Down on the Farm

Jim Callis, Sam Dykstra and Jonathan Mayo of MLB.com ranked the MLB Farm Systems and the Dodgers are currently #5, behind these teams:

  1. Tampa Bay Rays
  2. Minnesota Twins
  3. Baltimore Orioles
  4. Cleveland Indians

5. Los Angeles Dodgers
2024 preseason rank: 8
2023 midseason rank: 6
2023 preseason rank: 2
2022 midseason rank: 2

Top 100 prospects: Dalton Rushing, C/OF (No. 39); Josue De Paula, OF (No. 49); River Ryan, RHP (No. 65); Alex Freeland, SS (No. 79); Jackson Ferris, LHP (No. 90)

We write this every time we do system rankings, but the Dodgers never stop winning or developing prospects. They’re a lock for their 12th consecutive playoff appearance and responded to graduating three Top 100 prospects in 2023 by having De Paula, Ryan, Freeland and Ferris all jump onto the list since the start of this season. They also have an incredible wave of teenage talent just getting started in shortstops Joendry Vargas, Emil Morales and Kellon Lindsey; and outfielders Eduardo Quintero, Zyhir Hope and Ching-Hsien Ko.

Of course, Ryan is out for most, if not all of 2025, as is Emmet Sheehan, but Freeland and Ferris are fast risers, and Vargas and Hope are also forces to be reckoned with.

Now, all they have to do is win it all this year. The jury is still out on Walker Buehler. He looks rusty. He’s not getting that 98 MPH Fastball back. Can he adjust? We shall find out. I saw reason for hope last night.

  1. Wednesday scores
Oklahoma City 13, Las Vegas 7
    Tulsa 2, Midland 1
Lake County 2, Great Lakes 0
    Visalia 9, Rancho Cucamonga 3

    Thursday schedule
1:30 p.m. PT (doubleheader): Great Lakes (Peter Heubeck & Wyatt Crowell) at Lake County (Yorman Gomez & Alonzo Richrdson)
5 p.m.: Tulsa (Carlos Duran) vs. Midland (Mason Barnett)
6:30 p.m.: Rancho Cucamonga (Hyun-Seok Jang) at Visalia (Adonys Perez)
7:05 p.m.: Oklahoma City (Bobby Miller) at Las Vegas (J.T. Ginn)
“Thursday in Las Vegas is a battle on the mound of former Dodgers first-round draft picks. Miller, picked 29th overall in 2020, did sign, while 2018 No. 30 pick Ginn did not”.

  2. How much rope will the Dodgers give Buehler during this closely contested t race for the Division?

  3. Brasier has 12 strikeouts in 8 scoreless innings with Oklahoma City, and is on track to rejoin Dodgers Saturday in St. Louis.
Who will be DFA, Honeywell or Banda who are both out of options when Brasier is reinstated?

    1. Honeywell likely the odd man out. Banda is the second lefty in the pen, so he is pretty safe. Cannot wait to see Rushing in camp next spring. Rockies DFAd Elias Diaz, the all-star catcher. Another outfielder to consider as a free agent next year, Anthony Santander. Switch hitter, plays RF, has 36 bombs this year. Set a record for homers in a season by a switch hitter for the Orioles. Funny, I thought Eddie Murray would have had more than that in a season, but the most he ever hit was 33 in 1983. But he also hit for average.

  4. Well my optimism for Walker took a bit of a hit last night. He can’t seem to regain his control or command. How long of a rope will the dodgers give him. I don’t believe he’ll be a factor in the playoffs, or maybe even the rest of the regular season. Hope i’m wrong, but last night was pretty ugly! …. Mark, the defense Kevin K. brings to the table, if it comes down to KK or Heyward who you keeping? i’m leaning toward Kevin. K! ….. With Edman coming soon, i don’t think Ahmed survives. no need for him, especially if Taylor makes it back. …. Miguel Vargas. Gosh i feel bad for the guy. First to Worst! He looks so miserable. Maybe he can use this as motivation to become what most scouts believed he can be. Play your way off that train wreck! …. When’s Max coming? When’s Tommy E. coming? … The umpires in the first 3 games have been, shall we say, Sh——y! strike zone all over the place! Both ways. Is it just me, or is Ohtani swinging before he even gets to the plate? Damn slow down a tick! listen to me! i sound like i know something about baseball! oh well, gotta go get a physical! Wife making sure i’m around for a while longer. Someone has to mow the grass. She doesn’t!

    1. I posted the same thing on the other board about KK. A play like that in a playoff or world series could make all the difference!

    2. Edman and Max will be activated when the Dodgers return home on Monday. Then the real roster crunch starts.

    1. I feel good for Vargas. He has a better chance to succeed with the White Sox than he did with the Dodgers.
More importantly, he just helped the Dodgers land Kopech (who has been terrific),Edman and a promising young pitcher.

