Rants & Raves

I wasn’t going to post today, but I had so many comments to make that I am just making them a post.

  • Esteury Ruiz is an exceptionally fast and athletic outfielder, but his defensive performance in center field has been inconsistent. While his elite speed provides him with impressive range, his overall defensive metrics suggest he should play LF or DH. Ruiz is on the Taxi Squad!
  • If I were a betting man, I would put money on Conforto before I put it on Ruiz, Outman, or Ward. You can have a man crush on Outman all you want, but he’s never going to hit in MLB with a 54% strikeout rate. That is purely delusional. Ruiz is just a placeholder, but speed kills, so he might have a shot, but he’s purely a LF… never trust him in CF. Ward has the potential to come up and hit a few bombs before flaming out… or he could just flame out. He’s a classic AAAA player. That said, I am not afraid of giving him a shot!
  • I find it extremely silly that fans would question why Kim did not play last night. You can wonder why. But to attach something nefarious to it is not only foolish, it borders on moronic, because you don’t have all the information. Hyeseong Kim did not play on Wednesday because the Dodgers are being cautious with him due to a shoulder injury. He had a labrum surgery in October and is still working his way back to full strength. Sometimes he still experiences soreness.
  • I frequently call myself a moron, so there is that! In building any muscle injury back, when you experience soreness, it is good to rest – they want him to be 100% at the end of the season. I think he is doing pretty well considering he had surgery in October. I used to love NASCAR and IndyCar… not so much anymore! I do remember where I was when Dale died. I was watching the race in the garage, and when he wrecked, I ran to Lowe’s to get some parts. I heard it at Lowe’s and could not believe it!
  • The Dodgers are again loaded with Top 100 Prospects by BA:
  • 2. Roki Sasaki
  • 28. Dalton Rushing
  • 35. Alex Freeland
  • 37. Josue De Paula
  • 40. Zyhir Hope – #40
  • 74. Jackson Ferris
  • 96. Eduardo Quintero
  • 97 Mike Sirota
  • Here’s what they said on Sirota:
  • Mike Sirota, OF, Dodgers (No. 97)
  • Sirota set the California League on fire, and he’s been just as good since his promotion to High-A Great Lakes. While he may not have as much offensive upside as teammates Josue De Paula and Zyhir Hope, Sirota is close to their level, and he’s a potentially plus defender in center field.
  • I think the Dodgers now have the second most (8) players in the Top 100 of any team. The Mariners have 9.

  1. Three by trade, Hope,Ferris, and Sirota, two by the MLB draft Rushing and Freeland and three by International signings Sasaki,De Paula and Quintero. Nice combination of the three ways to acquire talent especially where the lower position the Dodgers draft each year.

  4. Playing for October and slow walking the season because of injuries could cost the Dodgers home field advantage. Here are some examples: “Even if the Dodgers split this series against the Mets with a win today, they’ve already lost the season series, which could make October interesting. Teams’ head-to-head records are the first tiebreaker when it comes to postseason seeding, so if these two teams end up with the same record, the Mets will have home field advantage in a potential matchup.

And the Mets aren’t the only ones: The Dodgers also lost the season series to the Cubs, who would be in the postseason if regular play ended today, and lost two out of three games to the Phillies in April. They’ll have the chance to make up for it in September against the Phillies”..

    1. We are really concerned about tie breakers in June???

Its all about hows hot, and whos healthy in October.

I dont care if we dont have HFA, lets get hot and healthy, thats WAY more important.

  6. It’s hard to get a handle on how you truly feel about Outman, because you’re so inscrutable, but I would venture a guess that, maybe, you don’t hold Outman in high regard as a potential MLB player. Perhaps you even considered him nothing more than a 4th or 5th outfielder.

Because we’ve never read you making this point before, certainly not a million times.

What are your feelings on Gavin Lux as a shortstop? Do you think he’s capable? We really want to know, oh Wise One.

BTW, the tweet about Bauer above is another reminder of what an absolutely terrible human being Lindsay Hill is. I hate followed her on X for a bit, and am convinced she has a narcissistic personality disorder.

    1. Let me tell you how I really feel about Outman:

He is a great guy, hustles all the time, and is universally liked by his teammates. He is not injury-prone and can run through walls without a scratch. His only problem is that he is Joey Gallo at bat.

Bauer is no angel, but what happened to him is shameful!

      1. I will concede that you were right about Outman’s K problem, and Lux’s deficiencies.

I’m back off the Lux bandwagon.

Bauer might just be a terrible person, but he met his match and then some.

