2022 All-Star Game & Stuff

So next year, Robber Manfred’s Traveling Circus & JuJu Medicine Show will play the All-Star Game at Chavez Ravine. Alrighty then! Will Bellinger and Muncy both compete in the HR Derby? I can hardly wait. However, I am being sarcastic. I’ll leave it right there.

The new MLB Power Rankings are out and the Giants at #1 with the Dodgers #2. The Giants com to the Ravine for four games starting Monday. That should be very interesting. Friday and Saturday, Buehler and Urias take the mound in Denver and Sunday it could be Price or JoJo. Maybe Clayton or JoJo…

  • The best Free Agent SS in baseball COULD be back this weekend!
  • Who still wants Francisco Lindor and his $341 Million boat anchor contract? He is htting .227 with a .702 OPS. He can no longer carry Corey Seager’s joc!
  • The Red Sox are for real and could be getting Chris Sale back soon as well as promoting Jarren Duran to be the starting Centerfielder allowing Alex Verdugo to play RF for which he is best suited.
  • Kike Hernandez is doing what he always does… except his defense is not as good as in the past, but he will be 30 next month.
  • I would say that Kiek and Joc may be missed as humans, but not on the field.
  • Finally, it appears that there will be some decision on the Trevor Bauer situation by July 27th. That gives AF a couple of days to get something done if the decision is adverse. I think there is a 50-50 chance he pitches again this year… for the Dodgers.

Down on the Farm

  • Diego Cartaya hit his 10th HR last night. He’s hitting .297 with a 1.000+ OPS in A-Ball as a 19-year-old.
  • Jake Vogel continuse to rake at RC, going 2-5 last night.
  • Vivas and Leonard also contine to look like they could move up a level.
  • Justin Yurchak went 6 for 9 in a double-header for GL last night as the Loons won both games. He is hitting .371 with a .916 OPS. In 167 AB’s he only has 2 HR’s. His OB% is .455!
  • Melvin Jiminez has been working his ERA down at GL – it now sits at 1.93 and he is being used exclusively out of the bullpen. He still needs to cut down on his walks, but his WHIP at 1.94 is acceptable. He is still only 21. He has been in the system since 2016, but now is showing signs of being a quality arm out of the bullpen.
  • Mike Busch was 2-3 with a double last night. He is starting to strng some hits together.
  • Miguel Vargas continues to play 3B and was 3-5 last night. Still 21, he is hitting .292.
  • Michael Grove contines to keep rolling out to the mound and not getting results. Well, he is getting results: Last night he pitched 3 innings, allowing 8 hits and 6 runs. OUCH!

  1. Does anyone else think it’s odd that the Dodgers don’t plan on having Seager go on a rehab assignment? I know that Lux isn’t hitting much, but does it make sense to bring Seager back for the Giants series, with no rehab assignment and what seems to be a worse glove than what we’re getting from Lux?

Get back Jo-jo! I love the Beatles and spin their LP’s often. I’m not sure if there’s any others on this site, but I am one of those guys that still spins and collects Vinyl Records. I have quite a few Beatles albums and my favorite right now is Beatles for Sale.

Wow, Justin Yuchak has some lofty batting averages on his BR page! I’m glad to see Vogel starting to settle in. He’s a young kid and the Dodgers were really excited to start working on his swing after drafting him. Hopefully, the work they’ve put in is starting to pay off. The dude has game changing speed and will hopefully be our Center Fielder and leadoff hitter of the future.

It’s officially trade season now. I really liked how the draft coincided with the All-Star break and now we’re jumping into trading season. Over the past few years people have speculated on what AF might do. It seems that the consensus now is that speculation is futile since AF always seems to surprise us. The deadline falls on the 30th this year because they didn’t want it to fall on a Sunday. I sure hope AF finds a great Black Friday deal in July this year. Are we still allowed to call it “Black Friday” in today’s political environment?

Yesterday’s comments section was one for the ages! I don’t think I’ve laughed as hard reading on this site as I did yesterday. Patch’s meme made me laugh so hard I think I peed my pants a little. Seeing Bumsrap felt like bumping into an old friend after a long hiatus and Jayne broke it down perfectly in the most simplest terms. Pay attention Badger, you can learn something from Jayne’s comment regarding those familiar “News Agencies”.

In case you missed it, Bill Plaschke wrote a full virtue signalling article from high a top of his soap box. I find it disturbing that people want to convict others based solely on allegations. The LA times is another subscription I cancelled long ago.

Jo-jo is starting tonight’s game at OKC. So far, he’s pitched in two games since his injury and has given up 1 hit in two short starts totalling 6IP 1H 0R and 5K. He managed 4 innings on 53 pitches last time so I’m guessing we won’t see him on Sunday. It’s probably best that he doesn’t make his pro debut against the Rockies in Colorado or for the madhouse that will be Dodger Stadium during the upcoming Giants series.

My gut tells me that CK will be back in time to avoid a full on bullpen game since Gonsolin and Price are still building up. I guess if I had my way I would set the rotation as Urias, Bueller, Price for the Colorado series and then Kershaw, Gonsolin, Urias and Buller for the Giants series. This way the two guys that are “Building Up” don’t pitch back to back.

Well, we exhausted the voting rights subject yesterday. What do you all think about our Southern Border, Immigration and School Choice?

    1. The policy is the more illegal immigrants they let in, the more future votes for the Do Nothing Democrats and Clueless Joe Biden.

      1. You might not like immigrants, illegal or otherwise, but the American economy loves, loves, loves immigrants.
Just consider the workers who toil in the fields.
Just imagine what the produce section in your local grocery might look like if there were no immigrants. My guess is we’d have about one-third the goods at three times the price.
True story: Back in the 1980s, in a spasm of enforcement, the INS (as it was then known) raided a strawberry patch in Orange County–an area that has sense become urbanized. With ripening fruit and no pickers, the grower put out a call for help. Unemployment was high and about 30 people showed up to pick fruit. Was this proof that those Mexicans were taking American jobs? Well, not really. Most of the newbies quit after a couple of hours. The next day, only two palefaces remained–a young man and his wife. But they weren’t your ordinary Americans either–a few months earlier, they had been working on a kibbutz in Israel.
Anyway, immigration is hardly a new issue. Remember when that massive amnesty bill was signed decades back that granted a path to citizenship for millions of so-called “illegals.” Sounds like something Jimmy Carter might have done. But it wasn’t him, of course. It was President Reagan.

