’ grounds crew and even some front office officials helped pitch in to fix everything up. As the article states: “If you rebuild it, they will come.”
This is just a shout out to Jeff Lantz, in particular, who does a remarkable job along with his staff in communicating and promoting minor league baseball.

Participating teams, with the help of their volunteers, will be rebuilding pitcher’s mounds, renovating concessions stands, leveling outfields, repairing fences and restoring dugouts, among other upgrades to diamonds and green spaces.
Always Something New
The Birmingham Barons, a Double-A affiliate of the Chicago White Sox, have started up a tradition at home games. During the seventh inning of home games, the Barons and their fans take a moment to wave toward center field, where patients at Children’s of Alabama Hospital can catch a glimpse of the baseball action. The hospital overlooks the stadium. The adopted tradition started up this season for the Barons, and it may be here to stay.
Emily Jaenson
Emily Jaenson has a career in baseball that has taken many twists and turns, but ultimately landed her in an enviable position. As the only woman holding a position as general manager at the Triple-A level, she is demonstrating to the highest standard that Minor League Baseball is pushing for change in its industry.
Recognized as the highest-ranking woman in MiLB, Jaenson has taken it upon herself to show other women it is possible to not only sit in her chair but also to have everything else they want in life. For that reason, she is proudly a member of the board of directors for Girl Scouts of the Sierra Nevada.

It was a slow day down on the farm. Both the loons and Dodgers were rained out while the Drillers had had a travel day returning to Tulsa to begin an eight-game home stand starting today against the Midland RockHounds.
Rancho Cucamonga Quakes 8 – Lake Elsinore Storm 3 (Padres)
The Quakes were the only Dodger minor league affiliate in action on Tuesday and enjoyed the afternoon game. They started quickly as Carlos Rincon made Lake Elsinore starter Mason Thompson pay for issuing first inning walks to Donovan Casey and Devin Mann. Rincon promptly hit a three-run home run to left center field. It was his fourth of the season and the second consecutive game in which he has connected. In the bottom of the fourth inning the Quakes picked up two more runs on a home run. Jeter Downs hit his second of the season following a Brayan Morales single. They scored a run in each of their last three innings. In the sixth inning Downs scored on a fielding error following his double. In the bottom of the seventh inning Nick Yarnell hit a solo homer and in the bottom of the eighth Downs scored once again on a sacrifice fly following his second double of the game. Downs with his three extra base hits and Rincon with two had the only multiple hit game for the Quakes.
On the mound Victor Gonzalez had another difficult outing lasting only 1.2 innings giving up two runs on four hits and leaving the bases loaded. Austin Hamilton followed Gonzalez and allowed only one of three inherited runners to score. He finished with three innings picking up the win on three hits and two strikeouts. Unheralded Wes Helsabeck logged two innings of hitless ball while striking out one. Logan Salow gave up one earned run in 1.2 innings pitched and left with two runners on base. Left-hander Justin Bruihl made his California League debut inheriting two runners from Salow and retiring both hitters he faced, the second by strikeout to end the game. Bruihl was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Dodgers on July 15,2017.

I think Will Smith and Tony Gonsolin ( both with OKC ) have a chance to see some time with the Dodgers this year,I was going to include Matt Beaty but he was called up yesterday.
Dustin May and Gavin Lux are off to good starts,and Keibert Ruiz got off to a slow start but in his last 10 games with 37 at bats he has 10 hits, 8 rbi´s 1 hr with 4 so, and hitting .270.
My biggest disappointment so far is DJ Peters and my biggest surprise is Omar Estevez.
Good summary. I have been impressed with Miguel Vargas this year and the early-season performance of Mitch White. Josiah Gray has been a great addition and Hunter Feduccia started hot too. Verdugo and Ferguson have shed their prospect status completely while Dennis Santana is technically still in the mix. It’s always nice when your #1 guy actually performs, as is the case with young Alex. Hopefully, more of his Droogs will soon follow.
How can you defend Aj Pollock signing by Friedman now ?? What a bad signing.

