Dodgers Most of Us Have Forgotten

I like going back and looking at old baseball cards I have. Sometimes you see one and go, oh yeah, I remember seeing that guy play a time or two. We remember the stars and the fringe guys are often just not even thought about. Even though they might contribute at a critical moment to the team’s success.

Beyond their moving to LA, I do not have many memories of those kinds of players. I would have to go back and check the teams’ stats to even remember most of their names. A couple do stick out who factored at a critical time. One, Sandy Amoros, I profiled on this site a while ago. Another, whom I did not profile, was Al Gionfriddo. A journeyman outfielder who for one shining moment, was the poster boy for a game saving catch. His catch off of Joe DiMaggio in the 6th game of the 1947 World Series was spectacular.

Gionfriddo robs Jolting Joe. Game 6, 1947 World Series.

Just one of the many players over history who have contributed without being that super player. Some have done far less. But at least they can say, hey, I made it to the show. Now, I realize most of these guys were never going to be stars, but at some point, in time, they made some sort of contribution. More well know of course is a guy like Charlie Culberson. His shining moment came on the day Vin Scully broadcast his last game at Dodger Stadium. And it helped the Dodgers clinch the division.

It was one of the most memorable moments in Dodger history. And a journeyman player, a guy who played in 34 games for the Dodgers that year. He actually hit pretty good that season for them, .299. He was 27 then, he is 34 now and still trying to hang on in the majors. One of the highlights of his career no doubt. He even had Scully autograph the bat.

LOS ANGELES, CA – SEPTEMBER 25: Charlie Culberson

Some of us remember Larsen’s perfect game in the 56 World Series. But how many without checking the box score remember the guy who made the final out? Dale Mitchell was in his 10th year in the majors. He was also nothing more than a pinch hitter most of the time. He appeared in 19 games for the Dodgers after he was purchased from the Indians on 29th of July. Mitchell through most of his career was a very good hitter. His career line was .312/41/403. He also did not strike out much, 119 times in 3984 at bats. Pretty impressive. He walked over 340 times.

He played exactly 2 games for Brooklyn in the outfield. At 34 years old, he just did not have the range anymore. In the 1956 World Series, Mitchell appeared in 4 games, and was 0-4. But it was that final at bat when he struck out that he is most remembered for. He was Larsen’s last out of 27 in a row. A ignominious end to a very good career.

Dale Mitchell

Look up and down Dodger rosters since 58. And you will find many familiar names, and every now and then, a name pops up and you go, dang, I forgot he wore the Dodger uni. Many just had a cup of coffee. Some spent a year or maybe a little more than a year. One of those guys for me was John Hale. Hale was an outfielder drafted by the Dodgers in the 14th round in 1971.

He climbed slowly up the ladder and then in 1974 he was called up from AA Waterbury and had 4 at bats and got 4 hits with a double and a run batted in. At Albuquerque in 75, he was called up and played in 44 games hitting 6 homers and driving in 22. He went back to the Dukes in 76 and was tearing the league up with a .321 average. He played in 44 games for LA but only hit .154. Still, the team thought he had value and could help the big club. He went back to AAA to start the 77 season. Again, he lit up the PCL hitting .340 in 15 games. He was called up again, getting into 79 games and hitting .241 with a couple of homers. That September he was picked up on waivers by the Blue Jays. 12 days later they sold him to the Mariners. John would stick in baseball until 1981. But other than 42 games with the Mariners in 79, he never made it back to the majors. The main reason I remember him so well is that he hit homers in two of the games I went to in 1975.

I also remember the guys who were supposed to be these real hot prospects and they never made it. Orlando Alvarez, an outfielder who could hit. He handled pitching well in AAA and had some pop in his bat. He was close to a .300 hitter in the minors. He was from Puerto Rico. But with all they hype, he only got 51 at bats in the majors. 9 of those came with the Dodgers, the other 42, with the Angels. He hit two homers as an Angel. But he was out of American baseball at the age of 26 after playing with AA Oklahoma City in 1978. He continued to play in Puerto Rico until 1983. He died at age 64 in 2016.