    2. Sigh,

      No baseball in the below.

I’m quite torn on immigration, many of the arguments for ramping up immigration to massive levels read true and are interesting. But I worry about automation and its impact on society.

School choice is kinda silly to me. The issue with schools is parents and the ability of parents to be involved in schooling matters. If parents don’t care, or don’t have time to care because of infrastructure, economics or household situations. Whatever the reason. If the parents can’t care, the school really won’t matter. Figure that. Abolish School boards and restructure the way public sector unions interact with public policy are probably better ways to increase school performance.

      1. My Prussian great grandfather left Germany dodging the military draft and farmed in Iowa. On the other side I have little knowledge deeper than the name of my great grandmother and that her tribe was the first on the ‘Trail of Tears’. Also the first civilized tribe. For me I have feelings on both sides when it comes to immigration and borders. This country was born from terrorists that we later named patriots. Columbus is credited as the discoverer of places where people already existed and the catholic church chose themselves as realtors and said slavery was alright to crusade slaves to it’s faith. Power is a strange thing and is also fluid. To make this world better who should be it’s ruler?

        1. And what country empire or dynasty do you think is any better
The Native American tribes did the same thing to each other before the Europeans ever got here, they conquered and killed their enemies for territory and treasure
We are not perfect but calling us terrorists is disgusting

          1. I think the reference was to the Boston Tea Party, which was certainly regarded by the crown as “terrorists.” It was the start of a violent revolution.
Did any country do better? Well, every country has its warts, but Is it unpatriotic of me to suggest Canada did better? I don’t pretend to know its history in great depth, but I doubt that the natives were treated as harshly, and that it didn’t have the horrors of slavery the US had. Canada never had a Civil War, even if French-speaking Quebec sometimes talks of secession. Seriously, Canada does a lot of things better. Consider gun violence. Mass shootings are tragically common in the US, but not north of the border.
Anyway, I really don’t think the issue is which country is “better” or has a more noble history. I think the issue is how me make our country better and create a more noble history in the here and now.

    3. Well I share your affinity for the Beatles. I was a fan from the beginning although being from Cali, you had to like the Beach Boys too. My two favorite albums are Rubber Soul and Abbey Road. Dodgers sent Reks back to OKC today and have an open roster spot which will lead to all sorts of speculation. The Sherfy pickup went under the radar. The guy does have some decent K numbers. The weakest link in the pen right now in my estimation would be Reed. No Dodger baseball until tomorrow, Yanks-Sox tonight. I am avoiding the political stuff.

      1. Wow, sounds like Corey might have convinced them to activate him so he can do his rehab assignment in Colorado.

What, no Revolver? I love your favorite albums. Rubber Soul is amazing front to back, but doesn’t have the heavy hitter that other albums have. Expect maybe “Drive my Car”. Abby Road on the other hand has one of their greatest songs ever IMHO, in “I Want You” aka “She’s so Heavy”.

Of course I love the Beach Boys, growing up in Huntington Beach, they are the soundtrack of Summer for me. I have a greatest hits album and of course “Pet Sounds”.

        1. The American and English albums were different. I think two of their best ever ballads came off of this album, Norwegian Wood and Michelle. Nowhere Man was also on the album. Nowhere Man, Drive My Car, What Goes On and If I Needed Someone were all released in the US the next year on the Yesterday and Today album. They were replaced for US distribution with I’ve Just Seen a Face, and It’s Only Love, which was also on the Help! Album. Since all of the disc’s I now have are English releases, those songs are on Rubber Soul. I liked Revolver, but not as much. I also am a huge fan of Sgt Pepper. Pet Sounds is one of the Beach Boys best. Funny how in the US it peaked at # 10, but in Britain, it was critically acclaimed and reached #2 on the charts. The only song on the album not written by Brian Wilson was ” Sloop John B” which was added to the album to appease Capitol Records because they did not think any of the other songs could be singles. John B is an old Caribbean folk song and had previously released by the Kingston Trio.

          1. The discussion of the Beatles reminds me of something cool I saw on YouTube. Maybe VH1 or MTV put it together.
Scores of contemporary artists were asked a single question: “John or Paul?”
Of course they were all well versed on the topic, and their explanations for the reasoning were interesting. I don’t remember who it was, but one guy had a funny answer.
            “George.”

        2. Hey, Dick Dale had some pretty great surf music too. Especially if you were in the surf scene in socal back in the day. 1st band was jr high & it was pretty much all Beatles & Stones.

      2. In South Bay Beatlemania took a little longer to catch on. Folk music was also big and fans in any music thought they owned the artists. Like fans of Folk calling Dylan a traitor when electricity was added to HIS songs. Until Dylan told Lennon “you’ve got nothing to say” the Beatles songs ranged nothing more than boy-girl songs. Thank you Bob Dylan. I don’t vote. Just voting for the lesser of two evils is bullshit I want no part of.

        1. I was going to school in Manhattan Beach at Mira Costa when the Beatles arrived on the scene. And you have the analysis right on. It took me a while to appreciate their sound, and most of the stuff in the beginning sounded like exactly what you said. I was into folk originally, and was not a Dylan fan in the beginning. I just thought he was a great writer, but a terrible singer, I still do.

          1. I loved the folky Dylan much more than the electric Dylan, but Santana was my favorite band.

Simon and Garfunkel and Neil Diamond were my favorite artists. And then along came YANNI, who captured my heart for many years….until he thought he needed to add voices to his music.

As for voting…yes, it does seem like all it is today is voting for the lesser of the two evils.

          2. My favorite Dylan songs are Lay Lady Lay,. and Knocking on Heavens Door, which was later covered Jamaican style by Eric Clapton. I pretty much quit listening to rock when heavy metal came along, and switched to Country with no regrets. Strait, Jackson, Haggard, Nelson, Jennings and Alabama at the top of my list. Despise the new country simply because it is more pop than country, and rap has no place in country music.