Mark the player has had an injury history . He was not really needed. Why sign him to this kind of guaranteed contract . Why do you defend Friedman so much. Why didn’t he went with Verdugo , Bellinger, Joc and sign a low risk veteran as Adam Jones for insurance ?? is a bad signing already because player could miss whole season. Can i say : Olivera, Sierra, McCarthy, getting Micah Johnson for Peraza trade , Kazmir, trading for Reddick (One of the worst players to wear Dodgers uniform ever ) . I can defend it in the sense that the logic that went into it was sound. Yes, he had an injury history, but such was reflected in the the financial exposure the Dodgers took on. Friedman is also adroit in building levels of redundancy – depth – to anticipate such things. If I understand how he operates, it’s more like a diversified stock portfolio – maybe even a hedge fund. He was a Wall Street guy after all, and it’s how he thinks, and it’s equally effective in constructing a ball club if the objective is to create sustainable success.
Simply because a player under performs or is even a bust does not make the trade bad if the underlying rationale was good. If you decide to walk outside your door and are suddenly struck by lightning and die does not make your decision to walk outside your door a bad one.
The Bryce Harper signing, on the other hand: that was a bad one.
The Padres are going to start 3 lefties in the upcoming series, that would be 5 straight games for Joc to chill on the bench. CT3, Kike and Freese will play a lot with Muncy and Alex to pick up the slack created by Pollock’s issue. One of those 4 will be on the bench each game plus Joc. More 10-3 games against LHP and teams will stop stacking lefties but for now it’s a thing and Joc is on the outside looking in.
Verdugo is right there in ROY conversation and though it’s early I see Walker on AZ, Tatis and Paddack on SD, Alonso on the Mets and Robles on Wash as the main contenders and the ones getting major playing time and producing.
The bullpen is slowly coming together with Kelly looking better, Garcia pitching for his spot, Floro still ERA of 0.00, Baez having super powers and Kenly looking more like his old self plus Urias and Strip adding length. Wild cards are the lefties with Alexander the DP machine and Caleb and Cingrani on the mend. Not much at AAA so why not add Josh Fields and see if he can stay healthy?
If Joc were to get a start against a lefty it would be today against Bumgarner. Historically Joc (.222 in 9AB w/ 1HR) has had more success against him than has Taylor (.063 in 16AB w/ 0HR). Kike’ (.500 in 42AB w/ 4HR) absolutely owns Bumgarner.
A LRLR lineup could be used.

Verdugo is performing well enough to be in the conversation. He is contributing to a team that is loaded with talent and expected to go far in the playoffs. Tatis has a starter spot, so he gets a lot more exposure (plus he has some pedigree). Christian Walker has had huge success against Kershaw (in a limited sample size) and this year is hitting well. Walker is 28 years old so that might explain why there is not as much excitement around him as some of the other younger rookies. Verdugo is 22 years old. Cody Bellinger, an early candidate for MVP, is only 23. In fact, I think Bellinger and Verdugo roomed with each other (and Willie Calhoun) at one point when they were in the minor leagues. It’s interesting to compare the two. Bellinger is showcasing really good contact skills this season, in addition to the raw power he demonstrated when he burst onto the scene his rookie season. Verdugo has always had great bat to ball skills and is starting to show some power in his rookie season.
I admit, I’m rooting for Verdugo to get more playing time because I’d like to see him win NL ROY. Julio Urias is also 22 but I don’t believe he is classified as a rookie anymore.
So happy for Beaty. Never a top prospect. Paid his dues. Got a hit in his first major league at-bat! [on a great team btw]

I would say, perhaps a potentially strong bullpen. The horses all have to be pulling together. I am pleased Yimi Garcia seems to be getting things together. In his last eight innings he is a walk shy of eight perfect innings- no hits, no runs.
We just need our bullpen not to be a weakness.
To make an analogy with basketball, the bullpen is like defense. You can win with a less than stellar one, but when it comes to crunch time, it’s the one thing that can have the biggest impact on the outcome.
For it to be a “strong bullpen”:
1. Jansen has to be slightly better. We’re built from the top down so KJ has to be at least above average.
2. Kelly needs to get right and be a viable weapon to escape a jam with pure heat.
3. Baez/Alexander need to continue to be core members.
4. Some combination of Floro/Yimi/Chargois/et al. need to solidify the middle.
5. Stripling needs to accept his role as a Swiss army knife and occasionally long reliever.
*Urias, if not in the rotation, could be the difference maker.
**Cingrani could be another lefty for the playoffs.

We all knew Pollack was likely to get injured. Oh well, that is the Friedman way. Take chances on injury prone players. Season isn’t over so can’t judge good or bad yet. An infected elbow doesn’t sound good though. Wishing him good luck and a speedy return to health. Hope it’s not like a drug resistant staph or something.

Bobby–I hope Kimbrel stays out as long as possible. I’d be in favor of giving him a pro-rated one-year deal, let him prove himself [again] in the postseason, then let him test free agency again in 2020.
I think baseball people are smart enough now to know the actual inning a reliever pitches is no longer the sole determinant for how much money he sould make. Andrew Miller and Terry Francona helped shatter this conception.
So, whether it’s Kimbrel setting up Jansen or vice versa, having both those guys in the pen coming closing time in October could help us seal the deal.
I mean, this has to be this year, right? Lucky number 31 points to Yes.
I’m going through Fangraphs’ Top 35 prospects update. So far in the top ten, we have three potential 2b options:
3. Lux–Throwing issues are still a concern but newfound power/lift added to already solid bat skills = potential All-Star.
7. Downs–Bat-first with no one stand-out tool, but well-rounded and capable of possibly moving to CF someday.
9. Estevez–Short to ball with game-ready pull power; like Downs, has some SS experience in case of utility future.
We also have three RHPs in the top ten:
2. May–Mid 90s fastball and out-pitch slider
6. Gonsolin–Currently injured but velocity topped out at 100 last year; four-pitch mix; bullpen option.
8. Gray–Athletic conversion arm; repeats delivery; #4 SP potential.
On that list from FanGraphs I was most interested in Carlos Duran, Andy Pages and Jerming Rosario. Duran and Shaps made a column on LADT last July 24th but Rosario didn’t.

