A Great Night at the Ravine

We arrived at Dodger Stadium at 4:30 for the 7:10 game. Jon Weisman, who is the Dodgers VP of Communications and someone I have known for twenty-plus years, left me a Media Credential which is a “Get out of Jail Free Card” – it takes you anywhere in the stadium. My wife, son, and son-in-law accompanied me, but they did not have the Media Credential. So, they dropped me off and I strolled into the stadium, which at 4:30 is pretty deserted. I passed Joe Davis and Nomar on the escalator and bumped into Jon Weisman at the bottom. He told me that Andrew would like to do the interview in the Dodgers Dugout at 5:20 and that I had five minutes – for the record, I took 10! šŸ˜‰ Afterward, we went to the Stadium Club and prowled the Dodger Memories area outside the Pressbox.

Of course, I have been in the Pressbox many times, but my son was too young at the time to accompany me. I asked Security if I could take him in (my Credentials get me in), and they gave him a temporary credential. I then gave him a tour of the Pressbox.

Of course, the Dodgers won and are now 7-0. It was a great game, and my wife bought out the Dodger Store with Dodger Gear for all the Grandkids and even a Dodger Jacket for my Red Sox-loving meathead Son-in-Law, who was visibly impressed by Dodger Stadium.

It may be next week until we get the interview edited, as we are leaving for the cruise tomorrow. I think it was epic. I asked some hard questions and he gave some unexpected answers. I first met Jon Weisman about 20 years ago when he and I both had Dodger Blogs. I went on to do other things, and he went to Showtime and Vanity Fair, but he is now back with the Dodgers. I am glad he is. It was a first-class experience. After it was over, Jon came over and met the family. Overall, this was an amazing night.

  1. EPIC…

I’ve been in that press box too….via the Stadium tour, which is awesome BTW.

You saw a great game, lets do it again tonight!

  2. Rushing was pulled from the game after one at bat. He was pulled because of the concussion protocol.

  3. “The Los Angeles Dodgers are acquiring outfielder Esteury Ruiz from the Athletics, per ESPN’s Alden Gonzalez.
The young outfielder was designated for assignment by the A’s this week, and now winds up in Los Angeles, a team looking for outfield depth.Ruiz stole an American-League-best 67 bases in 2023. While he’s struggled to hit at the MLB level — with a career OPS of .641 — you can’t teach speed, and the Dodgers are taking a chance on the 26-year-old outfielder.According to Gonzalez, Ruiz will head to Triple-A”.A corresponding 40-man move will be required but that could be done fairly easily by transferring Kyle Hurt to the 60-day injured list. Hurt required Tommy John surgery in July and won’t be an option until later in the season.

    1. The Dodgers are trading right-handed pitcher Carlos Duran to the A’s for Ruiz.IMO that’s a lot to give up.

      1. Ruiz is not a great hitter, and he is a below average defender. Duran had little chance to crack this staff. But Ruiz is far from being the answer in CF. His DRS is -20. And although he is a speedy runner, you have to get on base first. He is just not that good of a hitter, and he has no power whatsoever. They have played 8 games. It is way to early to push the panic button on a player. Max is hitting under .100, but he hit the game tying double last night, after he ditched the torpedo bat and went back to his normal bat.

  4. From BA:

    Emil Morales, SS, Dodgers
Morales was one of the toasts of the 2024 Dominican Summer League, and on the backfields this spring, he’s looked like a prime breakout candidate. There’s little question about the offensive force Morales can one day become, but he’s increased his chances to stick at shortstop, as well. So far, he’s shown strong instincts and quickness and decent enough range to give himself a longer leash at the position. If he can keep his growing body lean and lithe, he might defy the odds. If not, his offense, which should produce power and hittability in equal measure, will easily allow him to profile at the hot corner. Scouts also have raved about the leadership traits Morales has shown on the field during his first action stateside.

  5. Enjoy your cruise Mark. Wouldn’t it be nice if the Dodgers are still undefeated when you get back?

  6. The Dodgers are creating a 400 meter relay team in their minor league system. It’s labeled speed and whiff team.

It feels good hearing what a meaningful and fun day you had at the game Mark.

