Hitting For the Cycle: A Rare Feat

Hitting for the cycle happens at about the same rate as no-hitters. Although with pitch counts the way they are, it is going to take a special effort by a starter to notch a no-hitter. Many of the cycles in baseball, are not accomplished by power hitters. There have been to date, 349 times. 42 of those were done before 1900.

The first one occurred on June 14th, 1876. The player was English born, George Hall. Of course it is disputed a little. Hall had five hits that day. Most accounts agree on four of them, a homer, 2 triples and a single. The dispute is whether that fifth hit was a double. He was playing for the Philadelphia Athletics of the National League against the Red Stockings of Cincinnati. The first recognized cycle came in 1882, and was accomplished by Curry Foley, who was born in Ireland. It was May 25th, 1882, and Foley played for the Buffalo Bisons against the Cleveland Blues. Teams had cool names back then. Foley is in the suit.

The most cycles in a career are three and several players have done this. John Reily, Bob Muesel, Adrian Beltre, Trea Turner, Christian Yelich, all three of his have come against the Reds, and Babe Herman who had two while a Dodger and one with the Cubs. The most cycles in a single year, 8, which has happened twice, 1933 and 2009.

Brock Holt with DC.

Three players, Michael Cuddyer, John Olerud, and Bob Watson, had one in each league. Three pairs of family members have hit for the cycle, Gary and Daryl Ward, Gus and David Bell and Craig and Cavan Biggio. Mel Ott and Dave Winfield are the youngest, 20, and oldest, 39, to do it. Christian Yelich is the only player with two cycles in the same season against the same team. Brock Holt hit for the cycle in the division series in 2018 against the Yankees, the only post season cycle to date. Eddie Rosario got his on just 5 pitches in 2021 while a Brave.

The first one against Brooklyn came in 197 by Johnny Bates of the Boston Doves. The first one by a Dodger came on May 25th, 1922. Jimmy Johnson did it against the Phillies. Some Hall of Famers who hit for the cycle that you would recognize, Nap Lajoie, Home Run Baker, Tris Speaker, Honus Wagner, George Sisler, who had two. Ross Youngs, Ray Schalk, Pie Traynor, Goose Goslin, Kiki Cuyler and Max Carey, a former Dodger who got his off of Brooklyn.

Babe Herman had two in 1931. One on May 18th against the Reds. His second one came on July24th against the Pirates. Arky Vaughn, who would late play for the Dodgers, hit the last one in the 1930’s on July 19th, 1939, against the Giants. He was with Pittsburgh at the time.

On September 2nd, 1944, Dixie Walker hit for the cycle against the Giants, the Dodgers first since 1931, Jackie Robinson, 1948, and Gil Hodges, 1949, were the only other cycles for Brooklyn before the 50’s. By comparison, the Red Sox had six in the 40’s. Cronin, Leon Culberson, Bobby Doerr (2), Bob Johnson and Ted Williams accomplished it for them. The Dodgers had four players ding them for cycles in the 40’s. Harry Craft, Bob Elliot, Wally Westlake, and some guy name Musial.

The first cycle in the NL in the 50’s came off of the bat of Ralph Kiner, and he did it against the Dodgers on June 25th, 1950. The Dodgers did not have a player in the 50’s hit for the cycle. On May 2nd, 1959, Frank Robinson, playing for the Reds, got the second one of the decade against the Dodgers.

The 60’s would begin with expansion in the AL in 1961 and the NL in 62. There had been teams moving to new cities in the 50’s with the Browns moving to Baltimore and becoming the Orioles, the Braves moved to Milwaukee, the Giants and Dodgers moved west. The Senators moved to Minnesota and became the Twins, and the A’s moved to Kansas City.

The Angels and new Senators team joined the AL in 1961, the Mets and Colt 45s the NL in 62. There would be several new parks added during the 60’s. Candlestick in SF, Dodger Stadium in LA, Shea in New York, the Big A in Anaheim. The smaller parks were being replaced by more spacious stadiums. Most of them pitcher friendly.