      1. Well, he isn’t doing it. If anything, he has gone into the proverbial funk. He has 5 hits in 43 at bats.

        1. Yeah, it’s a rough start. But if the White Sox win the rest of their games, he might make another playoff roster!
Meanwhile, Busch is hitting to a .800 OPS for the Cubs. And the guys the Dodgers got for him, Ferris and Zyhir Hope, are fast-rising prospects.
Good piece in the LAT on Kopech as a potential closer. I remember when he first came up there was a lot of hype about this talent. Moving from SP to RP has really benefited him.
Has Ahmed been DFA’d yet? Edman is slated for CF, but he’s a quality SS too. Sure hope that he and Max help get the Dodgers back on track.
And I’m still annoyed with Mookie about that ugly error. I wonder if he and Roberts had a chat about that.

          1. Ahmed is Miggy’s back up. Not sure what happens when Edman and Max come back. Ahmed is for sure on the proverbial bubble. Edman and Kike can both play SS, Taylor can also, but I do not think CT-3 is going to come back this season.

  5. yeah duke, kelly is going to suddenly have a high ankle sprain. Man i like Honeywell! would hate to lose that versatility. 1-4 innings if you need it. Banda has been very good! Brasier will be a huge factor down the stretch! Love joe, but he’s been mediocre lately. His stuff is outstanding, just never has really harnessed it though!

  6. 2:10 PM ET EARLY GAME

    Dodgers (71-50)
    Brewers (68-52)

    SP Jack Flaherty R
    9-5 2.97 ERA
    SP Tobias Myers R
    6-5 2.79 ERA

    Confirmed Lineup
    DH S. Ohtani L
    LF T. Hernandez R
    1B F. Freeman L
    C Will Smith R
    2B Gavin Lux L
    SS Miguel Rojas R
    RF J. Heyward L
    CF Andy Pages R
    3B E. Hernandez R

    In Domed Stadium

    NO MOOKIE

    1. 11:10 PST. Starts at 12:10 here. Day game after a night game. 3 games in a row after being out for a month and a half. Makes sense to give him a blow. Still a solid lineup, not a sub .200 hitter in the bunch.

      1. Day game after a night game. Three games in a row after missing a month and a half. Keep him fresh for the Cardinal series.

  7. Brasier will come off the 60 day IL and Ryan goes on it. Then Grove gets sent to OKC that way Banda and Honeywell are safe for now. When Trienen comes back things get complicated.

  8. The Ump was horrible last night. He had no idea what was a strike and his zone changed by the inning. Buehler was clipping the bottom of the zone and not getting any of the calls. I think a few more starts and he will be back in the rotation as someone we can count on. Need a bounce back win today.

  9. Roberts said he hasn’t decided if Tyler Glasnow will start Friday night against the St. Louis Cardinals on regular rest or if the team will insert a spot starter — most likely left-hander Justin Wrobleski, who would have to be called up from triple-A Oklahoma City — and push Glasnow back to Saturday.

  10. someone must have said something to nerdy nelson,,last few games he’s been a lot better. just keep jolly Jess off the air and it’s ok. And ,i’m not against women in the booth, just can’t take her giggles and never stop yacking! just my opinion.

  11. just curious, is Kopech only a one inning pitcher? Hurry back Brasier, hudson is running on fumes!! Trienan and hudson should trade places.. No production from ohthani with runners on. Doc must have figured the game was over, he used his backup catcher as a pinch hitter. no criticism just an observation.

    1. Yes. He is one of those 100 percent guys. He goes all out for his inning and that is it. At least at this point in his career. They split the series and could just as easily won all four. On to St. Louis who were just swept by the Reds.

      1. I always think well they are due to play good now. That means they will probably play great and win the series. What kind of attitude or thought process is that.

  12. Bobby Miller was scratched from his Triple-A start tonight with OKC. He is being held back in case the Dodgers wind up needing coverage this weekend, per source, not because of any physical issue (was skipped two starts ago with adductor tightness).

      1. Who goes and who stays with all the upcoming changes to the starting rotation and bullpen? Who will be the 13 soon to be rostered pitchers.? Who will be the 13 active rostered players when Muncy and Edman return next week? A lot for the front office to think about and finally decide on.

  13. Why didn’t AF and BG give the kid a chance?
“The Tigers are calling up SS Trey Sweeney to the big leagues, per source. The former first rounder has been on a tear of late and was one of two prospects coming from the Dodgers in return for Jack Flaherty”. I wish the kid nothing but good luck.

    1. Veterans at every position is not always the answer. Rookies help maintain a flexible payroll.

    2. What to me is mind boggling is that the Dodgers will take a chance on an unproven rookie pitcher more often than not and not on an unproven rookie position player less often than not.

      1. It has always been my opinion that Sweeney is not a starting SS and Freeland has passed him up.

Many Dodgers fans were upset when they let McKinstry go too, but he has done nothing…

        Ditto Eddys Leonard.

  14. i agree AVF! i was extremely disappointed when they traded Sweeney!! Really believe he can be a big league SS or 3rd baseman. Good possibility Flaherty walks in free agency, so nothing in return. Flaherty. meanwhile has not been a sure thing . Awful 1st inning yesterday, settled down for a couple of innings, then pitch count got away from him. Dodgers could really use more from their starters. Kopech looks great. some or most ofthe others looked semi-gassed. They could very well be in second place by Sunday’s end, or they could sweep the slumping cardinals. … Hopefully Max is 100% healthy, they need him to be a “very” good defender . Kiki has botched a few plays. Edman has to hit, period!! Barnes looks more like himself lately. Heyward is a question mark. Ahmed doesn’t scare anyone. Kevin K? occasional hits with his defense, i”ll take it! This potential lineup could be a juggernaut! Or it could be average.