  2. Black Friday refers to when companies ledgers go from being in the negative (red ink) to positive (black ink).

    1. I saw Hoese’s name recently in a box score at the Arizona Complex League or ACL which is a low kevel Rookie League.

  3. Sorry to hear Cody’s girlfriend got knocked up. Shacking up may be acceptable to many people today, but not me. In my day, back in the last century, marriage came before starting a family in polite society. Cody needs to man up in this situation. It may just be me, but Cody looks like he is on something.

    1. And all God’s people said, “Amen!” Preach it, brother! The Millennials especially need to hear this message from somebody….probably not getting it at home.

    2. Wow. Didn’t see this post coming.

      Are you serious?

That said, I REALLY like the polite society callout!

      1. That is just a little too disrespectful. You do not know the girl personally. And I am pretty sure that kind of crap would piss Bellinger off more than a little, I know it would me.

    3. Cody has always looked like he’s on something. There was a meme last year suggesting that he looked stoned.
“That’s just my face,” he said.

  4. ”Seager back for the Giants series, with no rehab assignment and what seems to be a worse glove than what we’re getting from Lux?”
    Totally agree!!

  5. Power Rankings don’t mean anything to me. What does the money think? Dodgers still favored.

You’re suggesting I don’t pay attention Bullpen. Thanks for the advice. I’ll consider it, like I do all things pointed out to me. I know we all choose to believe what we prefer to be true. I think that’s why we find ourselves where we do. Yes, interesting conversations yesterday. I’ll leave School Choice alone. As a former educator, I have opinions, but, this isn’t the place. You can have border and immigration too.

A ball numbers can be interesting, but they can also be misleading. What do these guys do in AA and above.? We now have selective algorithms there too. Fact is, we have one guy listed at fangraphs with a future value over 50. That’s Gray, he’s nursing and “still down the road.” Pepiot isn’t ready. I believe we need veteran help. My opinion on Bauer hasn’t changed. I wonder what the Dodgers are thinking?

    1. Just curious, why do you trust “The Money”? Vegas odds are like Camry drivers.

It’s my understanding the Sports Books come out with the initial lines and they are adjusted over time based on where the bets come in. So, basically you are leaving it to the masses to rank teams and not experts. Kinda like Camry drivers. Are Camry’s so great that everyone has to have one? Or, are they just a cheap average car that everyone buys because it gets the job done? Is McDonalds the best burger place in the World? It sure sells like it is.

Power Rankings fluctuate throughout the season like my wife’s mood fluctuates throughout the month. I only give them credence when the time is right and the Dodgers are on top.

Don’t be so quick to trust that FV either. Baseball America had Yadier Alvarez at 60, Walker Bueller at 50 and Will Smith at 45 not long ago…

      https://blogs.fangraphs.com/top-21-prospects-los-angeles-dodgers/

Go all the way to the bottom and you’ll see Dustin May at 40. Geesh! It’s a wonder they still have a job.

      1. I’m just saying I have found the odds more reliable than those power rankings and for the reasons you mentioned.

What’s your problem with Camry’s? I’ve owned two. Great, reliable automobiles.

I’m talking FV in terms of trade value as well as WAR value down the road. And you can always find exceptions if you look for them. I choose not to.

          1. People buy cars they find reliable. Example, I had two Nissan Frontier trucks. Very economical and relatively easy to afford. My foster mother preferred Acura’s and bought 3 of them. I have a Toyota Tacoma that is economical and reliable. I used to own nothing but Fords. But that changed some years ago.

  6. It should be interesting on how the Dodger pitching staff evolves. Will Gonsolin and Price prove to be adequate in the second half of the season? Will AF make a trade to bolster the starting staff? Will someone from the minors come up and out of no where become a star? We will have to wait and see.

Why no rehab for Seager? I don’t know. Does anyone have thought on why the Dodgers are handling Seager’s situation the way they are? Apparently, he has done a lot of hitting and fielding work here in LA while waiting for his hand to heal.

I’m a law and order guy so what’s going on and what has been going on for years at the border is totally unacceptable. Currently, ten of thousands are entering the country with little or no resistance. Among those entering the country are gang members, cartel members, hard core criminals that have been convicted here previously, terrorists, drugs, guns, and human trafficking. The Dems leadership say “but it’s very few of the illegals” or just ignore the issue. There probably have been over 1MM enter the country so far this year. I would consider 1% a “small amount”. Therefore, ten thousand + have now invaded our cities all over the country. Dem leadership at the national, state, and local have been so concerned and vigilant about protecting and controlling the spread of the Covid virus. Americans have lost loved ones, lost jobs, watched their children be denied an education unnecessarily, required to wear masks, restrict any large group gatherings, and closing of thousands of small businesses. And the people for the most part cooperated in order to stop the spread. Now, these illegals are let into the country unchecked with confirmed cases of Covid that go untreated. The Fed’s answer to continue to protect our citizenry? Put them on buses, boats, and planes and send their virus ridden bodies (and how knows what else) all over the country. I call the party in power the party of contradictions. They ask the country to sacrifice for the greater good. We do. And then they turn around and allow ten of thousands of infected people from all over the world access to our country. Until this recent invasion from the south most illegals arrived on visas and never left. With the capabilities of computers today you mean to tell me they don’t have a system that can’t track people arriving on a visa? Attach a tracking chip to their passport. Another deterrent might be a $50,000 fine or maybe 5 years in Federal prison for overstaying your visa. We don’t need more immigration laws. We need to enforce the ones we have. Or make new ones if that’s what the Congress wants to do. But, most politicians are gutless, power hungry, and lying people. So, nothing gets done. And the stupidity of it all is that the voters keep sending these idiots back to Washington. I just shake my head.
I know I went way overboard on this political stuff. I’ll refrain in the future.
    Carry on.

    1. US border authorities reportedly arrested or turned away 188,800 migrants from the US-Mexico border in June. That’s the highest monthly number in at least a decade, and brings the annual total of Customs and Border Protection encounters to more than 1 million. Overall, US border crossings have been on the upswing since May 2020. The US is now running more than 30,000 radio ads a month in Central America to deter migration as part of a larger mission in the area to target the root causes of such influxes.

    2. Do you think Cody’s stint in Oklahoma did him any good? I don’t….

I’m not so sure every player needs to spend 3 days, 12 ABs, in the minors to be declared ready to go.