There were 11 cycles in the 50’s. There were 14 in the 60’s. None involved the Dodgers. Two players, Ken Boyer of the Cardinals and Angels SS, Jim Fregosi, each had two. Hall of Famers, Brooks Robinson, Willie Stargell, Carl Yastrzemski and Billy Williams all hit for one. Billy Williams cycle was what they call a natural cycle, single, double, triple, homer.

The first cycle in the 70’s was accomplished by Dodgers first baseman, Wes Parker on May 7th, 1970, against the Mets at Shea in NY. Ray Sadecki started for the Mets. Parker was batting fifth that day. He would go 4-5 with 2 runs scored and 3 driven in. 3 of his hits came off of Sadecki, meaning he was hitting from the right side. His homer off of Sadecki in the 7th, knocked him out of the game. He got his triple off of Jim McAndrew in the 10th inning. LA won 7-4. Ray Lamb got the win, and the loss went to McAndrew.

There were 29 cycles in the 70’s, and Parkers was the only one involving the Dodgers. The 80’s opened with Ivan De Jesus, a former Dodger, getting one against the Cardinals while playing for the Cubs in April of 1980. Odd fact, Ivan would play on the 85 Cardinals who beat the Dodgers in the LCS. There were 27 cycles in the 80’s. None involved the Dodgers.

Some names would be familiar to fans, Puckett, Dawson, Fisk, Ripken. Others not so much, Charlie Moore, Oddibe McDowell, Kelly Gruber, Candy Maldonado. Gary Redus. George Brett got the first one in the 90’s and the second of his career. And again, the Dodgers made it through a decade without being involved in one. Seems like a broken record.

The first one in the new century occurred on April 27th, 2000, when Jose Valentine of the White Sox did it against the Orioles. The first one in the NL happened 22 days later on May 19th, Jason Kendall of the Pirates performed the feat against the Cardinals. The Dodgers finally were involved in one on August 28th, 2008, when Christian Guzman of the Nationals had one in DC in a game LA lost 11-2. His first hit that game was a first inning homer off of Kershaw. CK gave up 5 runs in just 2.1 innings and would suffer his 5th loss. LA scored 2 in the first and was shut down after that. Guzman got his double off of Ramon Troncoso, and his triple off of Joe Beimel.

In 2009, the Dodgers finally got the second cycle in LA history. On April 13, 2009, the Dodgers were playing the Giants at Dodger Stadium and facing Randy Johnson. The game was scoreless going into the third inning. Billingsly and Furcal made outs, but then Orlando Hudson launched a 2-out homer to left. LA led 1-0. The Giants got the run back in the top of the 4th, but LA scored 6 in the bottom of the frame to put the game out of reach. Hudson’s double came off of Johnson who pitched just 3.2 innings also allowing a homer to Ethier, who would also hit one in the 8th off of Hinshaw. His triple came off of Branden Medders who pitched the 5th and 6th innings. LA won 11-1.

It would be 2017 before the Dodgers were involved in one again. Some former and future Dodgers would hit for cycles. Adrian Beltre had three. 2003, 2012, 2015. Matt Kemp also had one in 2015 while with the Padres. Trea Turner had 3 before he joined the Dodgers in 21, 2017, 2019 and in 21 about a month before the trade to LA.

Freeman had one in 2016 and 2021, Betts in 2018, Ohtani in 2019. Cavan Biggio who spent a short time in LA in 24, had one for the Jays in 2019. On July 15th, the last cycle involving the Dodgers was accomplished by Cody Bellinger against the Marlins in Miami. He was batting 4th that day playing 1st base. His 3rd inning 2-run homer off of Urena started a 5 run third that was capped by Grandal’s 3-run shot. He doubled off of Steckenrider and got his triple off of Nick Wittgen. LA won the game 7-1 with Alex Wood getting the win.

The last cycle came in 2025 on July 12th when Byron Buxton did it against the Pirates. So, who will get the next one? Will it be a superstar, or just some player you would never expect? Carson Kelly, the Cubs catcher, was the last National Leaguer to get one in March of last year against the A’s.