Another supposed can’t miss player, was infielder, Nate Oliver. He was a second baseman most of the time. He hit around .300 most of his time in AAA in the Dodger system. His assets were speed and a great glove. But none of that showed up at the major league level. His fielding was decent, but he was caught almost as many times as he stole a base. 17-15. After playing parts of five seasons in LA, he was sent to the Giants along with Ron Hunt for Frances Kasheta and Tom Haller. After a year with the Giants, he was traded to the Yankees for Charley Smith. After only one at bat as a Yankee he was traded to the Cubs for Lee Elia a pitcher. He had two homers in his career, one as a Dodger and one as a Cub. Little side note, Lee Elia, the pitcher he was traded for, went on to manage the Cubs for two years and also the Phillies for two more.

When I want to get a little nostalgic, I go to old Dodger media guides. They have a section that lists all of the former Dodger players by the number they wore, they also list them alphabetically. For instance, I did not know Don Demeter wore # 7 in 1961. I always remember him as #2, But then I remembered that Leo Durocher returned to the Dodgers as a coach in 61. Leo always wore #2. Another nice feature is that they list all of the Dodgers trades from 1958 on.

Their first deadline deal on June 15th, 1958, brought Steve Bilko and Johnny Klippstein to LA for Don Newcombe. But one of their most important trades that year came in December when they sent Gino Cimoli to the Cardinals for Wally Moon and a minor league pitcher. That turned out to be highway robbery. Cimoli lasted one season in St. Louis before he was sent to the Pirates. Moon helped the Dodgers win the 1959 championship and was a part of the 63 and 65 champs. For me, it is always fun to look back and remember those days.

Some name players spent time with the Dodgers as their careers wore down, including Rocky Colavito, Wes Covington, Ken Boyer, Jim Bunning, Moose Skowron, Jim Thome, Boog Powell and of course, Tio Albert Pujols. It was only fitting that last season Pujols hit HR’s #699 and 700 at Dodger Stadium where the fans had come to really love the guy. Who will be remembered down the road as having spent a short time as a Dodger, but is forever in Dodger lore.

  1. Heck of a win last night!

Lets make it 2 in a row today!!!

AND that folks is why you DONT bunt with the gifted runner….

      1. whats wrong with Doc. Why didnt he just let the guy hit away. When can we get Dusty Baker or Joe Madden?

    1. Though it did not work Strategy wise the right decision.now make them work to be better sac bunters
      Best win of the season
      GO Dodgers!

  2. This was an incredible shock to wake up to today. Went to bed after top of the ninth. What, how, and WOW! Huge win!

    1. Small ball. When you don’t strikeout, sometimes you get lucky! Well except for JD. But that was a nasty pitch. Great base running by Will!

    2. I gave up on them as well at 7-3. Great win, glad for Gatorade, guy in cf no Belli, but a good ball player.

  3. Heck of a win. Blue Jays can sure put up some runs and will be a tough out in the AL.

Heard a crazy stat last night on MLB Network from Dan Plesac. Julio Urias has never thrown a pitch in the 8th inning or later in regular season. We all know he closed out the World Series but that was post season.

I have a hard time thinking Julio will be a Dodger next year. He needs some cardio conditioning in the offseason to slim down a little bit so he can go longer into games.

Nice to have an early game for us in the mid-west who have a hard time staying up and watching the games to completion.

    1. MLB.TV is a wonderful thing. If I cant stay awake I watch the rest in the morning before work. It wont show you the score and you can pick up where you left off.

      1. Thanks for the information, appreciate it. I usually watch on MLB Extra Innings but it’s nice to know.

        1. Anytime, its really great. MLB has nailed that. Only thing Id wish they change is they do show if a pitcher got a save when you first see the game box. I wish they would hide that piece….

          1. Why not go over the Page where all games are listed, live or Archived?
There is no spoiler, game Starts from the beginning and you can scroll to where you left.
            GO Dodgers!

          2. Nope, in the TV app at least it still show you if a game had a save…..

            Phone app may be different.,

  4. I use it with the laptop, no spoiler.
For me they leave out the between inning stuff on the archived gameGo Dodgers!

  5. Great win, and they needed it. Giants, Dirtbags, and the Padres all won. Sox and Rays discussing a deal for Lance Lynn who supposedly has agreed to waive his no trade to go to Tampa. Padre’s rebuffing offers for Hader and Snell. Kike will most likely start today’s game and will be uniform # 8. Deluca most likely to IL. If he was not hurt, I think Hernandez gets sent down. Trayce Thompson haters, last night at OKC Trayce was 3-5 with two doubles and a homer. Feduccia was 4-5 with double and a homer and two driven in. He is now hitting .297. OKC won 13-6. Knack pitched 4.1 innings giving up 6 runs, 5 earned. Washington got the win.