      1. lol – Yeah, he looks like he could have used a little more baking time and private hitting lessons.

        1. Am glad you said that and not me….I don’t want to be known here as the anti-Cody poster.

As for Corey not working out kinks in OKC….I think he will do that in Denver, and do it better. I would think every hitter circles the schedule with a smiley face when they play Colorado in Colorado.

          1. I am very Pro-Cody and I think we’ll see a decent second half with some big moments and then a revenge tour next season.

    3. There is no need to persuade voters when you can much more easily replace them with people who will vote for you for the next generation. Some free handout here and there. Free school, health care, housing, transportation, little criminal accountability vs the shithole you came from?

Pretty simple equation to solve from a human nature standpoint.

Democrats are happy to make that happen in a trade for votes. Most of then don’t have to deal with any of the consequences after all. Do you think Pelosi or Newsome have illegals in their neighborhoods, their kids schools, etc. LOL

      1. Maybe not in the districts where they actually live, but have you ever seen photo’s of the district she represents? Shameful.

    4. The immigration laws are erratically enforced because, deep down, the USA and its businesses, large and small, want the cheap labor.
The vast majority of so-called “illegals” are not criminals at all, but people who work hard at jobs most Americans shun. Their labor props up “the American Dream” and they want a piece of it. Most of the immigrants I know are far, far better citizens than the self-proclaimed “patriots” who attacked the Capitol on Jan. 6–even it they aren’t, technically, citizens.
President Reagan knew this when he signed that massive amnesty bill in the ’80s that created a path to citizenship for millions of “illegals.”

  7. Yeah, the comments were pretty lively yesterday … and not necessarily in a bad way. I know politics have been verboten here for a long time, and with good reason, but if we can respect each other enough to not turn things into personal attacks on other people’s character, it can work. I appreciated Badger’s call to have respectful dialog and talk things out … but if we’re going to be seriously discussing whether Mary Hart, former host of Entertainment Tonight, is sending out secret white supremacy signals while speaking when her hand gestures make an OK sign, then I’ll politely bow out of that discussion.

That meme’s been making me laugh for months. Was glad to share the laughs.

One thing about yesterday, however, left me totally flummoxed. For literally years I’ve been told that any attempt to require any ID to vote is a clear and blatant attempt at voter suppression of black or Latino voters. This was at the heart of the whole Georgia voting law controversy. It’s why Manfred moved the AS venue. It’s why big corporate virtue signallers like Coke and Delta weighed in. It’s why Biden called it “Jim Crow on steroids,” and even more egregiously and irresponsibly, called the current attempts at state election reform the biggest threat to our nation since the Civil War. Why on Earth would he talk like this? This is so destructive to the national discourse!

Yet yesterday, almost nonchalantly, I see posters here cite Pew studies citing broad support across multiple demographics for voter ID requirements as if to show they were always in favor of voter ID.

“What?! I was always in favor of voter ID. What are you talking about?”

    No.

Bumsrap. I like you and am glad you’re back, but I’m not that dumb and my memory is not that short. The official talking points have made an about face because the Democrat Party saw the poll numbers and realized that the old talking points had very little public support among any demographic, so, just like that, we get gaslighted and the previously over-the-top histrionic opposition any ID requirements just goes down the memory hole like it never happened.

So, if voter ID requirements are now ok, what IS the controversy about, exactly? How ARE we on the verge of civil war according to Joe? Really? What a surreal reality we’re currently living in!

Forget it. Had to get that out.

Back to baseball. Saw a thing on Dodgers Nation about the possibility of going after Charlie Morton. Now it’s speculation time as the deadline approaches. To me, some guy with a mid 3 ERA is not enough to move the needle. We need someone good enough to allow Urias, if needed, to go back to the bullpen during the playoffs. As good as Urias has been, he’s still not the shut down innings eater you would need if you’re trying to match up against top tier teams in the playoffs… like Bauer would have been. I think the only option if you want that is Scherzer. Now it’s our opportunity to make wild ass guesses and be armchair GM and say what you think it will take to get him.

    1. I think we need an innings eater (or two) going forward. It’s about keeping the top of the rotation, whoever that might be, well rested in August and September. Morton would work. He’s not averaging 6 but he’s close. 3.64 in Atlanta might be 3.5 in LA. Friedman will know what to do. So will Farhan.

      1. On that I totally agree. Morton would be a cheap fix. And there are days when he is pretty darn good. Not sure Atl will be looking to trade him though. They are still within striking distance and their pitching staff has been hit hard. Another injury the other day, this time to Ian Anderson. …Every time I see that name I think of Jethro Tull.

        1. Atlanta’s odds of making the playoffs I believe is at 20%. I think they will be sellers.

Jethro Tull. Saw them in Anaheim. ‘69. A Marine buddy of mine from Downey got tickets and 2 hits of Purple Haze. What a night.

          1. I saw them at the El Paso Coliseum when I was stationed there, then went to the airport to take a buddy to catch his flight home. While we were walking through the concourse, we saw Anderson heading to his own plane, we said wow, Ian Anderson! He looked at us, made the peace sign and kept walking…totally cool memory.

          2. “Sitting on the park bench……eyeing little girls with bad intent…..”

            Aqualung….great album indeed!

        2. Morton is a veteran with good post-season experience. Works for me. But Atlanta is not giving up, not just yet… Only 4 games behind the Mets, I think, and they just got Joc to help make of the loss of Acuna. (That really hurt.)
As for the Dodgers, I really wish that Rich Hill wasn’t pitching for a contender… Love that guy.
Hey, Bartolo Colon is pitching well down in Mexico!

    2. I didnt stick around long enough to continue in the political dialog but whenever I see Joe Biden’s name as President, I’m pretty sure with the exception of his family and friends I think every vote he received was an anti-Trump vote only. If I am wrong, I would love someone to rebut this post and tell me why you love Joe Biden and why you think he is just what this country needs? And please don’t tell me he’s great because Donald Trump…..blah, blah……I get it, many people hate Trump. Please don’t make it about Trump…just tell me why Clueless Joe is that special.

      Thanks…..(eating popcorn)

      TM

      1. They voted against having a “racist President” and someone that constantly says stupid things. Biden says “Hold my beer.”