Arkansas Travelers (Seattle) 5 – Tulsa Drillers 1 – Game 1, 7 innings

The Drillers got a taste of 2025 D1 pitching phenom from LSU, LHSP Kade Anderson. This was his 6th start, and he has completed 30.0 IP.  He has allowed 2 runs, 15 hits, 5 BB and 47 K.  It sure looks like Seattle has another future All Star pitcher in their organization.  Why he is in AA is a mystery.

For the Drillers sole run, C Frank Rodriguez hit the first HR Anderson has allowed this year.

Tulsa started LHSP Wyatt Crowell, who was matching Anderson for the first three innings.  Then came the 4th.  Crowell struck out the first batter of the inning.  Then – single, triple, single, BB, and double.  Once Crowell was removed, Arkansas had a 4-0  lead, and a runner on 2nd with 1 out.

RHRP Cam Day relieved Crowell.  After Tulsa threw out the runner at the plate on a fielders choice, Day gave up a disengagement violation, WP, walk, and RBI single for the 5-0 lead.

Rodriguez’s 2nd HR of the year was in the 6th, for the final 5-1 score.

Lake County Captains (Cleveland) 8 – Great Lakes Loons 6

LHSP Zach Root pitched in his first game since April 18.  He lasted 1.2 IP, 33 pitches (17 strikes).  He was not scored on, and did not allow a hit.  He did walk 2 and strike out 2.

The Loons struck first in the 2nd. DH Jose Meza and C Victor Rodrigues both walked.  Meza moved to 3rd on a F8 and scored on a ground ball out.

After Root got the first two outs in the 2nd, RHRP Davis Chastain replaced Root.  A single, SB, and single tied the score.

Great Lakes scored 3 in the 3rd, RF Mike Sirota singled.  CF Eduardo Quintero forced Sirota at 2nd.  Quintero scored on LF Charles Davalan’s double (7).  Davalan scored ahead of Nico Perez, on Perez’s HR (5).

Chastain allowed a lead off HR in the 3rd, and then walked the bases loaded before LHRP Justin Chambers came in to get the final out.

In the 4th, Chambers issued a 1 out BB, single, and BB before getting a 2nd out.  He then walked the next batter to force in a run.  That was followed by a 2-run single.

RHP Christian Zazueta came in as the bulk pitcher.  He gave up a double who scored on a catcher’s throwing error and then a solo HR.

In the 7th, Quintero singled and Davalan drew a BB.  The duo pulled off a double steal and scored on a Meza’s single.

Back to back doubles by Lake County scored the final run.

  1. Nice win last night in all aspects of the game.Sheehan was excellent, bullpen was exceptional, defense strong and just enough offense to beat a very good Sale and Atlanta team. Atlanta is back and can’t be taken lightly in the October tournament.

  2. Today’s lowlight came from Fernando Tatis Jr, turning a JJ Wetherholt single into a “Little League homer.”
It was so much that be failed to glove the hard-hit shot bounding along the turf. Terrible play, but it happens….
But Tatis, known for his speed, didn’t exactly hustle to retrieve the ball.
If he had, Wetherholt might have been held at 3B by his coach. Or he might have been thrown out at the plate.
If I rooted for the Padres, I’d be pissed.
Hey, if Pittsburgh refuses to deal Skenes, should the Dodgers go after Misioroski?
    The Miz is a beast.

      1. Miz is a pitcher, not a hitter. He pitched against the Dodgers for Milwaukee in the LCS last year. I would like to see the Dodgers get an on base machine, a player who has a high OBP, and can also hit one out for you once in a while. Call currently has the highest OBP in the majors.

    1. I think the Dodgers have a better chance of getting Skenes than Misiorowski. If Brewers’ MO stays true, the discussions for trade do not happen before 2030.. But I agree, Miz is a beast. The Dodgers passed on him and drafted Dalton Rushing, and I AM okay with that.

      1. 10 pitches > 103 MPH. What is the over/under on years before he goes under the knife, Shoulder. Elbow. A SP is not supposed to be able to throw that hard pitches in multiple inning stretches. Are they?