Meanwhile, San Diego is also undefeated at 6-0 (0.5 GB), the Giants are 4-1 (2.0 GB), and Arizona is 3-2 (3.0 GB).

    1. Nothing new, it was the best division is baseball last year and its the best division in baseball this year

  7. Esteury Ruiz is known for his speed and offensive abilities, but his defensive performance in center field is not consistently strong, with some sources indicating he’s at least an average defender with a below-average arm.

    1. Outman moves even further down the depth chart if that’s possible.

  8. James Outman and Miguel Vargas might start their own AAAA League.

Right about now, both are beyond pathetic!

  10. Glad you had a great time Mark. Definitely something many will never get to experience.

You really going to make us wait until you return from your cruise (tongue in cheek)?

Have a great time, enjoy your family and have a safe trip! Some of us will be waiting to hear, with much anticipation, the contents of your discussion with AF.

  11. News from Internet:

I particularly was surprised to read this:

ā€œThe Dodgers have placed more players on opening day squads than any other organization, something that’s been true for the past few years.ā€

    Per Alex Freedman:

Good news: Dalton Rushing is good to go after having to leave last night’s game when he took a foul ball off the catcher’s mask. He’ll sit today but will be back in the lineup tomorrow.

    For the Dodgers:
    2026 Odds

    65% Josue De Paula, OF
    25% Dalton Rushing, C/OF
    5% Alex Freeland, SS
    5% Jackson Ferris, LHP

    Ferris did for pitchers.

    Plus this note:
I’ve spent a lot of time on the Dodgers’ complex this spring (for reasons you’ll soon read), and Dalton Rushing has continued to look like an All-Star catcher who does everything well….

    40. Dodgers — Matt Scott, RHP, Stanford

Rationale: Can the Dodgers fix Matt Scott? The stuff is in there, but the results haven’t been….

    ben Clemens Chat:

Ben Clemens FanGraphs Chat – 3/31/25
diadem: What is the outlook for Hye Seong Kim? Utility IF? Full time 2b pushing Edman to the OF? Flat out bust?

Ben Clemens: I’ve got utility infielder as most likely outcome with wide error bars

Pat: Watched most of Detroit vs LAD this weekend. Didn’t feel like Detroit played poorly, but, the Ohtani/Betts/Freeman/Teoscar meat grinder is so tough, then you have Edman/Smith/Muncy, etc..one mistake & it’s a HR.If they stay healthy, I feel 110+ wins in likely.

Ben Clemens: Yeah, oh my goodness the Dodgers are good… I mean, they were hitting well too. I think that when the Dodgers are all on, they’re hard to beat

Logan: How much (if at all) does the ā€œtrading awayā€ team impact how you view statistical and/or skill breakouts of a traded player (e.g. Gavin Lux)? In other words, to use Lux as an example, does the fact that it was the Dodgers selling him impact your confidence in his second half surge?

Ben Clemens: it does, but, in a particular way. I’m never that surprised to see the Dodgers trading away solid major league contributors because they have a lot of very good players already

Mr. Burrito: FWIW I’m writing this with a torpedo keyboard… Here’s my question: The Dodgers have placed more players on opening day squads than any other organization, something that’s been true for the past few years. This is true even though the Dodgers have drafted super low for a super long time. How has that happened? And why aren’t the Dodgers given credit in the form of less crap-talk about them being over-spenders or, literally, in the form of comp picks that eventually will help the orgs that are less well run?

Ben Clemens: I don’t think that story is very exciting… I have a very good friend who’s a big baseball fan, texting me updates about how Dylan Crews looks multiple times a game as serious Nats and DC sports fan, knows his stuff and the salary cap less aspect of baseball breaks his brain. like, he just wants to talk about competitive imbalance and how the Dodgers are an abomination no matter how clear the evidence is that baseball parity is alive and well, but if you spend money like that, it really doesn’t matter the other stuff you do, a sizeable proportion of fans only see the money

  12. Very cool….
Did AF tip you off on the Ruiz deal?
I certainly expect AF to play his cards close to his vest, but wouldn’t it be fascinating to know what his trade scenarios look like compared to ours.

