Austin Barnes and Russell Martin have taken the majority of the innings behind the plate this year. After about 25% of the season is complete, Martin is hitting .259 with a .400 OB% in just 39 AB’s while Barnes is hitting .206 with a .316 OB%. Barnes started the season hitting well but cooled off quickly and has not shown much since his initial start. Martin has fared better in the “eye test” as he has been working with the new hitting team to change his swing path. It appears to be having some effect.
The question is: Will he hold up physically? I can say YES and you can say NO but the truth is: WE DON’T KNOW! It would appear that 80 games might be optimistic. Neither Barnes or Martin is a long-term solution at catcher… maybe not a season-long solution. The popular notion is that Will Smith will be called up soon… and he could be. By all accounts, he is ready defensively to catch and throw at a Major League Level. The only question is: “Can he hit at the MLB Level?” That’s the big question.
Smith is hitting .252 with a .381 OB% at OKC. Not bad, but not tearing up the league either. To me, Will Smith projects as a solid back-up catcher who has great athleticism and is outstanding defensively. I think he will struggle to hit .200. That’s my opinion, but I could be wrong. If I were Andrew Friedman, I would call him up, like soon… and see how he does. If he struggles to hit, the Dodgers may have to look for another option outside the organization.
A while back someone said that Austin Barnes is too small to be an everyday catcher. Well, Will Smith is about the same size. Both are listed at 5′ 10″ with Smith being 8 pounds heavier than Barnes at 195. Will Smith will not likely be a workhorse if he makes it. I think that if I were totally wrong about his hit tool and he could be a good hitter, he will end up at 3B where he could be outstanding as well. I just don’t buy into the “hit hype” surrounding him.
Keibert (Kay Bear) Ruiz is the Dodger’s catcher of the future. Some of you will say, ” But he’s only hitting .229 at AA Tulsa.” That would be true, but just like the Dodgers re-worked Will Smith’s swing last year for more power, Ruiz is going through the same metamorphosis at Tulsa this year. Like Alex Verdugo, Kaybear has amazing bat-to-ball skills and even though he is still struggling, he has only logged 6 strikeouts in 105 AB’s. That a 5.7% strikeout rate.
Will Smith is 24 years old while Ruiz is 20… playing as one of the youngest players in the league. He won’t be ready THIS year, but if his new swing takes effect, he could be in the running next season. The Dodgers have shown a preference for moving youngsters along slowly so they may have him slotted for 2021, His bat could change all that. I think he is the #1 catching prospect in baseball and so does BA. Giants fans may argue that Joey Bart is better – we shall see. Ruiz is a switch-hitting Alex Verdugo. As we wait for him, let’s see what Will Smith can do. It’s time for the Fresh Prince – Will Smith!