  3. really curious about the thinking behind this:

The Cleveland Guardians are acquiring two-time Gold Glove-winning catcher Patrick Bailey in a trade with the San Francisco Giants for the No. 29 pick in this year’s draft and left-handed pitching prospect Matt “Tugboat” Wilkinson, sources tell Passan.

    https://youtu.be/FUFWkuMY6xM

    1. They are optioning Bo Naylor. To be honest, Bailey’s bat has been anemic. But his defense is solid.

    2. The baseball trade value people have some interesting thoughts:

Today the #Guardians acquired C Patrick Bailey ($43.6M surplus trade value) from the #SFGiants  in exchange for LHP Matt Wilkinson ($3.0M) and a Competitive Balance Round A Pick ($5.0M).

The deal is rejected by our model as an underpay by Cleveland.

Despite his poor offense, the model sees a lot of value in Bailey, a 27-year-old catcher who has averaged more than 3 fWAR per season and has an additional 3 years of cheap team control following 2026. The catcher market is barren, so this seems like a nice deal for Cleveland.

The Giants need offense and Bailey is off to an abysmal start, with a 16 wRC+ so far compared to his usual marks in the 70-80 range. They also want to give prospect Jesus Rodriguez an extended look. Still, this feels like selling low on a cold start from Bailey.

  4. Observations:

Sheehan has the stuff but still can’t command it. 88 pitches for 14 outs? Nope. If the plate was 20” wide and every hitter he faced was 6’8” he could go 7, like the real stud in that game, Chris Sale, did. Dodgers bullpen saved that one with a scoreless 4.2 innings. Can’t keep doing that.

Ohtani went 1 for 4 and raised his average. That ain’t right.

Tucker got a fooled badly double then was robbed on wounded duck.

Team 5 for 29 (.128) . Atlanta pitching is pretty not too bad.

    Rojas is looking kinda oldt.

Espinal with a hit (that’s good) but then he f’d it up.

    Anybody seen Muncy?

Now Snell. Can he go 6 against that lineup. No minor leaguers on that squad.

Atlanta is a good team. The Dodgers are better.

    1. Muncy has been in a funk for about a week, and he is striking out more. Ohtani is hitting just .248 and only has 6 homers. No where near the league leaders. Rojas looks like he needs some time on the IL. He got banged a couple of times. We caught Atlanta without Acuna. They are missing a huge piece. Harris as the 4? He is more of a contact guy than a power source.

      1. Is it ime to shake up the lineup, Bear? Maybe get Call and his high numbers in the lineup? Nothing against Ohtani but without the leadoff dingers he is an average hitter right now. And the Ks are becoming more prevalent against lefties. I am sure he will get hot sooner than later. Probably too early with a 2 game lead.

        1. Betts
          Freeman
          Smith
          Ohtani
          Pages
          Tucker
          Muncy
          Call
          Freeland

          Kim, Rushing, Teo, pitcher
          For
          Skeins

        2. I would put Betts where he has the best numbers, and that is leading off. Freeman is my choice for second, he has hit there a lot, then Pages, Ohtani, Smith, Tucker, Muncy, Call and pickem, whoever is playing second. Call has very good bat to ball skills and sets up the top of the order. Give Tei a blow, because right now his trade value is not very high.

    2. We need a Sheehanski version of Sheehan.

Where is Max? I’m not the best person to ask, not that you did.

      1. Muncy has stretches like this every year, and he still leads the team in homers. I thought that was Ohtani’s job, who in my humble opinion still swings at way too many bad pitches, chases first pitches that he cannot barrel up, and has way too many empty at bats. Give me Mookie and soon.

    3. Let’s not compare Sheehan to HOF Sale. That is not fair. They are not even in the same zip code. Vesia was called to get Matt Olson and I thought it was a great call by Roberts. If the Dodgers scored more runs, Sheehan would have stayed in to finish 5.0. Vesia threw 5 pitches. He is good to go today. Hurt 19 pitches, Stewart 18 pitches, Scott 11 pitches. All can go today. Klein might get the day off..