    1. Nice memories Old Bear, some of the characters you mention I met at a time in history, congratulations and keep writing these beautiful stories in the big leagues “to remember is to live”
Last night I went to bed when Fergie accepted the fourth race of the blue birds and I thought they would not get up, in the morning I review the results and my bad mood left me when I saw that they had won in extra innings, great victory, now to repeat the dose .

  6. Not bad for the rookie…

Outman is hitting .247 this season through 300 at-bats. He’s got 12 home runs, 43 RBI and 11 stolen bases in total – while posting a .768 OPS.

    1. Bellinger .314/14/45 12 steals. 22 walks 50 K’s. He has made 2 errors in center field and none at first base where he has played 17 games. 54 in the outfield. Outman: .247/12/43 11 steals 37 walks 115 K’s. He has one error in 90 games. Bellinger has greatly reduced his strikeouts. And right now he is on a tear. First Cub to hit over .400 in a month since the early 30’s.

  7. This Dodger team can score a lot of runs. This should be instructive for Roberts. This team is not out of many games. His pitchers should be kept on a little shorter leash when they are getting shelled.

Not too excited about having Kike back. I’d rather see the youngsters get the ABs and find out what they can do. If they don’t perform get Kike in to tune up for the playoffs.

    1. Not a huge fan of the trade. I liked both of the pitchers they sent to Boston. Robertson is huge, 6’6″. He was dominant in AAA and in my opinion just finding his footing in the majors. I watched Hagenman pitch a couple of times for OKC. He was nails down there. I don’t like to trade pitching talent like that for a retread infielder who has been lousy this season as an infielder, 15 errors, who even though he is hitting left-handed pitching to the tune of a .260 average, has more homers, 6-1 against RHP, and against left-handed starters, like he will be facing today, he is hitting only .188 . Not awe inspiring. Kike has had some very good moments in Dodger blue, but I have little confidence he is the right-handed hitting bat they need. I would have felt better if it was someone like Arenado. But that ain’t happening. Trayce Thompson played his first re-hab game at AAA last night. He went 3-5 with a homer, two doubles and a pair driven in.

      1. I’m also not exactly thrilled to get 2023 Kike back.

However, I’m wondering if this has to do with the rule 5 issues we all know are coming. I expect the Dodgers may still make some moves simply because they figure they will lose some players anyway.

      2. When were in the playoffs would you rather kiki Hernandez comes off the bench to pinch hit or yonny Hernandez or Barnes. That’s why they got kiki back he shines in the playoffs like Pederson does. And they could still get Arenado for six guys all in the minors that you get a gold glove third baseman that can hit for six minor league guys. Yep you do that trade and the cardinals know the dodgers have pitching and the cardinals know that the dodgers need a right-handed bat and a starter so will it be Arenado and Montgomery or Arenado and Flarethy for six prospects Busch stone pepiot cataya rivers Fallon all guys in the minors and you lose no players off your major league roster yep you do that trade.

        1. Check his career playoff stats. They are skewed by three really good series. Outside of his performance in the 17 NLCS against the Cubs, and his 2021 performance for the Red Sox in the ALDS and ALCS, he has not been all that great. Overall, he is a .269 hitter in the playoffs. His biggest hit in 2020 was a game tying homer in game 7 of the NLCS that set up Bellinger’s game winning blast. Kike is not a great pinch hitter. His BA as a pinch hitter in his career is .199. Yonny Hernandez has about as much chance of being on the Dodgers playoff roster as I do. None. Joc has been pretty good in the playoffs, but Kike actually has more homers, 13-12 and a higher BA. .269-.256. Joc seems to hit homers in higher leverage situations though. Kike’s best performance, his 3-homer game, came in a blowout win. Nothing we can do about Barnes. The pitchers love him and he is what he is. But doubt he would be the first choice in any pinch hitting role. Arenado is a possibility that is true, but right now, there is no evidence that trade will happen. Right now, they are discussing two pitchers with the White Sox, Lynn and Giolitto. There is also talk out there they are talking to the Sox about Joe Kelly too. My belief is that AF does not pull the trigger for a huge star like Arenado. He will chase pitching more than a bat.