My gas and groceries were cheap, my job gave me more money, the government took less out of my paycheck. I thought life was good, but what do I know?

I don’t find it fishy at all that both candidates got the most votes ever. Nothing to look at here, move along.

    3. If you want voter ID then make it easy for anyone eligible to have one. For example, Colorado accepts 16 different forms of identification.

      1. I would think 99% of the people who want to vote can vote. Even with record turnout for both parties of approximately 150MM voters in the 2020 election I read there was still over 50MM+ registered voters who didn’t vote. So, there’s that. It’s just another screaming point of the left that is not true.

        1. So you want voter ID laws to make it harder? Are you against what Colorado has? Do you agree with National Review when they say less people should vote?

          1. The National Review didn’t say that. There was a regular columnist who wrote a rhetorical think piece questioning the wisdom of assuming that it is always better that more people vote. It wasn’t advocacy or a policy prescription.

          2. Sorry but this is asinine to read

I am not sure that anyone wants voting to be HARDER as you so straw man state.
People want it fair, without reproach to its accuracy and to be confident in the results. IDs are ONE way to get there.

Would you agree that ID rules and laws make it “harder” to do any of the other 1000s of things that ID is required for?

Would you also agree that buying a gun, that requires ID and many more hoops, should be able to be purchased with an ID so my right is not infringed? How about ammo? How about a fishing license?

The fact is that ONE party sets things up so that fraud and cheating is EASIER and its not the right.

      2. Or just have some sort of outreach to make sure people who don’t have an official ID have an official ID. I don’t even know how anyone gets through life in America without one. It seems that’s an even larger issue … if it actually ever was an issue. If someone doesn’t have a valid ID, they are marginalized in their daily life in way more ways than just voting. It was all a big red herring from the beginning.

        1. Why not have a national standard for Voter ID’s. For those that say an ID is free misses the point. How easy is it to get? Do you need to take time off from work to get one? What do you need to show in order to get one?

      3. In GA if you want a voter ID only it is FREE. Hence, the truth that was pointed out by many that when GIRLFRED changed the AS venue he went to a state that has SLIGHTLY STRICTER voting laws. Ah, the logic of illogic abounds.

        1. Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger demanded the firing of two high-profile election officials in Fulton County, Georgia, on Thursday after it was revealed a number of ballots were double-counted during the 2020 presidential election.

      4. My BMV, Bank, Utility, Police, Ticket Provider, and many others only accept three at most!

This is not Mamby Pamby land!

        1. So what you claim must be the only way? How about a National standard to vote in a National election?

    4. I think Scherzer or pass. Many available starters are or have been dealing with injuries this year. Why trade for a guy who possibly could join our already large contingent of infirmed. Nothing is a sure thing, but Scherzer seems to be the best bet. But, it takes two (at least) to make a deal. I think it starts with Ruiz and a couple of pitchers. It’s most likely a rental so how much to give up is up to AF. The team that has the “whatever it takes” attitude will get Scherzer. Prospects be damn. Go all 2016 Chicago Cubs. If not now, then when?

      1. I agree that Scherzer is the only guy who is really a one for one replacement for what Bauer was giving us. I don’t think it will cost more than Ruiz, and if so, it’s a no-go IMO. Personally, I doubt Farhan will spent prospect capital to get him. He’s managing the Giants farm system rebuilding project, and their current success has actually messed with his plans. Preller? That guy would sell his mom. I could see him being aggressive in going after him.

      2. Based on what Scherzer has said, it won’t be a rental. He wants an extension or he won’t OK the trade.

Assuming AF has no problem with Scherzer’s health, he could easily pay him over the next couple of years with Bauer’s money……………………………………..unless he has to eat Bauer’s contract.

        1. I don’t see an extension as a problem for that guy.

It will of course be interesting to see how the Bauer situation unfolds. A lot of moving parts to that saga, including how the union will look at it. The Dodgers can afford it no matter how it shakes out.

  8. The Dodgers seem to be pretty good at optimizing some of the pitchers they bring in by making a tweak here and there whether that be in pitch mix or a slight mechanical adjustment. If they see something in Morton that they feel they can fix, he might be a cheap pickup. But, we all know that the grand prize is Scherzer.

I would imagine that Ruiz is being shopped around like a Pad Squad member at a players only meeting. Maybe the Fish would let go of one of their up and coming pitchers to get a bat behind the plate. Maybe Andrew will strike again with something unexpected.

      1. I’m glad someone enjoys my intentionally distasteful puns, similes and metaphors.

  9. So, how much $$$ do you think the Yankees will be able to sign Corey Seager for?

I hate to say this, but I think Corey wears pinstripes next year. Losing him would be huge. Like I said once before, no Corey (and no Julio), no World Series Rings.

    1. Probably whatever it takes. Seager may hit 40+ HRs in the Yankee Stadium bandbox. If he can stay healthy. I think that where he ends up. The Yankees keep adding offense and ignore the elephant in the room…pitching. They have Cole and then who for starting pitching? And, Seager will not help their average defense.

  10. So, Seager leaves via free agency…most likely, who becomes the Dodger SS in 22??? Lux? Not ready for prime time in my book. Story??? Might be more than AF is willing to spend, Baez? The ultimate showboat. If I want steady, I would put Taylor there as a short term solution. He might not have Seager’s bat, but he has a pretty decent glove. Who knows which way AF will lean. And he has to deal with this season before even thinking about the future. With a new CBA having to be negotiated, and Manfred the mongrel in charge, who knows if there will even be a 22. Not giving Seager any at bats is not exactly true. He has spent the break in Az at the training complex getting at bats. Same kind of pitching he would be facing at AAA or Rancho. Betts said taking a break from it all was the best thing for him and the team. They go to Denver for the weekend. Rockies have been playing better lately.

      1. I feel the same, I also think Lux will never come close to Seager or any of those other guys offense. He might be better defensively than Corey, but he isn’t even Taylor good with a bat, at least not yet.

      2. I don’t see any way in a million years that Andrew signs Baez. He has an OBP of .284. Not gonna happen.

Don’t forget Marcus Semien. Dodgers supposedly had interest in him in the past and he’s having another nice year. It wouldn’t take nearly the commitment in $ or years that some of the others will be asking for.

