Let The Draft Begin

Round 1 begins tonight at 4:00PM PT on MLB Network and ESPN.

Rounds 2 – 5 begins Thursday at 2:00PM PT on MLB Netwok and ESPN2

We will be covering the draft in detail. I will be covering Day 1, while 2D2 will be covering Day 2. I will summarize the full draft, and Harold will follow up with an in-depth profile of the Dodgers #1 pick and perhaps others.

Just for fun, 2D2 and I each made a final mock draft for the Dodgers. Neither of us have any more input from any Dodger exec than anyone else, so these are guesses upon guesses. So for what it is worth (don’t be smart alecs with that), here goes:

MY FINAL MOCK DRAFT(2D2)

My final mock draft based on nothing more than I like the sound of their names. If the Dodgers select just one player that I’ve named, well I’m going to celebrate with some Mocha Gelato. Come to think of it, I might just do that anyway.

● First Round, Pick No. 29: Jared Jones, RHP La Mirada HS, California. I’ve been thinking a college player here, but changed my mind at the last minute because I think this young man is going to be good. Alternate choices, in order of preference, would be: Bryce Jarvis, LHP, Duke University; Ed Howard, SS, Mount Carmel (Ill.) HS; Cole Henry, RHP, LSU; Bobby Miller, SP, Louisville; or Tanner Burns, RHP, Auburn.

● Second Round Pick No. 60: Isaiah Greene, OF Corona HS, California; Alternate choices, in order of preference, would be: Burl Carraway, LHP Dallas Baptist, Kyle Nicholas, RHP Ball State; Nick Garcia, RHP Chapman College, or Freddy Zamora, University of Miami

● Compensatory B Pick No. 66: Burl Carraway, LHP Dallas Baptist; Alternate choices, in order of preference, would be: Isaiah Greene, OF Corona HS, California; Markevian Hence, RHP, Watson Chapel HS, Pine Bluff, AR; Kyle Nicholas, RHP, Ball State; and Cade Horton, SS/RHP Norman (Okla.) HS.

● Third Round Pick 100: Nick Swiney, LHP North Carolina State. Alternate choices, in order of preference, would be: Coby Mayo, 3B, Marjory Stoneman Douglas HS, Coral Springs, FL; Markevian Hence, RHP, Watson Chapel HS, Pine Bluff, AR; Luke Little, LHP San Jacinto (Texas) JC; Caden Grice, LHP/1B, Riverside HS, Greer, SC; and Gavin Williams, RHP, East Carolina University.

● Fourth Round Pick 130: Jamal O’ Guinn, 3B, USC, California. Alternate choices, in order of preference, would be: Luke Little, LHP San Jacinto (Texas) JC; Steve Emanuels, RHP, University of Washington; Gavin Williams, RHP, East Carolina University; AJ Shaver, OF South Lake HS, Clemont, FL; Johnny Cuevas, RHP, College of Southern Nevada; and Hayden Cantrelle, INF University of Louisiana at Lafayette.

● Fifth Round Pick 159: Steve Emanuels, RHP, Washington University. Alternate choices, in order of preference, would be: AJ Shaver, OF South Lake HS, Clemont, FL; Johnny Cuevas, RHP, College of Southern Nevada; and Hayden Cantrelle, INF University of Louisiana at Lafayette; and Alex Toral, INF, University of Miami.

MY FINAL MOCK DRAFT (AC)

1. (Pick #29) – With Ed Howard’s shoulder concerns dropping him in the eyes of many scouts, my top remaining position choices of Justin Foscue, Nick Loftin, and Dillon Dingler figure to go before pick #29.  I like Jared Jones and he could be there, but 2D2 selected him.  I agree that LAD will go with the player that they value most at this point, and that will probably be a college RHP, from a college they are familiar with…

My Pick – Bobby Miller – 6’5” 220 pound RHP Louisville

2. (Pick #60) – My top three choices are Gage Workman 6’3” 185 pounds 3B/SS Arizona State, Wake Forest 6’ 3” 210 pound LHP, Jared Shuster, and 6’4” HS RHP Justin Lange, but I believe all three will be gone at this time, so my pick is that college RHSP…

My Pick – Christian Roa – 6’4: 220 pounds RHSP Texas A & M

2A (Pick #66) – I think the Dodgers will take a HS player here.  My favorite HS OF prospect after the top four who are certain to go in the 1st round is, Sacramento area left hand hitting, Chase Davis, who scouts love.