As far as Ruiz goes, I’m wondering about the quality of his defense. He’d be great if he could steal first base. His OBP is .290.
The big winner in this deal was Carlos Duran. He’s suddenly a lot closer to the majors now.

  13. muncy? if he continues this type of play? kike needs to be at 3rd and max at first while freddie is out! totally unacceptable defense!

    1. Kike might be a defensive upgrade for a while, but he isn’t hitting either. Max had a bad game, but he wasn’t the only one. He had the same problem, early errors last year and the year before. He settled down both times and was more than adequate. Eight games is not enough to judge what he will do this year. Kike has NEVER flourished in a starting role, NEVER. Dodgers gave him chances a couple of times.

  14. I think the only Dodger weakness is defense. Like many I am not crazy about Mookie at short. Conforto in left field, OK, but I expect to see him subbed-out in the late innings of a playoff game for CT3.

Muncy and Pages are liabilities. Max could easily have 4 error if not for Tommy E picking Max’s throws out the dirt. That said, we tolerate Max bc he can hit, but can he?

Pages is simply not a high-IQ ball player. He makes base running gaffs, does not take good routes on fly balls, and seems to have zero ability to jump at the wall and steal an HR. He’s a project, but will interestign to see how much leash Mgt gives him.

      1. As a centerfielder, yes. But judging his offense after just 8 games, not a huge track record to go by.

    1. They did not make a single error in their first six games. Three of the four errors they have made have been on throws. They are getting to the balls and making the plays. The other error was on Edman last night when he missed that pick-off throw. Seems we had the same complaints about Pages as we did with Puig. Difference is Puig could hit. Fans griping 8 games into the season. You guys are going to lose your minds when they lose their first game.

  15. 1. Muncy had a bad game, but made up for it.
    2. Pages is young.
    3. Betts… well he is Mookie.
    4. Edman is a ballplayer.
    5. You can play the blame game… but I just say “the Dodgers are 8-0. Nuff said!

      1. He has changed his swing. Ya got to hit it first. Davis was saying that Pages during batting practice is trying to shoot the ball the other way. His natural swing is that of a RH pull hitter with power. But taking all that practice and then trying to change in game, is not working for him.

  16. Tony Gonsolin, Evan Phillips Scheduled for Thursday Rehab Game

“Los Angeles Dodgers pitchers Tony Gonsolin and Evan Phillips are scheduled to pitch in rehab appearances today at Triple-A Oklahoma City, per Alex Freedman, the broadcaster for the OKC Comets. Gonsolin will get the start and pitch two innings, while Phillips will come in from the bullpen. It is unclear how many outings each will need before they rejoin the major league roster”.

  17. Sloppy game overall but nice come from behind win. Umpire was squeezing Snell on a lot of close pitches. We won’t be facing Wheeler of the Phillies this weekend. Let’s see how Sasaki handles the hostile Phillie fans on Saturday.

  18. Muncy’s D is terrible but knocks in two to tie it. Had tears over Saski start. A little AA/AAA and he will be fine because his stuff is electric and he wants it so bad. Last night’s Umps proved we need ABS now.
This team is so good that we bitch about them and they’re 8-0! Over 60 years of watching Dodgers baseball and it never gets old. This is probably the best team ever.

  19. I am sure there is a good reason why the Dodgers chose the outfield as Rushing’s secondary position, but wouldn’t it have been perfect if he could play second base? Then he and Smith could have split time behind the plate and at second base saving Will from his annual second half digression. Could Rushing just not handle the infield well?

    1. They have Rushing playing 1B and C this year. Barnes will be gone next year, or he could get injured. Rushing ius a luxury most teams do not have at C.

You are going to see hot streaks and cold streaks. You are going to say, “Bench Pages and Muncy, only to see them get smoking hot.” It happens like this EVERY year.

A walk off on your Bobblehead Night? Who scripted that?