The Dodger affiliates split their four games last night.
OKC Dodgers 2 – Round Rock Express 5 (Astros)
Brock Stewart started for the Dodgers and completed 5.0 innings. He allowed 2 runs and 4 hits, including a triple and HR. He had 3 walks to go with his 6 strikeouts. In his continuing rehab assignment, Caleb Ferguson pitched the 6th, allowing a double and a walk with his one strikeout, but did not allow a run. Kevin Quackenbush and Stetson Allie combined to allow 3 runs on 4 extra base hits, including 2 HRs.
Offensively, outside of Kyle Garlick’s team leading 10th HR and Will Smith’s 5th HR, the offense was rather anemic going very quietly with 17 of the last 18 batters being retired.
The Dodgers have dropped to 11-25 and have yet to beat the 1st place Express in 6 games. The Dodgers are now 12.5 games behind the Express in the PCL American Southern Division.
Tulsa Drillers 4 – Northwest Arkansas Naturals 8 (Royals)
The experiment of 36-year-old pitcher JD Martin hit another obstacle of ineffectiveness. After taking a 3-0 lead in the top half of the 3rd, Martin surrendered 7 runs to the Naturals in their half of the 3rd. Overall, Martin had 5.0 IP allowing 7 runs on 7 hits, 3 walks, and 2 strikeouts. Chris Nunn followed Martin with 2.0 IP. He did allow walk, stolen base, and single for one additional run, Layne Somsen finished with 1.0 IP and registered 2 strikeouts and no baserunners.
The Drillers used 4 singles, an error, and a sac fly to score their 3 runs. Jared Walker and Steve Berman each had 2 this, while Gavin Lux had 2 RBI’s.
The Drillers remain 2.5 games behind the Arkansas Travelers (Mariners) in the Texas League North Division.
RC Quakes 7 – Lancaster JetHawks 3 (Rockies)
20-year-old RHSP Gerardo Carrillo had another quality start going 6.0 innings allowing 3 runs on 6 hits, including a 6th inning solo HR. He did have 6 strikeouts to go with 1 base on balls. Wes Helsabeck did register his 2nd save in his 3.0 innings of shutout relief. He did surrender 2 hits but had no walks. He did strike out 5 JetHawk batters.
The Quakes scored in 5 of their 9 innings. Jeter Downs continued his resurgent offense with a 2-5 night, while Nick Yarnall also had 2 hits and 3 RBI’s including his 2nd triple and 3rd HR. Starling Heredia had 2 RBIs. Brandon Montgomery hit his 4th double and Drew Avans hit his 2nd triple.
The Quakes now have a 2-game lead over the JetHawks in the California League South Division. The two teams match up over the next three nights at the Hangar in Lancaster.
Great Lakes 3 – Dayton Dragons 2 (Reds)
After a three-game lull due to field conditions, the Loons returned to the diamond and continued where they left off with another win. They have now won 12 out of their last 13 games.
Andre Jackson started and threw 4.2 innings of shutout baseball, offering up 2 hits and 2 walks and generating 10 strikeouts. 20-year-old Jose Martinez finished the game with 4.1 innings. He did allow the 2 runs (1 earned), on 5 hits 1 walk and 3 strikeouts.
The Loons scored 2 in the 4th with doubles by Miguel Vargas (8th), and Jacob Amaya (10th). Later in the inning, Amaya scored on a Dan Robinson 2-out RBI single. After the Dragons tied the score in the 5th, the Loons strung together 3 singles to score the eventual game winning run in the 7th. Vargas went 3-4, Amaya went 2-4, and Robinson went 2-3 on the night, with each of the three getting an RBI.
The Loons continue to hold a 1.0 game lead in the Midwest League Eastern Division over three teams.
I dont think it’s fair to compare Alex’s hitting abilities to k bear, I think contact rate is similar but 2 totally different hitters. With Alex by far the superior one

Smith is similar to Barnes physically but with more power, and a better arm. Ruiz is a switch hitter but is better from the left side and there has been discussion of dropping the RH side. They are developing nicely and the team does not want to rush either one as long as Martin stays healthy. The team has so much offense it can afford to have one defense first position this year. I never understood adding d’Arnaud but it shows they are exploring ‘cheap’ options and even the brain trust quickly concluded that was a mistake. They have Gale and Thole around for vet options as well. Barnes is cheap and Martin has a CBT of zero this year, the brain trust decided to save money at catcher after having the offensive luxury of Grandal for so long while the young catchers develop.
It has just been reported that Julio Urias was arrested last night for domestic violence. He apparently pushed a woman to the ground in a parking lot. The woman denies the altercation, but there is apparent video to support the witnesses claims. Julio is out on bond. We are going to need to wait and see how this turns out, but it sure doesn’t sound too good.
That’s not good on so many different fronts!

It does not matter the innings problem. You have criticized Puig for clubhouse morale etc and that is why they trade him. But this is terrible.
Puig is gone, let it go. Same with Kemp. Both of them had multiple issues in the clubhouse and clashing with managers. I have not heard anything of that kind with Urias, so he will be treated differently.
Urias is a Phenom Left Handed Starting Pitcher. He isn’t going anywhere. He’ll serve the suspension and then he’ll be back on the team. He was arrested for domestic battery which is the least serious of all domestic violence charges because there doesn’t have to be an injury associated with it. His “girlfriend” “denied anything physical took place … and insisted it was nothing more than a heated verbal argument.” Same a-hole with an iPhone caught enough on video whereas the police had to do something.
There will be a suspension, he will get “treatment” and he’ll be pitching again for the Dodgers in 30-60 days. Don’t read into the fact the we backed out of the Ardolis Chapman trade due to taking a hard-line stance. They may have backed out of that trade because of the uncertainty of the pending investigation and looming suspension.