          1. I agree too.

If it’s not Seager my choice would be Story (if we don’t stay with Lux). Story is the complete package now. I still believe Lux will grow into a 5 WAR Major Lesgue player but it might take a while

    1. I just love that Correa never comes up in this conversation!!

Like most fans, I could NEVER get behind that

I wouldn’t be heartbroken to see Seager walk. I just can’t him as that type of money player.

Simeon may be a good option outside the Big 3-4 as a 2-3 year gap

  11. No one here has a clue about what Friedman will do. If history is any indication, he will do something to try to move the needle based on need without giving up top prospects. So…

Number one need looks to be starting pitching. If Kershaw comes back healthy that’s 3 steady starting pitchers plus Price and Gonsolin, neither of which is a sure thing right now. No one knows if Bauer will be back. If he’s back then maybe there’s no need but I wouldn’t want to hazard a guess right now.

So what starting pitchers are available who would actually be an improvement and would be a plus in the post season who would not cost a top 5 prospect?

    1. If Cole Hamels is healthy (big if), he would be a nice addition and wouldn’t cost any prospects.
He had a good year and a half for the Cubs in 2018/19 but then was injured last year.

          1. Kershaw has been working on a change his entire career. No one can teach Kershaw a change up. BTW – Urias, Bauer and now Bueller all have good change ups. No coincidence?

          2. I could teach Kershaw a change up. It’s not that difficult. I learned it in a day when I was 12.

          1. Because the Astros and White Sox own lefties.

You should send your resume to the Dodgers and Clayton directly, since you learned a changeup in a day when you were 12. I’m sure they would be as impressed as I am and offer you a job.

          2. I had my chance to work for the Dodgers in 1966. I blew it.

Seriously, it’s not that difficult. Just back the ball up in your hand and aim for the center of the strike zone. You won’t hit it but for a brief moment it will look to the hitter like you did.

  12. Braves will not trade Morton unless they feel they are out of it, and right now they are not. He is so far their best starter. 8-3. And they have a ton of injuries to their starting rotation. So unloading Morton seems kind of a dumb thing to do, and you can bet, if they did decide to trade him, he would cost some prospects, maybe not one in the top 30, but something. Angels signed Adam Eaton. One thing Charlie does bring is very good post season numbers.

  13. OK, I have two friends who are very high up in Homeland Security and both are fearful of how many illegals are streaming in from the southern border. My wife is an immigrant so we both have a heart for people who want to come to the USA.

BTW, if it’s such a racist country, why are so many persons of color wanting to come here?

But, my wife and her family came here the right way. They immigrated legally and become citizens. If you believe that the border crisis is inherited by Biden, you are disconnected from reality. It’s not just Mexicans and immigrants from The Triangle, but it is gang members, coyotes, huge amounts of drugs, and people from the Middle East who are coming unscathed through the border.

We left Afghanistan (right or wrong), but the US left behind 1,500 to 2,000 translators and their families. These people helped the Americans and the Taliban know who they are. They will be systematically slaughtered… yet the Biden Administration does nothing from them… they want to come in the right way. Yet, the ones who come in illegally are fine?

Let those damn Afghans be slaughtered is what they are saying!

BTW, my friends tell me that a substantial number of the “families” who are fleeing oppression are not really families. DNA tests say otherwise!

Why is the government allowing and encouraging this to happen? Think about it!

      1. That worked!

But that’s the Trump Factor. I think the idea was good, but the bombast and saying Mexico would pay for it was stupid.

        So, let’s shoot the messenger?

        1. If it worked so well why are you now complaining? Someone on this site said traffic was up since May 2020. So that’s on Trumps watch. But it was working?

The problem was building a physical wall. Current technology (drones, sensors etc) are what the Democrats proposed. And didn’t I read that whatever minimal amount of new wall that was built was having structural problems.

          1. It was working on Trump’s watch. Just because someone said it doesn’t make it true.

The Biden Administration has changed the definitions of illegal aliens and other terms so that they do not match with past records (smart but corrupt).

            https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-57422618

But, forget all the rhetoric. Ask anyone who lives in one of those border cities. They are threatened and outraged, because many, if not most of the people crossing the borders are criminals, gang members, human trafficers, and /or drug mules. You are very naive to believe otherwise!

          2. Ask anyone who lives in one of those border cities.

Ok, I did. This is what he told me:

“You know, in El Paso we do not have that crisis today, and we need to make sure that we continue to, as the borders open up, that we continue to protect our community, and I think the El Paso is doing an excellent job today of making sure we welcome people to our country,” El Paso Mayor Oscar Leeser said Thursday in an interview with CNN’s Brianna Keilar.”

Also this from U.S. Representative Veronica Escobar:

The federal government under Biden is offering resources to local communities to help with the testing and quarantining (of migrants), and Gov. Abbott is rejecting those funds,” Escobar said. “That is causing a stress on local resources (but) I lay that at the feet of Greg Abbott.”

I told myself I was going to ignore the nonsense rhetoric today. Obviously I didn’t listen. I say we give the new policies some time. They may fail, then you can continue your complaining.

        2. By the way, the Trump factor: what we saw over a four-year period was that this was not a person who was on the level — on the level intellectually, on the level mentally, on the level emotionally and certainly not on the level patriotically,

          1. Biden is worse… except that the media ignores it! You have to look past the headlines.

          2. Best economy in decades, lowest black & hispanic unemployment EVER, 60%+ of a new businesses started by people of color and women. THAT is patriotism, the rest is bullshit.
Ask ANY oilfield worker which is more patriotic …..

          1. Don’t blame you. Some of the statements made on this site seem like an echo chamber from Fox News. Gets really old. There are times I think this site is less LA Dodger Talk and more Love the Ass of Donald Trump.

          2. It does lean right in here. I know there are progressive thinkers that read this site. They just don’t respond to the nonsense.