      2. Totally agree – he needed someone to stand up for him bit no one did!

      3. What Bauer did is shameful.
He hurt women. There are multiple accusers, not just one. Defenders always overlook that fact and want to portray Bauer as the victim. His defense is that it was consensual, but accusers say he went too far. Turns out it’s pretty hard to say “stop” or “no” if you’re getting choked out. The MLB investigated and rendered their decision. Sucks for Bauer, but he’s no martyr…
        .
As for how you feel about Outman, your efforts at sugar-coating your attitude is pretty lame. Your disdain for Outman has been evident for a long time.
Exactly why you root so hard against Outman has been a mystery since he was first called up and homered in his first AB.
If your boy Miguelito had done that, would you have called him “lucky”? If Miguelito had put together a rookie season like Outman’s, you’d have been crowing, “I told you so!” But you always seem offended by whatever success Outman has had–you called his swing ugly, you claimed he ran poor routes–perhaps because it accentuated Miguelito’s struggles. When Vargas showed a little bit of progress, and Outman slumped, you likened your boy to Aesop’s tortoise, and Outman to his hare: a loser. Everybody here knows that you love for your predictions to come true. You always remind us.
Hey, remember when you praised your son’s defense at 2B as “stellar”? Good times.
On a more cost-conscious team, Outman would be on the roster earning the minimum. Even if he wasn’t hitting much, he’d be providing quality defense. But this is the fat-cat Dodgers, so Conforto is on the roster, earning $17 million while not hitting and providing mediocre defense.
Today Conforto broke an 0 for 30 slump with RISP with a key single to put the Dodgers ahead.
        Yippee! $17 million well spent!
The latest news re Outman, who has been hot in OKC, is that he was summoned to Dodger Stadium, joining Ruiz on the taxi squad. Very odd, because it suggested that players might be going on the IL–perhaps Edman and Kim.
But now we hear that Ruiz and Outman will head back to OKC.
While you have suggested that Outman has zero MLB future, I still think he’s an injury away from returning. Could be Teo, could be Pages, could be Edman…
        Could be Conforto!
We don’t know what the brass is thinking, but perhaps Conforto bought himself some more time and chances with today’s clutch hit. Bob Nightengale was reporting that the Dodgers were shopping for a left-handed bat.
It would be a darn shame if Conforto strains an oblique.

    1. “Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts revealed that both James Outman and Esteury Ruiz are with the team on the taxi squad.Roberts said both Tommy Edman and Hyeseong Kim look healthy, and the taxi outfield duo will likely end up going back to Oklahoma City.Ruiz and Outman were with the team in case one or both of Edman and Kim had to go on the injured list”.

  7. Interesting Stats from Around the League:

    Walker Buehler – 4.44 ERA/1.31 WHIP
    Matt Chapman – .242 BA/.797 OPS
    Willy Adames – .199 BA/.603 OPS
    Patrick Bailey – .194 BA/.540 OPS
    Kenley Jansen – 4.66 ERA/1.45 WHIP
    Luis Robert, Jr. .177/.552 OPS
    Miguel Vargas – .237/.730 OPS
    Alex Verdugo – .257 BA/.640 OPS
    Keibert Ruiz – .264 BA/.645 OPS
    Garrett Clevinger – 2.78 ERA/0.93 WHIP
    Trey Sweeney – .222 BA/.591 OPS
    Zach McKinistry – .271/.777 OPS

    1. Luke Raley is having a decent year for the Mariners, too.

      Another interesting stat:

Andy Pages has the same home run total and higher batting average than Kyle Tucker – and he plays better OF defense, too.

      Tucker walks more.

      The Dodgers don’t need Buehler.

      1. Tucker started strong… but Pete Crow-Armstrong is now The Man on the rising Cubbies.
So maybe Tucker won’t get a $400 million contract this winter?
The stats from various players around the league are interesting.
Here’s some OPS data from OKC:
        Ryan Ward .996
        Outman .904
        Freeland .826
        Feduccia .844
        Ruiz .792
As a point of reference, Rushing was at .938 when he got called up, and Kim was at .798.
Will the Dodgers please trade Ward? While Outman and evidently Ruiz still seem to fit in the big club’s plans, there’s never been an inkling that Ward would be called up. (Is his defense that bad? Did he fool around with Stan Kasten’s daughter? There must be a reason.)
Former OKC centerfielder Drew Avans has finally made it to The Show with the Athletics. Will Ryan Ward ever get a chance?

  8. Conforto is in another 0 for 15. He has a 33% K rate and has twice as many Ks (57) as hits (28).

Landon Knack is not a big league starting pitcher.

    1. Knack is a AAA pitcher, nothing more. As soon as pitching reinforcements return from the IL, he will be in Oklahoma City with his 2025 MLB 5.12 ERA and 10 homeruns given up in 38 innings pitched. Hard to justify him being on the roster.Homer Gonsolin is not a sure bet being on the future roster either.

    2. Conforto thanks you for the whiff. Premature rejectulation on your part.

  9. GREAT SCOTT!

    His velo is back.

Maybe the pitching gurus “fixed” him.”

    Conforto gets two more days!

  10. Tyrese Halliburton is something else. Has anyone ever hit more big shots in 1 postseason??