I would think so.
Giants exec Larry Baer was suspended for over 3 months for basically causing his wife to fall while grabbing for her phone. If there was enough of an altercation for Urias to be arrested last night I would suspect we may not see Julio back until September at the earliest.
Roberto Osuna was suspended for 75 games for assaulting the mother of his child. The video showed that she was severely assaulted. I cannot find them now, but I am sure that some of you who are adept of scouring the internet can find the videos. They are horrid.
Aroldis Chapman who allegedly put his hands around his girlfriend’s neck, and discharged a fire arm 8 times in his garage got a 30 day suspension.
Jose Reyes got a 52 game suspension and he was accused of grabbing his wife by the throat and shoving her into a sliding glass door, and she received treatment at a hospital.
One thing in common for all three of the suspensions above, plus the Larry Baer suspension, no criminal charges were ever filed as none of the women wanted to press charges. Did not stop MLB from being convinced that something happened.
I have not seen the Urias video, albeit with TMZ I am sure they will be out. But it does not sound as if it remotely approaches the Reyes or Osuna altercations. He allegedly pushed a woman to the ground, and if true, not acceptable in a civil society, and he should be disciplined. If the allegations are true, and WE DO NOT KNOW, the altercation sounds closer to the Chapman level than any of the others. Baer was embarrassed and got a 3 month unpaid vacation. That seems fair as well.
I think the Dodgers should put Urias on what is considered “Administrative Leave” while the investigation is ongoing. Whatever suspension is rendered will include his time under Administrative Leave. At least that is how it worked in the other scenarios.
Not having seen the video, but just going by the description, the Urias incident seems far less egregious than Osuna, Chapman or Reyes. Maybe MLB just holds executives to a higher standard than players since Baer’s incident was also far less. If, in fact, they do hold execs to a higher standard, that would be very understandable since no one pays to see Baer. Nice to see that the almighty dollar rules once again.
I’m trying not to weigh in on this but seems a little bit different with a player vs. a front office figure. Can’t explain why exactly but that’s what I feel.
We do not know all the facts yet. It could be an accidental shove if she attacked him first like pushing her away if she was trying to hit him. If it was done in anger it does not bode well. Best to wait for more news before judging it.
Agreed, we don’t know the circumstances and will never know the entire story. But, professional athletes need to know they are under the microscope and handle themselves accordingly.
This is a real bummer for Julio. It’s a bad look and it will be some time before people forget about this. I really feel bad for the kid. He seems pretty smart and I think he’ll learn from this. I’m not going to speculate further.
As far as the Dodgers go, the timing really couldn’t be better with 2 lefties poised to come off the DL and Stripling being the natural long man and a full healthy rotation. Timing could be a lot worse and there’s plenty of time for him to put this behind him before the end of the season. I don’t expect Torre is fully objective when it comes to the Dodgers, but I wouldn’t expect this to be more than a 45 days suspension based on others.

1. I do not think Urias had a pistol and fired 7 or 8 rounds through the wall.
2. We have no evidence of anything other than he was arrested.
3. I think he should go on Administrative Leave while it is investigated and adjudicated, if necessary.
4. Maybe he is guilty, but this does not rise to the level that Chapman’s did, at first blush.
5. It is serious and should be thoroughly investigated and Urias should sit while that happens.
6. Don’t jump to conclusions… remember the Duke LaCrosse Allegation?
Whatever happens, this sure casts a pall on the season. I’m one of those people who follow sports as a way to get away from “real life” stuff, so it’s a shame when we’re reminded that it’s all a mirage and real life stuff follows us everywhere we go.
On a totally baseball related item, Houston Mitchell’s latest column is out. Here are a few nuggets:
“For relievers, a good stat to look at is IRS%, which is short for inherited runners who score percentage. It’s also shortened as IS% on some websites. This tells us how effective the reliever was when he came in with runners on base. Come in with the bases loaded and hold them scoreless, then your IRS% is 0%. Allow all three to score, and it is 100%. Two of three? 66.7%. You get the idea. The lower number the better.
The league average in IRS% this season is 30%. Let’s see how the Dodgers relievers compare to that.