    1. Bellinger more homers and RBI’s one more stolen base. Better batting average, OPS, slug, OPS+. And Belli has played 22 fewer games. Dead heat on defense as far as errors go. Bellinger has more range and seems to have better routes to the ball when he plays center. Outman has twice as many strikeouts as Bellinger. Outman has walked more. Bellinger is looking more like the 2017 version than he has in years.

  8. Thanks Bear. I guess Cody has the edge but seems like Dodgers did ok nonetheless with James . Seems like he will make a pretty decent outfielder.

    1. Cody is a better player period. He is a far superior defender, always has been. Outman is good, and he makes some very good plays. But he is still learning, and he still strikes out way too much. People forget, Bellinger is only 2 years older than Outman. Cody keeps this up, he is going to get a very good long-term contract this winter. He is also a candidate to be traded at the deadline with the Yankees and the Astros both needing outfield help. Astros have one big lefty hitter, Alvarez. Their lineup is right-handed heavy.

      1. Yankees or Astros, let’s see now, I wonder where Cody would rather go?
The team has dad played for or the team that cheated him out of a World Series ring?

Cody was one of the loudest and most often quoted after that mess. Maybe he’s told his agent to let the Astros know he doesn’t want any part of them and he’s going to punch out Bregman and Altuve if they trade for him. That should make them think twice about trading for him.

        1. From your lips to God’s ears…..

But I don’t see this happening. We need arms much more than bats.

      2. Rumor Giants trying to get belli and Stroman can see that with there GM am manager being affiliated with dodgers and they go get belli watch.

  9. Does anyone have or know where to find a list of all the potential Dodgers players who are going to be exposed in the next Rule 5 draft?

  10. Yup, Cody is special, probably an elite talent.
He was fun to watch in Dodger Blue at the beginning. Wish him well wherever he goes except if it’s with Astros. And likewise for Outman. Let’s get a win today boys. Do something special today Kiki.

  11. My friend Kike is disappointed with the lack of love from the LADT readership (especially you Bear). He loves Mark tho, and says Cassidy has good taste.

He says he’s gonna prove you all wrong and help the team win another Ring.

He also agrees with me that we should trade for Blake Snell quickly.
See what I did there DodgerRam!!

    1. Ha, I just quoted the stats which show he has not been all that great against left-handed starting pitchers, like they are facing today. As a matter of fact, Kike’s stats took a huge dive last season when he hit .222. Down from the .250 his first season in Boston, and he only played in 93 games. He hit .240 in his Dodger career and .234 his three years in Boston. More telling is his .737 OPS in LA and .690 in Boston. His OPS+ in both places is under 100. While his career splits against LHP are decent, his last two years, not so much. He is nothing special. He is a mediocre hitter, who at this point plays better defense in the outfield than the infield, 15 errors this year, 14 of those as a SS. The stats do not lie. Sorry. To tell the truth, although I have always liked his passion and love of the game, and the enthusiasm he brings, I have always thought he tries to hit homers too much and he is not that great of a player. I really do not care if he is disappointed at all.

      1. Maybe the Dodgers analytics/coaches told AF they could “fix” Hernandez’s problems now.

But that’s the ONLY way this trade makes sense!

  13. DODGERS PRESS RELEASE

DODGERS ACTIVATE KIKÉ HERNÁNDEZ & RECALL TYSON MILLER

LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Dodgers activated infielder/outfielder Kiké Hernández, recalled right-handed pitcher Tyson Miller, optioned left-handed pitcher Justin Bruihl and placed outfielder Jonny DeLuca on the injured list with a right hamstring strain.

Hernández, 31, joins the Dodgers after spending the last three seasons with Boston. The Puerto Rican native batted .222 (66-for-297) with 11 doubles, six homers and 31 RBI in 76 games with the Red Sox. With Boston, he slashed .234/.308/.382 with 32 homers and 136 RBI. Prior to joining Boston, he spent six seasons with the Dodgers, hitting .240 (400-for-1670) with 68 homers and 213 RBI in 648 games. He was originally drafted by the Houston Astros in the sixth round of the 2009 First Year Player Draft out of the American Military Academy out of Toa Baja, Puerto Rico.