My Pick – Chase Davis 6’ 1” 210 pound OF HS (Elk Gro

3. (Pick #100) – I still believe the Dodgers will go relief at some point, and it pains me to make this pick, but very high ceiling RHRP Joe Boyle from ND just makes too much sense here.  He has hit 102 with a double plus curve, but questionable (kind) control.

My Pick – Joe Boyle 6’ 7” 240 pound RHRP – Notre Dame

4. (Pick #130) – I am a fan of USC 3B Jamal O’Guinn here, but 2D2 has selected him in this round, so I will be more than happy to give him bragging rights if I get my Trojan in the organization.  I also believe that Trei Cruz, 6’2” 200 pound infielder from Rice would be a solid value pick here if he was available.  But I have been up front with my love for relief pitchers, so why limit myself to one in round 3.

My Pick – Luke Little 6’ 8” 225 pounds LHP San Jacinto North JC

5. (Pick #159) – It would certainly be déjà vu if the Dodgers selected a Vanderbilt pitcher coming off TJ surgery (Walker Buehler and Jordan Sheffield) and LHP Hugh Fisher could very well be there for LAD to select.  He would not be a value pick here, but he would be intriguing.

My Pick – Jesse Franklin – 6’1” 215 pound OF Michigan

On the last thread, Singing The Blue provided a spreadsheet of multiple mock drafts. I have my own already set up so I am good to go. But fore everyone else see below:

This article has 19 Comments

  1. I think this is one I may watch. MLBPA made a counter proposal to the owners, calling for an 89 game season. Hopefully they are getting closer to an agreement.

  2. I think you missed a very promising college prospect: Pick #55. Mocha Gelato, 19 year old LHP, Firenze State U. His highly caffinated fastball has hit 100, but has control issues when he imbibes too many.

  3. Jason Stark’s column in The Athletic about baseball’s existential crisis:
“I wrote a column a week and a half ago that flowed from a similar place in my soul. That headline read: “Memo to baseball — don’t drive off this cliff!” I heard from so many people in the sport after I wrote that column that I lost count. But one of them was a man named Jim Kaat, who has been playing or working in baseball for more than 60 years.

Here were his words of wisdom. I’ve repeated them about a thousand times since:

“Sometimes – actually most times – BEING RIGHT is not as important as DOING WHAT’S RIGHT.”

    I couldn’t agree more.

Both sides need to just do what’s right for baseball and not for themselves and figure it out.

    1. And yet I saw this from another site;
      MLB proposals so far:

      – 82 games at sliding scale = ~33% salary

      – 50 games at prorated pay = ~33% salary

      – 76 games at 75% prorated pay = (drumroll) ~33% salary

It all comes back to the same place.

    1. I’m all over that one Bum.

Best player available be one of those 20 or so players mentioned above.

70-80 games, 46.296292% of salary. Arrive at something even if it’s just for show, then use the virus as the excuse not to play.

      1. I like how a plan comes together. I would go as high as 75.758361332% though and 81 games.

          1. Great ideas all. I’m also down with taking the highest upside guy with an injury. It’s worked before

  4. If you haven’t seen “The Sounds of Baseball – Vin Scully” on the MLB channel, you need to.

  5. Dodgers select Bobby Miller, just as AC predicted.

Which begs the question, has anyone ever seen AC and Andrew Friedman in a room together?

    1. Saw video of Miller’s slider on the broadcast. It’s a good one. Also has a fastball in the upper 90’s and according to someone on MLB, he has attitude. I like the choice. Good work AC!
Maybe we just drafted ourselves another Buehler.