  20. Oklahoma City Comets — 9 El Paso Chihuahuas — 4

“Game Summary: A nine-run fourth inning propelled the Oklahoma City Comets to a 9-4 win against the El Paso Chihuahuas Wednesday night at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark as well as a fourth straight win overall. Oklahoma City (4-1) trailed, 2-0, before nine straight Comets batters reached base to start the fourth inning and went on to score nine runs in the inning. The inning included a two-run double to the wall in center field by Austin Gauthier, a two-run single by Eddie Rosario, a two-run triple by Michael Chavis and a RBI double by Ryan Ward. Two other runs scored in the inning on a wild pitch and a RBI groundout. Two of the four runs scored by El Paso (2-3) came via solo home runs by Oscar Gonzalez in the fourth and sixth innings”.

    1. Always happy to see contributions from Gauthier and Ward. I hope these guys get dealt to a small market team that gives them a better chance at The Show.

  21. i understand kike isn’t an every day player. i think he’s better off at 3rd with freddie out. kike will make millions over his career being a useful backup and a standout in the playoffs. he’s just plain better than max defensively. freddie saves max a few errors a season. But right now,3rd and center are struggling.

    1. Pages has 30 plate appearances with two singles, one double & three walks.

I have not seen him hit a ball hard yet.

      Something has to give.

      1. Pages has to go back to pulling the ball, that’s where his power is rather than trying to go right field where it isn’t.

  22. I’m not a fan of throwing the crap against the wall. But I try to put myself in AF’s shoes….yah right! So here goes. Ruiz along with Pages and a couple young arms could be traded to the White Sox. I’ve been pining for Robert Jr. for a long time. Scoop him up before the price gets too high.
    Book em

  23. Looking forward to the AF interview! (I trust he’ll give LADT full credit for tipping him to his best deals.)

Meanwhile, today’s big Dodgers news is that Freddie is going on the IL with a sprained ankle.
So how will the Dodgers cover 1B? Who might be summoned from OKC?
My first thought was that it would be cool to see Dalton Rushing in LA. He has a lot of 1B experience, and with Will Smith entrenched at C, Rushing could well become Freddie’s successor. (That could be sooner than we all hope, if this latest injury is another sign that Freddie’s once-sturdy body is starting to break down.)
My second thought: Is spring-training MVP David Bote still available? I seem him listed on the “restricted list” on the OKC roster, whatever that means. TrueBlueLA describes this as “roster limbo.” As I understand it–and I could definitely be wrong–Bote’s veteran status enables him to seek a major league gig. He’s 31 years old, and the Dodgers love veterans more than excitable prospects, so perhaps Bote could come up, assuming he is still available. He would have to be added to the 40-man roster.
So yeah…. I think it will be Bote.
My third and fourth thoughts include Alex Freeland and Hyeseong Kim– but I think the Dodgers would prefer them to keep playing every day in OKC.
Bote can play 1B, 2B or 3B. Given Max’s recent adventures at 3B, perhaps Max would slide back to 1B until Freddie returns.

    1. I’m thinking they might like to replace Freddie with another lefty bat, so that would mean Rushing, Feduccia or Rosario. Of those three, only Rushing has any real experience at first base.

Since it’s hopefully just going to be for 2 series, I think my choice would be Feduccia, even if only to be a pinch hit lefty bat off the bench. And, at least he’s already on the 40-man roster.

  24. Oklahoma City Comets — 6

    El Paso Chihuahuas — 5

    (11 innings)

Thursday, April 3, 2025 – Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark – Oklahoma City, Okla.

“Game Summary: James Outman connected on a RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the 11th inning to send the Oklahoma City Comets to a 6-5 walk-off win against the El Paso Chihuahuas Thursday night at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark. With the score tied, 5-5, and runners at first and second base in the 11th inning, Outman hit a grounder into right field that allowed Hyeseong Kim to score the game-winning run. Oklahoma City (5-1) battled back from multiple deficits throughout the game. El Paso (2-4) built a 3-1 lead early before the Comets scored two runs in the sixth inning to tie the score, 3-3, on a RBI single by Ryan Ward who went on to finish with a game-high four hits. Oklahoma City trailed, 4-3, before a sacrifice fly by Ward knotted the score, 4-4, in the eighth inning. After the Chihuahuas took the lead in the 10th inning, another RBI single by Ward in the bottom of the inning tied the score, 5-5, to send the game to the 11th inning”.

“Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Tony Gonsolin opened a Major League Rehab Assignment and tossed 1.2 scoreless innings, allowing one hit and two walks with one strikeout. He faced eight batters and threw 35 pitches (17 strikes)…Gonsolin made two appearances with the Dodgers in Spring Training before being placed on the 15-day Injured List March 17 with back tightness.

-Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Evan Phillips also opened a Major League Rehab Assignment, facing five batters in the fourth inning and allowing one run on one hit with one walk and one strikeout. He threw 24 pitches (14 strikes). Phillips was placed on the Dodgers Injured List March 17 with a right rotator cuff strain.

-Pitcher Landon Knack made his first appearance of the season for OKC, entering the game in the fifth inning and allowing two runs and five hits over 4.2 innings with two walks and five strikeouts”.

    1. Chihuahuas……. Who names their team after a bunch of yappy ankle biters? On another note….. there are a lot of Chihuahuas here in Panama where I have relocated to. Surf’s up and the water is warm. VPN works great & mlbtv reception is seamless.

  25. The Dodgers recalled Feduccia from Triple-A Oklahoma City on Friday, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports.
He’s taking the roster spot vacated by Freddie Freeman (ankle), who was placed on the 10-day injured list. Feduccia will operate as a third catcher for the Dodgers.

Samuel Sanchez, RHP — Rancho Cucamonga (Single-A)
Jose Rodriguez, RHP — Tulsa (Double-A)
Jared Karros, RHP — Tulsa (Double-A)

    1. Rancho Cucamonga has a lot of interesting young talent.
Probably the next stop for Emil Morales and Ching Hsien Ko, after the “extended spring training.”

  29. @DodgersBeat
Shohei Ohtani was asked about Torpedo bats by the Japanese media
“I don’t think I’d suddenly start using it. I wouldn’t completely rule out the possibility, but I’m very satisfied with my current bat, and I feel like I’m getting the right feel from it. So, for now, I think I’ll stick with the bat I’m using.”

  30. Bad defense and base running tonight. Pages is a bad bad base runner.

    Congrats on the interview Mark

  31. Congrats to Hunter Feduccia, though he was not my first-through-fifth choice. But Rushing should get more reps behind the plate.
Can Feduccia play 1B at all? I’m guessing he’ll get some starts at catcher to provide a lefty bat. Looks like Kike will play 1B until Freddie’s return.
I was hoping for a few more historic wins before the streak ended, but at least Edman made it interesting in the 9th. (Edman for MVP!) Sadly fitting that it would end with the 26th player, Taylor, caught stealing by Realmuto. (Where is Estuery Ruiz when you need him?)
    The Phillies are very strong.
For the last couple of seasons I was hoping the Dodgers would deal for Luzardo, but the Phils prevailed. The “Jesus Lizard,” as the Pitching Ninja calls him, outpitched Yamamoto and makes the Phillies’ rotation as strong as any in the game. The Dodgers may have more depth, but the Phils front four may be better–with or without Shohei. And their offense is formidable.

  32. yamamoto six innings 1 run? i’ll take that all day! yates was not ā€œyatesā€ like ! And Max whiffed again. Kike 3 whiffs. And chris taylor has been relegated to a pinch runner ! No time to panic, but maybe Bote would make more sense on the bench than say Taylor? Just asking?

  33. Friday scores
Oklahoma City 11, El Paso 6
    NW Arkansas 12, Tulsa 11
Lake County 8, Great Lakes 1
Rancho Cucamonga 16, Lake Elsinore 9

4:05 p.m.: Oklahoma City (Noah Davis) vs. El Paso (Stephen Kolek)
5 p.m.: Tulsa (Jared Karros) vs. NW Arkansas (Ethan Bosacker)
6:30 p.m.: Rancho Cucamonga (Aidan Foeller) vs. Lake Elsinore (Bryan Balzer)

  34. Feduccia can play 1B, and I imagine this is a “showcase” to increase his trade value. Catchers are always in demand.

    1. Probably

Or they’re just throwing him a bone

      How’s the food?