Miller, 27, was acquired from Milwaukee on July 12 via trade and has made two appearances for Triple-A Oklahoma City, going 0-0 with five strikeouts in 3.0 innings. He posted a 5.79 ERA (6 ER/9.1 IP) and seven strikeouts with Milwaukee this season and has been in the Majors parts of three seasons with Chicago (2020), Texas (2022) and Milwaukee (2023), posting a 1-2 mark with a 7.92 ERA (22 ER/25.0 IP) and 15 strikeouts against 14 walks. In his minor league career, he has appeared in 154 games (100 starts), recording a 4.02 ERA (265 ER/592.2 IP) and 576 strikeouts against 198 walks. He was originally drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the fourth round of the 2016 First Year Player Draft out of California Baptist University.

Bruihl, 26, pitched last night, allowing three runs in 1.0 inning of work. On the season, he is 1-0 with a 4.07 ERA (11 ER/24.1 IP) and 19 strikeouts in 20 games for the Dodgers. He has been with the Dodgers parts of three seasons and he is 2-2 with a 3.65 ERA (27 ER/66.2 IP) and 43 strikeouts while limiting left-handed hitters to a .181 (21-for-116) batting average with 22 strikeouts in 65 games (two starts). The southpaw was originally signed as non-drafted free agent on July 15, 2017 after finishing his collegiate career at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.

DeLuca, 25, left the game last night in eighth inning after going 0-for-2 in the contest. He has appeared in 24 games for the Dodgers, hitting .262 (11-for-42) with one double, two homers and six RBI. With Triple-A Oklahoma City, he hit .315 (23-for-73) with three doubles, one triple, four homers and 19 RBI in 17 games. He began the season with Double-A Tulsa, hitting .279 (34-for-122) with 10 homers and 18 RBI. The Southern California native was originally drafted by the Dodgers in the 25th round of the 2019 First Year Player Draft out of the University of Oregon.

    1. Owners generally love the guy. He does whatever they tell him.

Whenever he does retire I’m sure he will take a position as “special advisor” for the Astros owner.

    1. I would love nothing more than for you to be right. Always loved Kike. If he is reading this, I hope the doubts motivate him. If he has a good couple months he will be a Dodger legend, once again.

  15. Does Jessica Mendoza get paid by the word? If so she has to be a billionaire! Might switch over to bluejays broadcast!

      1. I remember a few years back, before you could talk about betting, she mentioned how the guys were doing ‘fantasy football’ and then she was out of the booth for the next few innings. Orel had to say ‘of course it is just for fun and no one was really betting money’.

  16. Anybody who doesn’t think we need AT LEAST ONE MORE SOLID SP has a lot more faith in our present guys than I do.

    Kershaw….if healthy, I believe
Urias….not consistent this year, which one shows up?
Gonsolin…..not consistent this year, and probably close to breaking down
Miller…..playoff pressure probably too much, best chance of all the kids
Grove, Sheehan, Stone…….not your time yet
    Thor…..are you really asking me?

    1. When you mention Kershaw and if healthy you believe: are you referring to the rest of the regular season, or the postseason?

Because I also “believe” thru Sept 30. After Sept 30? I cringe.

      1. Seriously??? See 2017 2020 World Series….he was pretty darn good.

Get out here with that stuff….

        1. I’d say go look at his postseason stats vs his regular season stats, and then come back with a more intelligent response.

          1. Sorry Bobby….I can’t bond with you on this one…like the brother above who responded to you, I’m with him. Clayton has gotten a bum wrap for a few tough playoff games and as I recall one or two of them were against the cheaters who knew in advance what to look for.

          2. Kersh is no Koufax in the postseason, that is true. But through all his playoff games up until 2016 he was 4-7. And his ERA was very high. Since 2017 he is 9-5 in post season play and his ERA has shrunk over a run. His only really bad performance came against Boston in 2018. He gave up 9 earned runs in 2 games . The bullpen blew his second start in Houston in the 17 series. But we all know what happened there.

  17. September 16, 1963, a guy named Dick Nen got called up to the Dodgers just in time for the third game of a HUGE series in St. Louis. The Dodgers went into St. Louis and won the first two games. In the third game, the Dodgers were losing to the great Bob Gibson. Nen came to bat, and hit a home run to tie the game 5-5. Dodgers went on to win the game, in their way to a sweep of the Yankees. This HR was one of the biggest home runs in Dodger history. Nen stayed for the rest of the year, however, he never got another hit. He did go on to play for the Washington Senators, and I think he was part of the package, along with Frank Howard, Pete Richert, and Phil Ortega who were traded for Claude O’Steen, John Kennedy and Bob Miller. Harry Caray, the Cardinals broadcaster: “It might be, it could be, my God, it is a home run!” Dick Nen, Jr. had a very good career as a reliever.
Kike will help. Plays well in the post season. Fans love him. Still, I’d take CT3. Gonsolin is not right. Vesia a liability. Go Dodgers!