Outside of Freddie’s HR, the one Dodger who made the loudest and most consistent bat to ball contact was Espinal. A guy possibly destined to free agency next week.

  5. The cycle is a silly accomplishment for a player to chase and thusly is just something that rarely occurs. Chasing the most RBI’s should be more notable. Didn’t Puig hit for a HR cycle? If he had then he should be credited with besting all players mentioned above. Also if he had it’s likely he’s not alone to accomplish that feat. The cycle is focused on it seems at every chance though. It did snow in hell when Puig was rated a better 1st. baseman+ above A-Gon for one short moment Haaaaaaa! Last night was a great feel good game. I’m ready for more helpings of that. Is my ADHD showing?

    1. Puig never hit for a cycle. And players do not chase cycles. It is something that happens. Triples are the hardest part to achieve anymore. The day Ohtani hit his 50th homer in Miami, he could have gotten a cycle for the second time in his career, but he tried to stretch a double into a triple and was thrown out. So, he ended up with 3 homers a double and 2 singles. He drove in 10 runs that day. Conversely, when Shawn Green hit his 4 homers, doubled and singled, he drove in 7 runs. Record for a single game is 12 by Jim Bottomley and Mark Whitten. So far, the Home Run Cycle, a solo, 2-run, 3-run and grand slam in the same game has never been done in the major leagues. Chandler Redmond and Tyler Horne, 2 Cardinals prospects did it back in the 1990’s in the minors. The only two times that has ever happened. Puig had exactly 1 grand slam in his career. He never did it in Cuba either.

      1. Ah, so my ADHD is in fact showing! I just remember Vin talking about that when it was in reach enough for our uncle to talk about As hitting a HR along with 3 triples would be a far greater accomplishment would it be recorded as a cycle? That’s the gist of me looking at the cycle as more novelty in that it just occurs. At any rate your story was a very interesting read as ALWAYS.

        1. Thanks Quas. Puig did hit 3 triples in one game in 2014. 7 players have hit 3 homers and a triple though, Kendrys Morales, Ryan Braun, Fred Lynn, Wes Westrum, Pat Seery, Tony Lazzeri and Les Bell.

  6. Don’t know why Doc even bothers with Muncy in the line up vs Sale. No chance.

    1. Last night it looked Muncy feels the same. Like 3 pitches and it’ll be over with.

    2. Because Muncy is hitting .300 against LHP and .272 against RHP. Maybe he was hoping to catch lightning in a bottle. 3 of Muncy’s 9 homers have come off of lefties. You think Freland would fare better?

      1. None of those lefties were Sale. If Doc needs to give Muncy some days off, last night was a perfect time. We will never know if Freeland would have done better, but we do .know that he could not have done more poorly.

  7. Saturday Dodger’s Affiliates’ Schedule
2:05 p.m.: Tulsa (Adam Serwinowski) at Arkansas (Ryan Sloan)
3:35 p.m.: Great Lakes (Aidan Foeller) at Lake County (Jackson Humphries)
4:05 p.m.: Oklahoma City (TBA) vs. Salt Lake (TBA)
6:30 p.m.: Ontario (TBA) at Rancho Cucamonga (Derek Clark)

  8. What a great Friday night game. Playoff type atmosphere and great pitching.
Sale is a treat to watch and the Dodger pitching was superb.

I was a little disappointed that Doc pulled Emmet when he did with 2 outs, depriving him of a win, as it played out. I know Doc was just making a move to win the game but Emmet deserved a win.

The pitch identification names Sale’s massive breaking ball a slider. Maybe that’s what he wants it called but to me it’s a great big curveball or perhaps a sweeper. But no slider. Just call it a bitch.

Freddie taking him deep to center was amazing. What I like more than the homer was how classy Freddie responded to the dinger. No “look-at-me” bat flip to antics as he rounded the bases. No laundry carts, medallions, tridents or other nonsense in the dugout; just a sunflower seed shower. He high fived his mates and has a seat. I hope the Dodgers never stoop to the celebration toys.
Freddie is just anpro and class act.