Wife wants to go on a Portuguese river cruise

  35. All streaks must end sooner or later, let’s face it, Luzardo pitched a gem. Yamamoto did not pitch badly; his own throw was his downfall. Yates not effective for the first time, plus some shoddy baserunning by the boys. Sasaki gets the start today at 1:05 PST, 2:05 my time. Today is my granddaughters 29th birthday. And we got snow today here in Canon City.

It’s time for Sasaki to step up and pitch more than 2 or 3 innings.A real test for him with hostile Philly fans.

  37. It’s time that the bottom of order starts producing:
    Muncy .115BA .399 OPS
    Kiki .091BA .451OPS
    Pages .111BA .421OPS

  38. David Vassegh

Shohei Ohtani continuing his throwing program in Philadelphia. #Dodgers

  39. RHP prospect Brooks Auger in his professional debut:

    5.2 IP – 1 BB – 3 K – 73 P / 49 S

Auger, a 6th rounder in last year’s draft, went straight to High-A for his first game action.

    1. Agree with you. They will both reach AA this year. Maybe we’re just letting them build some confidence heading in.

2027 is on the table for MLB debuts.

  40. Give Kim a shot, won’t hurt. Wish they would have given a shot to Feduccia a today with a right hander going for the Phils.

  41. Well done Mark. I’m glad you got the opportunity to do it again. But getting to sit down with AF! That’s something. I’m looking forward to seeing the video.

Maybe you can help me out. I’d like to have a sit down with Frank MCourt. In one of his parking lots. At midnight. Maybe you can set that up for me. šŸ˜‰

  42. Muncy has 3 hits today, so far. I heard he got a shipment of those new torpedo bats. None of those hits came off one of them. Apparently you just have to have a couple in your locker for them to do their magic.

    2. Payton Martin looks to bounce back after being considered one of our most promising arms then backsliding a bit.

I had company last night and we dusted a couple bottles of wine. But we didn’t touch the beer so beer and baseball it is after coffee with the missus and a long jog.

      Cheers

    1. Let’s get some baserunners on from the bottom of the order so Ohtoni can do some damage. Ohtoni has only 3 RBIs because of 3 solo HRs.

      1. Last time Ohtani saw a pitch with a runner in scoring position, the Dodgers were in Japan.

  45. Report from Newsweek says Guererro Jr. is close to signing a 14-year-500-Million-dollar extension. Nice win last night. They are still too dependent on homers to score. Early game today, 10:35 PST.

  46. Dodger team batting average is .225 which rank 18th of the 30 teams. We’re fortunate we’re hitting homeruns to score runs.

  47. Assorted notes from teh minors, picking up on the Auger mention up thread:

Zyhir Hope destroyed a HR yesterday! 427 feet, 111 mph off the bat in inclement weather. Beyond that, he had 2 other singles that BOTH registered over 100MPH, and is hitting .571, OPS 1.571!

Good showing for late riser Brandon Neeck had an “up-down” last night for AA Tulsa. 1.1 scoreless, no hits, no runs, 2 Ks, no walks. Uncommon throwing style that starts far left and creates good approach angles. Slider and change continue to develop, from July 13th of last season on: ERA of just 0.45, a K% of 31%, just a 7% BB%, 0.63 Avg., and .127 Slug allowed.

John Rhodes came to LAD from Baltimore in the minor league version of the Rule 5 draft. He had 3 hits for AA Tulsa last night, including his 1st HR & 2nd HRs of 2025.

  48. Snell to IL, Sauer to active roster.

Snell threw a bullpen session this morning, but had a conversation with trainer Thomas Albert and GM Brandon Gomes afterward

The first bullpen game is Wednesday?

      1. Ardaya speculates Knack or Wrobo-cop to take the starting spot alongside the bullpen game.