  14. I finally figured out what Bellinger’s problem is. I saw a clip of him hitting for the cycle when he was a rookie. His hair was much shorter. Get rid of the hair Cody, it is throwing your swing off balance! My grandmother came here in 1902 as an immigrant from Germany. They went through Ellis Island, and did it the way they were supposed to. She and her family settled down in Minnesota, like many other European immigrants, and that is where most of the family still resides. My only thought on immigration is do it the right way and I have no problem with it. Come in illegally, send them home period. I do agree with Mark that those who helped the US should be brought here if they want to come. Otherwise, they are toast. We did it for some from Viet Nam when we pulled out, those in Afghanistan deserve the same.

  15. I see the AS game had the 2nd lowest ratings EVER. Nice job #girlfred.
And now I have clarification if I will ever watch the NFL again ….. answer is a resounding NO.
    >>>>The NFL insider added that it will impose the “black national anthem” on all special events such as the Super Bowl, the playoffs, the draft and other such special broadcasts.
The source also said that going forward all players will be free to protest against the U.S.A. in any way they choose, as long as it is a “peaceful protest.”

    1. NBA final, game 3 Bucks and Suns 9.0 million viewers. MLB all star game 8.2 million. So baseball isn’t doing to bad.

      1. Nba was way down too dude. So you are just comparing one worst result to another and saying the least worse result is not so bad. SMH

  16. Man, I miss the old days with Bobbie17, MJ, DBM where our biggest worry was whether Bums was really Hamchuck.

    1. I didn’t know the others well, but MJ and I were friends. I miss her personal emails. Sweet, smart lady.

    2. Bobbie 17 loved to talk about how bad the Dodgers were and when they won he lost interest. That’s what he told me. We know what happened to DBM and MJ and they are missed. MJ was convinced that Hamchuck was Bums and I could never dissuade her, although I knew that was not true.

    1. Why would that make any diff? No reason to get vaxxed. That whole Delta variant trash is just that. TRASH. It is more transmissible and LESS deadly. That is how virus’s mutate. MSM nor the govt won’t tell you that because it does not fit the narrative. Virus’s that kill most of their hosts do not last long for reason obvious to me & hopefully to you. Their “sweet spot” is to become highly contagious but much less deadly, that is how they survive. It is why the common cold is so common. HIGHLY transmissible, not deadly at all. No one has even bothered to TRY to come up with a common cold vax ….. it is not needed.

      1. With all do respect, you sir are operating on one (misinformed) flipper. Hospitals are bracing for another wave as ICU’s are getting busy again with Covid patients. They are expecting a peak sometime in September.

      2. So much nonsense it’s not worth going into details. The bad thing is that if it was just you who got it I could care less. However, all you are doing is allowing for more mutations as well as possible transmission to animals. If that happens then everyone will be at much higher risk. More varients also could make existing vaccines less helpful.

You know it’s funny. Republicans like to talk about personable responsibility. Yet here you are not willing to step up. Why are willing to endanger your yourself, your loved ones and anyone you come in contact with?

        1. BTW, I had one shot and got sicker than a goat. After 7 months I evidently had too many antibodies.

My Doctor advised me not to take the second. I am fighting with the Health Department to get my Vax Card because I have to travel to Europe in November.

  17. There are progressive and conservative thinking folks here who choose to refrain from participating in “the nonsense “. Going back and forth calling each other names and trying to one up each other because we have a different political philosophy and point of view isn’t very pleasant for most, or maybe for some.
Insulting one another doesn’t represent our particular view very well, but it does reveal a lot about who we are.
So far there hasn’t been a whole lot of difference between either extreme.

  18. When I read this I know there is no argument, just name calling:

Don’t blame you. Some of the statements made on this site seem like an echo chamber from Fox News. Gets really old. There are times I think this site is less LA Dodger Talk and more Love the Ass of Donald Trump.

I can tolerate differing opinions but when the argument is lost, the tool of the loser becomes slander and I will not tolerate that!

    1. You’ve been calling us idiots, morons and blinder than Ray Charles for years. I thought slander was ok here. 😉

      1. The last time… chapter and verse?

Sometimes I will say if you believe ____________, you are a _____________.

        It’s a choice!

          1. The guy that’s pushing for vaccinations for everyone and a federal voting system doesn’t like that Mark can operate his own site with autonomy. Mushers, don’t you see the hypocrisy?

          2. You misinterpret my comment. Mark said when you say this, I say that and we should not care if it’s insulting. However when I say something we get righteous indignation. What’s good for Mark is good for everyone if you want free discussion. I believe Mark does want that. I was just pointing that out and nothing more.

    2. No the argument is not lost Mark. This is a baseball site but devolves far to much into political discussions. Why do people feel compelled to interject politics here? What’s the point? It’s old and does nothing but make this site, which has been good into, as Bono says “ make it something which isn’t very pleasant”.

      1. Unfortunely almost everything involves politics now.

The All Star game and it being moved……..politics.

No fans, vaccines required, etc. for attendancepolitics

The Bauer and the media reaction care thus far……politics. Compare to the Richard Sherman case from yesterday for proof.

The Justin Turner COVID bullshit after the WS……politics.

I could go on and on.

When the world converge and influence the game and the what makes up the game, I think that its a fair point to DISCUSS. Yell and scream (internet style) not so much.

        1. That’s the way politicians like it, so you don’t notice them ripping you off.

        2. Your points are well taken. Unfortunately this site has significantly more political discussions. Last week for no reason someone stated that everyone in contact with the Clintons dies. Why say this? Is this somehow baseball related? Someone feels Biden is dribbling idiot. Fine, but why say that on this site? We all come here for baseball. Unfortunately some people feel they have an ax to grind and use this platform to vent. It’s out of place and is getting old.

      2. Be the change you want to see. If you don’t like the tone, don’t contribute to the tone with pointless pejorative generalizations such as

“There are times I think this site is less LA Dodger Talk and more Love the Ass of Donald Trump.”

That was vapid, peurile, insulting and stupid. If this is your contribution to the dialog, the problem is not us, it’s you.