So Floro isn’t nearly as good as some think. And El Gasolino is the only guy who puts out fires! Who’d have thunk it?

There you went and made them mad! The pen is evolving and will look much different by seasons end… I believe!
Pretty much what I suspected especially in the inherited runs department. Couple that with a manager that loves to make mid inning pitching changes and it only exasperates the problem. A point which MT argues blindly in favor of Doc when I mentioned that Alexander seems to blow it more often than not when he comes in during the middle of an inning. Seems like the stats back me up, Mark.
I argue that when players execute, they make the manager look like a genius. When they don’t we think the manager should be executed. It’s not the manager – it’s the players. I was listening to a round table discussion of former MLB Players and they agreed that the worst to the best manager makes a difference of only 5 or 6 wins a year and they ranked Roberts in the top tier. The way I hear it, Roberts has blown every game this year. That defies reason.
You’re batting 1.000 defending Roberts. Is that an outlier or are you being paid?
Let’s see here. Dodgers are horrible at inherited runners stranded, wouldn’t make sense to try to limit that damage by managing around it?

What Mark says. Not that I am disappointed in Dino Ebel, but I was hoping that Haselman would have been named 3B coach. Haselman was my son’s away roomie while on the 2003 Pawtucket team. They were co-catchers that year. My son outhit Haselman, but Haselman was by far the better catcher.
Unless it doesn’t happen, I believe that Friedman is just using Haselman for everything they can get this year (and he offers a lot). I believe he will be the Giants manager next year! Zaidi did not want him breathing down Bochy’s neck in the Giants organization.
Vegas mentioned d’Arnaud and that the Dodgers might have concluded it was a mistake to pick him up. I don;t think that was it at all. I think they wanted to see what they could do with him, but the opportunities would be few. When TB called needing a catcher, they gave him a great opportunity. If you know anything about Friedman is that he takes care of employees and players. This was the best for d’Arnaud, who would not have had many opportunities with the Dodgers anyway.

I too was hoping he would be the Dodger’s 3rd base coach. Thought he was a very successful and talented manager. By the way, did your son have any desire to manage or coach?
He had multiple opportunities. He could have stayed in the Red Sox organization. He could have gone to Cleveland with Francona. And there were others. He wanted to be a full time Dad to his daughter. Although it would have been interesting had Gabe Kapler got the Dodger manager job.
Last year at the end of the season Kike raised his level with the bat, especially against the rights, and it was basically because he used the ABC to hit, this is to use the whole field. Kike started very well this year, practically took it where he left off, but from a time here he has fallen into his old vices, everything wants to pull and that makes him vulnerable to pitches outside the rights, mainly the slider and the curves . Is there no one on the team to tell him what’s going on, who do not watch videos every day ?, I hope he can correct, he can be the best in 2B, very good defense and can be a good hitter, I hope that solve it

I am assuming that Cingrani is not ready quite yet. He still has another potential 10 days of rehab, and they probably want to see what he can do in back to back games. Ferguson has another 2 weeks + for his rehab. Actually Shaggy has been the best of a mediocre to poor OKC bullpen. 11 games, 15.1 IP, 1.76 ERA, 1.17 WHIP, 5 BB, 19 K. His ball has a ton of movement. If he can command it, he could stick.
Reports are that Ferguson will be activated this weekend for the Cincinnati series

If he serves a 30 game suspension, there will be 89 games remaining when he comes back lining him up for around 17 starts. At 7 innings per start, it would put him at 152 innings on the season. A 60 game suspension would yield around 11 starts and around 110 innings on the season.
Alright, we lost a bullpen weapon in a bullpen that’s very bad. The bright side is they can treat him as a starter going forward which is probably better for his long term health. Trying to look at the bright side, this could be a blessing in disguise.
I check back in and what do I find. Julio killed somebody or did he? Check out Bill Burr. He will tell what it is like arguing with a woman and how to properly do it. Julio apparently went overboard. Maybe she tried to steal his parking spot.
Oh, and I am proud to have been a Verdugo supporter from day 1.

Joc would hit 45 and Belly would be MVP with his projections and Verdugo possibly ROY if they hold up.