With all our complaints about Taylor striking out a lot, Bryce Harper is currently striking out 37.4 percent of the time.
Well Harper actually can hit a lot more home runs and gets on base more.

Like the lineup, Kike has to be in there and Freese is hot, plus Muncy after 3 good games had a rough one yesterday and sits against MadBum. CT did a couple good things yesterday, shortening up with 2 strikes and taking the ball the other way. Alex gets some run in CF and I like Martin in there too. With an off day tomorrow no need to sit Cory or JT but I would wager they sit Sunday. Ryu was good last game, can he do the same on the road in a pitchers park?
Shout out to Carlos again about his Friedman rant. If you read any baseball literature you will see that rival executives are very complimentary about AF and the Dodgerborganization. Sure he has had some misses, everyone has, but he hasn’t crippled us with any big, long term misses like so many other organizations. Epstein has stymied the growth and f Cubs with horrible Heyward and Darvish signings and he’s one of the best. You fail to give AF his due with Taylor and Morrow in 17 and Muncy in 18. He has always delivered at the trade deadline to make a good team even better with some big pickups without giving away our best prospects. We have a good shot at returning to a third straight WS. He gets no credit for this? Sorry but he’s done a very good job. You may not recognize it but his peers do!

Hey Carlos, love your passion, but your piece falls into my “rant” of a couple of days ago about how some guys are
talking like we are 5-25 and are sitting with the band on the Titanic instead of looking at the standings(First team to 20 wins). Also, totally disagree on Pollock, he will be fine and will come through in October. Listen to Vasseghes podcast once in awhile, and you will hear Uncle Ned say time and time again, the Dodgers FO and Roberts always think long term, as far as knowing how long and tough a season is. Friedman constructed this team for the long haul of a season, with a butt load of depth, both on the bench and in the minors. Look at how they are already pacing Turner, how Seager has scheduled days off no matter who they play, how they try to give Kershaw 6 days in between starts instead of 5, as that makes a night and day difference for him. They were also giving Pollock a day off here and there, knowing his history. Ned also says that frustrating to us or not, Doc plays Taylor and Kelly to give them a chance to succeed and get untracked, knowing how valuable they will be in October. He said this is all totally thought out and planned, which of course bites them in the ass sometimes, but Cassidy is spot on. Look at Epstein with the Cubs and how they couldn’t sign one impact player this past offseason because of all the bloated contracts. Two guys that he signed away from us, Darvish and Morrow, have not produced at all. Also, Pollock will take some time. I heard an interview with him during spring training, and he said the biggest difference between the Dodgers and D-Backs culture, which Doc and others have instilled, is the Dodgers EXPECT to win everytime, they don’t hope to win. Pollock mentioned it will also be a bit of a transition going from 20 or 30 thousand to about 50 thousand fans a night during home games, way different vibe. I think some guys on this blog are Freidmans harshest critics, but the guy that get paid to do what he does on rival teams all respect the dude bigtime, and some teams don’t really like to deal with him because they always wonder what he’s up to by going for a certain guy that they think is so-so. Do not underestimate how much homework the Dodger FO does. Just “Enjoy the Ride”!
Pollock surgery will be Thursday; no return timetable yet
Wow, that’s really messed up. They say he bumped it in the outfield and that moved the hardware which caused a bacterial infection. The good news is that they think they can remove the hardware instead of replacing it. I hope it works out for him, you bet he’s pissed.

I just found out that Krukow, my favorite color man in baseball, has a degenerative muscle disease that has left him with atrophied quads and his reliance on a cane for walking. Kuiper says he never complains and is almost always cheerful and alive. Good man! These two are the best for me. Never heard a negative word about the Dodgers from either one of these guys. They don’t seem to have a bias and report what they see on the field.

I enjoy listening to Krukow and Kuiper as well. As much as Krukow loves Madbum, he didn’t shy away from describing the “ownage” that is Keekay over Bumgarner – 23 for 46 with a good number of extra base hits.
The Giants seem way more into this game than the Dodgers, btw.
at that point I had the Giants announcers as well, and yes, they are a great tandem to listen to.
They were saying in the Pre-game that this is their World Series. The A’s announcers are fun also.

I like AmyG, but I agree – Alanna is really good. Her forte is interviewing. Alanna will ask some pretty insightful questions to gamers like Freezer and Turner. She dials it down and leads the witness when interviewing Joc since he tends to lock up and get confused by complicated questions. It’s pretty funny listening to him answer though…
It’s Amy’s voice that doesn’t do it for me. A little girl’s voice in a woman’s body.
Taylor is just god-awful.

Wow, even though we lost, classic Dodgers Giants game. Dodgers were way aggressive on the basepaths, love it.. Great game to watch as a baseball fan who is not sucked in by the home run. Could have gone either way. Loved the way we scrapped all game, a base hit here, a walk there, Kikes steal on Bellingers hit to first base. This doesn’t really feel like a loss, more like us stretching our legs and trying different strategies against a team that we can handle nine times out of ten. Alot of positives tonight. Love this damn team, reminds me totally of 2017.
