“Let’s Play Two”

… and they did!

Ernie Banks was famous for that saying, and last night the players took it literally as they played 18 innings! My son texted me that he was worried they were going to have Sandy Koufax start warming up in the bullpen in the seventeenth inning. This was a game for the ages. How so?

  • It was the longest World Series game… ever!
  • Freddie Freeman walked it off… Again!
  • Ohtani hit two HR’s and reached base 9 times in one game.
  • The Dodgers’ much-maligned bullpen got the final 40 outs!
  • Will Klein, a late addition to the World Series roster, threw 72 pitches as he refused to lose and got the win.
  • The Dodgers used 10 pitchers in the game.
  • Clayton Kershaw was brought in to the game with the bases loaded and two out in the 12th inning. After an eight-pitch battle, he completed his mission and got the final out of the inning. If he never pitches another game, this is how we shall remember him. He did his job!

Last night will become known as the Game that Broke the Blue Jays’ Backs and Will!

  1. Ok. Let’s keep going. Always room for improvement. Mookie,, Max, Pages. Mostly useless on offense. TOO MANY POP UPS. Will Ohtani be strong enough to go 6 innings?? And PLeasse —extra innings too hard on us East Coast fans

  2. Craziest game I ever saw! From Shohei’s record setting night to Klein being the last guy out of the bullpen and pitching the game of his life. If there was ever a team, this was it. So many heroes. WOW!

  3. first of all let me say i am exhausted! not complaining mind you, but physically and emotionally exhausted! wow! the bullpen was outstanding! And let’s also give glasnow credit. If not for the error, he probably would’ve given up one run at the most, and probably pitched 6+. … Now we see how the jays are going to pitch to ohtani, excuse me, not pitch to ohtani! Mookie has to get it going! Except for the base hit, nothing but pop up’s. Let’s go Mookie!…..Teo, i apologize for calling you to be benched! great game! I’m still saying Pages could use a day off. Just my opinion though. … Will Smith is the best catcher in baseball!! Will Doc give him a breather tonight? I’m not sure, but he can always rest after they win the WORLD SERIES!!! …. Base running wasn’t great last night, but it all worked out for the best! Klien? what a great performance from a guy who probably wasn’t even a thought 3 weeks ago to be included on the roster! Look for him to take Kopech’s spot on the team next season! Henriquez? money last night! Clayton? good for him! The bullpen was almost flawless. … Hope Vesia and his wife are doing ok. he’s been a vital part of the team. But his family comes first. may God bless them and grant them the strength to overcome their grief.

  4. I’m going to do a mini-rant here, so if you have no interest stop reading.

But first, please do read this Passan piece which has a lovely moment between Sandy Koufax and Will Klein after the game:

    https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/46753415/world-series-game-3-history-18-innings-los-angeles-dodgers-walkoff-freddie-freeman

Last night, some numbskull called out Treinen as being a “MAGA” person. Other people were doing nothing but calling out Mooke Betts and other for pop-ups (this may have been on X, but I think here). Can we please just appreciate how great things are?

Like do we need to really attribute one’s political leanings to a baseball player trying his best for the team we support?!??!?!? What the actual fuck.

And I’m sure Betts is struggling. Baseball is fucking hard, and he’s trying hard. Let it go. Pages is struggling too, fine. The Blue Jays are REALLY GOOD. Really good. They could still win the World Series. I bet there’s probably a 40% chance they will. Those are pretty decent probabilistic odds.

Will Klein, as noted in Passan’s piece is a huge testament to how great things are as a Dodger fan.

I’m sure a few people read the below and said, “Friedman rummaging through the trash heap again” or something to that effect.

July 2: “The Dodgers acquired RHP Will Klein from the Seattle Mariners in exchange for minor league pitcher Joe Jacques. The Dodgers also recalled right-handed Ryan Loutos and optioned RHP Noah Davis. In order to make room on the roster for Klein, the Dodgers designated RHP Chris Stratton for assignment.”

But it’s moves like Klein that counterweigh moves for Ohtani. It’s why this is such a great time.

It is a great time. Not just in baseball, but everywhere. Life is amazing. I just read that they have cured blindness for a cohort of people. Curing blindness! That used to be a miracle. Will Klein throwing 72 pitches! That may be a miracle.

We’re living the time of miracles. Let’s enjoy that, and not fixate about MAGA or great batters undercutting a MLB pitch by mms.

    1. Leave off political posts. But as long as people are civil, don’t tell people what to think or say

    2. What do you expect from fans when the MLB commissioner moves athe all Star game from Atlanta for political voting changes to a state that already had the same rules. He should be the first management personnel to be fired and put a former player or manager like Joe Torre in. There is no room in baseball for crying or politics, and the fans should respect that. Well said Bluto.