    1. That homer was Nen’s only hit that year. It indeed did help the Dodgers sweep a series from the Cardinals. They were one game up when they went into St. Louis and 4 up when they left. That game was played on the 18th of September. It was a Wednesday, and they won the game in the 13th inning. Perranoski got the win, Lou Burdette got the loss. Nen was indeed a part of the big trade with the Senators. But he was the player to be named later. He was sent on the 15th of December, 11 days after the original trade. His son, Robb Nen pitched 10 years in the majors and saved 314 games.

      1. Thanks for clarifying things, Bear. That series was pressure to the max. Didn’t Johnny Podres pick up the win in the first game of the series? Podres was one of the most clutch pitchers in Dodger history.

  18. May is gone, and Urias and Gonsolin are sub-par pitchers this season. At this point it, whatever moves AF makes by the trade deadline could never fix the Dodgers SP problems. That’s the cold hard reality.

    1. Whatever AF does, he must find a way to improve the offensive prowess of the bottom order, so maybe the Dodgers could consistently win high-scoring games in the playoffs. Basically, last season’s “playoff Phillies” is the formula the Dodgers must emulate to reach the WS and win it all.

  19. Gonsolin and Urias are pitching like dog SHIT! Both better step it up especially Urias going into free agency and a big contract. Both of their velocities are down from last year. At this point I Would NOT sign Urias to a long term contract. His better days are behind him. Let the Mess and Midgets have him.

      1. I think you may be right.

I think we both are thinking Gonsolin will be out due to injury.

      1. I never eat crow, and when I am wrong I admit it. I do not see the need for this trade, much like I did not see them needing Kike. He is a bad version of Chris Taylor. He has been horrible at SS this year, so maybe the plan is to play Kike in the outfield or at 2nd and not at SS at all. What it seems to mean to me is that Vargas has about as much chance as me coming up again. He might, but I just think the roster is close to being full. What I think the Rosario trade means is that Rojas is back to being a backup. It also means Yonny Hernandez is on his way to AAA.

  20. Bradley called Ahmed Rosario so I must give him props for that one.

Now, let’s keep it going and get Bradley Arrenado and Lucas Giolito as well!

      1. Exactly. I will say this one came out of nowhere. There wasn’t any buzz whatsoever. Thor was probably not going to pitch for the Dodgers again. It also probably means Kershaw’s bullpen was very good and he is close to returning.

        1. The Dodgers have struck out with May, Gonso, and Urias this year – basically 3 of the 4 SP’s they penciled in for this season’s playoffs. It’s alarming how desperate they’ve become for SP’s.

          1. Injury’s can eff up a season pretty quickly. But being this active in the trade market this much before the deadline tells me AF has more moves in mind, and pitching will be at the forefront. Ohtani pulled off of the market by the Angels.

  22. Rosario is hitting about .265 right now mostly due to a frigid start. But since the first of June, he is hitting around .301. The trade is pending medicals. Reports now coming in that Syndergaard is going to the Guardians as the player in the trade

  23. I don’t see that Hernandez or Rosario represent much in the way of an upgrade over currently underperforming utility players. At least Rosario is an actual SS, but his OPS is .675. Rojas is .547, Taylor is .733, Hernandez is .603. Gee – they have a whole bunch of utility players who can’t hit. The Dodgers can start all 4 of them with Barnes (OPS .325(!)) and have a lineup that will be lucky to score a run.

I guess “aggressive” is in the eye of the beholder.

    1. Kike has sucked at SS but has played well in centerfield. I doubt they even consider him to play SS at all. Rosario has hit better since June. He is no power threat, but he has great speed. Syndergaard heading to Cleveland in the deal.

  24. According to MLB Trade Rumors, “That hasn’t been the case on the other side of the ball. Rosario’s defensive ratings have cratered this year. Both Defensive Runs Saved and Statcast have rated him as the worst defensive shortstop in the majors, pegging him somewhere between 12 and 15 runs below average. He has committed the sixth-most errors (11) at the position.”