  19. Well, we all have our views and we are entitled to believe what we want to believe. Each person looks at the facts and reacts differently. I myself usually try to avoid politics for the simple reason that I am not all that educated on the issues or what each party is trying to accomplish. I no longer vote for the party, I vote for the person I feel is the better choice to run the country. I try to chose someone I feel can lead. In my mind, Hillary Clinton was the worst possible choice the Dems could have made. Outside of that, I feel the current president has no leadership capabilities what so ever. That is simply my personal assessment of the man. The same applies to baseball. I really disliked AF for a long time. His moves and trades were odd to me, and I did not agree with most of them. But over the last 5 years I have come to see that the guy knows what he is doing and I am nothing more than a fan. I am no fan of politics, and nowadays, if it does not affect me personally, I just simply ignore it. As for the vaccine, I got both my shots and they were given free simply because I live in a senior apartment. I got them because I read extensively about the vaccine I was taking and the after affects before I signed the paper authorizing the injections. All I got out of either was a sore arm for a short period of time. We still have restrictions in our building. A mask still needs to be worn in the common area’s. But I can go anywhere else in town with no restrictions. Everyone on here has their own opinion on whether or not to be vaccinated. Having been forced to take more shots than I care to think about when I was in the military, being allowed to chose was nice, In my entire life I had a bad reaction to a shot just once, at Fort Bliss in 1973 when I got a flu shot that made me so sick I was out for nearly a week. Since then I have never gotten a flu shot again. I am 7 months removed from receiving the injections, and I am totally fine. Sports and politics to me do not mix. I was in Munich when the terrorists killed the Israeli athletes back in 72. It was not the kind of thing you ever forget.

    1. Pretty much what you said is how I feel, Bear. Just thought I’d let you know ….YOU ARE NOT ALONE!

      1. Thanks TM. I never feel alone. A lot of my friends feel the same as I do. And even some of my family, but not all. I was originally a Kennedy Democrat back in the day, hated Johnson and Nixon. I thought Jimmy Carter was just too nice. Quit voting along party lines back before he was elected. I served around the same time Badger did, but did not go to war. I saw what it did to the country and a lot of my friends. After some hippy spit on me in the airport in San Francisco, I became pretty bitter about the whole thing. I also felt a lot of guilt because I lost a lot of friends over there. Like Badger, where I stand today is because of what I have experienced over the years. I am neither left nor right. I want what is best for the country. My main concerns are how vets are treated and taking care of our own citizens first before any illegal aliens or other countries. I would love to see all of our troops brought home, but that will never happen as long as we continue to try and police the world. A thankless job.

  20. Dodgers signed Bobby Wahl to a minor league deal a couple days after releasing him. Reks back to OKC. That means there will be a roster opening on Friday. With no games until tomorrow, and pretty much nothing else to discuss, the chatter has turned to politics. That will change when the games start. Lets stick to baseball and no name calling.

  21. BullPen, I resemble that remark and all I have to say is….
    Hooray for my side!
And fyi, it’s Bobo, wouldn’t be surprised about Bono.

    1. I don’t know if you or Bono is indeed a commie. It popped into my head, I laughed, so I posted. I loved the South Park episode about him. Now you understand my sense of humor. I never liked U2 much. The Band that is. Kinda Punny?

      1. You don’t know if Bono is communist? A simple google search would help you out with that.

Joshua Tree is on my favorite album list.

  22. The Braves and Cubs have swung a notable trade, as outfielder Joc Pederson is on his way to Atlanta. First base prospect Bryce Ball is the return going back to Chicago.

    1. That doesn’t sound like a seller. Maybe in two weeks they’ll change their minds.

    2. Braves we’re interested in Joc during the off-season, so I guess with Acuna Matata out, Joc is his replacement.

      1. Well, does that mean they are not going sell? According to fangraphs their chances of making the playoffs is 8.6%. Maybe they will try to win 12 in a row and when they don’t they will trade Joc to a contender.

      2. That is pretty much why. He has produced more than all of the replacement outfielders the Braves have run out there.

  23. Well, I hope Joc likes Atlanta. Pitching in the eastern division a little tougher than the central. I think he is just the first chip to fall.

  24. Just trying to understand the Corey Seager situation. It is obvious to me that he can’t stay healthy and why would the Dodgers or anybody want to give him the big $$$$ based on the fact he has only played in 43% of the regular season games since 2018. I know he had a great postseason last year but does that justify a $200 million contract that Borass!! thinks he should get. He is not a stellar defensive SS….actually more of a liability with his fielding. I would be surprised if the Dodgers give him a long term deal and would hope we address one of our needs…..more right handed POP that can hit LH pitching. Could Trevor Story be the answer??? Not sure about Trevor’s number away from Colorado but I know he would bring a significant upgrade to our defense which has really been an issue this season.

    1. No way he gets that kind of money from the Dodgers. If they feel that Lux is the guy, that is the way they will go. A lot depends on how the Bauer mess gets resolved, whether or not they decide to resign Kersh, do they keep Taylor??? What about Kenley? Too many questions to be answered and way too soon to know. I have seen Story a lot, and I think he adjusts to where ever he goes. His defense will play anywhere. But what kind of deal is he going to want? No way they go after Baez or Correia. They are also going to cost a lot. Someone mentioned Seimien. I think he is a realistic possibility. Right now you ought to see some of the outrageous and moronic idea’s for trades that are popping up on Twitter. Unbelievable. And most are ridiculous.

      1. Based on this year it’s Correa. Based on the last 3 years it’s Story. WAR don’t lie.

          1. That MLBTR report is from 3 months ago…..things may have changed a little since then with another Seager injury and Story not having a great season so far. Look what has happened to Lindor and Betts this year…..numbers aren’t there to justify those $300+ contracts. If someone is willing to pay Seager anywhere near that amount they are foolish and they will regret it!

      2. Part of being injury prone is being unlucky. Throughout every generation of players there always seems to be some that are just injury prone
I’d like to have Cory back but we can’t overpay for what he’s accomplished so far

        1. I really like Cory and feel he is our key #2 hitter and makes our lineup complete and very dangerous. Hopefully upon his return he will help us to put up a more consistent run producing lineup. Betts and Bellinger need to start hitting to their norms which would result in much better run production and take some of the stress off our depleted pitching staff

  25. What about all the other injuries? 43% games played over last 4 seasons!!! Can’t justify the big bucks for the limited playing time. BTW he was hit on the hands….fractured RH pinkie!

    1. Corey has had injuries, but I am pretty sure Boras is going to spin it in some positive manner. I do not think he will resign with LA, I think the price tag will be too high, and with so many other free agents to be dealt with, they will not foot the cost.