  5. So Blue Jays plan is to walk Ohtani every time (or most). So the only way to make them pay for that is if your number 9 and number 2 hitter get on base. It worked because Mookie and Pages were terrible. (1-13 yuk). We know probably there will be no changes in lineup, but my suggestion is bat Kike 9th. He gets on base now and then . Oh yes and Maybe Mookie can put ball in play instead of Pop ups

  6. well i said mookie popped up. it wasn’t meant in a “ numbskull” rant. rather an observation. mookie is my favorite dodger (not named kershaw), so it’s not like i am hating on him. as far as politics, if that becomes a thing here, i will stop posting and reading here. Even Doc is considering benching Pages. if a player isn’t productive, he can be benched. Edman’s error could have been a crushing blow to the team. It happens. we all were probably upset when it happened, but nobody wanted him removed from the game. he came back and made 2 plays that helped save the game. i thought Teo could’ve used a night off. i was dead wrong. doesn’t mean i hate him. just the opposite. we know Mookie has the pedigree. Pages doesn’t yet. Probably why he was removed from the game last night. Trienan isn’t the same pitcher he was last season. But if we look at him for his political or religious beliefs, we’re not a fan of him or the dodgers. the dodgers are in great shape and politics aren’t!

    1. Well, not seeing much politics here (thankfully) . I don’t think we are ‘hating’ anyone. Just frustrated to see the terrible ABs from Max, Mookie and Pages. And certainly they are frustrated as well. Will Roberts tweak the lineup? Its possible. Giving a guy a ay off is not a disaster. But then the other logical benching would have been Teo. So its fun while we are winning.

      1. Any guy who gets a “day off” is always available later in the game if needed. It’s the freaking World Series.

  7. Tied for the longest game in World Series history. Let’s be accurate here. Max and Freddie hit their homers with no-outs. But the game in 2018 went 7 hours and 20 minutes. Mookie and most of the offense had a bad night. Ohtani and Teo accounted for 8 of the hits, the rest of the team had 8 combined with Freddie and Kike getting 2 each. None of the Dodgers hitters are tearing up the playoffs. The highest post-season average on the team is Smith at .293. Call in limited ABs is hitting .571. Muncy and Pages are the two regulars who are below .200 for the entire playoffs. By comparison, the Jays have 3 regulars hitting over .300 this post-season led by Guerrero who is hitting .414. Barger and Clement are the other two over .300. Springer had an MRI after last night’s game and might be lost for the rest of the series.

  8. Great comment by Bluto above, and I heartily endorse it.

Great story about Koufax and Klein.

  9. Karma never forgets. It sometimes takes its time, in this case 8 years, but it never actually forgets…….Tough break Mr. Springer

  10. I have a feeling that we may see some whacky stuff tonight.

No idea what it might be.

However, Ohtani has to be gassed. Even if he was just hitting, getting on base 9 times yesterday and today would be taxing, but having to pitch as well?

I went to another site and many are roasting Doc, because of… well, that’s what they do. It’s their mission in life.

  11. Hard to do but here’s my top 5 heroes from last night:

    5. Teo
    4. Edman
    3. Shohei
    2. Klein
    1. Freeman

    1. I switch Klein & Freeman. Freddie is “expected”. Klein? LITERALLY NO ONE would have scripted that.

  12. nice 5! i’m not sure i wouldn’t flip klein &freddie. but doesn’t matter. honorable mention to clayton! it was only one batter, but boy it was a big one! wrobleski also did a fantastic job! he, banda, dryer, and possibly henriquez are for sure on deck tonight. Sheehan in a pinch? Clayton should also be available for multiple innings. Let’s pray ohtani goes deep into the game. And pray for no extra innings! A win tonight won’t cement it, but it will be a major blow to the jays. And Blake Snell will not be “off” 2 games in a row!

  14. Will Smith has to be gassed. I thought the Dodgers may have given him some time off and bring him in in about the seventh inning. This team is awesome.

  15. I guess Doc trust Banda over Dreyer because of experience. I don’t. Banda looks like a guy afraid to throw his fastball. Treinen is so toast.

  16. Hope this is the end of Doc’s blind-spot with Treinan.
He was a big reason we won last year, but the opposite so far this year.
    6-hits allowed by 9-hitters.

  17. blue jays aren’t cooperating with how i wanted game 4 to go.
we need some dodger magic right now.

  18. Dodgers once again lost a chance to win the world series at Dodger Stadium because the Dodgers’ offense failed to drive in runs; they just can’t rely on strong pitching alone!