    So there’s that.

    1. Yes, and Kike has 14. So the Dodgers have two of the worst fielding short stops in the league. One plus for Rosario, he is second to Freddie Freeman with the most 3 hit games. 41.

  25. Low key thing. Rosario makes much less than Syndergaard, with the cash sent by Boston. I wonder if the Dodgers are making a low key run at getting under the threshold.

    1. Er, maybe not as this is now being reported:
Money will go to Guardians with Noah. Guardians aren’t releasing Noah

      1. The deal is cash neutral, a source said. So the Dodgers are just sending the difference in the remaining salaries between Syndergaard and Rosario.

        Roughly 1.88 million.

  26. Rosario having a meh season with his bat and glove. But if he’s willing to make changes, tap into the Dodgers coaches, then he’ll definitely make this team better at SS. The upside is still there, it’s up to him.

    1. Maybe the plan is to work on his launch angle and become a HR Hitter?

Well, maybe there is a plan.

The fact remains that he is a bad defensive SS.

  27. So far AF hasn’t moved the October needle one bit. And I was so looking forward to see how Syndegaard was going to do at Tulsa.

    1. I tremble at the thought of Syndegaard making the Dodgers regret this trade.

Still 5 more days to move that needle, fingers crossed.

  28. From Jack Harris:

FWIW, part of the reason the Dodgers had been holding on to Syndergaard was because they wanted to see if he could be part of a trade

Seemed unlikely, but doing so helped them land Rosario –– even when it was pretty clear Syndergaard wasn’t gonna pitch for the Dodgers again

  29. Also from TradeRumors:
“Rosario has an excellent .304/.346/.475 slash in 463 plate appearances against left-handed pitching dating back to the start of 2021. ”
So I guess we’ll be seeing more platoons and more veterans on the field. And perhaps less of Mookie at 2B.
Still not sure if Rosario is a done deal….
These deals just work around the edges when the core need is starting pitching. Right now, Bobby Miller might be the most reliable arm in the rotation, though we expect Kershaw back. No telling what we’ll get from Urias and Gonsolin. Not a good situation.
What other moves are in the works? Will the names Busch and Vargas be involved?

    1. Too bad that DeLuca got hurt, but I think his strained hamstring helped the Dodges win that thriller yesterday.
When DeLuca went down, Roberts put Yonny at 2B and moved Mookie out to RF. Then Mookie makes the throw and Smith makes the great tag to get Kiermeyer at the plate.
I don’t know why so many players aren’t sliding feet first at the plate these days, but going wide to use their hand. But I appreciated Kiermeyer’s help.
DeLuca must be wondering if Kike’s arrival means he’ll be sent back to OKC…

  30. A bag of peanuts in return for Syndergaard is a good enough deal for me.

  31. New lineup vs lefties:

    Mookie RF
    Freddie 1B
    Will C
    JDM DH
    Rosario SS
    Taylor LF
    Max 3B
    Kike 2B
    Outman CF
    Bench: Rojas, Heyward, Peralta, Barnes

Or something like that…. Rojas is a late defensive replacement. Heyward and Peralta sub based on the relief pithers, with Mookie possibly shifting to 2B.

      1. That will change before 3 PM eastern time on Tuesday. I believe they will get at least one if not two starting pitchers. Both might be coming from the White Sox. AF is being aggressive.

        1. A relief to hear Ohtani off the market. Less problems for AF. Not discounting the need for SP’s, but hopefully the Dodgers can magically swing a deal for a big RH bat.

    1. Oh my…. Verrry intersting.
      Maybe.
A blockbuster for Arenado and Jordan Montgomery would be a lot of fun. Perhaps they can throw in Jordan Hicks too.

  32. Seriously, patience in order, AF just getting started, more shoes to drop later, hold off on the judgements.

  33. On second thought, let’s flip Outman and Max.
Outman is now batting over ,300 against lefties, toward a .761 OPS. His average against righties is lower, but he has more power. No need for a platoon with Outman.
Max’s splits are pretty wide: .885 vs righties, .612 vs lefties.

  34. Stroman and Lynn pitched against each other tonight.

Either team would have been better off starting Syndergaard.
Stroman has been horrific in his last two starts and Lynn with the exception of two very high strikeout games has been horrible for the past month.