  15. Dave Roberts gives the latest on the #Dodgers injuries:

    Justin Wrobleski will start tonight
    Tommy Edman returns Monday
    Max Muncy returns Tuesday

    1. Potential Dodgers Lineup

      Shohei Ohtani, DH
      Mookie Betts, RF
      Freddie Freeman, 1B
      Teoscar Hernández, LF
      Max Muncy, 3B
      Will Smith, C
      Gavin Lux, 2B
      Tommy Edman, CF
      Miguel Rojas, SS

  16. “The two worst trades in major league baseball history both belong to the Red Sox,” Colin Cowherd said. “They gave up Babe Ruth, and they gave up Mookie Betts.

“You think I’m being hyperbolic here, Mookie Betts had been gone for two months. The kid’s incredible. When he was in his prime, the Red Sox were like, ‘We’re going to move him to the Dodgers.’ Yeah, you’ll need a search party for the guys they got for him because only one player still remains with the Red Sox.”

  17. Mookie was not going to resign with the BoSox. Boston might have given up years of control, plus earning potential (marketing) from their young star player, but this is yet another example that prospects are a complete crapshoot.

In this day and age, teams are trading years of control, not necessarily a longterm commitment from any given player, as players follow the money (by their choosing) once they become free agents.

I get the Babe Ruth knock, but the current state of baseball makes it extremely rare when a player starts and ends its career with the same team.

  18. 8:15 PM ET

    Dodgers (71-51)
    Cardinals (60-61)

    SP Justin Wrobleski L
    0-1 4.05 ERA
    SP Miles Mikolas R
    8-9 5.30 ERA

    Confirmed Lineup
    DH S. Ohtani L
    RF Mookie Betts R
    1B F. Freeman L
    LF T. Hernandez R
    2B Gavin Lux L
    C Will Smith R
    SS Miguel Rojas R
    CF K. Kiermaier L
    3B E. Hernandez R

    89° Wind 6 mph O

  19. That ought to end the Kiermaier argument. They keep him and option Pages out. Gives them a pair of lefty bats off of the bench, Heyward-Kiermaier. Pages can come back when the rosters increase. Much needed win, and guess who pitched a good inning. Everybody’s whipping boy, Joe Kelly. Kopech was nails out of the pen for the close. One pitch was clocked at 103. Nasty stuff. 3 homers were nice, but I liked the 2 strike hits and going 3-6 with runners in scoring position. Wrobleski was not impressive. Too many first pitch balls. And giving up 3 homers is never a good thing. But because of Kiermaier’s great catch, 3-run homer, and driving in another run with a single, the kid got his first MLB win. Miller and Brasier will be activated tomorrow. I think Grove might get sent down. Muncy went 0-5 tonight with 2 K’s. Taylor was 1-4 with a walk. Edman did not play. Rushing, Cartaya, Hoese and Ward (2) all hit homers.

  20. Ohtani is something like 5 for his last 43. Nelson tried to justify it by saying but three of those hits were homers. Well, when your 700-million-dollar man is stranding runners’ night after night, you are not going to win much. And I stand by what I said before, Mookie should be leading off, Freddie second, Teo third and put Ohtani in the put up or shut up slot at #4. Or switch Freddie and let Ohtani hit second. Then Teo and Freddie. You can put Freddie anywhere 2-4 and he hits over .300. He hits .297 in the cleanup spot; I will take that any day. Or go away from this left-right-left-right crap, and put your best leadoff man, Mookie, your 700-mil man, Ohtani, and your best hitter, Freeman, then the power guy, Teo, Smith, Muncy, Lux, Rojas, Edman as a second leadoff guy. That right there is their best offensive lineup, and it is pretty damn good defensively. Come Tuesday when Mad Max returns, that is the 9 I would like to see. Now the starting pitching, well, that is something else again. The kids, Stone, Miller, Wrobleski, are going to have to step up. Hopefully come playoff time it will be Flaherty, Glasnow, Yamamoto, Kershaw, and a cast of thousands.

  21. 08/16/24 Los Angeles Dodgers sent SS Chris Taylor on a rehab assignment to Oklahoma City Baseball Club.

  22. i’m not sure Heyward is doing enough to be the one getting to stay! With Mookie back in right field, Edman on the way, and Pages at least has been hitting lately, would they consider letting Jason go? Plus, Taylor on a rehab assignment, he’ll be back too, count on it ! Nice win last night! Agree. KK. just cemented his spot on this team! Are we positive Max will be healthy? Edman might get the majority of playing time at 3rd. …. Is this just another “break” for Glasnow? Hopefully that’s all it is! … Yamamoto really needs to be healthy! All signs say he is! … Finally, I love Joe Kelly! He really looked good last night, but he had been mediocre prior to last night. Like i said before, he has electric stuff. He just needs to harness it!