      1. So let’s call Sale’s nasty breaking ball a “bitch”. No doubt it is damn near unhittable for a LHB.
I just think it’s a sweeper. and not a slider by my definition of its shape.

    1. 25 games between homers. Long stretch for Freddie. Ohtani has not homered since the 27th of April off of the Cubs.

      1. We have a very streaky lineup. It can be very frustrating. Freddie is about the only one to show some career consistency. But it’s all about who gets hot in October. And if it resembles 24&25, our pitching will have to carry us.

  9. Joe and Orel were talking about which cap Freeman would wear when he indeed is inducted into the Hall of Fame. Sorry guys, players do not get to make that choice anymore. That choice is made by the Hall.

    1. True, but according to Greg Maddux, the player does have a lot of say. He loved his time with Chicago and Atlanta and he chose not to have a cap. If going into the HOF without a cap is something that Freddie is adamant about, I cannot see the HOF denying him. We are a long way away from that decision, and the Dodgers are going to have to extend him two more years for there to be such a discussion. That would be 12 years with Atlanta and 8 with LAD.

      1. I understand that. I am not sure he gets extended. He would be 39 during his last season, turning 40 in September. Would AF really extend the guy? Are there any real first base options in the minors? Lots of questions and no answers yet.

  10. Longtime HOF Atlanta Manager, Bobby Cox passed away today at the age of 84.

    RIP Bobby!!!

    1. Yes RIP. He was a very good manager, but still with all those great Braves team, he won just one World Series and 4 NL pennants.

      1. Cox and Vesia should have a contest to see who can not fidget the longest

  11. Dodgers have not exactly knocked the cover off of the ball against Strider. Braves have not done much better against Snell.

    1. It will be interesting to see how Doc handles Snell today. Snell tends to throw a lot of pitches. I am sure they would have preferred he get the start in OKC today and then come back.

I am also sure that the Dodgers prefer Snell to face Atlanta more than Sasaki. Sasaki should do better against the punchless Giants.

  12. Some of those “Deer in the headlights” moments made me wonder how anybody hits Sale. Yogi once said about Koufax, ” I understand how he win 26 games, but I can’t see how he lost six.”. Same might be said about Sale.

  13. The Dodgers announced the claim of left-hander Charlie Barnes off of the Cubs’ waiver wire. Chicago designated Barnes for assignment earlier this week. To create room on the 40-man roster, Los Angeles shifted Tommy Edman to the 60-day IL.

    1. This does not make sense to me. Not that it needs to. But the Cubs are begging for SP and they let this guy go. What does that say? Barnes is 30 and has never been good. Dodgers are going to need to make room when Kiké comes off 60 day IL. I suppose that makes Edwin Díaz the logical move to 60 day IL, but that is it. Although I do not know how hurt Casparius is.

      Maybe Rob Hill sees something.

  14. Mookie Betts, Kiké Hernández, and CT3 meet up again in OKC. Mookie and Kiké on rehab assignments and CT3 having a good year with SLC (LAA AAA Affiliate). I would like to see CT3 get one more shot with the Halos. What could it hurt?

My other hope is for JT to sign a one-day contract and retire as a Dodger.

    1. He gets the “Call” every day of his life! Would be nice if he got some more playing time.

    2. Alex Call is a nice 5th outfielder but has very little power. He’s a league average player. Great backup who you hope never plays. Fact! Don’t shoot the messenger!

  15. Tonight’s batting order. Ohtani, Freeman, Smith, Tucker, Pages, Muncy, Hernandez, Kim, Freeland. Snell pitching.

  16. Snell activated, Stewart placed on 15-day Il with a bone spur in his foot.

  18. They rushed Smell back for this? Takes quite a performance to make me pine for Roki!

    1. I thought he was fine if not good.

Just two balls that were hard-hit (95+ mph EV).

This team is a machine and ridiculously deep

        1. You’re not missing much. Another stinker.

I’ve got Your Friends and Neighbors to watch. Game being recorded. If a miracle happens I’ll watch it tomorrow.

          1. My wife likes that show, we are just getting into Widows Bay. it’s by the person who wrote The Heat
